Said Returns to Go FAS Racing for Sonoma; 7-Eleven and AmeriGas to Sponsor
Go FAS Racing announced on Wednesday that 51-year old Boris Said, currently a full-time racer in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship's Prototype class for Marsh Racing, will drive the team's No. 32 Ford in this weekend's Toyota/Save Mart 350k. Sponsorship will be provided by a combination of 7-Eleven and AmeriGas.
For Said, he's happy to be back in a Sprint Cup car and back with 7-Eleven.
"I'm thrilled to be back in a car sponsored by 7-Eleven," Said proclaimed in a press release. "We were partners at the 2008 Sonoma race with 7-Eleven and Slurpee on the car and I am pleased to be able to continue that partnership again this year with 7-Eleven and AmeriGas. I'm looking forward to having a great weekend back on the track. I've always enjoyed Sonoma and have had some solid top-10 finishes there. I'm looking forward to adding to that number on Sunday."
When combined with former versions of what is now Go FAS Racing, Said has driven for the team at Sonoma on three separate occasions. Said finished eighth for the operation when it was Latitude 43 Motorsports in 2010. The last two years, the team has run sponsorship from HendrickCars.com and earned finishes of 29th and 18th. The HendrickCars.com sponsorship was mainly due to Said's ownership of BMW of Murrieta, a Hendrick Automotive Group-affiliated car dealership.
It will be at least the fourth time that Said has attempted a Cup race in 7-Eleven's white, orange and green colors. The only previous start in those colors was at Sonoma back in 2008 when Said started 14th and failed to finish due to shock failure. Said also attempted the Daytona 500 and Watkins Glen in those colors, but failed to qualify for them (Watkins Glen was due to qualifying being rained out). Said also ran the colors in the Zippo 200 Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen in 2008.
Toyota Re-ups Sponsor with Sonoma Raceway
On Wednesday, Sonoma Raceway announced that Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A. and the Northern California Toyota Dealers have signed a multi-year contract extension that will see Toyota continue their co-sponsorship of the Sprint Cup Series' Toyota/Save Mart 350k at Sonoma Raceway through at least 2017.
Track General Manager Steve Page is very happy to have Toyota continue their relationship.
"We could not be more proud of our association with the Toyota brand, their terrific lineup of cars and trucks and the outstanding group of dealers in our region," Page said. "We are grateful for their support of the raceway and the NASCAR event and look forward to working together for many years to come."
In addition to the race co-sponsorship, the deal provides for "extensive signage, promotional assets and other assets during major event weekends in Sonoma." Toyota will remain the facility's official car manufacturer and also continue as the primary sponsor for a preview special for the Toyota/Save Mart 350k that airs on Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

by Phil Allaway
Hello, race fans. Welcome back to another edition of the Critic's Annex, where I take an additional look at motorsports and motorsports-related programming. In addition to the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series, the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards made their annual trip to Michigan International Speedway for a 200 mile race. Unfortunately, the low car counts of ARCA reared their ugly head again. Only 26 cars took the green flag (apparently, there was a 27th on site, but it did not take the start). How did FOX Sports 1 cover the race? Let's take a look.
With Rick Allen in Illinois to cover the Camping World Truck Series race at Gateway Motorsports Park, Ralph Sheheen was back in the booth once again this week. Sheheen is normally a pretty good play-by-play man. Anyone who watches FOX Sports 1's coverage of AMA Monster Energy Supercross can attest to that. However, he's not quite as good here. My guess is a general lack of familiarity with the series and the teams, something that would definitely not be a problem with his Supercross coverage (it's literally a weekly grind there). Phil Parsons, who made the trip over from Gateway to provide the color commentary, is much more used to covering the series.
With 26 starters and only 21 of them making it to lap 20, the race was always going to seem a little empty at times. With a starting field of near equal size this Saturday night at Elko Speedway (live on CBS Sports Network), that won't necessarily be a problem. However, Elko Speedway is a three-eighths of a mile oval while Michigan International Speedway is two miles of near flat-out action.
Unlike Pocono, where there was a big interloper (Kyle Larson) in the field, Michigan was essentially all regulars. As a result, it could have been a big opportunity to promote some of the series' stars. Aside from Frank Kimmel (who is a mainstay in the series and stars in commercials for Ansell gloves that air during the events), all of those stars are in their 20's (or, at the short tracks, younger than that). That opportunity was not really taken. Pre-race coverage was minimal with no driver interviews. It served as a pure preview of the race, along with a replay of the incident that forced John Wes Townley to start the race from the rear of the field. I suppose with the way the event was covered, Mason Mitchell got a lot of exposure early on. However, that was because Mitchell dominated the first half of the race. Then, Austin Theriault took over.
Outside of a couple of drivers, I'd argue that most of the competitors out there are near complete unknowns to viewers, regardless of how well they're running. It's a shame. At Frontstretch, we can help to a certain degree if we're at ARCA races because we can sit down with the drivers and talk to them. Maybe have a nice couple of Beyond the Cockpit pieces or introduction features. Unfortunately, there's only so much of that that we can do. TV is the best way to introduce the top drivers in the series. Other than Kimmel, they're likely to be the future stars of the sport.
When this level of butt kicking occurs, FOX Sports 1 (or whoever is showing the event) needs to go and find battles on-track. I felt that they didn't really do that Friday evening. We saw a lot of Mitchell and Theriault, despite the fact that they were not being challenged at all. Townley got some coverage as well due to his barnstorming from the rear. I guess that the field just got way too spread out to really cover much in the way of fighting for position. By the end of the race, there were only seven cars on the lead lap. As a result of the second yellow, no one was one lap down at the finish. Grant Enfinger was the first driver off the lead lap in eighth, two laps down.
As in Pocono, pit stops played a big role due to the fact of how horrific they were. It's like every team has regressed in the pits. Then again, green flag pit stops essentially don't exist outside of the major races on television. In the rest of the events, stops almost always occur under caution. Michigan saw more issues. A number of top drivers ran out of fuel, most notably Enfinger and Justin Boston, who lost a number of laps in the pits, then later blew an engine. It's like no one had the can of ether to spray in the cowl. That confused me. Parsons made note that no one seemed to have the cans available, but didn't criticize them for it. That puzzled me. Maybe ARCA doesn't allow it, which means, "Don't run out of gas under any circumstances." Regardless, it was a little unclear to me.
There was really only one battle for the lead all day, and that was between Theriault and Mitchell on the final restart. The booth believed that the contact between the two on the backstretch, which just slightly bent Mitchell's fender, allowed Theriault to run unchallenged to the finish. Theriault claimed otherwise after the race, stating that he was saving something.
Since the race ended ahead of schedule, there was a decent amount of post-race coverage. FOX Sports 1 provided six driver interviews, plus an interview with Justin Allison's grandfather/driving mentor, Donnie Allison. There were also checks of the unofficial results and point standings before FOX Sports 1 left the air.
That's all for this week. Next week, the ARCA Racing Series makes their debut on the CBS Sports Network at Elko Speedway for the Akona 250. My best guess is that since Rick Benjamin and his production company are involved with the broadcast, I think that the telecast could look similar to what the ARCA races on NBC Sports Network last season were like. The only difference is that the CBS Sports Network races are being aired live. We'll have to see. I'm looking forward to it. In addition to Elko, enjoy this weekend's action at Sonoma and Road America.

Q: During ESPN's telecast of the 1999 Save Mart/Kragen 350k at then-Sears Point Raceway, Ned Jarrett referenced the X Games when referencing an incident. What was he talking about and why reference the X Games?
A: Ned was reacting to Steve Park's crash on Lap 25 when he spun in Turn 1a, hit the side of the hill and did a flip in the air before landing on top of a concrete wall. The crash can be seen here. The somewhat strange, shoehorned X Games reference from the then-66 year old Jarrett was due to the fact that ESPN was holding X Games 5 at Piers 30 and 32 in San Francisco that weekend. Numerous ads during the race promoted the competition down there. Jarrett is quite knowledgeable about motorsports, but not so much about action sports.Frontstretch Trivia Guarantee: If we mess up, you get the shirt off our backs!
