What to Watch: Thursday

- Today, the Nationwide Series gets settled in at Talladega Superspeedway ahead of Saturday's Aaron's 312.  Once again, both of the series' practice sessions will be held today.  The first will be from 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM, while Happy Hour will be from 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM (Times are in Central Daylight Time, add one hour for Eastern).  There will be no TV coverage of these practices.

- Also, today is the 20th anniversary of the crash that took the life of three-time World Champion Ayrton Senna at the Tamburello curve of the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy.  The crash marked off a terrible weekend in which two drivers were killed in separate incidents (Roland Ratzenberger was killed in a crash where the Villeneuve complex is today during qualifying after a reported front wing failure). Debris from a start crash then went into the crowd and injured spectators, while a loose wheel injured four crew members in the pit lane.  Essentially, everything about Formula One changed after Imola.

Montoya Back In NASCAR... For Two Races

In a press conference Wednesday morning at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Penske Racing's Tim Cindric and driver Juan Pablo Montoya announced that the former full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wheelman, now IndyCar Series regular, will return for two races in 2014.

Montoya will attempt to qualify in Penske Racing Fords at Michigan International Speedway, in the Quicken Loans 400 on June 15 and at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, in the Brickyard 400 on July 27. It's an opportunity for the Colombian to still dip his toe in stock car racing while pursuing a return back to the top of the open-wheel ladder.

"It has been a good start to the season with Team Penske in the Verizon IndyCar Series and it will be fun to get back behind the wheel of the Cup car," Montoya said in a statement. "It's hard to believe, but Roger Penske has never won the Brickyard 400. I think that Brad (Keselowski), Joey (Logano) and I will give Roger and Team Penske a great opportunity to check that off the list, and we should be strong at Michigan as well."

SKF will be the primary sponsor for Montoya's No. 12 at MIS, while sponsorship for IMS will be announced at a later date. Greg Erwin will fulfill crew chief duties in both races for Montoya.

"Juan is a proven winner in multiple racing disciplines and he is one of the most versatile racecar drivers competing today," Roger Penske said in a statement. "Michigan and Indianapolis are two important races for Team Penske. We know Juan has the ability to race for wins in both of those events while still focusing on his full-time program in the Verizon IndyCar Series."

Montoya is also rumored to potentially compete at the road courses of Sonoma and Watkins Glen. There are no potential conflicts on the IndyCar side for either of those weekends. Meanwhile, Penske's No. 12 car is also expected to be driven by Ryan Blaney at a handful of races later this season as well. Blaney will make his Cup debut when driving the car.

Talladega Superspeedway Names Backstretch After "Alabama Gang"

On Wednesday, Talladega Superspeedway held a special ceremony on their 4,000 foot backstretch in order to dedicate it to their state's favorite racing sons.  The backstretch will now be known as "The Alabama Gang Superstretch."

Bobby and Donnie Allison, along with longtime family friend Red Farmer were present at the ceremony, along with a number of classic race cars that all three men drove during their careers.  The trio will serve in a number of various roles this weekend.  The brothers Allison will give the command to start engines prior to Saturday morning's ARCA race while Farmer will throw the green flag.

Donnie Allison in particular was honored by Talladega Superspeedway's move, given how much the track means to him and his family.

"When you won Talladega, there was something extra special about it," Donnie said.  "It was a huge deal to us, our family and friends."

Track Chairman Grant Lynch is very happy to celebrate the legacy of the Alabama Gang.

"No honor is too big for The Alabama Gang," Lynch said.  "What we are doing in naming The Alabama Gang Superstretch is unprecedented in our sport. During our events, from TV cameras and still photography, fans will be able to see this accolade for some of our favorite people in the world. The gang has meant so much to NASCAR, Talladega Superspeedway and the state of Alabama, and this is just a small token of our appreciation."

Today, there are still Alabama-bred drivers making their marks on the sport.  Donnie's own grandson, Justin Allison, will be driving for Howard Bixman in Saturday's ARCA race.  Robbie Allison, the son of the late Davey Allison, is an up-and-coming late model racer.  Then there's Grant Enfinger, who has won the first three ARCA races of the season in the No. 90 Motor Honey Ford (a team car to Allison's) and is going for four in a row Saturday.

Formula One to Azerbaijan?

Inside The Games, a website dedicated to worldwide athletic competitions, is reporting that the city of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, has signed a deal to bring a Formula One Grand Prix to the streets of the Azeri capital starting in 2016.  Since Azerbaijan does not have a world class permanent circuit built to FIA Level 1 standards, the race will take place on a street circuit in Baku.

The deal is said to have already been signed and sealed with F1 head Bernie Ecclestone.  However, Baku officials are waiting until another sizable event in Baku to announce the deal.  Since Baku is hosting the European Games next year, the race will likely be known as the Grand Prix of Europe.

If the deal does come to fruition, it will be at least the fourth street course on the calendar by that point.  Sochi, which makes its debut later this year, is partially a street course.  There is still the ongoing attempt to bring Formula One to New Jersey that was supposed to be ready for 2013, then 2014, but now has been pushed back to at least 2015.  The article states that Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is also trying to get a Grand Prix with a street race.

Baku actually does have experience with street races.  They were the only city to sign up for the City Challenge, which was supposed to be a series of street races for GT3-spec cars.  Now known as the Baku World Challenge, it is the final round of the Blancpain Sprint Series in November.

Frontstretch Line of the Week

From Harry Scott, Jr. Owner Diary: Young Standouts, Night Racing Unknowns and Cording Tires

"
The thing that's really impressed me about him this year is his consistency more than anything. He's focused on all of the right things on and off the racetrack, and I think everything that he does, from school to racing to what he does for NASCAR and what he does for the community and how he approaches racing, is very professional and well beyond his years. He's very mature and a very well-spoken young man, and that's apart from his talent. He's the whole package really, which is what they look for in the NASCAR Next program when they're looking for these kids. NASCAR found him before we did, but he's a fantastic young man." - HScott Motorsports owner and Turner Scott Motorsports co-owner Harry Scott, Jr., on young gun Ben Rhodes

TODAY ON THE FRONTSTRETCH:

as told to Mike Neff
as told to Beth Lunkenheimer

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:  Following the 2001 Subway 300 at Talladega, Jimmy Spencer was none too pleased with how he was raced.  What did he say during an infamous post-race interview?

Check back Friday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Wednesday's Answer:

Q:  For Dick Trickle fans, the 1990 Winston 500 might be best remembered as the race where he got caught smoking a cigarette by the in-car camera.  However, it was a decent run for Trickle until the day was ruined.  What happened?

A:  Bill Elliott got loose exiting Turn 2 underneath Rob Moroso and spun his Coors Ford out.  Moroso scrubbed the wall after Elliott had forced him up the track.  Elliott then spun right onto the nose of Trickle's Pontiac.  The result of the hit damaged Trickle's nose and briefly lifted Elliott's car off the ground before coming down in the grass on all fours.  The crash can be seen here.

Moroso ended up out on the spot from the crash.  However, Elliott came out of the crash better off than Trickle.  The Melling team made some repairs on pit road and sent Elliott back out.  However, he was quite a bit off the pace for the rest of the race since he didn't have a nose.  Trickle's car was more extensively damaged, requiring a period of time behind the wall.  Trickle would eventually return to the race and finish in 27th, 30 laps down.
