JR Motorsports Signs Austin Theriault for Three Nationwide Series Races

JR Motorsports announced today they've signed 20-year-old late model racer Austin Theriault to drive the No. 5 Chevrolet for three races this season.

"I am excited to be continuing my professional development with JR Motorsports in the Nationwide Series," Theriault said. "I have been working hard for this opportunity, and to be associated with JR Motorsports is a dream come true."

Theriault won the Maine Vintage Race Car Association's Driver of the Year in 2012 and made his NASCAR K&N Pro Series debut after winning the "Maine Young Guns" inaugural competition. Theriault then ran Super Late Models throughout the 2013 season, scoring three Pro All-Star Series (PASS) wins and eight top 10s in 25 races.

The Fort Kent, Maine driver will make his debut on May 18th at Iowa Speedway with sponsorship from SPY, a sunglass company. SPY has created a signature Dale Earnhardt, Jr. 88 Collection as part of their partnership with Earnhardt over the years.

"SPY is happy to offer continued support to the JR Motorsports team and be a part of the exciting Nationwide Series debut of Austin Theriault," Michael Marckx, SPY CEO and president, said in the team press release. "On the heels of our commitment to Dirty Mo Radio, this is only the beginning of the excitement SPY looks to bring to NASCAR, and we're happy to do it with JR Motorsports."

Theriault's Chevy will also carry the Dirty Mo radio logo, a light-hearted podcast focused on the world of JR Motorsports and Earnhardt.

Beyond Iowa, Theriault is scheduled to run New Hampshire in July and Kentucky in September as part of the roundtable of drivers JR Motorsports has selected for the No. 5 car. Kevin Harvick is currently scheduled to run 12 races with different sponsors, but races for other openings exist. Rumors continue even Johanna Long, whose ML Motorsports team shut down in January might be connected to JR Motorsports later in the season.

"Our company is known for putting young talent in cars and giving them a shot on one of NASCAR's biggest stages, and that is what we are giving Austin with this three-race opportunity," Kelley Earnhardt Miller, General Manager of JR Motorsports, said. "This keeps our No. 5 car on the track, and it gives Austin the chance to show what he's got with a lot more eyeballs taking notice."

Currently, the No. 5 JR Motorsports Chevrolet sits fourth in the Nationwide Series owner point standings following Earnhardt Jr. and Harvick's six top 5s in seven races to start the season.

Helio Castroneves Placed on Probation Following Tweet from Sister

IndyCar announced Tuesday Helio Castroneves has been placed on probation through June 30, 2014 for violating Rule 9.3.8 (Social Media Policy Violation) following the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

Following the race, a tweet showed up on Castroneves' account (@h3lio) with some choice words towards race control:

"IndyCar officials continuing not punishing some drivers and giving green flag during an accident."

The tweet was shortly deleted thereafter with the following two tweets posted by Castroneves.

"I apologize for the earlier tweet degrading Indycar series which I did not write or agree with, unfortunately my sister used my twitter .... account without my authorization while expressing her own thoughts, once again I apologize and the steward were correct with the call made."

Throughout the event, Castroneves' sister Kati had access to Helio's account to post race updates for the fans. She also posted an apology about the tweet in her account @Katicastroneves:

"My mistake everyone, last tweet on @h3lio account regarding @indycar was posted by me using his account by mistake.

It was supposed to be my account, not his. The post was already deleted and @h3lio does not agree with my comments".

This punishment was not the first action that a motorsports sanctioning body has taken towards a driver for a published tweet, as NASCAR fined Denny Hamlin $25,000 last year in March for his comments posted on Twitter against the Gen-6 car. Hamlin was also fined $50,000 in 2010 for comments made on Twitter about debris cautions during the Nationwide Series race at Chicagoland Speedway.

OF NOTE:

  • Brad Keselowski's No. 2 Team Penske Ford will carry sponsorship from Detroit Genuine Parts this weekend at Richmond International Speedway.

  • Casey Mears has picked up a new associate sponsor on his No. 13 GEICO Chevrolet. Take 5, home of the 5-Minute Oil Change, will be on the quarterpanels of Mears' car this weekend.
  • Richard Childress Racing has named Matt Shearer as Director, Business Development for RCR. Shearer previously worked at Churchill Downs, Inc. in their partnership development and sales departments.

Today's Featured Commentary
Those Darn Kids
by Mark Howell

Last week, I lamented the apathetic attitude of teenagers regarding automobiles and the freedom of driving. This week, I celebrate the emerging youth movement in NASCAR circa 2014.  Say what you will, but the accomplishments of drivers like Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Darrell "Bubba" Wallace, Jr., and Austin Dillon have renewed the spring in my otherwise slightly-arthritic step. If these hotshoes reflect the future of NASCAR, then let's look forward to better days ahead.

Consider the back-to-back Nationwide Series wins for Chase Elliott. Think closely about the solid Sprint Cup finishes for Kyle Larson and Austin Dillon. What about the energy and talent of Darrell Wallace in the Camping World Truck Series – he being the young man who passed the color barrier and some skilled competition to earn a grandfather clock at Martinsville last season?

If the young Americans of today find driving cars to be not worthy of their time nor attention, then my guess is that the youngsters mentioned above must have missed that memo…

Of course, it's important to recognize that these young drivers all possess the same necessary key to racing success: a family lineage deeply rooted in motorsports. For Elliott and Dillon, the connection is truly relative. For up-and-comers like Larson and Wallace, the path to Victory Lane is paved with parental interest and support that's both emotional and financial.

Last week, I commented on the notion that young people today are disinterested overall in the opportunity of driving an automobile. Owning a car is expensive and obtaining a license is time-consuming, so many young people choose to travel via public transportation or some other means. Such developments don't bode well for the future of NASCAR, which has been trying to ensnare the millennial generation with little success. As NASCAR Nation puts AARP cards into its wallets, perhaps the future of stock car racing rests squarely on the shoulders of its newest "young guns"…

It's also a natural transition for the sport. It was not all-that-many years ago when drivers like Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, and Tony Stewart were called "young guns". Flash back another decade or so, and you would be hearing Jeff Gordon called the same thing. Those youngsters of yesteryear, while still being – relatively speaking – not too ancient, are beginning to show some signs of wear-and-tear (Gordon has said he might retire if he won another championship).  Even Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who has been referred to (for most of his career) by the youthful moniker "Junior", is approaching middle age, turning 40 later this season.  When you look around the garage and see a gray-haired Bobby Labonte, who – for years – was better known as Terry's younger brother, you suddenly get the sense that the times have changed pretty fast.

But for all those who have aged into the late-middle years of their driving careers, there comes another generation that shows the skill, determination, and promise of exciting days ahead.  Just when the accomplishments of Darrell Wallace, Jr. caught the media's attention, along comes Austin Dillon's success, complete with a Sprint Cup pole position at Daytona to begin 2014. As the new season got underway, suddenly Kyle Larson's name started appearing in NASCAR race results (multiple top-10 finishes – including a second place – by a Sprint Cup rookie will do that).

Then, just when it looked like the Peanut Gallery had peaked, we get to watch Dawsonville, Georgia's own Chase Elliott win back-to-back events in the Nationwide Series. Sure, Chase is a second-generation driver hailing from one of racing's most-accomplished families, but such is the way of motorsports. A racer's success is usually propelled by family experience within the sport – it's your kin that gets you in.  For Elliott, that meant steering his learning curve towards a competitive ride with JR Motorsports.

The future looks bright for all of the aforementioned youngsters. As long as they stay healthy, get seat time, and keep both fans and sponsors happy, they will take their rightful place within NASCAR Nation as both winners and champions. It appears as though they've got some of those tracks already covered with more yet to come.

So the AAA suggests that young people aren't interested in driving cars.  OK; the statistics show that pretty clearly.  Fortunately, there are several young people in NASCAR circa 2014 who would tell the AAA otherwise. Brian France should be grateful for that!

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA

Q:  In the 1994 Pontiac Excitement 400, Dick Trickle qualified 20th, a reasonable effort given over 40 full-time entries at the time.  However, Trickle's effort was over shortly after it started. What happened?

Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Tuesday's Answer:

Q:  Before Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway was renovated into the current Richmond International Raceway, the place was known for quirky incidents. Neil Bonnett had one of these strange crashes in 1985.  What happened?

A: Bonnett had an issue in his Budweiser Chevrolet exiting Turn 2 and tried to lock the car down. However, he slid into the guardrail and impaled the car on it. The crash can be seen here. Bonnett was OK, but the wall was predictably damaged in the crash. The red flag was put out in order to fix the rail.
