Well, I didn't *think* you'd had a chance, by the time you posted that,

interesting. I'll try to look up their source, as it disagrees with mine.

Mark Brader quoted Jeopardy!:

>> THIS SPORTING EVENT ABOLISHED IN 393 A.D.
Stephen Perry:
> interesting. I'll try to look up their source, as it disagrees

That's a surprise. After posting my guess, I googled or wikipediaed
it or something, and the answer I found was also 393. I hadn't
remembered the exact year, but I did assume it was well known.
In fact it turns out not to be accurately known at all. Just another
reminder of how spotty our knowledge of ancient times really is.
First, you earlier said you were using an Olympic source -- here's one
of those that agrees with Jeopardy!:
http://www.olympic.org/Documents/Reference_documents_Factsheets/The_Olympic_Games_of_the_Antiquity.pdf
Second, have a look at this page:
http://www.roger-pearse.com/weblog/2012/08/04/when-were-the-olympic-games-abolished/
I was curious enough to do a Google search like
olympics abolished 391..395
(I think that's exactly what I typed, but I'm not sure now) and scan the
result summaries for the first 50 hits. One of them was Roger Pearse's
page cited above, and a few others were irrelevant hits or the summaries
did not give a date. But of the ones that did give a date, the votes were:
1 391
3 392
32 393
2 "about" or "around" 393
1 "393 or 394"
6 394
> yet another off by 1 error. you know the kind. :-)
If not more.
There is also disagreement as to which Theodosius it was.
--
Mark Brader | Obviously an off by 1 error somewhere. You know
Toronto | the kind, where you intend to put something simple
msb@vex.net | like "while (1=0) {" and type "while (1=1) {" instead.

150 - Pete
394 - *** Correct Answer ***
401 - Mark Brader
472 - Dan Tilque
There is some doubt about the exact year, but most say 392-394. See Mark Brader's other post for more details.
Pete is eliminated.
and then there were 2.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2013-11-25,
and should be interpreted accordingly.
On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.
All questions were written by members of Clueless, and are used
here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have been
retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see my
2013-09-15 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".
* Game 9, Round 2 - Geography - Bodies of Water
Any resemblance to certain questions asked by Stephen Perry in
his SWPKO after this was written is purely coincidental, uh-huh.
1. At 3,692 km (2,294 miles), what is the longest river in Europe?
2. At 6,300 km (3,900 miles), what is the longest river in Asia?
3. Name the capital city located at the confluence of the White
and Blue Nile.
4. Name the capital city located at the confluence of the Sava
and Danube Rivers.
5. At 69,485 km² (26,828 sq.mi.), what is the largest lake in
Africa?
6. At 8,135 km² (3,140 sq.mi.), what is the largest lake in South
America?
7. Name the sea that forms part of the water connection between
the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea.
8. With its surface 420 m (1,380 feet) below sea level, what is
the lowest lake in the world?
9. At 1,637 m (5,370 feet), what is the deepest lake in the world?
It contains more water than the Great Lakes combined.
10. At 739 m (2,425 feet), this is the tallest waterfall in North
America and the sixth-tallest in the world. Name it.
* Game 9, Round 3 - Entertainment - "Doctor Who"
Last week was the 50th anniversary of one of the most significant
events in modern history: the premiere of "Doctor Who".
1. The Doctor is a member of the alien species known as Time Lords.
What is the homeworld of the Time Lords?
2. The Doctor's most famous foes are from the planet Skaro.
They have a penchant for exclaiming a particular 4-syllable
threat. Who are they?
3. The Doctor travels through time and space in what? (We need
the short name of this specific fictional device, not something
like "time machine".)
4. <answer 3> is an acronym. What does it stand for?
5. The primary power source of <answer 3> (and of the Time Lords'
time travel technology in general) is known as the Eye of
Harmony. What is it?
6. The chameleon circuit of a <answer 3> in proper working condition
allows it to blend in to any environment. The Doctor's
<answer 3> is not in proper working condition. In what form
is it stuck?
7. Other Time Lords have appeared on the show, sometimes helping
the Doctor and sometimes not. Who is the Doctor's Time Lord
arch-nemesis?
8. The Doctor almost always travels with one or more companions.
For a time, he travelled with a fellow <answer_1>-er -- a Time
Lady. Name her.
9. What contribution to the program and its success was made by
Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire?
10. What Scottish actor, whose films include "Local Hero" and
"In the Loop", is the newest, 13th incarnation of the Doctor?

The other person would say "Sure", and, of course, he'd punch them.

This contest is now open to Mark Brader and Dan Tilque.
You have 72 hours to answer, however a nor'easter is heading this way and I may not be able to get online after it hits later tonight. So if you are able to enter sooner, please do so. I will check regularly for your answers while I
am able. (Just to be clear, we are expecting to lose power completely in the
next 24 hours and to not get it back for several days. I am really hopeful that
they are wrong in their predictions, but I have prepared for the worst.)
For the final round, I have 2 questions. The 2nd question is the tie breaker and will *not* be used if there is a clear victor based on just the 1st question.
This is what happens when I randomize the questions and an easy one ends up
near the bottom.
***
#11. Bernard L. Madoff was sentenced to the maximum time in prison for his Ponzi
Scheme crimes. How many years did Bernie get?
***
tie breaker
***
#12. The Tonight Show has had numerous hosts since it debuted in September
1954, the most famous of which was Johnny Carson. How many episodes did
he host?
***
swp
p.s. the unused question on the slate follows, enter for fun if you like:
#13. Mount Wai'ale'ale in Hawaii had a record rainfall in 1982. How many inches?
