Game 5 is over and STEPHEN PERRY has squeaked out a win.
Congratulations!

This was the easiest round in the original game, and the
second-easiest of the entire season.

> 1. "Baywatch" actress; former CNN journalist.

Pamela Anderson Cooper. 4 for Joshua, Marc, Dan Tilque, Stephen,
Dan Blum, Bruce, Jason, Pete, and Jeff.

I've been wondering what might have made the question's author
think that Cooper was "former"; sorry for not noticing that he isn't.

> 2. "Unforgettable" singer; "Kiss Me Kate" Broadway composer and

Nat "King" Cole Porter (or Natalie Cole Porter). 4 for Joshua,
Calvin, Marc, Stephen, Dan Blum, Peter, Bruce, Jason, Rob, and Pete.

> 3. NDP leader named "the Greatest Canadian"; Canadian "JPod" author.

Tommy Douglas Coupland. 4 for Joshua and Stephen.

> 4. One of the first people to climb Mt. Everest; former US

Sir Edmund Hillary Clinton. 4 for Joshua, Calvin, Marc, Dan Tilque,
Stephen, Dan Blum, Peter, Bruce, Jason, Rob, Pete, and Jeff (who,
oddly, remarked "Why can I only think of Tenzing Norgay?" before
giving the correct answer).

> 5. "Polo" fashion designer; "To Have and Have Not" actress.

Ralph Lauren Bacall. 4 for Joshua, Marc, Dan Tilque, Stephen,
Dan Blum, Peter, Bruce, Rob, Pete, and Jeff.

> 6. The UK's "The Naked Chef"; "JFK" director.

Jamie Oliver Stone. 4 for Joshua, Calvin, Stephen, Dan Blum, Peter,

Lionel Richie Sambora. 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Peter, Jason, and Rob.

Billy Joel Coen. 4 for Joshua, Calvin, Marc, Dan Tilque, Stephen,

In the original game, this was the second-hardest round, after the
audio round. In the entire season, this game's audio round was the
third-hardest, and this round was tied for fourth-hardest with Game 2,
Round 7 (on the US Civil Rights Movement).

"Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit". (Luke 23:46, KJV.
Other translations were acceptable.) 4 for Joshua and Erland.

The passage Stephen quoted is from Luke 24 and comes after Jesus rises
from the dead.

> A2. Matthew says two women came to the sepulchre and found the

More than 4. As Stephen said in a comment while giving the wrong
answer, Luke 25:10 names three of them and mentions "other women"
in the plural. Accepting any number greater than or equal to 5,
as that's close enough for God.

The Madeira Is. were the expected answer and were definitely
discovered by the Portuguese in 1419. But there are disputed claims
that they discovered both the Azores and the Canary Is. earlier;
I'm throwing up my hands and accepting all three answers. 4 for
Joshua (the hard way), Calvin (the hard way), Marc, Dan Tilque,
Stephen, Dan Blum, Peter, Erland, Rob, Pete, and Jeff (the hard way).

Bahamas, Turks & Caicos. 4 for Joshua, Dan Tilque, Stephen,
and Erland. 3 for Calvin and Rob.

Protocol droid. 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Dan Blum, Jason, Rob,

Astromech droid. I didn't know either. 4 for Stephen.

By the way, this exact "before and after" construct was used for
one of the puzzles on "Wheel of Fortune" this past week, probably
during the time this question set was active.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2013-10-28,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Clueless, and are used
here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have been
retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see my
2013-09-15 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

Game 6, being the last game in October, had an overall Halloween
theme (except for Current Events). :-(

* Game 6, Round 2 - Geography - Haunted Places in Toronto

Please assume the words "said to (be)" as appropriate.

1. This historic hotel and former artists' colony was built in
1914 on top of the Scarborough Bluffs for Col. Harold Bickford.
The grounds surrounding it have had a number of unusual
sightings. The hotel closed in 2001, and part of the building
was demolished in 2009. Name the hotel.

2. Built in 1853, this college at the University of Toronto is
home to one of the city's great enduring legends, the untimely
death (and apparent return) of stonemason Ivan Reznikoff,
who attempted to murder his co-worker and romantic rival Paul
Diabolos with an axe. A struggle ensued and Reznikoff ended
up dead. Panicked, Diabolos hid the body somewhere in the
building's construction site and fled. Name the college.

3. Reputedly the most haunted house in Toronto, it is named after
the former resident who died there in 1861. Stories included
appearances of the resident working his printing press years
after his death. Today, the house is a municipally run museum
depicting 1860s Victorian life. Who was this former resident?

4. This historic building, built in 1888 as a branch of the Bank of
Montreal, is reportedly haunted by the ghost of a young teller
named Dorothy who shot herself with a .38 caliber in the women's
washroom in 1953. What is the name of the attraction that now
resides here?

5. This national historic site is home to the former mill opened by
two brothers-in-law in the early 1830s. One of them, stricken
by grief over the death of his wife during childbirth, threw
himself into a well in 1834. His ghost apparently still shows up
to work, opening and closing doors, banging around, playing with
the lights, and giving workmen and visitors some scary surprises.
Name the current site or former mill.

6. Built in 1868, this heritage building was home to the Massey
family in the 1880s. In 1915, Lillian Massey died in the
second-floor bedroom and her grief-stricken maid hanged
herself above the main foyer. There have been reports of
phantom children's footsteps and laughter upstairs where
the children's quarters were. The building was bequeathed to
Victoria College and became the first home of radio station CFRB,
then an art gallery. It was then converted to a restaurant,
and was purchased by its current owners in 1976. Name it.

7. One of the oldest landmarks in Toronto, this lighthouse was
the site of the gruesome murder in 1815 of its keeper, John
Paul Rademuller. Apparently, on occasion, he can be sighted
climbing up the tower or searching the grounds for his lost
limbs. Name the landmark or the landform -- cape, island,
whatever -- where it is located.

8. When opened in 1929, this was the tallest building in the
British Commonwealth; it has welcomed over 40,000,000 visitors
over the years. According to John Robert Colombo's book
"Mysteries of Ontario", the 8th floor has the spirit of an
older man with gray hair walking the halls at night. Name it.

9. This former residence of a Scottish immigrant and his family
is supposedly haunted by the ghost of his son's mistress,
who lived in a secret room and hanged herself there because
she felt increasingly neglected by her lover. The house was
eventually sold to the U of T and is now part of Regis College.
Give the last name of the family who owned the house.

10. Built in 1836, this museum is the former home of city surveyor
John George Howard and his wife Jemima. It has been host to
a number of unexplained sightings, some of which have been
identified as resembling Mrs. Howard. Name it.

* Game 6, Round 3 - Miscellaneous - Popular Halloween Costumes

These random questions were inspired by popular Halloween costumes.

1. Zombies will undoubtedly be one of the most popular costumes
this year. What ber-popular AMC TV series features Rick Grimes,
the leader of a post-apocalyptic battle against flesh-eating
"walkers"?

2. One of the easy, no-planning-involved costumes is to dress up
as a bum. Name the man, with the nickname "Bum", who was the
head coach of the Houston Oilers from 1975-80, becoming the
winningest coach in franchise history. He recently passed away
on October 18, 2013.

3. Another easy costume for a young boy is to dress up as a woman.
This male actor portrayed "Mrs. Featherbottom", who was actually
the "analrapist" Tobias Funke dressed up as a woman, on several
episodes of the show "Arrested Development". Name the actor.

4. Vampires are common on Halloween night. Who portrayed Buffy,
the Vampire Slayer, on the hit TV series?

5. Last Halloween, Terence dressed up as a penguin. This 2006
film featured an emperor penguin named Mumble, who could not
sing, but instead had the unique penguin ability to tap dance.
What is the name of this fun children's film?

6. Countless ghosts parade the streets every Halloween. The most
famous scene in the movie "Ghost" featured Demi Moore seductively
making pottery, and then taking it one step further with the
sexy ghost played by Patrick Swayze. What song famously played
during this scene?

7. Pretty young ladies often like to dress up as sexy cops. A sexy
international spy, Sydney Bristow, captured a generation of male
followers in her hit series "Alias". Who played Sydney Bristow?

8. The devil is a popular character in biblical stories, as well as
on Halloween. In the film "South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut",
who is Satan's gay lover?

9. Many little girls will dress up as a witch this year. In "The
Princess Bride", Miracle Max famously said the line "Get back,
witch"! -- and got the reply "I'm not your witch, I'm your wife".
Name either the actor who played Miracle Max, or the actress who
played his wife, Valerie.

10. Pirates are a popular costume for boys and girls alike.
The 2005 adult film "Pirates" starred Jesse Jane, Carmen Luvana,
and Janine, who achieved mainstream fame through appearances
in several Blink-182 music videos. "Pirates" was a parody of
what popular 2003 mainstream film?

On the last question, the full title is required. If you just said "Pirates of the Caribbean", go back and complete it.

That should have said Canadiana Geography, of course.

Guild Inn. My sister-in-law lives a few blocks from where it was.

University College. 4 for Stephen.

William Lyon Mackenzie.

Hockey Hall of Fame.

Distillery district, Gooderham & Worts mill (and later distillery).

Euclid House or the Keg Mansion.

Gibraltar (or Gibralter) Point Lighthouse, Toronto Island (also
called Centre Island). 4 for Stephen.

I accepted "Gibraltar Point" as a sufficient answer, as it's certainly
the name of the lighthouse; but whether or not that's also the name
of "the landmark where it is located" is debatable. The lighthouse
hasn't moved, but the shape of the island has changed so much, both
due to natural effects and landfill, that it's hard to identify any
part of it as "Gibralter Point" today. This city-issued pictorial
map of the island (which has south at the top!) shows the lighthouse
but has no landform marked Gibralter Point.

http://www1.toronto.ca/staticfiles/city_of_toronto/parks_forestry__recreation/zoos/files/pdf/toronto_island_map.pdf

Google Maps likewise doesn't show any such landform, but it's weak on
natural features. This other modern map

http://neuro-tech.net/~chie/wp-content/island_map2.jpg

shows how the lighthouse (5) is now well back from the shoreline,
and marks Gibraltar Point as the nearest corner of the island,
to the southwest. But these 19th century maps

http://static.torontopubliclibrary.ca/da/images/MC/atlas-r-124.jpg
http://torontoisland.org/portals/3/trust/oldmap.gif
http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa112/thecharioteer/Buildings/islands1884.jpg

all clearly show Gibraltar or Gibralter Point as the then-existing
peninsula at the northwest corner of the island, where the airport
now is -- even though the last and best of these maps, dated 1884,
also shows the lighthouse in its present position, and the city's
official web page about the lighthouse

http://www1.toronto.ca/wps/portal/contentonly?vgnextoid=31a0dada600f0410VgnVCM10000071d60f89RCRD&vgnextchannel=34e9dada600f0410VgnVCM10000071d60f89RCRD

refers to "its site on Gibraltar Point". All I can think is that
the southwest corner of the island must once have been considered
as the base of the peninsula, so it was appropriate to name the
lighthouse that way.

Oh well, if we can't even agree on the name of the main island in the
group (in addition to the two possible names today, on one of those
old maps it's called the Island of Hiawatha!), I guess it should be
no surprise that this secondary place name is equally confusing.

Fairmont Royal York Hotel. "Royal York" was sufficient, of course.

third-easiest in the entire season.

While this wouldn't affect the gameplay or scoring, Patrick Swayze's
character was still alive during the "Unchained Melody" scene in "Ghost."

Golden Oldies Lyrics Quiz #324
Recordings #01-25 were from 1955 through 1969
Due 5:00 p.m. EST (GMT-5), Friday, January 31, 2014
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

At Huntington and Malibu
They're shooting the pier
At Rincon they're walking the nose
#01)

Someone really loves you
#02)

And he sees the cattle grazin'
Where a century before
Santa Anna's guns were blazin'
And the cannons used to roar
#03)

[voice 1]
And meanwhile back in the States
[voice 2]
Baby, baby, let's make romance
You know your old time lover
Hasn't got a chance
#04)

Along came McDonald with his trusty gun
And he goes
[five drum beats]
Everybody run
#05)

Young enough to dance and sing
Old enough to get that swing
#06)

Doing things I used to do
They think are new
I sit and watch
#07)

When she was just a kid
Her clothes were hand-me-downs
#08)

I go alone now
Calling your name
After losing at the game
You took me by surprise
#09)

I got no deeds to do
No promises to keep
Dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep
Let the morning time drop all its petals on me
#10)

I shouldn't hang around
Actin' like her brother
In a few more years
They'd call us right for each other
And why
If I wait I'll just die
#11)

I still love you
Just like I did before
But before you smile
And walk through the door
#12)

Mama turned off the front porch light
Sayin', "Come in daughter.
That's enough for tonight."
#13)

He'll always be my true love, my true love, my true love
From now until forever, forever, forever
#14)

He rolled his big sleeves up
And a brand new world began
He created a woman
And-a lots of lovin' for a man
#15)

I remember when I was down
I was lost
But I've been found
#16)

Baby let me be around you every night
Run your fingers through my hair
And cuddle me real tight
#17)

Give me a chance
To be more than a summer romance to you
All the letters you'd promised to write
Won't help me on a cold winter's night
#18)

And I'll admit I wasn't very smart
So I went out and found myself a guy that's so much wiser
And he taught me the way to win your heart
#19)

Go ahead and wreck your health (hmm)
Go play your hand
You big talkin' man
Make a big fool of yourself
#20)

Sometimes I call her up at home
Knowin' she's busy (she's busy)
And ask if she can get away
And meet me and grab a bite to eat (a bite to eat)
#21)

And did you feel much more better
When he held you in his arms?
#22)

Get out of here
Before I have the time
To change my mind
'Cause I'm afraid we'll go too far
#23)

I love you
There's nothing to hide
It's better
Than burning inside
I love you
No use to pretend
#24)

Don't hurt me now
For her love belongs to me
And if she should tell you, "I love you" woh-oh-oh-oh
And if she tempts you with her charms
#25)

------------
Tie-Breakers
------------

Let me go on loving you
Tonight, tonight
Making love to only you
#T1)

I told my friends
He'll never get my heart
And when I kissed you
Had to resist you
Said, "Better go"
I hurt you so
#T2)

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2013-10-28,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Clueless, and are used

* Game 6, Round 4 - History - Horrible History

1. What Norwegian-American serial killer murdered her various
husbands and suitors, on a farm in La Porte, Indiana, around
1900-08?

2. What is the last name of the Nebraska couple who murdered
drifters and farmhands and then made a quilt out of the dead
men's clothing? In 1990 they became the oldest couple ever
sentenced to death in the US.

3. In 1892, who allegedly "took an ax, and gave her mother forty
whacks"?

4. Give either the real name or the sensationalized media nickname
of the woman murder victim killed in 1947 in Los Angeles, and
found sliced in half at the waist.

5. What is the name of the Hungarian noblewoman (lived 1560-1614)
who was known as the "Blood Countess" for the legendary
suggestion that she bathed in her victims' blood?

6. According to a pamphlet published in 1521, around half a century
after his death: "He roasted children, whom he fed to their
mothers. And [he] cut off the breasts of women, and forced their
husbands to eat them. After that, he had them all impaled."
Who was he?

7. What 15th-century Dominican friar and Grand Inquisitor is
infamous as a torturer of Jews, Muslims, and heretics?
He was played by Mel Brooks, who sang "The Inquisition", in
"The History of the World, Part I".

8. Which Christian martyr was roasted alive on a giant grill,
during the persecution of Valerian in the 3rd century?

9. By what other name is "Leather Apron" better known? In 2006
he was voted the worst Briton in history.

10. Dubbed "America's first serial killer", during the 1893 World's
Fair in Chicago this murderer lured victims to his "castle" or
"hotel", where their bodies were dropped by secret chute to
the basement and dismembered. ObCanCon: He also buried some
victims in a cellar in Toronto. What was his name?

* Game 6, Round 6 - Sports & Leisure - D&D Creatures

The fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons has been in
production since 1974. Here we give you description paraphrased
from the first-edition "Monster Manual" (1977), and you name the
creature being described.

1. This is a reptilian monster. Although it has 8 legs, its
slow metabolic process allows it only slow movement. While it
has strong, toothy jaws, its major weapon is its gaze, by means
of which it is able to turn to stone any fleshly creature that
meets its glance.

Frequency: Uncommon
Armor Class: 4
Hit Dice: 6 + 1
Intelligence: Animal
Alignment: Neutral

2. This monster is created magically by fashioning a man-shaped
clay statue, then proceeding through an uninterrupted ritual
using a resurrection spell, an animate-objects spell, a commune
spell, a prayer spell, and a bless spell. Once created, the
creature is under the command of the cleric who created it.

Frequency: Very Rare
Armor Class: 7
Hit Dice: 50 hit points
Intelligence: Non-
Alignment: Neutral

3. This foul, voracious carnivore has the body of a vulture,
but the upper torso and head of a woman. Any creature hearing
its sweet-sounding call will proceed towards it unless they
save vs. magic.

Frequency: Rare
Armor Class: 7
Hit Dice: 3
Intelligence: Low
Alignment: Chaotic Evil

4. This inhabits sylvan woodlands. It is interested primarily
in sport -- frolicking, piping, chasing wood nymphs, etc.
It resents intrusion (except by comely females), but can
sometimes be lured with superior wine. The skin of the upper
body is tan to light brown, its hair elsewhere being medium
brown, reddish brown, or dark brown. Horns and hooves are black.

Frequency: Uncommon
Armor Class: 5
Hit Dice: 5
Intelligence: Very
Alignment: Neutral

5. The globular body of this monster is supported by levitation;
it floats slowly about, as it wills. Atop the sphere are
10 eyestalks, while in its central area is a great 11th eye
and a large mouth filled with pointed teeth. It is able to
withstand the loss of its eyestalks, so these members are not
computed as part of its hit-point damage potential, and lost
eyestalks will eventually grow back. The various eyes each have
a different function -- charm spells, sleep spell, slow spell,
disintegrate ray, anti-magic ray, and more.

Frequency: Very rare
Armor Class: 0/2/7
Hit Dice: 45-75 hit points
Intelligence: Exceptional
Alignment: Lawful evil

6. This is probably the result of genetic experimentation by some
insane wizard. It is a ravenous eater, aggressive hunter,
and evil-tempered at all times. It has brownish-black to
yellow-brown fur and feathers. It attacks with its great claws
and snapping beak, and then grasps a victim and squeezes and
bites it to death. If it scores a paw hit of 18 or better with
either of its forelimbs, it has dragged the victim to itself;
the opponent will then take an additional 2-16 hit points
damage from the hug on that melee round and every melee round
thereafter until the monster is killed.

Frequency: Rare
Armor Class: 5
Hit Dice: 5 + 2
Intelligence: Low
Alignment: Neutral

7. This creature is found only in warm climates. It attacks by
means of a stab with two tusks, a grab and squeeze with its
trunk, and then two tramplings with its front feet. It is
relatively intelligent and will not trunk-attack creatures
which will harm its trunk (with a spiky hat, for example).
It can be trained to carry equipment and/or men.

Frequency: Common
Armor Class: 6
Hit Dice: 10
Intelligence: Semi-
Alignment: Neutral

8. Its hindquarters are those of a huge goat, its forepaws are those
of a lion, its body sports dragon wings, and it has 3 large
heads. Its dragon head can breathe fire, causing 3-24 points
damage (saving throw applicable).

Frequency: Rare
Armor Class: 6/5/2
Hit Dice: 9
Intelligence: Semi-
Alignment: Chaotic Evil

9. This prefers a dismal lair, so it's typically found in caves
or underground. It has a lion body, bat wings, and human head.
It is usually found outside its lair hunting for human victims,
its favorite prey.

Frequency: Uncommon
Armor Class: 4
Hit Dice: 6+3
Intelligence: Low
Alignment: Lawful Evil

10. An entire community of these lives in a single dwelling -- a
veritable castle of mud and logs, with walls at least 5 feet
(1.5 m) thick. These intelligent but docile creatures will flee
any attack if at all possible, but if cornered, or if their huge
lodge is threatened, they will fight fiercely. They sometimes
trade, and if coins or other valuables are offered, they can
sometimes be persuaded to undertake the building of structures
if there is water near the building site. Give the monster's
full name.

Frequency: Very Rare
Armor Class: 6
Hit Dice: 4
Intelligence: Low to Average
Alignment: Neutral
