Quiroga, Jones Lead CWTS Practice Sessions From Phoenix

Rookie German Quiroga led the first of two Camping World Truck Series practice sessions Thursday at Phoenix International Raceway. While running just seven laps, the driver of the No. 77 Net 10 Wireless / OtterBox Toyota posted a speed of 129.940 mph. Erik Jones, who will be making his fifth career start, ran second quickest. Timothy Peters, Ty Dillon and Ron Hornaday, Jr. rounded out the top 5. Only four trucks--John Hunter Nemechek, Daniel Hemric, Darrell Wallace, Jr. and Steve Smith--ran at least ten consecutive laps in the session.

A couple hours later, Erik Jones led the series' final practice session with a fast lap of 134.394. Most of the drivers were happier with their trucks in the second session, which was held much closer to the actual race time. Cale Gale ran second quickest, followed by Ryan Blaney. Jeb Burton and Ross Chastain rounded out the top 5.

The final practice session wasn't without its drama, though. According to reports from NASCAR.com reporter Alan Cavanna on Twitter, Darrell Wallace, Jr. wrecked his primary truck after contact with Chad Frewaldt and later expressed his displeasure by reportedly throwing punches. Both drivers declined to comment after exiting the infield care center. Wallace will have to go to a backup truck and was called to the hauler after Frewaldt visited with series director Chad Little.

Qualifying for tonight's Lucas Oil 150 will be held at 2:30 PM local time (4:30 PM ET), and the race will begin at 6:00 PM local time (8:00 PM ET).

And then, Toby will keep the excitement going by giving the command for drivers to start their engines and begin 267 laps of championship racing."

"Need For Speed" Mustang Part of Ford Racing Pace Car Lineup at Homestead

When the Sprint Cup Series takes to Homestead-Miami Speedway for next weekend's Ford EcoBoost 400 season finale, the field will be led by the a special Ford Mustang. The car was designed specifically for the movie, set to debut in Spring 2014, and features a custom wide body, 22-inch alloy wheels and larger intakes for the supercharged V-8 engine capable of 900 horsepower. Additionally, low profile mirrors and extended rocker panels were used to reduce drag.

"When the opportunity to showcase the 'Need for Speed' Mustang at our marquee event came up a few months ago it was a no-brainer to make it the centerpiece of Ford Championship Weekend," said Tim Duerr, Ford Racing motorsports marketing manager.  "We have always tried to incorporate some of our latest products that make up Ford's versatile car and truck lineup, and we feel the three vehicles we're using this year continues that trend."

Additionally, the new F-150 Tremor will pace the Truck Series season finale, and the Mustang GT500 will lead the field in Saturday's Nationwide Series Ford EcoBoost 300 on Saturday.

"This lineup of new Ford vehicles is befitting of the three NASCAR championship races that we'll be hosting at Homestead-Miami Speedway," said track President Matthew Becherer.  "Ford is a fantastic partner and we're thrilled that its cars will be on display for a packed house and millions more to see on television across the world."

The 2013 Championship Weekend will mark the 12th consecutive year Ford has served as the title sponsor.

Jimmie Johnson Foundation Announces $470,000 in Education Grants

Earlier this week, championship leader Jimmie Johnson visited the NASCAR Hall of Fame to announced the recipients for the 2013 Jimmie Johnson Foundation / Lowe's Toolbox for Education Champions Grants. The grants were awarded to schools in Johnson and wife, Chandra's, hometowns along with Charlotte, NC where they currently live. In addition to the schools that were spotlighted in the announcement, several facilities also received technology grants to purchase new computers.

"When you hear from students like Daniel you realize how much the kids we support really appreciate the opportunity to learn," said Johnson, who is currently atop the standings in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship.  "The fact that the Jimmie Johnson Foundation and the Lowe's Toolbox for Education program can come together to impact the learning experience for these kids is very gratifying."

Say What?!?

"Obviously, they changed the track a couple years ago and it is a lot racier. I really like the track and the area. It is another one of my favorite tracks and areas to visit. We are bringing the car we raced at Loudon (New Hampshire Motor Speedway). It was tore up in that race, but the guys have put it back together right. As far as doing something away from the track, I will probably go hiking in Scottsdale (Ariz.). The last two years the team went out on their own. It was without support from being a part of a big organization and that has been tough. The choice they made to go out on their own I supported. They needed to go in that direction. The battle was still to get the team in position to go forward. We went through the trenches together to get there. At the end of the day, I was a part of the puzzle where I got to help put the pieces together where the puzzle did not fall apart. I always woke up everyday and put my best foot forward." Bobby Labonte

"Phoenix was my first down force race with this group and I thought we ran really well earlier this season.  We just had a few problems during the race, we got back in the pack, and we just weren't able to get back up front in the end.  I'm really looking forward to getting back to Phoenix, especially after our success and Loudon and Martinsville this season, and I think that hopefully it will be a good track for us.  The short flat tracks have been good to us this year and I'm hoping that they continue to be as we look ahead to this weekend." Matt Kenseth

"I won the spring Nationwide race at Phoenix last year so that was pretty good. I finished fifth there this year in the spring, but I wrecked there last fall. So, let's hope we have more of a spring result than a fall result. I haven't been in a Cup car in Phoenix in a long time — not since the repave — so I know it's going to drive a little bit different. I feel like the MWR program is pretty good. I know the 55 sat on the pole there last year, so they definitely have a good short track program. We'll go there and see where it takes us, but I can't really give you an honest answer what to expect because I haven't been there on the new pavement in a Cup car. Two of the last three races that we have been there in the Nationwide car is a win and a top-five so I feel pretty good about that." Elliott Sadler

Keepin' It Short: The World Comes to See "The World"
by Mike Neff

Putting "World" in the name of any kind of event can be a slippery slope. While it may seem like the world is watching, in reality it is probably just the people in the general area and a handful of others who follow the activity in the country where it is taking place. The World Series is a perfect example. While Boston has a very large following, and the St. Louis Cardinals have long been a huge draw for fans across North America, the appeal for people to travel from around the globe to see the Series is not near what it used to be, especially with the Internet providing the instant access that it offers. The World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte is a truly worldwide event.

While the vast majority of fans who will attend the World Finals are from North America (tickets have been sold to fans from all 50 states and the seven provinces of Canada), the reach of the event goes beyond the boundaries imposed by the oceans surrounding the continent. In addition to those fans there are race fans from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Australia and France making the trip to Concord, North Carolina to watch the three major DIRTCar division winners crowned for the fifth year in a row.

The demand for the World Finals has become so big that the folks at Charlotte Motor Speedway have increased the amount of camping spots that have electrical power from thirty to ninety. All of those camping spots have already been claimed for this weekend. The corporate suites are sold out for the weekend and the sponsor / fan zone has spilled over to the pit side of the track as well. There are thirty companies who will be on display on the pit side of the track due to the huge presence of racers from everywhere that will be in attendance this weekend. The fan zone has been expanded to 80,000 square feet for this years Finals.

Brett Hearn, the point leader for the Big Block Modifieds has been to the World Finals since the mods were invited and he's seen the event grow every year.

"If you are a dirt fan, you have to come to the World Finals." Hearn said over lunch on Wednesday. "Everyone who has anything to do with dirt racing has some kind of representation at the track. It is not only great for fans but it is a great place for manufacturers to get their products in front of the people who use them."

The World of Outlaws Late Model point leader Josh Richards echoed Hearn's sentiments.

"The World Finals is a bucket list item," Richards said. "You need to come to this event and experience all of it."

The people at Charlotte Motor Speedway know how to put on a show and the pyrotechnics at the World Finals are legendary. Qualifying, heat races and feature events will be contested Friday and Saturday, with well over 100 cars on the track from the three divisions.

While tickets are running low, there are still seats available for the shows on Friday and Saturday night. If you can make it to Concord this weekend, you need to check this event off of your bucket list.

TODAY ON THE FRONTSTRETCH:
by Matt Stallknecht
by the Frontstretch Staff

~~~~~~~~~~
FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: In 1995, Ernie Irvan was the dominant man in Phoenix.  After crashing his primary car in practice, Irvan flew up from the rear to lead a race-high 111 laps.  However, in ten laps, he went from leading the race to out.  What happened?
Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!
Thursday's Answer:
Q: Davey Allison claimed victory in the 1991 Pyroil 500K at Phoenix International Raceway, the first Winston Cup race from Phoenix aired on TNN.  However, for Richard Petty, one of the few Cup regulars with experience at Phoenix before the Cup Series traveled to Arizona, the day didn't last very long.  What happened?
A: The King ended up being a victim here.  Shortly after a restart, Harry Gant and Brett Bodine had contact exiting Turn 4.  Gant spun in front of much of the field.  Petty couldn't slow down quick enough and ran right in the back of Dave Marcis, putting Marcis in the inside wall.  Petty tried to continue, but was hit from behind by Larry Pearson and spun into the inside wall.  Winston West regulars Hershel McGriff and Gary Collins were also involved.  The crash can be seen in real time here.
Petty, Marcis and Collins were out on the spot after the crash.  Gant and McGriff continued after repairs in the pits and finished 23rd (five laps down) and 27th (12 laps down), respectively.
