Jimmie Johnson Becomes First Athlete to Co-Host SportsCenter
Winning six Sprint Cup titles can open a lot of doors, and in Jimmie Johnson's case, he was given the honor of co-hosting SportsCenter alongside anchors John Anderson and Lindsay Czarniak on Tuesday.
Johnson is the first athlete in the 34-year history of ESPN's flagship television program to serve as a host. He follows in the footsteps of actors Billy Crystal and Ken Jeong, both of whom were granted this same rare opportunity in 2012.
"I don't know if SportsCenter knows what they are getting themselves into," Johnson commented beforehand. "It's probably a good thing I'm there pretty much all day preparing."
Johnson also admitted that Billy Crystal and Ken Jeong left 'tough shoes to fill'. When the show began, however, he appeared as comfortable as he did in lane Sunday night, and even joked with Anderson and Czarniak on occasion. He even responded to comments made by Donovan McNabb after the former NFL quarterback said that NASCAR drivers aren't real athletes.
"We're always looking for opportunities to change it up and give SportsCenter viewers a different take on the day's news, have some fun and do some memorable television," said Jack Obringer, SportsCenter senior coordinating producer. "And having a six-time champion like Jimmie Johnson on your set is pretty cool."
Performing the tasks assigned to a regular SportsCenter host such as presenting the day's sports highlights and conducting interviews with World Series champion Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Oklahoma Sooners head football coach Bob Stoops ended a slate of broadcast appearances for Johnson that included Monday night's Late Show with David Letterman and Tuesday morning's LIVE! with Kelly and Michael.
Tony Stewart Teams Up with Crew Chief Chad Johnston
It hasn't been all rest and relaxation for Tony Stewart as he continues to heal from multiple surgeries performed on a fractured right fibula and tibia.
Stewart-Haas Racing's announcement that former Michael Waltrip Racing crew chief Chad Johnston will replace Steve Addington as the crew chief of the No. 14 next season was just one of multiple personnel changes that took effect within the organization on Tuesday.
Johnston joins SHR after requesting his release as the crew chief for Martin Truex, Jr. because of his connection in the cheating scandal that nearly manipulated the driver lineup for this year's Chase. The man he's replacing, Addington, departs after failing to live up to the expectations set by former Stewart crew chief Darian Grubb.
Stewart recorded four wins over the past two seasons under Addington but ultimately hasn't performed to the level of his 2011 championship run.
SHR also announced that former competition director Greg Zipadelli has been moved to a new position, vice president of competition, responsible for managing each of the organization's four teams. Additionally, Matt Borland was named vice president of engineering, moving from a position as the crew chief for Ryan Newman's No. 39 team.
Former race engineer Daniel Knost has been promoted to crew chief and will work with Kurt Busch. Busch's number for the 2014 campaign will be 41 and the Chevrolet will be sponsored by Haas Automation.
"Our greatest asset at Stewart-Haas Racing is our people," Stewart said. "Obviously, there is a lot of change happening for 2014 as we grow to four teams and bring in Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch.
"With our new management structure and the crew chiefs we have in place, we're well positioned to handle whatever challenges come our way. Collectively, we have the experience and wherewithal necessary for each of our teams to perform at the highest level possible."
The latest set of moves comes after SHR announced that Rodney Childers would serve as crew chief for Harvick and the No. 4 team in August.
Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. Reunites with Crew Chief Mike Kelley
Sprint Cup Series rookie of the year Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. will be reunited with former crew chief Mike Kelley next season, Roush Fenway Racing announced on Tuesday. Kelley and Stenhouse combined for Nationwide Series championships in 2011 and 2012. He replaces Scott Graves, who moves to Roush's NNS team driven by Trevor Bayne.
"It's really exciting to team back up with Mike," said Stenhouse. "Obviously we have a great chemistry and we have had a great deal of success in the past. Scott (Graves) did a great job of guiding us through our rookie season this year and we look forward to continuing that growth next season."
News 'N' Notes:
- While no official statement has been released by either NASCAR or Richard Childress Racing regarding the cause of the No. 27 Chevrolet's fiery explosion on Lap 232 of the Ford EcoBoost 400, former crew chief *Chris Andrews* seems to have already found a solution. Andrews stated that rubber from an earlier blown tire became entwined with the axle and caught fire because of heat from the brake rotors during an interview with FOX Sports' Matt Clarke on NASCAR Race Hub's 'Teardown'.
- Penske Racing officially cut ties with Sam Hornish, Jr. after the driver narrowly lost the Nationwide Series title in the season finale at Homestead-Miami. The announcement came following speculation that Hornish would be departing the organization because of its move to one NNS team in 2014.
After a drama filled roller coaster ride, it is time to bid a fond farewell to the 2013 NASCAR season. While many drivers and crews might be heaving a sigh of relief, I can't help but feel a bit melancholy this week as I play witness to what feels like a real end to the history of this sport, but as the saying goes, when one chapter ends another must begin.
So, as we look down the track to February, many fans are sure to be wondering what NASCAR's latest chapter holds. While I am no fortune teller, this year has definitely given us many clues on what fans might be in store for.
Before we can move on to the future, fans who have been following NASCAR since its earlier heyday may be forced to say goodbye to some true legends of the sport. Although it will be a challenge, you have to feel honored to have been a part of the successful racing careers of veterans like Bobby Labonte, Mark Martin and Jeff Burton. While the future of these true iconic athletes continues to be a mystery, the one certainty is that each of these drivers will forever be in our hearts and minds, as we watch those who had dreams of one day competing alongside talent of this nature begin to rise to the top.
Who is going to fill these illustrious shoes? As NASCAR continues on its target to a more youthful audience, the landscape of drivers will definitely begin to change. New chapters often introduce new characters, right?
So, who will be our latest emerging characters? I would be amiss if I didn't start with a driver who some have touted as "the newest Tony Stewart". Past Sprint car and NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Champion, Kyle Larson made many heads turn this season in both the NASCAR Nationwide Series as well limited Sprint Cup races. Larson completed his first full Nationwide Series season with a runner up finish in the final race of the season (his fourth on the year) as well as a top 10 in points. The 21-year-old will follow up his successful rookie season in the Nationwide Series by replacing Juan Pablo Montoya in the No. 42 Chevrolet for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing in 2014.
Larson will most likely be in good company next season as another rising Nationwide Series superstar roars into the Sprint Cup Series in 2014. While not official, enough information has leaked out to help fans begin to form a clearer picture of where the grandson of Richard Childress is sure to be competing next season.
Two characters who made waves this season who I predict will have eyes tuning in and the social media world buzzing are Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Danica Patrick. The real cliffhanger for NASCAR's newest Hollywood couple is will Stenhouse's 2013 Sprint Cup Series Rookie of the Year win over Patrick have this couple splitting up in the not to distant future or will they use this as the fuel to further their racing fires both on and off the track?
As NASCAR's future chapter emerges into 2014, some past characters and cliffhangers will also be left to answer. Will an injured hero return to the racing seat and show that nothing can stop him from going out on the top? Will Hendrick Motorsports and six-time champion Jimmie Johnson continue to be the team to beat or will the king lose his crown? Can NASCAR truly recover from this season's controversy and emerge the victor? Most importantly, will fans finally see excitement return to the track?
With all of these cliffhangers, how could you not want to turn the page to find out WTF happens next?
As I bid adieu to my rookie season as a Frontstretch.com columnist, I would like to thank all of our readers for being part of our past, present and what is sure to be our successful future. FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: The 2001 Grand Prix of Brazil was essentially the coming out party for Juan Pablo Montoya, who was in only his third Grand Prix. However, it ended way too early. What happened?
Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!
Monday's Answer:
Q: The 2003 Grand Prix of Brazil is best known for the crashes involving Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso that brought the race to a premature end. However, Giancarlo Fisichella was initially denied his maiden Formula One victory. Why?
A: In FIA-sanctioned events, red flags are treated differently than how NASCAR treats them. In the case of the aforementioned 2003 race at Interlagos, the red flag was thrown after 75 percent of the race was completed. That means that the race is automatically complete. However, there is also a two-lap countback rule that determines the final results (Note: This is the same rule that gave the duo of Jim Richards and Mark Skaife overall victory in the 1992 Tooheys 1000 after Richards crashed his Nissan Skyline twice in a downpour).
At the time, Fisichella was judged to have not taken the lead from Kimi Raikkonen early enough, resulting in Raikkonen getting the victory. However, upon further review, Fisichella was found to have started another lap before the red flag was displayed. That allowed Fisichella to claim the victory. However, this wasn't rectified in Brazil. Fisichella was given the winner's trophy about 12 days later at the Grand Prix of San Marino in Italy.
