The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series kicked off on-track activities Thursday with an extra practice session at Kansas Speedway. Jimmie Johnson, coming off the heels of a historic eighth win at Dover last weekend, set the fastest speed with a lap of 182.648 MPH.

Carl Edwards was second quick on the day with a speed of 182.531 MPH. He was followed by Kurt Busch in third (181.971 MPH), Jeff Burton (181.867 MPH) and Paul Menard (181.763 MPH) rounded out the top 5.

Joey Logano (181.525 MPH) posted the sixth quickest time, followed by Kevin Harvick (181.446 MPH). Kyle Busch (181.165 MPH), Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. (181.074 MPH) and Justin Allgaier (180.868 MPH) rounded out the top 10.

The Sprint Cup Series will be back on track on Friday with a regular practice session scheduled to run from 12:30 - 2:00 PM ET; qualifying follows at 5:10 PM ET to set the field for Sunday's Hollywood Casino 400. The current track record in Sprint Cup qualifying at Kansas is held by Matt Kenseth, with a speed of 191.864 MPH -- a record he set in April of this year.

Hackenbracht And Ingersoll Rand Team To Give Cancer The Boot

NASCAR Nationwide Series rookie Chad Hackenbracht and Ingersoll Rand, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month are teaming up to give cancer the boot. The National Breast Cancer Foundation will be featured on Hackenbracht's No. 44 car in next weekend's Nationwide Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Hackenbracht will also wear a special, pink-themed fire suit and helmet to go along with the special pink and black paint scheme.

"Aside from looking good, it's a great cause that Ingersoll Rand and the National Breast Cancer Foundation have come together on," said Hackenbracht. "Auctioning off my suit and helmet to help raise money is a great way to get the fans involved. This cause hits a little close to home, as my cousin is a breast cancer survivor. I'm looking forward to helping Ingersoll Rand and the National Breast Cancer Foundation promote awareness to NASCAR fans."

Ingersoll Rand is a worldwide leader in air compressors, tools, fluid management, and material handling equipment. Their "Give Cancer The Boot" campaign got underway on October 1st and will carry on through the month of October, while supplies last. Donations up to $50,000 will be given to the National Breast Cancer Foundation by Ingersoll Rand. The foundation funds the early detection plan, educational programs, online support communities, mammogram and diagnostic services, as well as breast cancer research. You can see a full list of qualifying tools online and other products produced by Ingersoll Rand at www.ingersollrandproducts.com.

Mingus to Debut at Talladega

Mason Mingus, who is in the middle of his first full-time ARCA season, will make his Camping World Truck Series debut later this month at Talladega Superspeedway. Teaming up with Win-Tron Racing, Mingus will pilot the No. 35 Call 811 Before You Dig / Mark-It! Madness Chevrolet Silverado.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to make my NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut at Talladega. We've been working hard to make this opportunity possible, and for it to now become a reality is really a dream come true. It's very humbling, for sure," Mingus said. "I have a great deal of respect for not only the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series but also for the chance to compete in one of NASCAR's top series. The race won't be easy. Talladega will be filled with a lot of great drivers and teams who strive for perfection. We've set our goals to go there, qualify for the race and finish all 94 laps. If we can do that and without a doubt, I feel we can, the weekend will be success no matter where we finish."

In 33 ARCA starts, Mingus has scored five top 5s and 24 top 10s, including career best second-place runs at Talladega Superspeedway, Berlin Raceway, and Iowa Speedway.

Brian Scott To Make 200th NASCAR Start

Saturday afternoon's Kansas Lottery 300 will mark Brian Scott's 200th career start in NASCAR. The driver of the No. 2 Fast Fixin' Chevrolet Camaro made his Truck Series debut with Xpress Motorsports at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2007. Since his debut, Scott has posted two Truck Series victories (Dover and Phoenix), 11 top 5s and 23 top 10s in 62 starts. The 25-year-old then moved to the Nationwide Series full-time, where he's posted eight top 5s and 35 top 10s in 137 starts.

They Said It:

"Kansas has a fairly new resurfacing job that they did recently and it's a really nice paving job. It's really smooth. It's a little bit tricky because the tire we run to withstand the speed we have on that new pavement has pretty good grip, but it is so hard that if it starts to slide, it's hard to recover from once it starts sliding. So, it's a little bit tricky. But, you know, it's pretty uneventful. Right now, the groove is two cars wide and the more we race on it, the more the upper lane may come in. I'm hoping that it will come in more this time than last time and each time we race there, it will open up a little bit." Mark Martin

"No question, we need to turn things around. It's not too late but we can't have the performances we had the past two weeks. We need to get it together in Kansas. The Kansas track is very smooth and it's fast, so you can be aggressive with shock control, sway bars and other things. Kansas is definitely its own animal. It compares more to a Michigan and the smoother race tracks that we run on versus the rough ones like Chicago and Atlanta." Kurt Busch

Keepin' It Short: Big Weekend On The Dirt And The Pavement
by Mike Neff

You know how much we love talking about the big races. This weekend is another one of those weekends where the best will make a pilgrimage in order to test their skills against the rest. The Late Model universe will be centered in Martinsville, Virginia when the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300 is contested on the historic half-mile. While the Late Models will be trading paint at Martinsville, the UMP DirtCar Modifieds will be running last night, tonight and Saturday. They'll be joined on Saturday for a twin feature at Eldora Speedway to see who is the best in the UMP world.

The Late Model race at Martinsville is an institution. It has undergone a few different name changes, from the Taco Bell 300 to the Bailey's 300 and now the Virginia is for Racing Lovers 300. Up until a couple of years ago, it was one of the few races at Martinsville where you could win the historic grandfather clock. They used to only award the clock for winners of feature races run on Sunday; Nationwide and Truck drivers could only win a clock by coming and running with these Late Model veterans. Dennis Setzer has one of those clocks and he won it in a Late Model, not in a truck. The same goes for Timothy Peters. He won a clock in 2005, driving a Late Model, before he became known as a short track stud in the Truck Series. Philip Morris, the four-time national champion has won this race three times, including last year's contest. Had it not been for a fuel pickup issue in 2011, Morris very well could be the three-time defending champion because the car he had that year was the strongest most observers had ever seen at the paper clip racetrack in the hills of southern Virginia.

The field for Sunday's race will be set by four heat races and a last chance race. The feature will run for 200 laps, with a break at the midway point. When the checkered flag falls, there will be a ton of torn up race cars, some ruffled feathers and some extremely happy team members of the driver who is standing next to the clock in Victory Lane.

Meanwhile, on Saturday night, after the qualifying is wrapped up in Martinsville, the UMP Modifieds and Late Models will be dueling it out in Rossburg, OH. 100 Modifieds are pre-entered, set to race on Thursday and Friday as they set up their alphabet soup of heats on Saturday, ultimately setting the field for the feature race that will crown the winner of the UMP Modified Nationals. Devin Gilpin rolls into Eldora as the national points leader, but Nick Allen is hot on his heels in third and at the top of the pre-entry list in his 21A Modified. Nick Hoffman, who won the Nationals last year will also be back to defend the title, driving his own Elite chassis.

The alphabet soup of heat races will run all night long and the racing will be outstanding. Modified racing is becoming the premier form of dirt competition around the country because it is so economical and yet, the racing is intense. Saturday night's feature will showcase the best in the open-wheel modified ranks and will be more than worth the price of admission.

While the Modifieds will run from Thursday through Saturday, the UMP Late Models will join in just for Saturday night. Brandon Sheppard has been the best of the Late Model ranks this season, leading the point standings over Bobby Pierce and Rusty Schlenk. Sheppard will be looking to add an Eldora trophy to his 2013 accumulation that has been as impressive as any year.

So if you're in Ohio this weekend, head to Rossburg and watch the best in the business mixing it up on the high banks of one of the most famous dirt tracks in the world as the UMP stars show everyone in attendance, and watching online, what dirt racing is all about.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: The 2004 Banquet 400 is best known for the race for victory between Joe Nemechek and Ricky Rudd (both non-Chasers).  For Chaser Ryan Newman, he ran well during the race, but his day ended early.  What happened?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: During the race weekend at Kansas Speedway in 2002, there were two big stories.  One was the neck injury that ended Sterling Marlin's season.  The other was a shocking admission that Dale Earnhardt, Jr. made, and NASCAR's response to it.  What was it?

A: During the week leading up to the race, Earnhardt Jr. admitted that he suffered a fairly serious head injury in a crash at then-California Speedway five months earlier.  Instead of reporting it (and potentially missing races) Earnhardt Jr. chose to hide it.  The results do, in fact show a swoon after that California wreck.  It was the first of four consecutive finishes in the 30s for the No. 8 team.

NASCAR's reaction was to institute a new rule. All drivers in crashes would be evaluated by doctors in the Infield Care Center, and by doctors affiliated with NASCAR starting with the Protection One 400 at Kansas.  Here's a clip of pre-race coverage from Kansas narrated by Bill Weber about the situation.
