Re: Stereo daguerreotype

What a great daguereotype good to know that there is still wonderful images still being discovered.  May I suggest that you consult Stefan Richters book The Art of the Daguerreotype where there are a number of single and stereo Daguerreotypes in this vein. There is a real probability that the image is French, approximately 1855 the young woman would be termed an opera dancer often a euphemism for a prostitute or mistress. At that time France had a reputation as the sex capital of Europe and pornagraphic and semi pornagraphic images were readily available. Pornagraphic images were illigal but suggestive images proliferated. One particular image in Stephan's book shows a young woman with a dress with similar skirt and hand colouring ,page 72. Another with a similar platted/braided hairstyle, page 8. Claudet  intoduce the hand colouring to daguereotypes and in this example it's as good as it gets.  Its worth a look in French publications or French collections but it is unlikely that you will find out who the young woman is but might find the photographer. Please pass on any information that is forthcoming. Hope this is helpful. Angela Moor Conservation Administrator The Centre for Photographic Conservation London

Subject: Stereo daguerreotype

Just found an anonymous stereo daguerreotype,

Any idea who the photographer could be?

Many thanks in advance,
