Chase Clinch Scenarios
Following Sunday night's race from Atlanta Motor Speedway, six drivers -- Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer, Kevin Harvick, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch and Matt Kenseth -- had locked themselves into this year's Chase for the Championship. Kasey Kahne is guaranteed to snag at least one of the "wild card" spots should he fail to make it back inside the top 10.
Four drivers control their own fate on Saturday night, not needing to depend on someone else's misfortune to join the Chase field:
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (7th) - Clinches a top-10 spot with a finish of 32nd or better, 33rd with at least one lap led or 34th with most laps led
Joey Logano (8th) - Clinches a top-10 spot with a finish of 11th or better, 12 with at least one lap led or 13th with most laps led
Greg Biffle (9th) - Clinches a top-10 spot with a finish of ninth or better, 10th with at least one lap led or 11th with the most laps led
Kurt Busch (10th) - Clinches a top-10 spot with a win, second with at least one lap led or third with the most laps led
Three drivers can clinch a "wild card" slot with a win at Richmond this weekend but are still mathematically eligible to race their way into the top 10:
Jeff Gordon (-6)
Martin Truex, Jr. (-10) - currently holds the second "wild card" slot
Ryan Newman (-20) - Can clinch a "wild card" slot without a win (Logano and Biffle must remain in the top 10 or be replaced by Kahne; Newman must out-point Truex by six; Gordon must not win; and Brad Keselowski or Jamie McMurray cannot win and overtake Newman)
From there, the clinch scenarios get much more complicated, leaving drivers like Brad Keselowski, Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard with small chances to get into the Chase, depending on whether they can capitalize on a mistake by another driver ahead of them.
Nationwide Series Celebrates 1,000th Race
When the green flag drops over tonight's Virginia 529 College Savings 250 at Richmond, the Nationwide Series will celebrate its 1,000th race. 31 years ago, Dale Earnhardt took the victory in the inaugural series race at Daytona in 1982. Since then, there have been 136 race winners and 23 champions crowned.
"The NASCAR Nationwide Series always has been a perfect blend of young and veteran drivers, providing some of the most compelling and entertaining racing in motorsports," NASCAR President Mike Helton said of the milestone. "We are very pleased with the progress the series has made over the last 32 years and continues to make in terms of competition, technology and providing a truly memorable experience for its legions of fans."
With 999 races under its belt, the Nationwide Series continues to draw admirable crowds and big names from the Sprint Cup Series each and every week.
Labonte Not Racing Richmond
Just a week after a bicycling accident that broke three ribs, Bobby Labonte is once again sitting out as he heals. AJ Allmendinger, who has piloted the No. 47 JTG Daugherty Toyota in a handful of races this season, will be behind the wheel in his place.
"I am feeling a lot better, but I don't want to put the race team in any compromising position this weekend," Labonte said in a team release. "It just makes more sense to focus on my rehab one more week to ensure that I'm ready to go at Chicago with no issues. I plan to be back with the team then and back behind the wheel."
Allmendinger has two top-10 finishes in 12 starts at Richmond.

Hornaday To Set Truck Series Start Record
When the green flag drops over Iowa Speedway on Sunday afternoon, Ron Hornaday, Jr. will make his 337th career start, passing the 336 mark that he currently shares with Rick Crawford. It was 18 years ago when Hornaday's career began as he started on the pole for the 1995 Skoal Bandit Copper World Classic at Phoenix. From there, the driver of the No. 9 Chevrolet has grabbed records in several different categories with four championships, 51 wins, 151 top 5s, 221 top 10s and seven straight years of grabbing at least one pole position.
Country Singer Gretchen Wilson Joins ESPN Chase Coverage
Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter Gretchen Wilson will narrate and appear in the opening teasers for the ESPN telecasts of the 10 Chase races. Wilson's appearances will begin next weekend at Chicagoland Speedway. Wilson, who grew up around racing said she was honored to be a part of ESPN's coverage.
"I can't tell you how excited I am to be associated with NASCAR and ESPN as we begin the Chase. Many of the fans who show up at our concerts on Saturday nights are watching the races on Sundays," Wilson said. "I've been a racing fan ever since my uncle ran dirt tracks outside St. Louis when I was a kid. He would let me clean the mud out of the wheel wells with a 2x4, and I thought I was part of the pit crew. This has already been an exciting season, and I think it's about to get crazy."
Nine of the ten races in the Chase will air on ESPN, with the only exception coming at Charlotte in November. The Saturday night race will air on ABC.

They Said It:
"I love going to Richmond. It's a great racetrack and I wish we had a bunch more just like it around the country. It's a fun track for us to race and I've won there. If I had one track to pick to try and get bonus points before the Chase this would be it. I've won here before, including at this race last year, so we are pretty confident going in and we are going to throw everything we have at it so we can get some bonus points. That said, you just never know what's going to happen. Last year we got wrecked and thought our day was done, but it actually put us in a better position we won the thing." Clint Bowyer
"Richmond is one of my favorite tracks. I've had some really good runs there in the past. It's all about getting good forward drive so you can get on the throttle and get underneath other cars. Usually we have a couple of long runs, and even a green-flag pit stop is not unheard of. If you can really work on your rear tires, getting them to grip under power, especially off Turn 4, where you're still trying to turn and you're under throttle, it can be a fun race. It's one of the more exciting races because a lot of guys are racing for that final Chase spot. So there will definitely be some excitement." David Ragan
"Richmond (International Raceway) is a three-quarter mile short track that is uniquely shaped. It races like a track much bigger than that, so as a driver, I've got to approach the track differently. It is shaped like a 'D,' and there is a really big arch going into turn one, but you carry a lot of speed into turn one, you get hard on the brakes and then the groove opens up as you exit turn two and you can run where your car wants to run. You don't have to stick to the bottom of the race track; you can run the middle and three-quarters of the way up the track. Turn three is almost like a Martinsville (Speedway) turn. It has a really sharp entrance and it's not very open. On exit, it opens back up with the 'D' shape. We had a decent finish earlier this year at Richmond and we are hoping to build on that this weekend. We've had a top-10 streak going the past two weeks, and we are hoping to keep that alive on Saturday night." Paul Menard

Keepin' It Short: Conquering The World
by Mike Neff
Late-season races are often the biggest purses and the biggest fields. When it comes to Dirt Super Late Models, the biggest and best is the World 100 at Eldora Speedway. The Dream is held in early Summer and is a big payday, but it doesn't have the prestige of the World 100. This will be the 43rd running of the World 100. 26 drivers have taken home the trophy from the World and the progressively growing purse. When the World 100 was run in 1971, the winner took home $4,000. Every year since then the winner's share has increased by $1,000. This year the first driver to cross the finish line will cash a check for $46,000.
Billy Moyer has won the World 100 six times. He is the all-time winningest driver in the event, scoring his first win in 1991 and his sixth in 2010. Donnie Moran is the next closest driver with four victories. Larry Moore, Jeff Purvis and Scott Bloomquist have each won the race three times. Jimmy Owens and Brian Birkhofer are the only other drivers who have scored multiple wins, with two each.
The total prize fund for Saturday's race is $283,910 and will be spread over a larger field than in previous years, with 32 cars taking the green flag. Thursday and Friday nights will be complete race cards with time trials, heat races, B-features and twin A-features. The main events will pay $5,000 on both of the preliminary nights. A driver's best qualifying effort from those two nights will then be used to establish the line-up for Saturday's time-honored format of six heat races, two B-Features and B-Scrambles setting up the newly enlarged 32-car starting field for the fabled World 100. Every driver who takes the green flag will win at least $2,000.
Whelen All-American National Championship Points Battle
810 points is a perfect season in the Whelen All-American Series. 18 maximum point races, at 45 points per race, gives a driver the perfect score. Whelen All-American rules state that, should more than one driver reach the magic 810 point mark during a season, the first driver to hit the total will be crowned champion. After a very successful week of racing, Lee Pulliam is just two points shy of achieving the highest point total possible in local short track racing under the NASCAR sanction. Pulliam ran four races this week, winning three of them and adding 16 points to his season total and setting him on the doorstep of the perfect score. Deac McCaskill ran two races but only managed one top 10 finish. The end result is McCaskill is 42 points behind the defending champion and playing out the string at this point. Keith Rocco and Ryan Preece are battling it out behind McCaskill and Pulliam. The two of them not only are seeing who can be number one in the Northeast but they also could end up in second place. Rocco won one of the three races he ran this week while Preece scored two wins. In the end the two modified drivers are 11 points apart. CE Falk III ran two races and scored a win to add 11 points to his total, allowing him to leapfrog Tommy Lemons Jr and stay one point ahead of Craig Van Dohren.
Lemons scored two top 5 finishes in the two races he ran, but fell two spots, two points behind Falk and one point behind Van Dohren.Chad Finchum and Burt Myers are still in ninth and tenth, but Peyton Sellers is now tied with Myers for the final spot in the top 10.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: The 1999 Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 at Richmond is best known as the event in which Tony Stewart picked up his first Winston Cup victory. For past Richmond winner Terry Labonte, though it was a night he'd rather forget. What happened?

Thursday's Answer:
Q: Even though Dale Earnhardt finished eighth in points and finally won the Daytona 500, 1998 was generally a forgettable year for him. The Exide NASCAR Select Batteries 400 was just one example of a miserable night. What happened?
A: In front of Earnhardt, Robert Pressley appeared to blow a right front tire exiting Turn 2 and went hard into the outside wall. Joe Nemechek was right behind Pressley and ran into him. Earnhardt did likewise. The crash can be seen here. All three cars were significantly beaten up in the crash. Pressley was out on the spot and finished last. Both Nemechek and Earnhardt spent significant time behind the wall, but came back out to finish the race. They were classified 37th and 38th, respectively. Nemechek was 107 laps down, while Earnhardt, who stopped on track and drew another caution later in the race, was 140 laps behind.
