Wile Named Darlington Raceway President

The International Speedway Corporation (ISC) announced Thursday that Chip Wile will be the new president of Darlington Raceway, effective immediately.

Wile replaces outgoing president Chris Browning, who resigned to pursue other career opportunities. Browning had served as Darlington's president since 2004, Wile will make the transition from his job at Motor Racing Network (MRN) as director of business development, a position he has held since 2012.

This marks the first time an MRN employee has been hired to oversee an ISC track, a fact not lost on Motor Racing Network president David Hyatt. "It makes me proud of the people we have here,'' Hyatt said. "It shows they are being recognized, and we do a great job for the company as a whole.''

ISC president John Saunders shared Hyatt's excitement of the announcement. "We are excited to announce Chip Wile as president of Darlington Raceway," Saunders said. "He is a respected and seasoned motorsports executive and is well prepared to accept the leadership position at Darlington Raceway. We were fortunate to have such a high-caliber individual to transition into a strategic position within our organization. We congratulate Chip on his new position and look forward to his continued success within our organization."

Wile said he is looking forward to learning from those at the track in his new position. Darlington Raceway has hosted a Sprint Cup race every year since 1950. The track hosts a NASCAR Nationwide Series race and the historic Southern 500 every year on Mother's Day weekend.

One of the most famous track presidents in the track's rich history was the late Jim Hunter. Wile says Hunter's impact is still felt today.

"When I was early on in my career, I'd go to Jim and ask him for advice, knowing that he would give you sound advice,'' Wile said. "I really appreciated the things Jim has done, not only for me but for our sport.

"If I can do half the job that Jim Hunter did, then I would feel like I would be successful.''

Ben Leslie Named Go Green Crew Chief

Ben Leslie's name resonates through NASCAR circles as a formidable crew chief, one who at the top of his game found success with multiple Roush Fenway Racing teams.

Now, Leslie has his newest challenge: crew chief for Go Green Racing.

The Nationwide Series team, which operates the No. 79 full time, announced Thursday that Leslie would begin leading its efforts starting at this weekend's Food City 250 at Bristol Motor Speedway.

The team has Kyle Fowler entered at Bristol at Atlanta, while Jeffrey Earnhardt will pilot the car at Richmond and Kentucky. Maryeve Dufault will drive at Chicagoland.

Leslie was most recently a part of the joint Cup Series partnership between Go Green and Brian Keselowski Motorsports, fielding the No. 52.

The longtime crew chief has sat atop the pit box for a plethora of drivers, including Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth and Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

MWR Crew Member Suspended

NASCAR announced earlier this week that Eric Maycroft, a crew member for Michael Waltrip Racing's No. 56 team, had been indefinitely suspended for violating the sport's substance abuse policy. Maycroft was found in violation of Sections 12-2 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 19 (violation of the NASCAR Substance Abuse Policy) of the sanctioning body's rule book.

"Michael Waltrip Racing full supports NASCAR's substance abuse policies and those who complete the Rod to Recovery program," a statement issued by the team said. "MWR's zero tolerance policy has resulted in the immediate termination of the employee."

Maycroft joined Martin Truex, Jr.'s team in mid 2011.

Chase Elliott to Replace James Buescher?

During a practice session at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday, Fox Sports 1 reporter Ray Dunlap reported that James Buescher will be leaving the No. 31 Chevrolet to run in the Nationwide Series in 2014, something that was rumored leading into the 2013 season as well. Dunlap also reported that 17-year-old Chase Elliott, who sat on the pole for Wednesday night's UNOH 200, is the leading candidate to fill that role. Turner Scott Motorsports has not commented on the rumors. Elliott has five Truck Series starts this season and has finished no worse than sixth.

They Said It:

"I've liked Bristol since I went there the first time. I remember when I set foot onto that track, it was the day before, it was load-in day and I looked out there and you're standing on the straightaway, but it sure seems like a corner. It's a very cool track and a spectacle for the fans. I feel like that is always the one that everyone says, 'I want to come see the Bristol night race.' I feel like the attendance lately has been great, the coverage has been great for NASCAR, and I think we'll get a lot of people out there." Danica Patrick

"The first Bristol race is early in the season, it's during the day and it's cooler.  Then we go back in the middle of the summer and it's hot and nighttime, so the cars always look faster — you see the sparks flying and all that.  It's a really cool atmosphere I think for a race fan as well as for the teams and drivers as well.  The track of course, the way Bristol's shaped and being later in the year, everybody's patience is a little thinner.  It seems like the racing is more intense for the night race, and Bristol leads to close racing, frustration, and all that kind of stuff that's fun to watch." Matt Kenseth

"Bristol at nights is always a fun race.  I think everyone who has raced under the lights on a Saturday night gets a charge out of going to a track like this.  We have had some good runs at Bristol, including a top-10 finish there in the spring earlier this year.  I hope that we can put together a good run this weekend in our McDonald's Chevy.  This is obviously a track where things can happen really fast so we just need to focus on the things that we can control and go out and execute." Jamie McMurray

Keepin' It Short: Labor Day Excitement
by Mike Neff

Allow me to start this week's column by saying this: I am the announcer at Millbridge Speedway for the Mini Outlaw Series and will be announcing North Carolina Race Week at the Iredell County Fairgrounds and Millbridge. With that said, this coming Labor Day week is going to be one of the biggest anywhere for the growing sport of Mini Outlaw Racing. Over three nights of racing, the winners of the three races will walk away with $5,000. The starting fields in the races will include karts from California, Montana, Texas, Pennsylvania and the Carolinas.

Racing activity will start on Labor Day with a warm-up night of lawn mower racing on the dirt track at the Iredell County Fairgrounds. The track is a 1/5th mile dirt oval that has been resurrected over the last four years by the Mini Outlaw Series. Four years ago the first East Coast Nationals was held at the Fairgrounds, and every year since the event has grown bigger and bigger. Wednesday night will be the 4th Annual East Coast Nationals. The race should have a field of at least 40 Mini Outlaw Sprint Karts in the main feature along with double digit car counts in the Beginner Box Stock, Box Stock and 125/250 classes. The winning driver in the feature race will take home $1,500.

On Friday night (Sept. 6), the Mini Outlaws will travel down the road to Millbridge Speedway and race for a $2,500 winner's check. Millbridge has been the home of the Mini Outlaws for the last three years and continues to draw bigger crowds and more racers who have realized they can have a lot of fun racing Mini Outlaw Sprint Karts for less money than most any other form of racing. On the same night, at the Fairgrounds will be a good ol' fashioned demolition derby. Cars will hit each other repeatedly until only one is able to roll.

Finally, finishing up North Carolina Race Week will be a $1,000 to win Mini Outlaw Race back at the Fairgrounds. Most of the drivers who will have come to down to run the Nationals will stick around to take a shot at the other two races so there should still be a very good field of talented drivers from across the country. They will be wielding machines that have the same power to weight ratio as a full sized Outlaw Sprint Car, but in a smaller package.

Admission to the fair is $5 and you can get into the pits for $10. Bring the kids along and they very well could get the racing bug. For an incredibly economical price, you can see some of the best local short track racing and some of the future stars of NASCAR.

Whelen All-American National Points Battle

Lee Pulliam was ready to put a stranglehold on the National Championship on Saturday when Mother Nature threw the red flag on his plans. Pulliam won the first of twin 75-lap feature races at South Boston Speedway but, as he stood in victory lane, the rain drops began to fall and the remainder of the card was a washout. Fortunately for Pulliam, they were able to get the first feature in. The majority of the other racing cards in the Southeast were a complete rainout, so Pulliam managed to put a little bit more distance between himself and Deac McCaskill in second place. Pulliam now has a 792 point total for the year, just 18 away from a perfect score. Keith Rocco is in third place. He ran three races this past week, winning one and adding 11 points to his total. That allowed him to gain four points on Pulliam but, at this point, the title is pretty much out of Rocco's reach. Ryan Preece ran four races and scored another win to hang onto the fourth spot in points while Chad Finchum scored a win in one of the two races he ran, jumping himself to fifth in the points.

Tommy Lemons and CE Falk were washed out for the week while Craig Von Dohren scored a top 5 that allowed him to jump over Burt Myers for eighth in the point standings. Myers didn't run again this week, which dropped him to 9th while Zeke Shell makes an appearance in the top 10 for the first time this season. The race for the title is hitting the front stretch and Pulliam has a healthy lead as the pack heads for home.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: At the 1993 Food City 250, Robert Pressley had a pretty good race weekend, for the most part.  He qualified third and led 42 laps in the race.  However, the finish was not what he desired.  What happened?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: In the same Busch race referenced in Monday's question, Jeff Gordon was one of the dominant drivers early on.  However, in a race in which only 14 of the 29 starters finished, Gordon wasn't one of those lucky 14.  What happened?

A:
Gordon was running third, but having mechanical issues when he hit the wall hard exiting Turn 2.  Gordon's Baby Ruth Ford slid down the track and then hit the inside wall before coming to rest.  Just before the crash, ESPN's Benny Parsons (working as a pit reporter) had reported that Gordon might have had a broken shock.  The crash (and Parsons' report) can be seen here.

Gordon was out on the spot and finished 19th after leading 120 laps.
