JGR Partners With Pit Crew U
Joe Gibbs Racing announced Thursday that they've partnered with Pit Crew U on a pit crew development program for the organization. The program's intent is to work with Pit Crew U to identify ten strong athletes to form a development squad with the intent of using those individuals to fill any openings in the organization's Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series.
"It certainly is no secret how important pit crews have become in our sport especially with track position playing such a vital role in each race," said J.D. Gibbs, President of JGR. "We've always believed in developing our own talent through our driver program and our Nationwide Series program, which has seen many team members, including crew chiefs, make the step to the Sprint Cup Series. We're excited to partner with Pit Crew U now to make sure we have a consistent flow of over the wall talent coming to JGR in the years to come."
According to their website, Pit Crew U is an "education division of Performance Instruction & Training designed to teach the specific skills associated with a career as an over-the-wall pit crew team member in stock car motorsports."
Nationwide Series Preparing for Debut at Mid-Ohio
The Nationwide Series began its preparations Thursday Morning for Saturday's inaugural Nationwide Children's Hospital 200 at the historic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio. There were two test sessions run Thursday to give drivers more track time for Saturday's race.
Michael McDowell paced the early session in his No. 18 Toyota Camry, posting a lap of 85.699 seconds at 94.853 mph. Sam Hornish, Jr. led the way for the Nationwide regulars by posting a lap of 85.855 seconds at 94.681 mph. Max Papis, Owen Kelly, Nelson Piquet Jr., AJ Allmendinger, Marcos Ambrose, Brian Vickers, Parker Kligerman, and Elliott Sadler rounded out the top 10.
AJ Allmendinger led the way in the second session by posting a lap of 85.074 seconds at 95.550 mph. Kligerman, Kelly, McDowell, Hornish Jr., Piquet Jr., Larson, Fellows, Ambrose, and Vickers would rounded out the top 10 in the second session.
The Nationwide Series hits the track again at the 2.4-mile circuit for two more practices Friday, starting at 11:00 AM ET. Group qualifying gets underway on Saturday at 9:30 AM ET, culminating with the green flag for the 90-lap event at 2:49 PM ET on ESPN 2.
News 'N' Notes
- Tim George, Jr. will be out of the No. 5 Wauters Motorsports Chevrolet for the next three Camping World Truck series races. The organization did not mention why George would be sitting out those races; however, sponsorship has been a difficulty for them throughout their tenure in NASCAR. Wauters Motorsports is not traveling to Michigan this weekend, and they have not yet announced a driver for Bristol or the series debut at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. George, Jr. hopes to return to the organization later this season.
- A pair of Richard Childress Racing drivers will have longtime sponsors on their cars once again this weekend. General Mills' Cheerios returns to Jeff Burton's No. 31 Chevrolet this weekend at Michigan. The company has been a sponsor in NASCAR for 15 years and joined RCR in 2008. Additionally, Rheem will make its sixth of seven scheduled appearances on Kevin Harvick's No. 29 Chevrolet this weekend. The seventh and final race is scheduled for Talladega in October.

Bobby Dale Earnhardt Arrested for DUI
Bobby Dale Earnhardt was arrested earlier this week on suspicion of DUI. According a report from TMZ, Earnhardt was pulled over by an officer after making a wide turn, and the officer found his eyes glossy and speech slurred. According to the complaint filed by the arresting officer, Earnhardt's blood alcohol level was at 0.193, more than double the legal limit of 0.08. Earnhardt released a statement on his Facebook page in response to the incident.
"I wanted to let you all know I made a terrible mistake last night drinking and driving, and I am thankful nothing bad happened from my stupidity and I know it could have," he said. "I'm sorry for letting all my fans, friends and family down, and I hope I can make it up to each and every on of you and in the future be a good role model. I will continue to move forward with my racing career, and I hope I continue to have your support. Thanks."
The 25-year-old son of Kerry Earnhardt moved to Charleston, West Virginia recently in hopes of gaining more driving experience. According to his website, Earnhardt plans to run the 2013 ARCA Truck Series schedule.
Sauter Hopes to Run First Cup Race Since 2011
When the Sprint Cup Series takes to Michigan International Speedway this afternoon for qualifying, Johnny Sauter hopes to lay down a lap fast enough to qualify for his first Cup Series race since 2011. Sauter will pilot the No. 98 Toyota fielded by Phil Parsons Racing with support from Truck Series co-owner Mike Curb.
"This new car looks like it's fun to drive and they've been extremely fast everywhere they've gone so far this season," Sauter said. "So I'm just looking forward to sitting behind the wheel of one. It's been a year or two since I've driven a Cup car and they just have so much horsepower and they're so much fun to drive that I'm excited about doing it.
"It's going to be hard to get into the race, but all I can do is drive as hard as I possibly can, cross my fingers and hope they've got it handling good and that I can give the right feedback and do a good job for them," he continued. "They've proven that their stuff is good and they've run good all year, qualifying 25th to 35th, which to some people doesn't seem like anything but to me, (Sprint Cup) is a tough nut to crack so I hope I can keep up the trend of what they've been doing."
Sauter has 81 career Sprint Cup Series starts and just three top-10 finishes. With 44 drivers on the entry list, Sauter will need to qualify on speed to make the field.

They Said It:
"Regardless of new pavement or not, it's wide-open racing and you can run from top to bottom. The biggest thing used to be to find grip there. But with the new surface, there is a ton of grip now. Before, you had grip for maybe five laps and then you'd just be out to lunch. But now, the tire wear is all out the window and the racetrack is going to be very fast. And the wide racetrack is good. That's what makes Michigan so exciting and so fun. That's the biggest deal about it. For me, coming to Michigan, I tend to run well there. For whatever reason, I haven't had too many great finishes to show for it until two years ago, and then we had a great year there and got our first win that August." Kyle Busch
"We ran well at Michigan earlier this season. We were a top-10 car but were in the wrong place at the wrong time and hit some debris from an accident in front of us. All season, we have shown speed at the intermediate tracks, and this weekend shouldn't be any different. We started fifth here in June, so I expect to see that same speed. We're still kinda 'chasing' that wild card spot for The Chase, and each weekend is more important now. There aren't that many more opportunities, and we probably need to get a least two wins. Michigan is a good place for that to happen, since we have proved to run so strong there." Aric Almirola
"Michigan is the fastest track we go to since they repaved it last year. We are averaging close to 200 mph, which hands down makes it one of the fastest places we race. It's a challenging track, because the tires that we run there are hard and the track has a lot of grip. You're always on kind of a knife's edge through the corners because the groove is very narrow right now. The more we run at Michigan the wider the groove will get, and we will be able to do more passing. We had a pretty good car in the June race, and I'm sure 'Slugger' and the guys will have another fast NIBCO/Menards Chevrolet prepared for this weekend." Paul Menard

Keepin' It Short: Going Topless For $40,000
by Mike Neff
There are a lot of different styles of race cars in the world. Dirt Super Late Models are one of the most popular cars on local short tracks. Lucas Oil is one of the biggest sanctioning bodies in Super Late Model Racing. This week they are sanctioning a unique race at Batesville Motor Speedway, the Comp Cams Topless 100. The cars will still have a roll cage to keep the drivers safe, but the roofs of the cars will be removed. That one feature will allow the fans to see down into the cars at just how hard the drivers have to work to make the cars go so quickly around the track.
Making it into the feature race on Saturday night will guarantee a racer a $2,000 pay day. The winner of the race will take home $40,000 and the whole field will share $130,000. The event has been held for 20 years and 13 drivers have been to victory lane. Jimmy Mars has won the race twice, in 2000 and 2007. He is one of three drivers to have won the race more than once. The other two are Billy Moyer and Scott Bloomquist, who have both won the race four times.
The last five years, the race has averaged 61 entrants. Drivers come from across the country to battle the strongest local talent along with the touring stars of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. Last year it was Steve Francis who added the crown jewel race to his star studded resume. There has not been a repeat winner in the last five years and no one knows who'll head to victory lane this Saturday night. If you're in the Batesville Arkansas area this weekend, head to Batesville Motor Speedway, pay the $20 - $30 for a seat for yourself, take a kid between 6 and 11 for an extra $5 and see the best Super Late Model racers in the country go topless.
Battle for the Whelen All-American National Championship
It is one month until the end of the National Championship point scoring period and Lee Pulliam continues to lead the standings, pulling ahead another seven points this week. Pulliam ran two races, scoring one win. Deac McCaskill also ran two races scoring one top five but not increasing his point total. Keith Rocco held onto his third place position running one race, winning and adding nine points to his season total. Ryan Preece also found his way to victory lane last week in the one race he ran, increasing his total points by 11. Tommy Lemons Jr. did not increase his point total this week but did have a top 5 finish in one of his two races.
In the second half of the top 10, CE Falk, III ran two races and scored two top 5 finishes but did not add to his total for the year. Chad Finchum's top 5 allowed him to increase his point total by 15 points and jump over Burt Myers to seventh in the point standings. The Myers brothers did not race which left their point totals as is, dropping each of them on spot to eighth and tenth respectively. Finally, Craig Von Dohren moved into the top 10 with his five wins and 605 total points for the season. Pulliam now sits 25 points from a perfect season.
