Stewart's Second Surgery a Success
Three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart underwent a successful second surgery on Thursday after suffering broken tibia and fibula in as American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) race at Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa,Iowa on Monday night. Stewart was leading the 30 lap feature at Oskaloosa on Monday when a lapped car spun in front of Stewart causing him to hit the car and flip. Stewart had a primary surgery on Tuesday to stabilize and clean the grade 2 injury.
According to a release from Stewart-Haas Racing, the second surgery was performed in North Carolina by a specialist who inserted a metal rod inside Stewart's tibia to put the bone back in its correct anatomical position. Stewart does remain in the hospital for observation and no discharge date has been given.
The injury suffered by Stewart will keep him out of his No. 14 Bass Pro Shops Chevrolet for an indefinite length of time and will end any chance of him making the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Stewart was 11th in points and held one of the two wild card positions by virtue of his win at Dover in June.
Veteran road racing star Max Papis will be behind the wheel of Stewart's No. 14 this weekend at Watkins Glen, however a replacement driver has not been named for any other upcoming races.
Stewart's consecutive race streak of 521 starts was third on the all time active list behind Jeff Gordon (710) and Jeff Burton (613).

Dover to Host Eighth Annual 9/11 Blood Drive
Dover International Speedway will host its Eighth Annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive on Wednesday, September 11th in the Diamond Room in the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino. The event began in 2006 and has expanded each year. This year, a yet-to-be-determined Chase driver will drop in at some point during the day to thank donors and discuss the upcoming Chase races. Additionally, interested donors will be offered a pace car ride around the speedway with track historian George Keller. Walk-in donors are welcome at the blood drive, however appointments (made by visiting www.DelmarvaBlood.org or calling 1-888-8-BLOOD-8) are strongly encouraged.
MIS Brings Back Wifi Hot Spots
In June, Michigan International Speedway provided Wifi hot spots for fans during the Quicken Loans 400 weekend, and on Monday, the facility announced they would once again be available during the Pure Michigan 400 weekend August 16 - 18. The hot spots can be found at the Budweiser Party Porch at turn four, Champion's Club presented by CP Federal Credit Union, Pit Patio, MISCamping.com APEX and MISCamping.com Turn 2 Retreat. Track president Roger Curtis said fans were a large reason the feature is returning.
"We had really good feedback on the free WiFi hot spots," Curtis said. "It gives everyone at the track a chance to stay updated and connected. We are happy to improve the technology for our fans to increase their enjoyment at the track."
The speedway has plans to research and install additional hot spots in the future. According to Curtis, the focus has been on the most popular areas fans congregate first. A map of the hot spot locations can be found here.

Frontstretch Folio: Cheez-It 355
by Beth Lunkenheimer
The Sprint Cup Series heads to Watkins Glen Sunday afternoon for the final road course visit on the 2013 schedule. The Cheez-It 355 is the 22nd race of the season and will be broadcast live on ESPN at 1:00 PM ET. The race can also be heard on your local MRN affiliate or SiriusXM Radio Channel 90. Drivers will compete for 90 laps (220.5 miles) en route to the checkered flag.
Records and Facts:
Juan Pablo Montoya holds the track qualifying record at Watkins Glen with a speed of 127.02 mph for the 2012 Finger Lakes 355 at the Glen. After starting on the pole, the driver of the No. 42 Chevrolet led just one lap and suffered a broken control arm that proved to be terminal. He was left to settle for a 33rd-place finish in his third of four DNFs last year.
Marcos Ambrose is the defending winner at Watkins Glen. In what turned out to be a controversial finish based on oil on the track that failed to bring out the caution, Ambrose took advantage of a late-race spin by Kyle Busch to lead the final lap of the race and take his second straight victory at The Glen by 0.571 seconds over Bobby Labonte. Jimmie Johnson, Clint Bowyer and Sam Hornish, Jr. rounded out the top 5.

They Said It:
"Obviously, I'm tremendously excited to be realizing a long held dream to have my name added to those that have started a NASCAR Sprint Cup race. I am realistic with where we are going to be. I want to finish on the lead lap and do a good job for the team. If we can generate a result out of that it will be fantastic. The NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship is getting down to an interesting point now and the boys will be battling hard – I don't want to be the guy that ruins someone else's Championship. There are some of the best racers anywhere in the world that I'll be racing against this weekend, so to be on the same track with them in the NASCAR Sprint Cup is a huge moment." Debuting Driver Owen Kelly
"You approach the two [road courses] differently. Sonoma is a 'finesse' track while Watkins Glen is a track that you have to attack and be aggressive. We used to head into road course events feeling confident we would gain points and have a shot at the win. With the competition so much stronger, it's a battle just to get a top 10 now. I expect it to be an exciting race, especially the restarts. Like we've seen recently on the road courses, the double-file restarts should be wild and crazy. The new Chevy SS has a lot of downforce and drag which helps you get into the braking zones, so I expect the lap times to be quicker here this weekend compared to years past. But the faster you're going, the more 'on edge' you are with the car and the tires." Jeff Gordon
"Watkins Glen is a fast road course that has been tough on me over the years. We actually used one of our NASCAR tests at Watkins Glen and I am glad we did. When we went there (Watkins Glen) we opened up Pandora's box with some braking issues and were able to master that by the end of the test. I feel confident heading back there – not to just have speed in qualifying but to have speed throughout the race. It's an important race in a critical juncture of the season." Kurt Busch

Keepin' It Short: Time For the Granddaddy Again
by Mike Neff
There are a few races during the year that require no explanation. You simply say the name and the rest is conjured up in the listener's head based on the lengthy history of the event. The Indianapolis 500, Monaco, the Daytona 500. Historic events that every racing fan, no matter how die hard or casual, know more about than most any other event on the calendar the entire year. When it comes to winged sprint cars, there is only one. The Knoxville Nationals. The black dirt in the center of Iowa, just a little Southeast of Des Moines, has been the Mecca for Sprint Car fans since the turn of last century. The first auto race held at the track was in 1901. The Nationals were first held at the track in 1961. They were called the 1st Annual Super-Modified National Championship. Since then the event has grown into a week long festival of activities highlighted by four nights of Outlaw Sprint Car racing.
For the third year in a row the Nationals will pay a million dollar purse. The last seven years have been the Donny Schatz show. He has taken the checkered flag and the big check in six of the last seven years. The king of the Outlaws, Steve Kinser, is of course the all-time winner in the Nationals as well. Kinser has notched 12 victories in his career on the Marion County Fairgrounds dirt.
Everything about Knoxville is bigger than other short tracks. The stands hold 24,172 people. The turn three and four end of the track is the home of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame. The track not only has restrooms, it has showers. It doesn't have a souvenir stand, it has a souvenir arcade. There is even closed circuit television in the stands and Hall of Fame. The most amazing thing is the 50/50 drawing during the main event. Someone will walk away with a five figure payday for a single ticket. Knoxville 50/50 drawings are epic.
If you ever have the chance to hit the Marion County Fairgrounds in Knoxville, Iowa during the beginning of August, you should check out the Knoxville Nationals. The best sprint car drivers in the world will make the trip to try and score the win in the most prestigious 410 Winged Sprint Car race in the world. You won't be disappointed.
Whelen All-American National Points Battle
The battle for the national championship played out head to head this past weekend. The top two combatants raced each other, and full fields, four times in two days at two race tracks in Virginia. Friday night the racing excitement was at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Virginia. Twin 125 lap races saw Pulliam win the first race while McCaskill won the second. The drivers finished runner-up to each other in the races that they did not win. Saturday night, it was off to South Boston for twin 75 laps races on the historic oval. Pulliam has owned SoBo over the past year and a half and this weekend was no exception. He took the win in both full field races to stretch out his lead and get him closer to the elusive perfect season. Pulliam now leads McCaskill by 25 points. Pulliam is 79 points ahead of third place Keith Rocco and appears to have made this a two horse race to the end. Ryan Preece lost seven points to Rocco this week but is still in fourth place in the points. Tommy Lemons, Jr. ran in the same four races that Pulliam and McCaskill competed in, but only managed to turn in two top-5 finishes which only gained him two points in the standings.
The Myers brothers are both in the top 10 again with Jason jumping over Ted Christopher and Todd Ceravolo this week. CE Falk didn't run this week but Myers lone top 5 in two races only allowed him to gain 26 points which still leaves him 29 points behind Falk. Chad Finchum didn't race this week and Ceravolo posted a top 5 that was worth 12 points in the standings. As the clock ticks down to the end of the season, this battle is going to be intense.
