Allmendinger Fastest in Cup Practice; Reutimann Claims Sparse Happy Hour
For the Sprint Cup Series, the opening practice session was the primary show. Most of the teams desired to simply get all of their work in during the first session and rest during the second.
In the afternoon, most of the teams focused on running in packs. AJ Allmendinger, driving the No. 51 Neil Bonnett Tribute Chevrolet for Phoenix Racing was fastest overall with a lap of 44.951 seconds (200.218 mph). Despite breaking the 200 mph barrier, Allmendinger was reportedly unhappy with his Chevrolet SS, claiming that it was uncomfortable to drive.
Clint Bowyer was the only other driver to break 200 mph in second. Carl Edwards was third, followed by Juan Pablo Montoya and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Brad Keselowski ran the most laps in the session with 33.
In Happy Hour, only 17 of the 43 entrants actually got onto the racetrack. The fastest driver was David Reutimann with a lap of 197.537 mph. Reutimann was followed by David Ragan, Marcos Ambrose, Jeff Gordon and Michael Waltrip.
Sweet Fastest in Opening Practice; Tandem Drafting the Name of the Game
In the opening Nationwide Series practice session, roughly half of the 42 cars entered this week participated in tandem drafts. A few more ran in regular drafts. The remaining 19 drivers chose to stick to single-car runs.
Of those who tandem drafted, Brad Sweet was fastest in his No. 5 Great Clips Chevrolet with a lap of 46.688 seconds (192.769 mph). Right behind him in the standings was JR Motorsports teammate Regan Smith, who was just one-thousandth of a second slower. Third and fourth were the duo of Parker Kligerman and Austin Dillon. Both drivers turned in identical laps of 47.117 seconds (191.014 mph). Trevor Bayne rounded out the top 5.
In the second session, only 21 of the 42 entrants ventured out onto the track. Kligerman was fastest in his Bandit Chippers Toyota, but with a lap of 48.913 seconds (184.000 mph). That lap was done with a push from Joe Nemechek. Robert Richardson, Jr. and Jason White were third and fourth quickest. Their fastest laps were accomplished in a traditional draft.
There were no incidents in the 55-minute practice session. However, there was one red flag due to debris.

31 Teams Found With Illegal Roof Spacers at Daytona
The Sprint Cup Series garage was put on high alert on Thursday afternoon when 16 teams were found with illegal roof flap spacers during inspection for this weekend's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway.
The illegal parts were confiscated by NASCAR and put on display for other teams to view shortly after inspection on Thursday. The cars in question were all three from Joe Gibbs Racing, all three from Michael Waltrip Racing, all three from Roush Fenway Racing, and two each from Penske Racing and Richard Petty Motorsports. Additionally, Jamie McMurray's No. 1 Chevrolet and Trevor Bayne's No. 21 Ford were also found in violation.
NASCAR Spokesman Kerry Tharp said the spacers "weren't in compliance with the kits that were provided by the manufacturers."
Meanwhile, over the in the Nationwide Series garage, 15 teams were also found with the illegal part. The drivers affected in the Nationwide Series are Matt Kenseth, Brian Vickers, Kyle Busch, Trevor Bayne, Travis Pastrana, Michael Annett, Mike Bliss, Cole Whitt, Robert Richardson, Blake Koch, Jason White, Landon Cassill, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Dexter Stacey and Reed Sorenson.
All teams were allowed to put the proper spacers on their cars before taking to the track for Thursday's practice sessions. No penalties were issued and likely won't be until at least Tuesday.
Terry Labonte Could Buy Phoenix Racing
It has been no secret that Phoenix Racing has been for sale for quite some time. There has been tons of speculation as to who would buy the single-car operation from James Finch.
Many believe that Harry Scott, Jr., co-owner of Turner Scott Motorsports is the odds-on favorite to purchase the team. But Thursday, another familiar name surfaced as a potential buyer. Two-time NSCS champion Terry Labonte, according to several sources has been linked to also trying to purchase James Finch's operation.
Bobby Labonte spoke of his brother's potential interest, at 56 of returning to the sport full-time as an owner.
"James been trying to sell that thing for a long time and Terry told me about it, I hope Terry can do it," Labonte said. "I think Terry would like to do it, but you've got to get money to feed the cow."
The sale of the team is expected to be announced around July 15th.

Annett Visits Animal Sanctuary
Earlier this week, Michael Annett visited Best Friends Animal Sanctuary to attend their "How to Start and Animal Sanctuary" workshop. In February, his girlfriend, Heidi Spillane, along with her mother, visited the facility and ended up leaving with a dog that Spillane adopted. Annett and his girlfriend dream to open a sanctuary in the Charlotte area.
"Coming to Best Friends is the best way for anybody who wants to learn about helping animals," Annett said. "The workshop was so beneficial. Best Friends is very successful and they want other people to be successful too. The founders of Best Friends share their mistakes, as well as their successes, and they want to make sure every step we take is in the right direction."
The Best Friends Animal Society runs the sanctuary Annett visited and is "a national animal welfare organization building no-kill programs and partnerships that will bring about a day when there are No More Homeless Pets®."

"We definitely had speed in all three of the Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolets when we unloaded at Daytona in February, there's no doubt about that. But, it doesn't mean that we'll be just as fast when we unload there this weekend. The other teams have likely done their homework to make their cars faster, just as we've done. I was really proud of the team's effort throughout Speedweeks in February, and I hope we'll be able to capitalize on what we accomplished in February, apply what we've learned about these cars since then, and have that same edge this weekend. As a driver, you have to put yourself in position, and this isn't different than any other racetrack. It just seems that you can get caught up in someone else's mistakes that much easier at Daytona." Ryan Newman
"I'm not sure you are going to see a whole lot different racing then you saw down there in January. I don't think you will see a pick up from visiting a track for the second time until we get to Pocono. Daytona is just Daytona. We are taking a new tire, which is a green version of what we had, so I don't think we have to worry about it throwing too many wrenches in the mix. It's just tough. I know everybody has made their cars better. I know we've made our cars better since January with trying to get drag down, but I think the overall race is probably going to be the same. I hope it slicks up a little bit. I think the race will be better if it's a little slicker – a little hotter, which it should be. I'm looking forward to it." Clint Bowyer

Keepin' It Short: Depending On The Weatherman For Racing Fortune
by Mike Neff
As the 4th of July week dawned on the racing world, fans in the Southeast were psyching up for the World Crown in Jefferson Georgia, PASS in Anderson South Carolina, South Boston's huge July 3rd race and the Carolina Clash's visit to Cherokee Speedway. But by Tuesday, all of the dates except South Boston were postponed. When 4:00 rolled around on Wednesday, the South Boston show was delayed as well. At least the South Boston officials waited until the day of the race; the PASS and World Crown races were called two or three days before the event. While there are some valid reasons, calling races that early in the week seems a bit premature.
The World Crown is a big race in the Super Late Model world and there are drivers who come from across the country to compete. The PASS Southern Series and the Carolina Clash are touring series that still see teams travel a decent distance to make it to some races. Calling events early certainly saves them the expense of driving many miles to have the race not happen; however, there comes a time when being proactive borders on paranoia. Weather prediction is a science that is still only somewhere around 80% accurate. There are fans who make travel plans, schedule vacation days and alter work schedules in order to attend some local races. Calling them off two or three days in advance, based on a predicted high probability of rain is just excessive.
While taking chances on weather predictions and tying the success of an event to a low potential for rain missing the track, there needs to be some loyalty to the schedule. If rain is in the forecast, there will certainly be fans who will stay away. There may even be some competitors who are coming from a long distance that will choose not to make the trip. That is a necessary evil that needs to be challenged in order to have the show go on. There are certainly exceptions, and if a track is wet with no sign of break in the rain in the foreseeable future, as there was at South Boston, then by all means call the race. But when you are multiple days away from race day, throwing in the towel is only going to cause people to lose faith in the track or series promoters and eventually result in them not bothering to show up for the race at all.
Whelen All-American National Championship
Deac McCaskill has been chasing Lee Pulliam all Spring on top of the standings. Pulliam started off the year hot, knocking out win after win, some of them heads up against McCaskill. He's been at the point in the title chase, winning 60% of the races that he's run. Now that we're at roughly the midway point of the year, the plot has thickened substantially. McCaskill notched two wins last week while Pulliam didn't take home a trophy. As a result, things are all tied up at the top of the heap. Pulliam and McCaskill both have 728 points. Right now, Pulliam leads because the first tie-breaker is total wins, but we have two months left with quite a few races on the docket for both of them to put more wins in the books. With McCaskill and Pulliam competing in the same race quite often, this could be a tremendous battle that fans can watch play out on the track if they make a trip to the Southeast this Summer.
On the heels of Pulliam and McCaskill is 2011 National Champion Keith Rocco, who is 96 points in arrears. Rocco may be able to reel in one of the two drivers ahead of him, but chasing down both of them is going to take some good fortune on Rocco's part and some misfortune on the part of both of the leaders. Tommy Lemons, Jr. is three points behind Rocco while C.E. Falk, III is holding down fifth, another 34 markers back. Ryan Preece, Anthony Anders, Chad Finchum, Burt Myers and Brandon Dean round out the top 10.
This weekend could be pivotal for the top two, provided the rainy weather in the South will hold off. South Boston's race from the 3rd was postponed to the 4th and looks to be going off. Caraway and Langley are hosting races on Friday while Southern National has twin features on Saturday. With four races for Pulliam and McCaskill, most likely all of them head-to-head, the points could see a big swing. Last year, Pulliam had a huge run this weekend and took home all of the money. We'll see who can make up the most ground this weekend.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: In 1987, Bobby Allison won the Pepsi Firecracker 400, passing Ken Schrader with less than two laps to go. However, there were a couple of notable people that didn't even realize that Allison had taken the lead. Who were those people?
Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!
Thursday's Answer:
Thursday's Answer:
Q: In 1995, ESPN held a special simulcast telecast of the Pepsi 400 from Daytona. How did these race simulcasts work?
A: Quite simple, actually. ESPN would air their regular race broadcast with Bob Jenkins, Benny Parsons and Ned Jarrett in the broadcast booth commentating. ESPN2 would air a broadcast featuring all in-car cameras, albeit with some commentary every now and then (especially around cautions), and on-screen graphics. Today, nearly all Sprint Cup races are some form of simulcast via RaceBuddy.Frontstretch Trivia Guarantee: If we mess up, you get the shirt off our backs!
