Nationwide Series: Logano, Hornish Complete Penske 1-2 at Chicagoland

Sprint Cup Series regular Joey Logano passed teammate Sam Hornish, Jr. for the lead with 15 laps to go and was able to hold on to earn his second Nationwide win of 2013 at Chicagoland Speedway.  This event, a standalone for NASCAR's second-tier division was the "main event" during a final off weekend for Cup regulars.

Hornish finished second and took over the points lead from Regan Smith, who finished 13th.  Austin Dillon finished third and won the $100,000 Nationwide Dash 4 Cash bonus for the second week in a row.  Elliott Sadler and Brian Vickers rounded out the top-5 finishers.  Check out our full breakdown of Sunday's STP 300 at Frontstretch.

Shear Out at ThorSport?

Details are tough to come by at this point, but according to SPEED's Ray Dunlap, Joe Shear, Jr., who has served as the crew chief on Johnny Sauter's No. 98 Carolina Nut Co. Toyota at ThorSport Racing in the Camping World Truck Series has apparently resigned from his position.  No reason was given for the departure.

Shear had just returned in Iowa from a four-race suspension stemming from a fuel cell violation in Kansas back in April.  At the time of the penalty, Sauter was right behind teammate Matt Crafton in the standings.  The 25-point penalty that was given to the team, plus recent form has dropped Sauter to fifth in the standings, 48 points out.

It is currently unclear who will serve as Sauter's crew chief in Wednesday's CarCash Mudsummer Classic presented by CNBC Prime's The Profit.  During Shear's suspension, Jesse Saunders and Dan LeMasters teamed up to serve as co-crew chiefs for Sauter.

Owen Kelly to Make Sprint Cup Debut at Watkins Glen

On Saturday, various media outlets reported that Australian Owen Kelly has been tapped to drive the No. 51 Chevrolet for Phoenix Racing at Watkins Glen.  For Kelly, it will be his Sprint Cup Series debut.

Kelly is thrilled about his upcoming opportunity.

"The phrase 'a dream come true' is used a lot, but there is no other way to describe this," Kelly said on Saturday.  "When you look at the numbers, NASCAR is the pinnacle of world motorsports and I am humbled that an organization with the history and depth of Phoenix Racing has provided me with this opportunity.  It has all come together very quickly, but I have to thank everyone who has been so supportive of me including James Finch, Nick Harrison, Andrew Dickenson and the Joe Gibbs Racing operation. I am proud to be one of a select few Australians to have been given a shot at NASCAR's top level and I will be doing everything in my power to give Phoenix Racing the best possible result at Watkins Glen."

Phoenix Racing crew chief Nick Harrison is also very high on Kelly's abilities.

"James (Finch) came into the shop and we were throwing a few names around. Robby Gordon was a candidate and then Owen's name was put up," Harrison said.  "We are pumped to have him as part of our operation. Anyone who looks at his career and has watched him in his Nationwide qualifying and races knows he has got talent."

Kelly has two previous starts in the Nationwide Series.  In 2010, Kelly drove for Baker-Curb Racing in the inaugural Bucyrus 200 at Road America.  There, Kelly impressed by finishing a strong fifth after starting ninth.  Earlier this year, Kelly returned to Road America in the No. 54 Monster Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing.  Kelly was right in the hunt until running low on fuel late and dropping to fourth.  In addition, Kelly practiced and qualified the No. 9 Ford that Marcos Ambrose used to win at Montreal in 2010.

Kelly has 33 career starts in the V8 Supercar Championship Series dating back to 2000.  His best career finish is third in the 2007 Just Car Insurance 500, an endurance race at Sandown International Raceway near Melbourne.  Kelly shared his Ford Falcon with Steven Richards.  Kelly also has 11 starts in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, with a best finish of sixth in 2005 from 33rd on the grid.  There, Kelly shared the No. 50 Holden Commodore with Nathan Pretty.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: In the 1997 Brickyard 400, Rich Bickle qualified for the event in a one-off ride, the No. 26 Chevrolet for Darrell Waltrip Motorsports sponsored by KFC.  Bickle, who drove for Waltrip's Truck Series team at the time, had a great weekend until late in the race.  What happened?

Check back Tuesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Friday's Answer:

Q: Mike Skinner was considered to be a favorite to at least score a decent finish in the inaugural Camping World Truck Series to Chicagoland Speedway in 2009.  However, a chance at a top finish was erased late.  What happened?

A: With 13 laps to go, David Starr and Tayler Malsam had contact entering Turn 3.  Starr slid up into the outside wall with his Zachry Toyota.  Malsam slid down the track, hit Skinner, overcorrected, slid again and regained control after hitting Jason White.  The crash can be seen here.

Malsam was out on the spot.  Starr lost multiple laps due to repairs, but eventually finished in 22nd.  White ended up two laps down in 19th, while Skinner finished as the last driver on the lead lap in 13th.
