It's Official: Harvick, Budweiser to SHR
Budweiser announced on this morning that they will join Kevin Harvick at Stewart-Haas Racing next season. The King of Beers, who joined Harvick in 2011 following the departure of Shell / Pennzoil, will serve as primary sponsor on the No. 4 SHR Chevrolet for 20 races, along with associate sponsorship for the remaining events on the schedule.
"Over the last three years, Kevin has been an amazing ambassador for Budweiser, both on and off the track," said Blaise D'Sylva, vice president of media, sports and entertainment marketing for Anheuser-Busch. "We value that level of commitment, and we're proud to join him at Stewart-Haas Racing next season."
Harvick announced coming into the 2013 season that he would not be returning to Richard Childress Racing next year. And despite the "lame duck" status many labeled him with, he grabbed a win at Charlotte and sits solidly in fourth in the standings.
"I've developed a great relationship with so many people at Budweiser and am very happy it's an association that will continue for many years to come," Harvick said in a statement. "We've enjoyed a lot of success together and our expectations match right up with those of Stewart-Haas Racing."
Harvick was chosen to pilot the No. 29 Chevrolet following Dale Earnhardt's passing in the 2001 Daytona 500.
"I can't thank Richard Childress and everyone at RCR enough for everything they've done for my career," Harvick said. "I was just trying to make a name for myself in the Truck Series and Richard believed in me enough to make me a part of his race team back in 1999. Without him, and without the hard work of so many people at RCR, I wouldn't be where I am today."
Ryan Newman, who's been with SHR since its inception, will not be returning to the organization next season.
"We are not ready to expand to a fourth team. Unfortunately, this will be the last year that we have Ryan (Newman) with us," SHR Owner Tony Stewart said. "That's probably what has made this a bittersweet day. I'm bringing in another one of my friends to the organization, but also knowing that I'm losing a friend at the end of the year to the organization. The number one thing when Ryan and I spoke is that our friendship will not change.
"This was a business decision that was Gene's (Haas) as well as mine and it was a hard decision. There is a personal side and there is a business side. For Ryan and I we had to put the personal bit of it aside to work through the business part, he continued. "I'll do everything I can to help Ryan in any way I can moving forward to try to help him in his effort to find another team next year. I'm behind him 100 percent. I believe in him 100 percent. I truly wish we were able to facilitate four teams at this time. We are just not able to do that. Down the road I'm sure if that becomes a possibility that he will most definitely will be on the list to fill the fourth seat again."

Richard Childress has expressed interest in having Ryan Newman fill the vacant seat Harvick is leaving behind, but the organization has not made any official announcements.

In Case You Missed It

Long-time ARCA Racing Series driver Frank Kimmel will make his first Truck Series start in nine years this Saturday night at Iowa Speedway. Kimmel will pilot the No. 13 Ansell / Menard's Toyota for ThorSport Racing.
"ThorSport and I have got some unfinished business in the Truck Series. We tried to make the 2011 season finale at Homestead when Johnny Sauter had a shot to win the championship and we were trying to support that effort," Kimmel said. "But even though Jeriod had a truck that was fast enough in practice to make the race, qualifying got rained-out and we had no owner points, so we sat that one out."
The nine-time ARCA champion and current points leader has just twelve starts in the Truck Series. He's finished in the top 10 twice--a ninth at Homestead in 1996 and an eighth at Daytona in 2004. With just 35 trucks on the entry list at Iowa, Kimmel will make the field.
IMS, FanVision Partner
For the first time ever, FanVision and Indianapolis Motor Speedway have partnered to bring fans an enhanced viewing experience for the July 26th through July 28th race weekend. The handheld device features in-car cameras, real-time stats, driver communications and even live race broadcasts for those in the stands or infield at the track.
"We always seek to provide the best fan experience possible at IMS events," said Jarrod Krisiloff, IMS senior director of marketing. "FanVision will provide additional information and content for every NASCAR fan, bringing added value to their race weekend as they follow their favorite drivers during the races at IMS."
Fans who would like to utilize FanVision during the Indy weekend later this month can purchase their Friday through Sunday FanVision rental for $49.99 in advance or $59.99 at the track.

"There's nothing tricky or fancy about [New Hampshire]. It's just a fun track. It just seems like it's always been a fun driver's track. Your car has to work well there but when you get to racing guys – you're trying to out-brake them, trying to get your car to turn and you struggle for forward bite. It's just got a little bit of everything the drivers look for to have a good race. It certainly doesn't help if someone has a bad attitude going in there. It kind of puts a strike against you, but I'm not going to say that you're already beat. There are tracks that I've been to that weren't my favorite tracks, but I still found a way to win there. You've just got to stay focused and work hard to find what it takes to be good." Tony Stewart
"Last year I was really proud of the guys on the No. 55. New Hampshire is all about track position. We qualified great but had to start at the back. We had to come a long way to the front and once we got there on two tires we held our spot pretty well. If a few cautions had gone different it could have been a lot better finish. I think we'll probably see something similar on Sunday. It all boils down to track position." Brian Vickers
"I'm really looking forward to New Hampshire this weekend. We tested there last month and learned a few things. Our team is determined to get a top 10 this weekend at New Hampshire, especially after we were so close last weekend at Daytona. It would be awesome to have a strong showing in our Best Buy Ford with the Fenway Sports Group in attendance." Ricky Stenhouse, Jr.

Keepin' It Short: Another Week in the Midwest
by Mike Neff
Sprint car racing on dirt is as Midwestern as county fairs and grilled corn on the cob. The blood lines of open-wheeled racers and fans run very deep throughout the region, and during the entire Summer, one state after another runs a sprint week. We highlighted the Ohio Sprint week a couple of weeks ago, and this time it is the home of USAC, the state of Indiana. Indiana's Sprint Week is hosted by seven tracks over nine days. This year's version is the 26th edition of the Summer collection of Sprint features.
One of the great aspects of Indiana Sprint Week is the local flavor to the prize funds and items that go along with the title. B&W Auto Mart, which is located on 45 that runs through Bloomington, will be awarding the Josh Burton Hard Charger award for the driver who advances the most positions throughout the week. Buck and Betty Rice, who have been backers of USAC for years will be giving $100 each night to the fastest qualifier. The coolest award is a curly cherry wood rocking chair, valued at $3,500, that goes to the winning car owner. While winning the Sprint Week title is the ultimate honor, every award carries special value for the participants who receive them.
The week will start off with a race at I-69 Speedway in Gas City on Friday night. Saturday's race will be held at Kokomo Speedway, while the race on Sunday is taking place at Lawrenceburg Speedway. Two days off follow the three opening nights before the Sprint Week picks back up at Terre Haute on Wednesday, before heading off to Putnamville and Bloomington and wrapping up at Haubstadt. Dave Darland rolls into the week with a 35 point lead in the National Sprint Point Standings and is hoping to put his name on the Sprint Week Champion's Trophy for the fourth time. He's previously won the Sprint Week title in 1998, 2001 and 2007. If Darland is able to wrangle the title away from the other hot shoes in the seven races, he'll join Levi Jones and Kevin Thomas as the only four time Indiana Sprint Week champion's.
Over the 26 years history of the race week, there have been 14 drivers crowned king of the Indiana Sprints. With Indiana being the home of USAC, scoring the title in the state's designated Sprint Week carries a very significant stature with it.
The champions over the history of the week include:
1988 – Randy Kinser
1989 – Chuck Amati
1990 – Chuck Amati and Gary Trammell
1991 – Bob Kinser
1992 – Kevin Thomas
1993 – Kevin Thomas
1994 – Kelly Kinser
1995 – Kevin Thomas
1996 – Kevin Thomas
1997 – JJ Yeley
1998 – Dave Darland
1999 – Tony Elliott
2000 – Jay Drake
2001 – Dave Darland
2002 – Cory Kruseman
2003 – JJ Yeley
2004 – Levi Jones
2005 – Cory Kruseman
2006 – Jon Stanbrough
2007 – Dave Darland
2008 – Levi Jones
2009 – Levi Jones
2010 – Jon Stanbrough
2011 – Chris Windom
2012 – Levi Jones
With Levi Jones' recent retirement, he won't be around to attempt to repeat as champion. Dave Darland will be putting on an all out assault on the title to not only try and score the fourth championship of his career, but also pad his point lead in the national standings. For race fans around the state of Indiana, this week is a great opportunity to see some of the best Sprint Car drivers in USAC dueling it out for the biggest weekly title under the blanket of the sanctioning body.
Whelen All-American National Championship Battle
Heading into last weekend, with four points races on the docket, Lee Pulliam and Deac McCaskill were neck and neck with 728 points each. Pulliam responded with a win, two seconds and a seventh. Meanwhile, McCaskill could only put up two top 5s and three top 10s. The resulting math gives Pulliam an eight point lead over McCaskill. Tommy Lemons notched a win, three top 5s and three top 10s to leapfrog over Keith Rocco and retake third place by adding 28 points to his total. Rocco's week consisted of two races but only one top 5 and one top 10 finish. The resulting gain of 14 points is why he slipped behind Lemons. Rounding out the top 5 in points is Ryan Preece, who was recently announced as a member of NASCAR Next and has since notched eight wins in 13 races, including five in a row. Preece ran two races last week, notching wins in both, which were full points fields and gained himself 66 points, drawing within four points of Rocco in fourth place.
The second half of the top 10 is made up of CE Falk, III, Anthony Anders, Chad Finchum, Brandon Dean and Burt Myers. With Lemons jump into third, it is now possible to attend a Late Model race in the Southeast and see the top three drivers in the National Points running against each other. Pulliam is committed to running at South Boston in their twin 75 lap races. It is not known if McCaskill and Lemons will run at South Boston or head up the road to Motor Mile to run their twin 125 lap races. If they head to South Boston, it will be an outstanding show.
Position Name Races Wins Top 5s Top 10s Total Points
1. Lee Pulliam 29 16 26 27 742
2. Deac McCaskill 26 10 29 25 734

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: The 1996 Jiffy Lube 300 at then-New Hampshire International Speedway is best known as the race in which Ernie Irvan completed his comeback from near-fatal injuries to return to Victory Lane. Joe Nemechek qualified a decent 11th on Friday but had multiple issues in the race. What happened?
Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!
Thursday's Answer:
Thursday's Answer:
Q: Later in the same 2001 race, Ron Hornaday took a very unusual ride on the backstretch. What happened?
A: Hornaday was more or less forced into the wall exiting Turn 2 by Stacy Compton. As Compton continued to squeeze Hornaday, Hornaday's Conseco Pontiac began to climb up on the wall. When the car came off the wall, Hornaday spun into the infield. The incident can be seen here. Hornaday was able to continue, but finished a disappointing 34th.Frontstretch Trivia Guarantee: If we mess up, you get the shirt off our backs!
