HendrickCars.com To Sponsor Said At Sonomaby Justin Tucker
Boris Said and FAS Lane Racing will feature a familiar sponsor this weekend at Sonoma. HendrickCars.com, who has backed Said in the past will do so again during this weekend's Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
"Rick (Hendrick, chairman of Hendrick Automotive Group) has been a fantastic partner in our BMW dealership, and it's an honor to represent Hendrickcars.com, a brand that focuses on personal and professional service," commented Said. "I'm looking forward to having a great weekend back on the track. I've always enjoyed Sonoma and have had some solid top-10 finishes there. I'm looking forward to adding to that number on Sunday."
In 13 career starts on the 1.99-mile road course in Northern California, Said has five top-10 results, with a best finish of sixth in both 2003 and '04. He boasts an average finish of 20.8 over those 13 races and has one pole at Sonoma, back in 2003.
HendrickCars.com will also be a major associate sponsor on the No. 32 for FAS Lane Racing in five Sprint Cup Series races with veteran and four-time NSCS race winner Ken Schrader behind the wheel. Those races are at Kentucky next weekend, New Hampshire in July, Bristol in August, Richmond in September, and Homestead in November. The funding comes despite the fact Said drives a Ford, while Hendrick has been aligned with Chevrolet for nearly three decades.
Experts Claim Headrest May Have Helped Save Leffler's Life
According to two prominent safety experts, Jason Leffler could have had a better chance of surviving his fatal sprint car wreck in New Jersey last Wednesday had he had a full containment headrest similar to what is used in NASCAR. Leffler, 37, was killed when his 410 Sprint Car hit the wall and rolled multiple times during a June 12th race at Bridgeport Speedway.
Bill Simpson, a racing safety pioneer and founder of Impact Racing, along with two-time Nationwide Series champion Randy Lajoie, who now builds and designs race car seats, studied Leffler's wreck and are in agreement that a 180-degree surround headrest would have made a difference at the 0.625-mile racetrack last week.
The New Jersey State Police have yet to release the results of their investigation into the fatal accident. Lajoie has been in touch with them regarding their progress, while Simpson has talked to mechanics and eyewitnesses who were at the track that fateful night. Both were told that Leffler was wearing a head and neck restraint but did not have a headrest suitable enough to keep his head in line with the rest of his body in case of an impact.
"My findings showed everything with the head and neck restraint is fine when you have a forward impact as long as it doesn't go past 30 degrees, from one side to the other," Simpson said. "There is no lateral protection with the head and neck restraint. Nothing. Your head can flop from side to side. There is nothing to stop it from doing that. That car that Leffler was driving, it did not have a 180-degree head surround like a [Sprint] Cup car has. When he crashed and landed on his side and stopped, his head kept going."
"He wasn't contained," LaJoie agreed. "That's why we haven't killed anyone in NASCAR, because we learned not to let the body and head move. Your head, chest and pelvis need to stay in line as close as possible."
The HANS device was mandated by NASCAR in 2002, one year after Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash during the last lap of the 2001 Daytona 500. Since then, there has not been another fatality in any of NASCAR's top three series.
Lajoie and Simpson hope Leffler's death raises awareness among short track drivers to increase safety standards like NASCAR did after Earnhardt's death.
"The systems in those cars can be greatly improved," LaJoie said. "On the short-track level, with better belt systems, seat mount systems and neck systems, I bet over 95 percent of the crashes are survivable."

MIS Named As NASCAR Foundation Track of the Year
The NASCAR Foundation has named Michigan International Speedway its "Track of the Year" for the second year in a row, recognizing the track's charitable and community efforts. The facility was recognized for hosting programs like Track and Explore, Fish Your Bass Off, NASCAR United, Extreme Bus Make Over, Racing to Read and the Spirit of America blood drive.
"All our employees and volunteers are truly passionate about giving back to our community," MIS president Roger Curtis said. "This is where we work, live and play. And it's up to us to be involved and to make our community stronger. We will always be a leader in the community for community giving."
The speedway is "always striving to improve every year" and has even spent time working with defending champion Brad Keselowski and his Checkered Flag Foundation.
Martinsville Speedway Launches New, Fan-Friendly Website
Earlier this week, Martinsville Speedway launched a new, more fan-friendly web design to give fans easy access to all the information they could need. With a new style and color scheme, topics could easily be found under dropdown tabs and several ways to access ticket information.
"We wanted to make sure when fans went to our website, they would be able to find what they wanted without becoming frustrated and stressed," Martinsville Speedway president Clay Campbell said. "If they want to buy tickets, we want it to be a quick process. If they want to look at photo galleries or race results, we want them to be easy to find. Regardless of why someone comes to our website, we want their visit to be seamless and productive."
The new website feature a race results archive, photo galleries, a map section including a 3D seating map and a section for first-time visitors. Tickets for the Goody's Fast Relief 500 in October are still available, starting at $37 on the speedway's website or by calling 877-RACE-TIX.
Donors' Names To Adorn No. 24 Chevrolet At Chicagoland
AARP Foundation announced earlier this week a new promotion that will allow fans to have their names on Jeff Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet at Chicagoland Speedway later this year; at the same time, they will help feed some of the nearly nine million Americans over the age of 50 that face a hunger risk. Any fan who donates $124 will have their name on the hood of the No. 24 car and will receive a digital "thank you" and a limited edition keepsake for their support.
"Too many older Americans face difficult decisions every day between eating and paying for other necessities, like keeping a roof over their heads or seeing their doctors," AARP Foundation president JoAnn Jenkins said. "We hope that fans will enjoy the 'Ride with Jeff Gordon' while also helping out on an important cause. Plus, putting your name on the hood of the No. 24 Drive to End Hunger Chevrolet SS is your best shot of crossing the finish line a split second before Jeff himself."
Fans interested in joining the fight can learn more or make a donation by heading to the Drive to End Hunger website.

They Said It:
"I can't wait — hopefully, we can do it again. Fun racetrack. It's the first road course of the year. It's always nerve-wracking just getting on the racetrack, shifting gears and having to downshift coming onto pit road to meet pit road speed — it's exciting. The track itself is fun. I think it's like a short track of road course racing. I love short track racing, so it's just one of those tracks I've always been able to get on the racetrack, find pretty good speed and get comfortable and get settled in and have a good weekend." Clint Bowyer
"We are coming off a big win for us in Michigan and I'm looking forward to Sonoma. I love road racing. As long as I can keep it on the track, keep the transmission in it and the brakes on it, I think we'll have a top-5 finish or even a chance at the win. I'm looking forward to getting to Sonoma and having some fun." Greg Biffle
"I enjoy road-course racing at Sonoma (Raceway). We've always had a fast car there, but just haven't had the stats to show for it. We are taking the same car back this year that we've raced the past two years, so I'm confident we'll have another fast Moen/Menards Chevrolet this weekend. I wouldn't mind if we had a couple more road course races on the schedule to break up the oval racing a bit. Racing in Sonoma and Watkins Glen (International) is a lot different from what we do week-to-week. There is a lot of shifting involved and we make both right and left turns. Even though we only go to two road course events a year, it doesn't take long to get back into that type of race mode again. I've run a lot of laps at Sonoma, so it's just like going to any track. You remember what you did last year and you have confidence that your car is going to respond the same." Paul Menard

Keepin' It Short: Going Racing North Of The Border
by Mike Neff
The track was initially constructed in 1970 by Ralph and Iris Hurley. The entrance to the pits was located on Power Dam Drive in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. That resulted in the track being named Power Dam Speedway. The track's ownership switched to Pat Hutt in 1973. In 1974, Hutt met an untimely demise and the track's future was in doubt. As a result, it was the only year in existence that the track did not crown a champion.
The Hurleys eventually reclaimed the ownership of the track and ran it up until 1980, when the track appeared as though it was going to close. Ron Morin, who raced Mini Stocks and Street Stocks there, began leasing the track from the Hurleys in 1980 and did it for two years before taking over ownership of the venue. The following season, Morin joined up with some of the other tracks in the area to race under the DIRTCar banner.
Some 43 years after the gates were thrown open on Cornwall Motor Speedway, Ron Morin continues to run the track and has positioned it among the premier racetracks in North America. As a testament to that fact, the World of Outlaw Late Models debuted at the facility in 2008. Four years later, the World of Outlaw Sprint cars showed up and turned laps at just over 10 seconds. Both series will run again this season at Cornwall. If you have the opportunity to head over the border to eastern Ontario this Saturday night, it will be worth the trip to see the WoO Late Models mix it up on the tight confines of Cornwall.
Whelen All-American National Points Championship
Lee Pulliam continues to lead the National Point Standings, grabbing another victory for his 13th win of the season. With 21 races in the books, the incremental gain in points was only 12, bringing his season total to 696, 114 points away from a perfect season. Deac McCaskill made a big move by adding a win and 37 points to his total. He now sits just 10 points behind Pulliam in the standings. Tommy Lemons, Jr. grabbed a top 5 this past week to build his point total to 597, 26 higher than he had last week. C.E. Falk raced twice during the week but was unable to find his way to Victory Lane. Falk did score two top 5s, which pushed his season total to 589, 68 ahead of his previous week's total and 107 out of the point lead.
Anthony Anders picked up another win for the season, but his 23-race total prevented him from picking up as much ground as Keith Rocco did even though he didn't win a race. Rocco is now fifth in points while Anders only gained nine, which caused him to slip from fourth to sixth. Also of note this week, Burt Myers has moved into the top 10 in points with his four wins in 11 races at the historic Bowman-Gray Stadium.
