Bruton Smith Issues Statement About Possible Charlotte Race Date Moveby Tom Bowles
One day after a local television interview claimed Bruton Smith was "70%" on moving Charlotte Motor Speedway's Fall Sprint Cup race date for 2014, causing a national furor the Speedway Media, Inc. President issued a statement in rebuttal. Smith, who was quoted as saying he wants to give sister racetrack Las Vegas Motor Speedway a second race date instead, in the Chase claimed the rumors were just that – rumors. But he still took time to jab local Cabarrus County officials he has claimed for years owe him millions of dollars in tax breaks to help support infrastructure improvements to the speedway.
"The 'done deal' report by WBTV regarding moving a race is false," he said. "No final decision has been made regarding any race date move, and I have not discussed this with NASCAR.
"Instead of what 'could' happen, let's set the facts straight about what has happened. We've invested $100 million in the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex in the past six years to make it even better for the fans. We've expanded our fan zone, added pit road suites and built the world's largest HDTV for every fan to enjoy. We've put more people to work with these projects and we've added more events to the calendar to bring in more tourists and fans. And we've done this during the worst economy since the Great Depression.
"We've done this without asking for a handout from the government, like we've seen from so many other sports facilities, teams or franchises, and yet at the same time property values are falling during the recession, our Cabarrus County taxes have doubled since 2005. We absolutely love the fans that come to Charlotte Motor Speedway. It's frustrating to think about the future and consider that the local government politicians may say nice things to the media, but raising taxes does not support the tourism business, the area economy or companies trying to grow."
Smith did not launch into ticket sales for this week's Coca-Cola 600, and the sport no longer releases attendance figures. However, sources claim sales are down compared to this point last year, a bad sign for the Fall event which typically draws fewer fans. Meanwhile, Smith has consistently claimed the county owes him up to $60 million, a number politicians appear unwilling to pay despite any potential threat.
Mike Harmon – Jennifer Jo Cobb Hauler Story Takes Another Twist
Is Mike Harmon telling the truth? That's in dispute after a probable cause affidavit, released Tuesday for public view, insinuates the 55-year-old driver knows where Truck Series driver/owner Jennifer Jo Cobb's missing hauler and equipment have been taken. Harmon, who was arrested last week and charged with breaking and entering, obstruction of justice, and felony larceny, is at the epicenter of the theft of Cobb's property, stolen on May 11th and valued at approximately $279,000.
Harmon, in public comments, has stated he had no idea where the hauler is, claiming there was no involvement in the theft. However, a Rowan County detective has testified that the opposite is true; according to him, in this affidavit, Harmon made it clear the hauler was in his possession as a way to retrieve money that was never paid back. In fact, the driver said he would deliver the hauler back to the sheriff's office only to never return it and choose the option of getting arrested instead.
Harmon's business partner, David Novak, has also been issued an arrest warrant for felony larceny and obstruction of justice but the Illinois native remains at large. Novak, who was once romantically involved with Jo Cobb no longer supports the No. 10 Truck team, aligning himself with Harmon, Harmon's girlfriend and a new Nationwide/Truck Series effort that has attempted a number of races in both divisions in 2013. Both men maintain that Cobb owes them hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid bills, charges the female owner/driver firmly denies.
News 'N' Notes
- NASCAR's All-Star Race audience ticked upward in 2013. Despite a one-hour rain delay, the final Nielsen ratings number of 2.3 is up 4.5 percent from a year ago. Overall, SPEED network's viewership for the entire week, which included an ARCA race from Toledo and the Charlotte Truck Series race was up 19 percent year-to-year.
However, this season NASCAR's television audience remains flat with 2012 numbers, a bit of a disappointment considering Feburary's Daytona 500 alone, the sport's most-watched event had a 24 percent increase in viewership.
- In memory of the late Dick Trickle, Kenny Wallace announced Tuesday he'll run a special decal in Saturday's Nationwide Series race. The "White Knight" logo on his nameplate stuck to Trickle due to his old, SuperAmerica gas stations paint scheme he took to Victory Lane in short tracks all across Wisconsin and the Midwest.

The Field Vs. The Big Dog in the Coca-Cola 600
WTF Wednesdays
WTF Wednesdays
by Ellen Richardson
Although Jimmie Johnson's win in Saturday Night's All-Star Race didn't come as a complete shock, my actually pulling for a Busch brother did. While I have tried to stay unbiased over the last few years, I have to admit that I continue to pull for unexpected teams and drivers to win a big race like the All-Star event. Watching Kurt Busch grab the win in the fourth segment, you couldn't help but hope for Busch to end up ahead, proving that Hendrick Motorsports won't always be at the top of Sprint Cup races. Ultimately, this surprise didn't happen, and Hendrick rolled Saturday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway with Johnson's last segment domination. Is it poised to happen again? This week, the Sprint Cup Series is gearing up for the Coca-Cola 600, and with Johnson's winning record in this race (2003-'05), you have to wonder if this driver will withstand the test of endurance for Hendrick Motorsports and be rolling into Victory Lane once more. Or, can someone can take Johnson down in NASCAR's longest race of the season, at a track that was once appropriately titled "his house?"
Who has the best shot at taking down Five-Time this Sunday? Let's find out.
Kyle Busch
Winner of the second and third 20-lap segments in Saturday night's All-Star race, "Rowdy" Busch holds the modern-era record for most race wins in a season across the top three national NASCAR series. Although Busch has yet to pull off a Sprint Cup Series win at Charlotte Motor Speedway, his first Camping World Truck Series win came at this track. He also earned his first CWTS win since 2011 just this past Friday night at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Charging from the back of the field after a pit road penalty, Busch earned his fifth Truck Series victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Busch also gave Hendrick driver Kasey Kahne a run for his money in the 2012 Coca-Cola 600. Although he finished third, Busch proved that his record at the 1.5-mile track is continuing to improve and that he has the capability to challenge Hendrick's domination.
Kurt Busch
Along with brother Kyle, Kurt Busch was the winner of two segments in Saturday night's All-Star Race. Once a force to be reckoned with during his time competing with teams like Roush Fenway Racing and Penske Racing, Busch has hit a rough patch since being removed from the top-tier equipment that's the key these days to winning.
Now competing with Furniture Row Racing, a little-engine-that-could single-car program he seems to have found his niche and has been very competitive over the last few weeks. Of course, rumors continue to swirl as to whether he may be using this team as a stepping stone back to the open arms of a large team like Richard Childress Racing, but Busch seems to genuinely want to bring home a win for this group (which works closely with RCR). Maybe year is the one the elder Busch can pull off a victory, similar to his 2010 Coca-Cola 600 win for Penske Racing.
Matt Kenseth
Of course, both Kyle Busch and Kenseth compete for one of the largest and wealthiest Sprint Cup teams in Joe Gibbs Racing. This team has had to endure some pretty harsh penalties thrown at them this season and seem to continue to be under the microscope. But despite all of that, Kenseth has continued to prove that he has found the honey hole at JGR that has not only made him more competitive, but has him winning more races.
The true test will now be thrown at Kenseth and his new team to prove whether or not they can handle the challenging Coca-Cola 600 as well as Johnson and his crew. Perhaps, lucky 13 (as in years since Kenseth's last Coca-Cola 600 win) will present yet another victory this year for the No. 20 team.
Before ending this article, I also want to remind readers that the most important element of Sunday's race will be the men and women who gave their lives serving our country. Memorial Day is truly a time to remember these members of the military for keeping our country free. So be sure to tune into the pre-race ceremonies that will be paying tribute to the members of the United States Armed Forces, veterans and their families.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: In 1993, Dale Earnhardt successfully defended his Coca-Cola 600 victory from the previous year, leading 152 laps along the way. However, Earnhardt likely made his charge to victory a little harder than it needed to be. What happened?
Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!
Tuesday's Answer:
Q: Bobby Hamilton got a big break in 1990, scoring a ride in the Coca-Cola 600 for TriStar Racing in a part-time Pontiac. Gary Bechtel came on board with Diamond Ridge sponsorship after Hamilton qualified a surprising eighth. However, the day ended early for the Busch Grand National regular in Turn 2. What happened?
A: A quarter of the way into the race, Hamilton went hard into the wall in Turn 2, sweeping up Dale Earnhardt in the process. Let's say that there were some cheers from the grandstands when this happened. Aftermath footage of the crash can be seen here. Hamilton, who was running for a part-time operation, was out for the day. Earnhardt returned to the race after a mad thrash in the garage area and finished 30th, 138 laps down.
