Hi Thomas,
I cannot add much more except the screen looks like a reel of film with 2 spools horizontal, one being full the other not. Also the artists name is clear and the date 1936. That could lead somewhere.

Hi Juliette,
Thanks, this sounds indeed as a most valid interpretation.
In fact, the images (there are some more) are coming from a variete theater, annex early cinema in Belgium.
I’m trying if I can find more specific information on them, they are nice hand painted designs on paper.
Perhaps I can find some more clues on old program leaflets, which I still need to find …
All best,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
They look like designs for stage backcloths to me. The pencil sketch figure looks like he is listening to something and the centre image looks very like a stylized image on a film reel. I would say that it is a backcloth design for a variety review with a very modern style and is trying to make references to modern communications (hence the zig-zag "radio-waves" on the right the emphasis on news from all over the world and the inclusion of huge searchlights in the main design...

Sent: 08 May 2013 11:59Subject: World NewsDear list members,
Recently I found this image and I’m not sure how to interpret this correct. (see image attached)
Could this be the depicting of the life broadcast of an event? Radio or Television?
One see people dancing in the center below of the image.
On the right of the image one sees a pencil sketch (floating in mid air) depicting a man behind a receiver (or transmitter).
The only text in the image is a sign board which reads ‘Wereld News’. (World News).
The image comes from a set of ‘art deco’ decor sketches from a variete theater. (see another image, BAR, for comparison)
All best and thanks for all tips,
Thomas
