April Fool's Joke Three Days Early: Martin to Drive No. 11 Only at Martinsville

Late Thursday, JGR officially announced Mark Martin would drive the No. 11 for the next few weeks while regular driver Denny Hamlin continues to recover from an L1 compression fracture to his lower back.

Turns out someone was a bit premature in pulling the trigger.

Upon hearing the news of Martin's signing to drive the No. 11 in Hamlin's absence, Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) quickly announced that Martin would return to the No. 55 in Texas, as previously scheduled.  However, since Martin is not scheduled to drive the No. 55 this weekend in Martinsville, he will still drive the car this weekend.

MWR has since made Brian Vickers, who is entered in the No. 55 at Martinsville, available to drive the No. 11 starting at Texas.  Vickers is a known quantity to JGR, running as a full-time driver for them in the Nationwide Series.

JGR President J.D. Gibbs was a little embarrassed at the premature announcement of Martin's involvement with the team for the duration of Hamlin's absence.  However, he is happy to have Martin and Vickers share the No. 11.

"Obviously having to find someone to fill in for Denny is not an ideal situation to have to be in and when you start a process like this, you obviously begin to look at the drivers that are not only available but also able to drive for your race team and manufacturer.  We were a bit premature in determining Mark's status past Martinsville," Gibbs said in a press release.  "However, we're real happy to have the opportunity to get Brian in our Cup cars and with him driving Nationwide for us, we think we have some continuity there that is beneficial."

The whole situation has made Hamlin a little bit confused.

"This just in.. I'll give away the drivers seat to the [No. 11] car at Dega to one of my followers," Hamlin tweeted on Friday.

As of right now, there have been no more updates on Hamlin's condition other than he is stable and recovering on schedule.  He is still expected to miss five races with the fracture.

Hines to Race for ThorSport Racing at Eldora

ThorSport Racing announced on Friday that they have signed USAC racer Tracy Hines to drive for the team in the Inaugural Mudsummer Classic at Eldora Speedway on July 24.  It is unclear from the team's press release, but it appears likely that Hines will be in the team's part-time No. 13.

Unlike dirt late model legend Scott Bloomquist, who will be making his NASCAR debut for Kyle Busch Motorsports, Hines brings plenty of NASCAR experience with him, including 52 career starts in the Truck Series. Of those, all but four came for ThorSport.  In 2004, Hines drove the No. 88 after Matt Crafton left to drive the No. 6 for Kevin Harvick, Inc.  When Crafton returned for 2005, Hines moved to the No. 13.  He earned two top-5 finishes for the team (scoring fifth-place efforts at Mansfield Motorsports Park and Richmond International Raceway).

In addition, Hines drove 17 races in the now-Nationwide Series for Tommy Baldwin Racing and FitzBradshaw Racing.  His best finish there was a 13th at Bristol in March, 2006.

Jet Edge to Sponsor Vickers at Martinsville

Michael Waltrip Racing and Jet Edge announced on Friday that Jet Edge Waterjet Systems will sponsor the No. 55 and driver Brian Vickers in Sunday's STP Gas Booster 500 at Martinsville Speedway this weekend.  Jet Edge is a vendor partner of MWR and provides their water-cutting equipment to the race team for use in cutting their parts.

Jet Edge President Jude Lague is very happy to be back on board with MWR and Vickers.

"Brian [Vickers] ran an incredible race last fall at Loudon and we're really excited to see him back in the Jet Edge car this spring," Lague said.  "We're very proud that MWR uses Jet Edge equipment and that they are installing a second Jet Edge. "

Jet Edge sponsored Vickers last September at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in cooperation with Freightliner.  Despite starting from the rear of the field due to an engine change, Vickers finished a strong ninth at the flat track with a reputation of being very hard to pass at.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: In the 1994 Hanes 500, like many other races that season, Geoff Bodine was a threat to potentially win, pacing the field for 71 laps.  However, he failed to reach the finish, unfortunately a common theme for that race team in those days.  What happened this time to knock him out?

Check back Tuesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Friday's Answer:

Q: About the only aspect of the Busch Series' second stint at Nashville Speedway that stayed the same from 1995-2000 was the fact that the race was 320 laps in length.  During that time, the track was repaved, the race was moved to the evening from the afternoon and back again.  What major change came along in 1999 for the event?

A: For 1999, the race was moved from TNN to a live broadcast on CBS.  That's right... network television at Nashville.
