Austin Dillon, winless through the first three races of 2013 is looking to change that in a big way at Bristol. So far, so good for the Nationwide Series sophomore; he led the pack during an incident free morning practice session. The No. 99 car driven by rookie Alex Bowman was second quick, followed by Regan Smith, Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch. Check out the speeds here - 42 drivers ran in preparation for qualifying. A second practice for the series will start at 2:00 PM.

Hamlin Drops Appeal; Still Refuses to Pay Fine
Thursday afternoon, Denny Hamlin tweeted that he had dropped his appeal of the $25,000 fine levied by NASCAR for post-race comments about the Gen-6 car in Phoenix two weeks ago.
"After a lot of thought I have decided not to appeal the fine NASCAR has issued. Dragging myself, my team and NASCAR through the mud for the next two weeks would not be good for anyone. I firmly believe I am in the right on this issue and will stand behind my decision not to pay. I understand NASCAR will do what they feel is necessary based on my decision. Thanks to all of my fans and peers who have supported me in this decision. I look forward to putting it to rest."
Later in the day, NASCAR issued a statement in response to Hamlin dropping his appeal.
"NASCAR announced today that the $25,000 fine assessed to driver Denny Hamlin on March 7 will be settled per Section 12-3 of the 2013 NASCAR rule book after being informed by Hamlin that he will not appeal the penalty. Hamlin was fined after the sanctioning body determined he had violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing). NASCAR considers this matter closed."
According to a report by David Caraviello on nascar.com, Section 12-3 of the NASCAR rule book allows the sanctioning body to deduct unpaid fines from purse money. Hamlin has won just over $600,000 in three events so far this season.
United SportsCar Racing Revealed
Thursday afternoon, the new United SportsCar Racing platform was revealed at Sebring International Raceway. A result of the merger of Grand-Am and the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron, United SportsCar Racing will debut with the Rolex 24 at Daytona next January.
"The new name says it all," said GRAND-AM President and CEO Ed Bennett. "In only six months since we announced the merger, GRAND-AM and the ALMS have taken huge strides to become one organization that will redefine sports car racing in North America. United SportsCar Racing reflects the fundamental spirit of how we are working together toward a common goal."
Additionally, the new competition classes for the 2014 season were revealed:
- Prototype (P) class, combining GRAND-AM's Daytona Prototypes plus the ALMS' P2 and DeltaWing cars
- Prototype Challenge (PC), retained from the current ALMS class structure
- GT Le Mans (GTLM), consisting of the ALMS' current GT class
- GT Daytona (GTD), consisting of GRAND-AM's current GT class and the ALMS' current GTC class
- GX, coming over from the current GRAND-AM structure
Along with the announcement, United SportsCar Racing also launched a brand new website where fans can enter to win a two tickets to next year's series debut at Daytona International Speedway.

Lawn Mower Racing at Food Lion AutoFair
The Food Lion AutoFair, held at Charlotte Motor Speedway April 5-8, will host the STA-BIL Lawn & Mower Garden Racing Series as part of the festivities on Friday and Saturday. The series will spend two days racing lawn mowers on a custom-built dirt track in the modified garage area in the infield at speeds up to 60 mph.
"What better way to celebrate the 21st birthday of the U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association (USLMRA) than with a STA-BIL National Series weekend at the legendary Charlotte Motor Speedway," Bruce Kaufman (AKA "Mr. Mow It All"), president of the USLMRA said in a release. "Lawn mower racing turns 21 on April Fool's Day and how cool it will be to come of age the same week we'll be competing in Charlotte, the home of NASCAR. This is truly mowtivating!"
Lawn mower racers from all over the country will be present to compete in Charlotte the during the first week of April. Additionally, National and regional champions will be available to race and meet with fans throughout the weekend.
"It's mow time at Charlotte," Shaun Johnson, CMS director of racing operations said. "Fans will love the race mowers, and we're excited to have them as part of the Food Lion AutoFair, which is the perfect event partner for lawn mower racing."
The annual Food Lion AutoFair attracts more than 100,000 fans and will features car club displays and automotive parts and memorabilia for sale. It will be open from 8 AM to 6 PM Thursday through Saturday and 8 AM to 4 PM on Sunday. Fans interested in purchasing tickets can visit charlottemotorspeedway.com or call the ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS.
Widow Sues Church Over NASCAR Headstone
An Indiana woman is suing a Catholic church after they refused to install a headstone she purchased to honor her late husband, who died in a car accident in August, 2009, because it failed to meet regulations. According to The Republic, Shannon Carr spent nearly $10,000 to purchase a black granite headstone shaped like a couch that featured color logos from NASCAR among other interests her husband had in sports and the outdoors.
In a follow-up affidavit, Reverand Jonathan Meyer stated that photographs of the headstone were submitted to the St. Joseph Parish Council six weeks before Ms. Carr purchased it, where it was determined the monument "was not acceptable as it was of a secular nature and did not conform to the monument in a Catholic cemetery under Canon Law."
Ms. Carr has chosen not to speak about the case, however her father-in-law, Henry, spoke of separation throughout the congregation.
"I haven't been back to (St. Joseph) church and have asked that I not be buried there along with my son," Carr said. "I'm told the controversy is splitting the church apart, tearing it in half. But I guess that's what has to be done."
Special Judge K. Mark Loyd of Johnson County, Indiana will preside over the case.
Venturini Motorsports To Make Nationwide Series Debut
Jon Wes Townley, who drives full-time in the Camping World Truck Series for Red Horse Racing, and Venturini Motorsports have teamed up for the organization's Nationwide Series debut this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. The Watkinsville, Georgia native will pilot the No. 25 Zaxby's Toyota, powered by Joe Gibbs Racing Engines, in Saturday afternoon's Jeff Foxworthy's Grit Chips 300.
"This is a great opportunity for our team to showcase our ability to compete at the next level. We're extremely excited to carry on our relationsship with John Wes and the opportunity to continue our brand ambassadorship for Zaxby's," Billy Venturini, competition for Venturini Motorsports said. "Expanding our organization's efforts into the Nationwide Series has been a total team effort. We're grateful to our partners for giving us the chance to achieve our goals."
Townley and Venturini Motorsports have already been to victory lane together this year; the 23-year-old won the ARCA Racing Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway last month.
"Looking a few weeks back at the win at Daytona, that was a great way to start off with the team," Townley said. "It was an honor taking them to the first win and Victory Lane at Daytona, and it's going to be an honor being a part of their first Nationwide race. I'm really excited and just hope we can carry that momentum forward. Their mentality is a little different from your average start-up team; they're going to try to win. We're going to get out and do the best we can."
Townley has 43 career Nationwide Series starts, including a best finish of 15th twice--at Las Vegas in 2010 and Talladega in 2012.

Keepin' It Short: Rattlin' Through The Weekend
by Mike Neff
There are several big Super Late Model races during the typical racing season. The Snowball Derby is the big one. The Winchester 400, the World Crown and the All-American 400 are right there. Just behind those races is an event coming up this weekend at South Alabama Speedway in Kinston Alabama. The Rattler will take place this year for the 37th time at South Alabama Speedway. Without question, a majority of the best Super Late Model racers in the country will converge on this track just north of the Gulf of Mexico to see who can take home the trophy with the stuffed rattlesnake predominantly displayed on the base.
The Rattler is a tradition laden event that includes a live rattlesnake wandering around on the start finish line before the event begins. The main event will be preceded by the 8th Annual Grasshopper Pro Late Model Rattler 125 on Saturday. The Pro Late Models have 25 cars entered for the event as of Thursday. Just a few of the names you'll see in the Pro event: Spencer Davis, Mike Garvey, Harrison Burton, Landon Cling, Bubba Pollard and Kyle Plott. Conspicuous by his absence is the 2012 pro champion Augie Grill. Grill will be in the Super race but is choosing not to defend his Pro win this season.
Along with the 125 lap Pro race on Saturday will be qualifying for the Super Late Model race. The top 24 drivers will be locked into the race on Sunday. Just some of the drivers who will be attempting to lock into the event during qualifying on Saturday: Donnie Wilson, Stephen Nasse, TJ Reaid, Ross Kenseth, Chris Wimmer, Augie Gril, Kyle Benjamin and 2012 Rattler champion Bubba Pollard.
Pollard is one of the most dominant Super Late Model racers in the South but never had much luck when it came to the Rattler. He won every other big race at South Alabama and most everywhere in the region, but always seemed to have bad luck in the Rattler. That all changed last year when Pollard finally got the monkey off of his back and took home the Rattler trophy. No driver has ever won the Rattler in back-to-back years, but Pollard hopes to change all of that by taking the trophy again this year.
For fans who are interested in making the trip to Kinston to see one of the big Super races of the season, the ticket prices are very reasonable. Kids under six are always free. From 6-12 they can get in Friday for $5.00, they can get a seat Saturday for $10 and Sunday for $10. If you're going to be there all weekend, you can choose the Weekend Pass for $20. Adults can get in Friday for $10, Saturday for $15 and $20 on St. Patrick's day. Adults can save $5 by buying a weekend pass for $40,00. For the fans who would like to have a reserved seat, they are available for $15 for Friday, $20 for Saturday and $25 on Sunday. A weekend pass will set a person back $55.
A bucket list item for any Short Track fan should be a trip to see the Rattler. The field won't get much more stacked than it will be this year. Head down to South Alabana and find out.

They Said It
"It was pretty exciting to get the win this past weekend, but this week in just another week, and we need to keep plugging away to get the best finishes that we can. I can't wait to get to Bristol this weekend because I thought that the racing was really competitive last year. It's another totally different style of race track for us to start of the year with, so I'm really curious to see how we're going to do, and I'm just ready to get back into the car and get to work this weekend." Matt Kenseth
"Bristol is a track where you've got to be on your game for 500 laps. It's a great race for both the fans and the drivers and its definitely one of my favorites." Dave Blaney
"Bristol has really changed over the years. I loved the old Bristol, but this is the new Bristol. You have to adapt to whatever the track is asking for. Another thing about Bristol is you have to protect your car and wait for the right opportunity to pass. You learn over the years when to make passes and when you can't. A misstep at Bristol could have a costly outcome. We've seen it many times. To contend for the win you want to be in position by Lap 350. That is definitely the 'Go Time' at Bristol. It will be our goal to be in that position with our Furniture Row/Beautyrest Chevrolet SS." Kurt Busch
