NASCAR Hall of Fame Inducts Fourth Class

On Friday night, the NASCAR Hall of Fame held their fourth induction ceremony in the Hall of Fame's ballroom.  It was an evening filled with speeches, presentations, historical vignettes, some crying and some laughter as the total membership of the institution increased to 20.

Inductees:
Buck Baker - NASCAR Grand National Champion, 1956-1957 (first back-to-back titlist), 46 career wins.  Induction accepted by widow, Susan while son Buddy (a former NASCAR racer himself, current SIRIUS analyst) also was in attendance for the ceremony.

Everett "Cotton" Owens - Nine-time Grand National Winner as a driver and winner of an unknown number of Modified races (believed to be in the hundreds), 38 victories as an owner, Grand National Champion car owner (1966, David Pearson), second-place finish in the Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, 1972 (with Brock Yates).  Induction accepted by grandson.

Herb Thomas - 1951 and 1953 Grand National champion, first multiple-time champion.  Induction accepted by son, Joel.

Rusty Wallace - 1989 Winston Cup Champion, winner of 55 races, won ten races in one season (1993).

Leonard Wood - Mechanical genius; Part of the Wood Brothers Racing team, helped revolutionize pit stops.

In addition, during the pre-show before the telecast, NASCAR officially unveiled the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence, an award for media members.  The award's namesakes, Ken Squier and Barney Hall, were presented with its inaugural edition on Friday night.

Ken Squier - Owner of the Thunder Road Speedbowl in Barre, Vermont, Squier also started out in radio before branching out into television in the 1970s.  His greatest achievement, though was convincing CBS to broadcast the 1979 Daytona 500 live, flag-to-flag, thus accelerating NASCAR's growth.  Play-by-play for that telecast, Squier then called Cup races on CBS and TBS from 1977-'97 (prior to 1979, CBS races were tape-delayed), then served in a hosting role until 2000.  Squier still periodically appears on SPEED, usually during Speedweeks.

Barney Hall - Known as the voice of NASCAR on MRN Radio, Hall has been a mainstay in NASCAR for over 50 years.  He was the original PA announcer at then-Bristol International Raceway in 1960, shortly after he called his first Daytona 500.  He has been with MRN Radio since it launched in 1970.

Kyle Larson To Compete in Nationwide Series Full-Time in 2013

Early Wednesday morning, Earnhardt Ganassi Racing announced that young gun Kyle Larson will race the full 33-race Nationwide Series schedule for Turner Scott Motorsports, driving the No. 32 Chevrolet Camaro. For Daytona, at least that car will be sponsored by Clorox. Since the No. 32 only ran one race in 2012 (with Miguel Paludo at Road America) Larson will have to get into the event on speed.

The move is an extension of last year's relationship between Earnhardt Ganassi Racing and then-Turner Motorsports that saw Larson drive a fourth entry (No. 4) in the Camping World Truck Series for four races. In those events, Larson ran very well, earning three top-10 finishes. He had chances to win at both Phoenix and Homestead before dropping back (at Homestead, this was due to a late crash).

Larson is very happy to be moving up to the Nationwide Series on a full-time basis.

"This is truly one of the happiest days of my life," Larson said. "I have been thinking about something like this since my very first days of racing. I am very proud to be part of Chip Ganassi's organization and to be running with Turner Scott Motorsports. Daytona cannot come fast enough for me."

Chip Ganassi is happy that Larson has been placed with a strong race team for 2013.

"We are pleased we were able to get Kyle in a quality, full-time ride for the 2013 Nationwide season," Ganassi said. "Turner Scott Motorsports runs a quality [Camping World] Truck and Nationwide program and Kyle is one of the true young talents in racing. We think it will be a good fit for both of them. We believe Kyle has a bright future ahead of him in NASCAR."

Last year, Larson had a very busy schedule of competition. In total, he competed in 123 races in various forms of motorsport, winning 30 times in machinery such as a K&N Pro Series car, a sprint car (winged and wingless), a Midget, a Silver Crown car, and a super late model. He walked away with the K&N Pro Series East Championship despite having never driven a stock car prior to last year.

Even with all of that success, including five wins already in 2013 in open-wheel racing, Larson will be making his Nationwide Series debut in Daytona. In addition, he will also compete in the Inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach, the combination K&N Pro Series East and West showdown on a temporary oval on Daytona International Speedway's backstretch measuring 2/5ths of mile prior to the Nationwide Series rolling out.

Piquet to Drive Full-Time in Nationwide Series in 2013

Rumors had been circulating for much of the past few months that Nelson Piquet, Jr. would be making the move up to the Nationwide Series from the Camping World Truck Series for the 2013 season.  However, no news had been announced throughout the offseason.

On Friday, Turner Scott Motorsports finally made it official, naming Piquet the full-time driver of its No. 30 Chevrolet Camaro. Sponsorship for Piquet's effort will come from longtime backers Qualcomm, Autotrac and TAG Heuer Eyewear.  In addition, Worx and Delevaco Capital, Inc. have joined the team as additional sponsors.  Chris Carrier, who served as Piquet's crew chief on the No. 30 Chevrolet Silverado in the Camping World Truck Series last year, will follow Piquet in his move up the ladder.

The Brazilian, who's already won a Nationwide race (Road America) appears ready and raring to go.

"I am very happy to be returning with Turner Scott Motorsports in 2013, and incredibly excited to be making the move to the NASCAR Nationwide Series," Piquet said.  "I said from the very beginning of my NASCAR career that I wanted to go about it the right way and progress through the ranks when the time was right; that I wouldn't rush. I feel that 2012 was a really fantastic season for me and it provided me with the opportunity to go to the next level. I'm very excited about the challenge of the Nationwide Series, and I know that I'm going to be doing it running for one of the best teams in the sport. I'm very grateful to Turner Scott Motorsports and our new partners that have come on board to make this full-time Nationwide season possible."

For the past four seasons, the No. 30 team (No. 10 up to 2010) has been a team with very little continuity.  Constant change has been the norm as typically no less than seven drivers have driven the car each season.  Last year, Camping World Truck Series Champion James Buescher drove the lion's share of the races and won the season opener at Daytona.  However, nine other drivers started at least one race in the car.  Piquet drove the No. 30 once last season, at Road America where he earned that victory by winning the pole and leading 19 laps.  With ten different drivers in the seat, the No. 30 finished the year 11th in owner points.

SR2 Motorsports Purchases MacDonald Motorsports, To Run Three Cars; Koch in No. 24 Full-Time

Last Monday, SR2 Motorsports announced that they have acquired the assets of the former MacDonald Motorsports team.  As a result of the deal, SR2 Motorsports has acquired the cars and equipment from the former No. 81, in addition to their owner points.  The team plans to race three Toyotas full-time in the Nationwide Series in 2013, using the Nos. 00, 24 and a currently unknown third number.

Team owner Jason Sciavicco is happy to announce the changes, transforming his relatively small operation in a very short period of time.

"We couldn't be more thrilled about our expansion this season," Sciavicco said.  "We came from a humble, yet strategic, start just one year ago. We started our season with one car and finished 12th in Daytona after qualifying on speed into the event. The rest of the season we took our time to grow and now we're in the position today to announce a three-car operation in only our second season.  At the end of the season we felt we could finally see our growth in our performance.  We feel that we have strong cars, tremendous support from Toyota and great people heading into 2013. As we finalize our drivers and partners, I think the capabilities are here for SR² Motorsports to be strong contenders each week."

On Thursday, the team announced Blake Koch as the first of their confirmed drivers for the 2013 season.  Koch will campaign the No. 24 Toyota full-time with sponsorship to be determined.

"I'm really excited to be teaming with SR² Motorsports for the 2013 season," said the driver.  "Our team chemistry is solid. In the races we competed in last season, we worked well together and developed a good understanding of how our race cars need to be set up. We have great note packages to build on from last year, which have laid a good foundation for this year. We grew leaps and bounds last season and I'm optimistic that we'll continue that this year."

After a rookie season that saw Koch battle tooth-and-nail with Rick Ware Racing's Timmy Hill all season for the Rookie of the Year title, an award he just missed out on at Homestead, 2012 was a major step back.  Originally signed to partner with Hill at RWR, Koch's season fell apart after ESPN controversially refused to air commercials for sponsor RiseUpAndRegister.com, claiming that the website openly supported pro-life viewpoints that the network didn't want to associate with.  With the series' exclusive TV outlet refusing to let them advertise, they left the team, leaving Koch without a backer.  Several early exits followed.  Koch started 23 races in 2012, but only finished six of them.  He made nine starts for SR2 Motorsports, eight in the start-and-park No. 00, and one (Dover, September) in the No. 24, where he finished 22nd.

Prepped to run the distance this time, Koch will have Benny Gordon on the pit box in a dual role.  He'll serve as Koch's crew chief and the team's General Manager.  Last year, Gordon split time between driving and crew chiefing the No. 24, while also serving as a driver coach for some of SR2 Motorsports' younger wheelmen during the season.  Look for the team to make additional driver, crew chief and sponsor announcements over the next week or so.

News Bites

- Reed Sorenson has signed a deal to drive the No. 40 Chevrolet for Team Motorsport Group for the full 2013 season in the Nationwide Series.  The team has existed for the past year off of the revenue raised by the team's three start-and-park entries, but the No. 40 is the team's primary car.  Sorenson will replace Erik Darnell.

- Front Row Motorsports announced on Saturday that they have signed Love's Travel Stops to serve as the primary sponsor of David Gilliland's No. 38 Ford Fusion in the Daytona 500.  In addition, their colors will be on David Ragan's No. 34 at Texas in April, along with one other race to be determined.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q:
Recently, Mark Thompson has raced part-time in ARCA for Venturini Motorsports.  Back in the 1990s, though, Thompson drove on a full-time basis and was a threat to win on a regular basis despite a near career-ending moment at Daytona in 1994.  What happened that day?

Last Monday's Answer:
Q.
In 1998, Kenny Irwin, Jr. won the ARCA FirstPlus Financial 200 at Daytona International Speedway in what turned out to be his only career start in the series.  Where did the car he was driving come from?

A. Irwin drove a Raybestos-sponsored No. 27 Ford Thunderbird in the 200-mile ARCA race (the Ford Taurus was not yet approved for ARCA competition and would not show up in the series for another couple of months).  The car was a former Dale Jarrett No. 88 Quality Care Ford and carried the paint scheme that Jarrett was using at that time.  Raybestos Brakes was an associate sponsor with Robert Yates Racing at the time as well.
