Patrick to Help Raise Money For Veterans, Appear in Two Super Bowl Commercials

Danica Patrick's No. 10 Go Daddy Chevrolet will be driving in the Sprint Cup race Sunday at Phoenix with a bigger purpose. At an announcement in Phoenix Thursday, Patrick and godaddy.com founder Bob Parsons announced that his foundation would match up to $1 million for the Semper Fi Fund that will help ill and wounded military members.

Parsons, who sold GoDaddy.com for about $2 billion last year, also announced that Patrick will be appearing in two GoDaddy.com Super Bowl commercials in 2013. There had been speculation last month that Patrick would not appear in the company's Super Bowl commercials when the company hired a new ad agency earlier this year. Patrick has starred in 10 Super Bowl commercials, more than any other celebrity. She has appeared in 22 GoDaddy.com commercials over the years. Parsons said there was never any doubt that Patrick would be in the Super Bowl commercials.

Also Thursday, Stewart-Haas Racing co-owner and driver Tony Stewart  announced at the press conference that the team would be donating $50,000 to the Semper Fi Fund.  Patrick's Nationwide and Sprint Cup cars will both feature the logo this weekend.

"We are taking fundraising to support injured members of our military to an all-new level," said Parsons, a decorated Marine who served in Vietnam. "We're making it insanely simple for people to help this vitally important organization."

Donations can be made through Go Daddy's Round Up for Charity program, where customers round up their purchase to the next dollar. Donations can also be made directly by going to GoDaddy.com and clicking on Go Daddy's 8th annual U.S Marine Corp Birthday Salute.

In related news, it was announced Wednesday that Stewart-Haas driver Ryan Newman would have a special paint scheme to pay tribute to veterans, including the words, "Home of the Free Because of the Brave."

Pennzoil, Penske Combine to Donate Three Cars to Paralyzed Veterans

Pennzoil in conjunction with Penske Racing announced Thursday that it will donate three Dodge cars to three paralyzed veterans as part of the Long Love Cars campaign. The three veterans were chosen as part of a contest that asked veterans to describe their favorite memory in a car, why they would need the vehicle Pennzoil would build for them and where they would first travel to in their new vehicle.

The field was narrowed to six finalists before the winners were chosen.  The three winners were voted on at paralyzed veterans website and the contest received over 10,000 votes.

The veterans will be presented with their custom-made vehicles at Phoenix International Raceway before Sunday's Sprint Cup race. Team owner Roger Penske as well as drivers Brad Keselowski and Sam Hornish, Jr.  are also scheduled to be in attendance for the ceremony.

Keselowski and his No. 2 Dodge enter Sunday's penultimate race of the season second in the points standings, seven markers behind leader Jimmie Johnson.

CWTS Crew Chief Charles Henry Suspended Indefinitely

NASCAR announced Thursday that it has suspended Charles Henry, crew chief for the No. 38 RSS Racing Chevrolet in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Henry was suspended for violating the sport's substance abuse policy on November 7th.

The No. 38 Chevrolet has made just 12 starts this year with Dennis Setzer and Chris Jones sharing the time behind the wheel. The team has chosen to start-and-park in each race they've entered, completing the most laps (19) at Charlotte in May.

Carl Edwards to Make 300th Career Start

This weekend at Phoenix International Raceway, Carl Edwards will become the 80th Sprint Cup Series driver to make his 300th start in NASCAR's top series. In 299 races to date, Edwards boasts 19 wins, 92 top 5s and 157 top-10 finishes.

"My first start on pavement was at Phoenix in 2001 so it's neat to be starting my 200th Sprint Cup Series start there. I cannot thank Jack Roush, everyone at Ford and all the people who believed in me enough, and gave me this opportunity to run all these races," Edwards said. "I've learned a lot and hopefully the next 300 races include a bunch of wins and championships. That's our mission right now. This is a milestone and a reminder of how far we've come, how much we've learned and how much we've got to look forward to in the future."

In 34 starts this season, Edwards has just three top 5s and 13 top-10 results. He hasn't been to victory lane since Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March, 2011.

John King Returns to Wauters Motorsports

John King returns to the Camping World Truck Series this weekend behind the wheel of the No. 5 Wauters Motorsports Ford. It marks his second start with the team after being released from Red Horse Racing earlier this season.

"First off, I'm really excited to be back with Richie (Wauters) and his team. They've got some awesome Ford F-150 race trucks and have the knowledge that's needed to make them go fast at the track," King said. "This will be my first time to Phoenix as a driver. I feel like Phoenix will related to what I have raced in the past--dirt late models and late model stocks--being as it's fairly flat and races more like a short track. I know also that whatever I lack in knowledge of the track as a driver, the team will be able to offset with their knowledge."

King drove the No. 5 Ford at Kentucky in September. He started 24th and ran just 53 laps before being involved in the fifth caution; he was credited with a 25th-place finish.

Keepin' It Short: The War Between the States Wages On
by Mike Neff

It has been nearly 150 years since the American Civil War came to an end. While most people have come to accept that outcome, there are still those that hang onto the animosity on some level, and the North-South Shootout brings that to the surface every racing season. This weekend, at Caraway Speedway, some of the best drivers in the North and the South will take to the track to settle the score once again in seven different divisions. Lite Modifieds, SK Modifieds, Tour Modifieds, Sportsman, Legends, Super Trucks and Super Late Models will all do battle on the 0.455-mile oval in feature races on Saturday night in the Colors Edge John Blewett III North-South Shootout presented by PPG.

The North-South Shootout was held at Concord Speedway for the first eight years of its existence, but last year it moved to Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, NC. There have been many incarnations of the North-South, but they have always been centered around the Tour Modifieds. The first year it was run, John Blewett, III took the win. He backed that up in 2005 with a second victory. Two years later he was killed in an accident at Thompson Speedway in Connecticut. The race has carried his name since 2007 and honors his legacy as a racer's racer who did it all from sweeping the floors to setting up the race car.

Between the years that Blewett won the North-South, Donny Lia came to Concord and took the trophy. In the first John Blewett, III memorial race, it was Matt Hirschman who scored the win, and in 2008 he became the first back-to-back winner. He went back-to-back again in 2010 and 2011 to establish himself as the only four-time winner of the race. Between Hirschman's two back-to-back wins, Burt Myers grabbed the big fake check in the racing Civil War.

This season's race marks the first time the PASS Super Late Models will be on the docket for the event. The Modified feature will be 125 laps while the PASS Super Late Models will make 150 circuits around the track. The first race of the night will be the SK Modifieds running 50 laps. Legends cars will follow the Sks for 25 laps of heated racing. The feature race of the night, the Tour Type Modifieds will be up next with their 125 laps of battling. Super Late Model Trucks will run 75 laps next before the Super Late Models take to the track for their feature. The lite modifeds will make 40 laps in anger before the Sportsmen finish up the night with 40 laps of their own.

Seven feature races for one ticket price will be hard to beat. Two feature races of over 100 laps is a rare deal indeed. If you're in the Carolinas this weekend, make the trip to Asheboro to check out a good old fashioned Civil War contested on a half-mile race track.

The race can also be heard on your local MRN affiliate or SiriusXM Channel 90. Drivers will compete for 312 laps (312 miles / 500 km).

Records and Facts

Carl Edwards hold the track record for fastest qualifying lap with a speed of 137.279 mph set on February 26, 2011 for the Subway Fresh Fit 500. Edwards led just 17 laps before being caught up in a chain reaction crash that brought out the fourth caution. He was left to settle for a 28th-place finish, 59 laps off the pace. Jeff Gordon took the checkered flag 1.137 seconds ahead of Kyle Busch; both made minor contact in the incident that took Edwards out of contention. Jimmie Johnson, Kevin harvick and Ryan Newman rounded out the top 5.

Kasey Kahne is the defending winner of this race. After starting tenth, the then-driver of the No. 4 Red Bull Racing Toyota led the final 14 laps en route to his only victory in 2011. Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Jeff Burton and Ryan Newman rounded out the top 5.

They Said It

"Phoenix is a pretty near place, even though they made some changes with the repave last year. For some reason, I've always run well there. You've got to have a good car, but you've got to have good brakes. You've got to have a good-turning car, and you've got to have a good car that can accelerate off of turn two and go fast down the backstretch. There's a lot involved at Phoenix, but being only the third race on the new surface, it could make it interesting." Kyle Busch

"I'm feeling pretty optimistic about Phoenix. It was where I made my first start with BK Racing at the beginning of the season. I like the track now that they've changed it a little bit. It's a little wider, a little racier. It's a little faster too. It's a fun track, but it's still only a mile, so you still have a short-track mentality when you race there." Travis Kvapil

"In the spring our car was faster on two tires than it was on four tires. Our weakness was the restarts and getting grip, but we were better on the restart with grip on two tires than we were on four. They did a great job of getting the track prepared and I think both races we've run there so far were really good races. The race track really widened out as we went through the races, the groove widened out a lot. They took the fans into consideration and everybody can see what's going on around the race track. Kevin Harvick

Fantasy Friday: AdvoCare 500
by Jeff Wolfe

It's week nine of the Chase, the next to last race of the year, as the Sprint Cup series heads to Phoeni. Of course, we all will be watching what points leader Jimmie Johnson and second-place Brad Keselowski do. Johnson has a seven-point lead going in and while Keselowski doesn't have to have a huge day, if he gains three or four points on the leader, that will set things up nicely for Homestead-Miami next week. However, if Keselowski loses, say even seven or eight points, he'll be in a tough spot to try and catch the five-time champion.

As for this Sunday, it would be a surprise if each Johnson and Keselowski were not on the top of their games. So, no matter what past history is telling us, they're each must picks this week.

Top 5 Picks

1. Jimmie Johnson.
It's true he hasn't won in the last five races at Phoenix, but he does have four top-5 finishes in those races and has led 187 laps. That may be bad news for Keselowski, because if a driver is leading that many laps and finishing that well at a track, that usually means a win is not too far away.

 2. Brad Keselowski. Here we go again, ignoring so many of his past performances at Phoenix. The driver of the No. 2 Dodge has an average finish of 19.2 in his last five races there, but that doesn't mean there is no hope. Keselowski finished fifth in the spring race there and with so much on the line now, it's hard to imagine this team not being prepared for every scenario this week.

3. Denny Hamlin. After being a contender for the title until two races ago, he's been reduced to spoiler status now. Last week's performance at Texas, where he finished 20th, was a little disturbing because he has been so good there in the past and was never a factor Sunday. We'll give him one more chance this week as he has led 260 laps in the last five races at Phoenix, including one win.

4. Tony Stewart. He showed he was still giving his best all the way to the end with last week's fifth-place finish at Texas. And while it isn't a big issue, he probably would like to finish ahead of Hamlin and former crew chief Darian Grubb, just so he can say he had a better season with his hiring of this year's crew chief Steve Addington. While Stewart hasn't won in the last five races at Phoenix, he is second to Hamlin with 243 laps led in those races.

5. Kyle  Busch. The No. 18 team has had its frustrations this year for sure, including missing the Chase. But what I like about the team is that it continues to go out and compete and try to win races. Busch has led 194 laps in the last five trips to Phoenix, so based on that and his recent contention in races, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in Victory Lane Sunday night.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda: Jeff Gordon. He got off on the wrong foot to start the Chase when his throttle stuck at Chicagoland, costing him what would have been at least a top-10 finish.  But Gordon has been a contender in several races since then and he does have a win in his last five races at Phoenix.

ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP
Here's a look at how last week's picks fared in Week 8 of the Chase at Texas.

Jimmie Johnson - 1st.
The five-time champion displayed his poise and patience, using the final restart to get the edge and race right into victory lane.

Brad Keselowski - 2nd.
He was a contender to win at a track where he had traditionally struggled. That's a good sign for this team in the last two races.

Denny Hamlin - 20th. His recent and long-term history at Texas has been outstanding, so this finish was a real headscratcher.

Matt Kenseth - 4th. For once, not a win or 30 plus finish for the Kenseth. He's had a nice rebound since a poor start in the Chase.

Greg Biffle - 10th. He has been traditionally strong at Texas, and while this was certainly no disaster, it was a bit of surprise that he didn't contend for the win.

Season Stats

170 Predictions
17 Wins
54 Top 5s
81 Top 10s

Grade for the week: A-. That's a winner two weeks in a row thanks to Johnson, and Keselowski came through even though he had not been good at Texas. Picking three of the top 5, and four of the top 10 is a pretty good day.

One last thing: Keselowski is trying to become the first Dodge driver to win a title since Richard Petty in 1975.

Thursday's Answer:

Q: For Ricky Craven, Phoenix in 1997 was incredibly frustrating.  It was a struggle for him just to make the race, then his day ended before Lap 50.  What happened?

A: Craven was first forced way up high exiting Turn 2, where he hit outside wall and almost wiped out one of TNN's cameras in the process.  Shortly afterwards, Craven spun and hit the wall in Turns 3 and 4.  Unfortunately, there is no footage of the crash, but Craven was very angry after the crash and was convinced that someone (he didn't name names in his interview) took him out.
