Brunnhoelzl Wins UNOH Southern Slam 150
by Mike Neff

The Modifieds were born in the South and perfected in the Northeast, Rome New York to be exact. While the Northeast is the hotbed of Modified racing, it has secured a strong following in the South as well, and the Southern Modified Tour allows some of the best Modified drivers in the South the opportunity to show off their skills throughout the region.

Thursday night at Charlotte, the Southern Modified Tour culminated their season with the UNOH Southern Slam 150. George Brunnhoelzl, III completed his march to an unprecedented third Southern Modified Tour Championship by qualifying with a new track record to start on the pole and then led all 150 laps on his way to the victory. The win cemented Brunnhoelzl as the first three-time winner in the series' brief history. Brunnhoelzl beat Ryan Preece to the line by 1.812 seconds. Preece was followed in the finishing order by Burt Myers, Danny Bohn and Andy Seuss.

The race was slowed by five caution periods that lasted a total of 19 laps. The race lasted 50 minutes and 53 seconds. 13 of the 20 cars finished on the lead lap. Danny Bohn not only finished fourth in the event but locked up the Rookie of the Year title and passed Jason Myers for second in the final season point standings. The second half of the top included Kyle Ebersole, Ted Christopher, Frank Fleming, Jason Myers and Gary Putnam.

Brunnhoelzl's season started off with a bang, winning five of the first seven races  on the Southern Tour Schedule. Brian Lofton and Brandon Ward were the only drivers to interrupt Brunnhoelzl's dominance in the first six months of the season. Brunnhoelzl went into a bit of a slump starting at Langley in September, finishing tenth, eighth and tenth in three consecutive races. Brunnhoelzl came into the race with a 43-point lead on Jason Myers. Once he took the green flag in the race he knew he was the Southern Tour Champion, but he wanted to end on a high note. He did so by leading every lap to secure his sixth victory out of 11 races  on the season.

Jason Myers was a lap down at one point in the race but brought his car back to a ninth-place finish. Unfortunately for Myers that was three spots too far behind Danny Bohn who jumped over Myers to come home second in series points for the year. Myers did hold on for third ahead of Tim Brown and Andy Seuss, who rounded out the top five in Southern Modified Tour Points. The tour will pick up again next Spring for its ninth year of competition.

Lny-Z Pastrana Wins Better Half Dash
by Mike Neff

The Better Half Dash version two is in the books and Travis Pastrana now has another incentive to win a race in a stock car. His wife Lyn-Z took care of business and scored the win Thursday night.

"This is my third time in a car. The first time was an off-road buggy, the second time was two laps in a restrictor plate celebrity race and then this car," Pastrana said. "I was so nervous I don't think I could do more than one year. I was white knuckled the whole time, sweat dripping down my visor. (Travis) was calming me down the whole time."

Travis served as Lyn-Z's spotter during the race.

"It was so fun," she said. "We don't do that well when we're teaching each other stuff, but this was something that we really clicked on. I never yelled at him once, and he never got mad at me, so it was good."

The race was slowed by several caution flags, including a large fracas that saw Andriene Pattie go for a tumble over the 00 of Kristen Yeley and end up on her side. Ashley Allgaier's race ended early when she incurred damage in the same incident that rendered her car uncompetitive. Pastrana beat Jacquelyn Butler to the line by 1.618 seconds to take the win. Wendy Venturini crossed the line in third place 3.848 seconds behind Pastrana. Kristen Yeley rebounded from that early incident to come home in fourth while Angie Dilner rounded out the top 5.

12 cars started the race with Allgaier and Pattie falling out after 10 laps and Katrina Childers and Melanie Self each ending up one lap down in ninth and tenth. Patricia Driscoll came home in eighth behind Michelle Gilliland. Amy Gordon was the first car in the second half of the top 10, coming home in sixth.

The Better Half Dash is a charity race with the proceeds going to the Speedway Children's Charities. This year's event raised $25,000 for the foundation.

Glory Foods Pits Teammate Against Teammate For a Cause at Charlotte

Glory Foods has sponsored David Ragan in Four races this year, but now the company is upping the ante. If either Ragan or teammate David Gilliland can win the Bank of America 500 on Saturday night, the company, which manufactures a variety of food items sold in grocery stores, will donate a million dollars to Feeding America, the largest domestic hunger relief program in the country.

One in six children in America go hungry, according to Feed America. The agency works with various programs to help families in need. Gilliland says that as a father, the number of children who go without food hits home. "This means the world to me, you know, as a father of two children. A staggering one in six children go to bed hungry, which is incredible. Just being a part of the Feeding America campaign is very special. Hopefully David or I can win and bring that million dollars to Feed America. We are excited to bring awareness and get people to the website."

Earlier this year, Ragan and Gilland helped pass out food items at Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte, while Glory Foods pitched in by donating 43,000 pounds of food.

"When you learn the facts, this affects a lot of kids and families around here," said Ragan. "We made a donation to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina here a while back and Glory Foods donated a lot of canned goods. A lot of fans have been impacted by this."

Regardless of whether Gilliland or Ragan can pull off the win on Saturday night, Glory Foods has pledged $50,000 to Feeding America to help the agency meet it's goal of providing 500,000 meals by the end of the year.

Biffle Wins Pole With Record Lap

Greg Biffle took the pole for Saturday night's Bank of America with a track record lap of 27.877 seconds, or 193.708 miles per hour, beating Mark Martin by just five hundredths of a second for the top spot. Martin, Ryan Newman, Clint Bowyer, and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the top 5.

Chase drivers are spread from Biffle on the pole back to Tony Stewart in 32nd spot. Other Chasers outside the top 5 include Martin Truex, Jr. (6th), Matt Kenseth (7th), Denny Hamlin (9th), Kasey Kahne (10th), Kevin Harvick (11th), Jeff Gordon (13th), and Brad Keselowski (22nd). The No. 88, with Regan Smith subbing for an injured Dale Earnhardt, Jr., will start 26th.

The previous track record of 193.216 MPH was set by Elliott Sadler in October 2005. Martin and Newman also beat that time on their runs.

Baby Born at New Hampshire Motor Speedway Dies

According to a report from the New Hampshire Union Leader, the baby born at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last month has died. Katie Ann Herbert, who, was born in the parking lot of the speedway when her mother went into labor before reaching the hospital, was three weeks old.

Laconia, N.H., Police Captain Matt Canfield said the child was pronounced dead early Monday morning at Lakes Region General Hospital where she was taken by ambulance after she was found not breathing at home.

Canfield said police and emergency personnel responded to a call at about 11:45 PM Sunday to the apartment where Katie lived with her mother. Resuscitation efforts in the ambulance and the hospital were unsuccessful.

"We are investigating as we would any untimely death, especially a child," Canfield said. "However, we do not have reason to believe anything suspicious about it."

Canfield there was nothing suspicious or abnormal and the cause of death remained unclear. Toxicology tests are expected to take 6-8 weeks to process. The baby was born Sept. 14 at the Loudon track when her parents were on the way to Concord Hospital. Katie was four pounds, 12 ounces when she was born last month and suffered fluid on her lungs, requiring extra oxygen when she arrived at the hospital.

Sprint in Talks With Softbank

According to a report by the Associated Press Thursday, Sprint Nextel Corp. is in talks with the Japanese cell phone company Softbank about making a substantial investment in the U.S. Company.

Sprint, the third-largest cellphone company in the U.S., said the transaction could be big enough to change control of the company, but no other details were provided. It's unclear how or if a change of control would affect Sprint's sponsorship deal in NASCAR. Sprint is the parent sponsor of NASCAR's top series.

The Wall Street Journal reported that a transaction would give the Japan company a presence in the U.S. and could be worth $12.8 billion.

The news of the deal sent Sprint shares up 66 cents to $5.70 by midday. Also, Clearwire Corp., which Sprint owns half of, saw its shares jump 43 cents to $1.70.
Tokyo-based Softbank was once the underdog in the Japan cell phone industry, but began selling the iPhone in 2008 and was originally the lone Japanese company to do so. Softbank rival KDDI Corp. began selling the iPhone last year in Japan.

Keepin' It Short: The Season of Big Races Continues
by Mike Neff

The season of big races continues to roll on this weekend as the 41st Annual Winchester 400 takes place at Winchester Speedway in Eastern Indiana. The world's fastest half-mile (and they have the video on the web site to prove it) will again play host to some of the best Super Late Model drivers in the country as the CRA Super Series sanctions the event. In addition to the normal contenders on the CRA Super tour, there will be some big name drivers rolling in to try and etch their names in the history books as winners of this prestigious event.

This event has been held every year--except 2004 and 2005--since 1970. Bob Senneker is the unquestioned king of the event, having notched seven victories in the 37 previous runnings of the race, including five straight from 1974 through 1978. Several well-known stock car drivers have engraved their names on the Winchester 400 trophy over the years. The list includes Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Ted Musgrave, David Stremme and Kyle Busch. Future star Chase Elliott score the prestigious win in 2010 while Boris Jurkovic was the first one to the checkered flag in 2011.

The 2012 event promises to be another barn burner of a race with the likes of Busch, Elliott, Jurkovic, recent Winchester winner Johnny Van Doorn, Legends Million winner Daniel Hemric and All-American 400 winner Ross Kenseth all entered. 44 cars had submitted entries as of Monday October 8th. The winner of this year's event is guaranteed $15,000 for the win and it could reach as high as $26,500 with lap leader money and bonuses. The winner of the race also receives a Winchester rifle which is probably the most prized part of scoring the win.

Winchester Speedway is located in Eastern Indiana, just north of Richmond. It is a half-mile, asphalt track with 36 degrees of banking in the turns, 12 degrees on the back straight and 9 degrees on the front straight. The tremendously steep banking and raciness of the surface is part of the attraction of the historic venue. The track was constructed in 1914 and has been continuously running since then. It was the first half-mile facility built in this country specifically for auto racing. The facility has increased its seating capacity over the years and now seats 5,000 people. It has hosted races for most every major sanctioning body in the United States at some point. Camping is a popular pastime among race fans, especially for the 400 weekend. It is on a first come first served basis and costs a mere $20.

The racing schedule for 2012 has included CRA, ARCA, JEG's and Xtreme events. With NASCAR talking about going back to the short tracks with the Truck series Winchester is certainly hopeful that they might be able to entice the biggest sanctioning body in the country to come to Eastern Indiana.

If you're anywhere near the Midwest this weekend you'd be well served to make the trip east of Indianapolis to take in the sights and sounds of Winchester Speedway. There aren't too many tracks left that can boast of having had a Cup race and a Midget race both contested on their surface but Winchester is among them.

Say What?!?

"I think our FedEx team is in pretty good shape. Obviously, we gave a few points away at Chicago and Dover, but we're still in striking distance. We were able to avoid trouble at Talladega and get a decent finish, and I think we have a good shot of competing for the win almost everywhere we go from here on out. We have wins at five of the last six tracks, and finished second at Charlotte earlier this year. Hopefully we can do one spot better than that Saturday night." -Denny Hamlin

"It always seems like it's a battle of trying to get your car to cut through the center of the corner and keep the forward drive in it. It seems like it's a sacrifice of one or the other, but the two ends of the track are different. It seems like you can carry a lot more speed through (turns) one and two, and (turns) three and four are a little more thread-the-needle-type corners. Sometimes there isn't a big difference between the fall and spring races at Charlotte. They're spread out so far and they're at the beginning of summer and the end of summer, so a lot of times they can be very similar." -Tony Stewart

"I've had really good racecars [at Charlotte]. I've had really bad racecars. I've had good racecars that have gone bad and bad racecars that have gone good, but I've just never been the one to cross the start-finish line first. I won the All-Star Race in 2002, and I've been fairly close to winning at Charlotte in a points race before. I've had some fast racecars at Charlotte and, at the end of the race, I've just fallen short. For me, my All-Star Race win at Charlotte during my rookie season in 2002 was really special because that was the race we weren't expected to win. I was a rookie. We weren't even in the race to begin with, but we raced our way in that night. And we beat everybody at the home field on a given night and we did it because of the pride and the money, not because of the points, and there's a lot to be said about that. So, to me, a win at Charlotte would mean the world." -Ryan Newman

Fantasy Friday: Bank of America 500
by Jeff Wolfe

It's Week 5 of the Chase, and really, the same guys who were on top going into Talladega are on top going into Charlotte. This is generally not considered a shakeup-the-standings kind of race, but if we look at the recent history of Chase drivers at Charlotte, it could provide a bit of a shuffle. With that in mind, here are this week's picks.

Top 5 Picks

1. Kyle Busch. Of course. we know he's a non-Chaser, but he's led 474 laps in the last five races at Charlotte. And even though he hasn't won any of those, he has four top-5 finishes in those races. The luck has got to change sometime and it could be Saturday night.

2. Kasey Kahne. He's on the fringe here, at 36 points behind Keselowski for the lead. Charlotte has been a good track for him and has a win, a top 5 and a top 10 in the last five starts at Charlotte. It could be his best chance to become a legitimate contender for the title.

3. Matt Kenseth.
He's got a win, a top 5 and three top 10s in the last five races here. Sure, he's in 12th in the Chase and 62 points out, so he's got nothing to go for but the win here.

4. Kevin Harvick. He has an average finish of 6.8 in the last five races here, including a win. And he has yet to win this year, so he is due.

5. Jeff Gordon. Fans of the No. 24 driver are saying if that throttle hadn't stuck at Chicago he'd be right in the Chase picture and they'd be right. He does have five career wins at the track and with his back-to-back second-place finishes in the last two weeks, maybe a win is in the cards here.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda: Jimmie Johnson. It's always dangerous to not pick Johnson at this track. He's got six career wins at Charlotte, but in the last five races he has an average finish of  22.6, not exactly the type of numbers you'd expect from the five-time champion.

ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP
Here's a look at how last week's picks fared in Week 4 of the Chase at Talladega.

Kevin Harvick - 11th. He was in the mix up front in the later stages and avoided the big one at the end for an OK finish.

Clint Bowyer - 23rd. He was contending for the win until his No. 15 Toyota crashed the scene with Tony Stewart's No. 14 Chevy.

Brad Keselowski - 7th. The points leader did what eventual champions do at Talladega ... avoid the big one.

Tony Stewart - 22nd. Being a second late on the blocking tactic while in the lead on the last lap at Talladega cost him a potential win and likely any shot at second straight Sprint Cup title.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. - 20th. Was trying to push his way to the front when he was swallowed up by the Big One.

Season Stats

150 Predictions
15  Wins
48 Top 5s
69 Top 10s

Grade for the week: C-. Only giving this grade because it was Talladega and really, no one knows what will happen there.

One last thing: The only non-Chase driver to win a Charlotte Chase race is Jamie McMurray in 2010.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
The 2000 UAW-GM Quality 500 at then-Lowe's Motor Speedway was an excellent race. Bobby Labonte won a race that had 46 lead changes. However, broadcaster Turner Sports introduced a new innovation that day for the race telecast. What was it?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: In 1988, the late Rob Moroso defeated a pack of Winston Cup regulars to win the All Pro 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. However, for Cup regular Morgan Shepherd, his race barely got started before he was out. What happened?

A: For lack of better words, Shepherd got himself caught up in a mess in the quad-oval. It's unclear, but apparently Shepherd slowed suddenly and got hit from behind by Joe Millikan in the Thomas Brothers Country Ham No. 00 Oldsmobile. From there, the smoke screen was up and it was every man (and woman) for themselves. Randy LaJoie, Patty Moise, Jimmy Spencer, Bobby Labonte and others were collected. The crash can be seen at the 8:00 mark of this clip. Labonte, Millikan and Shepherd were out on the spot. LaJoie made repairs but eventually dropped out. Spencer finished 29th, 60 laps down after repairs. Moise, whose Crisco Buick Lesabre was smoking heavily after the wreck, finished six laps down in 19th.
