Today's Big News: 2013 Car To Be Tested At Talladega

Some of the sport's best drivers will be shaking down a new-look chassis for next season today at Talladega. Just over a half-dozen participants from Ford, Chevy, and Toyota will be working on the new body styles in a test that could reveal how these new cars will handle in the restrictor plate draft next season. Each manufacturer has brought at least two drivers in hopes they can test the tandem style, among other "checklist items" as the sport moves closer to implementation of their major car changes for 2013.

The test, run from 12:00 - 5:30 EST is open to the public at the Speedway. Here's a quick look at the participants:

Ford: No. 17 - Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., No. 22 - Sam Hornish, Jr.
Chevy: No. 5 - Kasey Kahne, No. 31 - Jeff Burton, No. 42 - Juan Pablo Montoya
Toyota: No. 20 - Joey Logano, No. 55 - Brian Vickers

PIR to Host First NASCAR Mexico Series Race in the United States

NASCAR racing south of the border will be dipping its toes up north, starting next year. Phoenix International Raceway President Bryan R. Sperber, along with NASCAR and OCESA signed an agreement Tuesday to allow PIR the honor of hosting the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series in its United States debut.

The event is planned for Friday, March 1, just days before the Sprint Cup Series gets set to run the SUBWAY Fresh 500 at the one-mile track.

"This is a truly significant day in the history of Phoenix International Raceway, we are both humbled and excited to play host to the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series' first race in the United States," said Sperber. "We look forward to welcoming the Series' great drivers, teams and fans to Phoenix and eagerly anticipate a great event."

"NASCAR is proud to make this historic announcement with Phoenix International Raceway and OCESA. It represents the next step in the growth of the sport and the international impact NASCAR is making.  This is a terrific opportunity to expose our fans in the United States to our exciting series from Mexico and continue to help the series and its impressive array of drivers reach new fans," said Brian France, NASCAR CEO and Chairman.

The series' American debut comes in only its 10th year in existence and seventh as one associated with NASCAR.  With the sanctioning body's help, the series has quickly risen to become the most prestigious racing body based in Mexico.

"After 10 years of tremendous efforts, NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series has achieved a points race in the U.S. market," said Federico Alaman, Managing Director of the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series. "All of our competitors, series officials and partners are delighted to showcase our sport at a venue as prestigious as Phoenix International Raceway and bring the NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series to an American audience."

The historic event will consist of an opening 50-lap segment followed by an additional 25-lap sprint to the finish. Top drivers such as 2012 points leader Daniel Suarez and road ringer Jorge Goeters will be among those expected on the entry list for the American event.

Keselowski Finds New Use for World's Largest HDTV

Brad Keselowski didn't fare well Tuesday in his virtual Bank of America 500 debut broadcast on Charlotte Motor Speedway's state-of-the-art infield HDTV.  After meeting his challenger, an 18-year-old Charlotte resident named Josh Bralley, the Sprint Cup star promptly crashed out of the race played using Activision's new video game "NASCAR The Game: Inside Line."

Bralley gained the opportunity to battle against the current Chase points leader by winning a knockout tournament in which players raced each other in the CMS event.  The University of North Carolina at Charlotte freshman received a VIP, Bank of America 500 prize package after winning the competition and will serve as an honorary Pit Crew Member for Keselowski's No. 2 Dodge during the Oct. 13 race.

"I feel like I'm living every 28-year-old's dream today," Keselowski said. "This is the first thing I thought about when I saw this giant TV was how we can play video games on it."

Despite the accident, Keselowski is confident that his team is capable of contending for the victory when the Sprint Cup Series visits Charlotte next week.

"The cars are strong.  The execution on pit road has been good," Keselowski said of his team's recent performances. "That's what it takes in the sport right now to be successful. It takes that combination. Just having one of those pieces is not enough. You have to have them all. Just missing one of those pieces will keep you from having a solid day."

The driver currently sits atop the standings, just five points ahead of Jimmie Johnson, with seven races remaining on the schedule.

Miller Lite Infield Track Bar Returns To Talladega

The Miller Lite Infield Track Bar, a popular venue for fans inside Talladega Superspeedway, will make its return for the Good Sam Roadside Assistance 500 this weekend.  Visitors will have access to the largest selection of alcoholic beverages trackside. The bar will also feature an increased number of televisions from years past, an addition which will showcase the weekend's best racing and football action.

"One of the highlights of race weekend at Talladega Superspeedway has to be the Miller Lite Infield Track Bar," said track Chairman Grant Lynch.  "The bar is open late and provides a great atmosphere for fans to hang out and watch their favorite football teams duke it out.  At the Miller Lite Infield Track Bar fans don't have to miss a minute of the action on the track or the gridiron."

The Miller Lite Infield Track Bar is located in its familiar spot, at the intersection of Talladega and Eastaboga Boulevards and is open until 2 AM Friday through Sunday.

News Bites

- Ryan Newman isn't too upset about potentially losing crew chief Tony Gibson and his No. 39 crew to Danica Patrick next season. "I think a lot of (Gibson) as a person," he told the Sporting News, among others Tuesday. "We've had success on the racetrack and we've struggled on the racetrack..." SHR has yet to make a final decision on the move.

 - NASCAR's Chase suffered through another disappointing week of ratings. Dover, the third of ten postseason events registered just a 2.2 in the Nielsens, with 3.581 million viewers tuning in. That's down 13 percent from a year ago and, even worse is the lowest TV audience for the event since it was broadcast on TNT way back in 2002. Overall, the Chase has had two straight 2.2 ratings, with total viewership, on average the lowest number to watch the Chase since the current format debuted in 2004.

Beth's Brief
Quicken Loans Signing a Positive Sight

by Beth Lunkenheimer

Tuesday morning, all eyes were on Stewart-Haas Racing and the "big announcement" that was scheduled, and as people began showing up and tweeting out pictures beforehand, it instantly became clear that Quicken Loans would be in the middle of it all. When all was said and done, the company was in the middle, alright -- as the centerpiece of Ryan Newman's 2013 sponsorship package.  Having served as a primary sponsor for nine events this season, pairing with Newman while serving as an associate sponsor for team owner Tony Stewart, the Detroit-based company has doubled their commitment to the team for the 2013 season. The nation's largest online mortgage lender will serve as primary sponsor for Newman in 18 races and as an associate sponsor on both the No. 39 and the No. 14 Chevrolets.

"We were not sure what to expect with the 2012 season being our first in the sport. What we quickly found was that NASCAR fans are tremendously passionate and loyal to the brands that help drive their sport," Jay Farner, President and Chief Marketing Officer for Quicken Loans said in announcing the move. "It was their commitment to our company that ultimately allowed us to significantly increase our involvement with Stewart-Haas Racing and Ryan Newman."

Newman, a driver that typically doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeve, looked visibly relieved knowing he's got half of the season taken care of after the departure of U.S. Army, who served as his primary sponsor for 12 events this year and has been a partner since his transition over to SHR in 2009.

"I'm really looking forward to having Quicken Loans back with the team in 2013. Over the past year, I've come to know the company well, and learned more about mortgages than I ever thought I would," Newman said. "They're really into our sport and have engaged with our fans in a big way. I look forward to representing them well through the rest of this year and next."

As for the other open races, Stewart seemed quite confident that they'll have all of the races sold before the 2013 season even begins, something that has not necessarily been the case in NASCAR across the board this year. In fact, one could make the argument that Quicken is the only sponsor to increase their commitment to this degree from 2012 to 2013, joining Fifth Third Bank as one of the few pouring more funding into the Cup Series during an era when so many are pulling back. And with their example, SHR appears secure that others on the No. 39 will follow their lead.

"We've got a number of them already re-signed and still under contract," Stewart said of backers like Outback Steakhouse, Aspen Dental and others who appeared on Newman's car for a handful of events as a primary sponsor. "This gets us pretty close to having that inventory sold. This was a big, big void filled by what we're losing with U.S. Army."

With sponsorship issues plaguing all three of NASCAR's top series, the news couldn't be better for SHR and the sport as a whole. Knowing that there's a company willing to invest more rather than scaling back or removing themselves altogether can only be good news for the future. And it's equally good news for an organization that has lost the primary sponsorship in Office Depot just two years after losing Old Spice, a company that had backed Stewart for 11 years. What I did find rather interesting about the whole press conference was how uncertain Tony Stewart was about the future of the No. 39 team despite having already re-signed Newman for the 2013 season.

"I definitely (was worried)," Stewart said. "We've got a couple of big holes on the sponsorship side so this definitely fills a big part of that and definitely helps us on the 39 car side and take a lot of pressure off of ensuring whether or not we will have this car on the track full-time next year. It will be on track full-time."

Consider for a moment that SHR is expanding to three full-time teams next season with the addition of Danica Patrick. You would think that before those decisions were made, arrangements for sponsorship would be the key discussion. However, that apparently wasn't the case with SHR re-signing Newman despite not knowing how they would replace the 12 races that the U.S. Army had taken care of this season. While that shows a lot of confidence in Newman, it had to take a toll on the future planning of the entire organization not knowing whether they'd be able to field all three cars in every race.

The good news for Newman is that the finances have now worked in his favor, leaving the driver to focus on the 2013 championship and possible crew changes instead of crossing his fingers on funding. While it's far from a full season sponsorship, and there are still questions about who will replace the departing Office Depot on Stewart's No 14, SHR is headed in the right direction with four months left before next year's season opener to fill the holes that are left for the team.

@CandiceSpencer: Want to know why this isn't a lateral move for @KurtBusch? There are eight crew men at Phoenix Racing, 64 at Furniture Row Racing #NASCAR

@kaseykahne: Hey @austindillon3 why ask me what happened after race and then tell tv something else? I said the engine shut off.

@NelsonPiquet: It's for sure one of the best moments of my career without a doubt!! I'm at the airport bit tired from the long night we had ;-)

@DeLanaHarvick: Keelan is giving @KevinHarvick a little pep talk before the race! #godadgo http://img.ly/nX9E

@jeff_gluck: Someone asked Hornish about his contract at tweetup. Hornish said he was in a meeting w/Roger Penske when he left to come to tweetup. #oops

@jeff_gluck: But anyway, Hornish told fans he was told by Penske they'd work on the deal more next week. Seems fairly confident he'll be back there.

@RCR31JeffBurton: Spending a little time with the family (minus one) prior to the green flag @MonsterMile #NASCAR -PR https://twitter.com/RCR31JeffBurton/status/252466486734635008/photo/1

@MissJFish: P8 for the day. Not too bad considering this track was our Achilles heel of the Chase. We'll take it!

@2Spotter (Joey Meier): Happy birthday to me...Happy birthday to me...Happy Birthday to @2Spotter.......thanks @keselowski #NASCAR

@Brett_Griff: Weird race. Pissed off with a top 10 is a good problem to have, right? #NASCAR

@tomjensen100: For the fifth time in six races, @jeffgordonweb finishes second or third. And he loses ground in the championship. @nascaronspeed #nascar

@Writer_Amy: A week after complaining that he's not getting enough TV interviews, Kyle Busch declines to be interviewed. Can he have it both ways? #NASCAR

@3widemiddle: Congrats to my friend @2Spotter on his win today at Dover! Fun racing u guys, just wish we could've raced for it at the end.

@SteveLetarte: Best compliment of year: Fact that JRNation is not happy w start in chase. Expectations where they should be! How far we have come!

@RyanNewman39: I'm thrilled to be driving for @quickenloans next year. Engineered to amaze, indeed!

@bobpockrass: While not going into $$, Stewart said the cost of 18 races for 2013 was more than 9 for 2012 for Quicken Loans. Increase in investment.

@dcaraviello: Marcus Smith tells Brad that significant other is welcome to compete in track's Better Half Dash. Brad: "There are no significant others."

@DNewtonESPN: Woman making a difference in @Keselowski life at the moment is sister Dawn, who's helping keep race organization & life straight. #nascar

@dcaraviello: Brad Keselowski said he'll reduce N'wide involvement to focus more on Chase. Ryan Blaney to now drive No. 22 at Kansas. Rest played by ear.

@keselowski: Who would have thought my sister helping me out would be news worthy? I'm very proud/happy to have her support along with many others.

Q: In 1998, Dave Marcis finished 12th in the Winston 500, his best finish in the last five years of his career. However, it didn't come easy for him. What happened to the Realtree Chevrolet during the race?

Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Tuesday's Answer:

Q:
The 1996 DieHard 500 at Talladega is best known for the infamous crash that resulted in Dale Earnhardt breaking his collarbone and sternum. This race was also notable for a different reason. What was that?

A:
This was the last Sprint Cup race to be aired via tape delay. It wasn't supposed to be this way, but the race was delayed for hours by rain. By the time the telecast reached the end of its timeslot, the track was still not dry. As a result, CBS left Talladega for the day. As a result of that action, a local TV station was able to embargo footage of Earnhardt's crash for a full day. The race eventually aired Saturday afternoon.
