Testing For 2013 Cars Set, Dodge To Sit Out First One

The testing schedule for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup cars was announced Thursday, with the first round coming Tuesday and Wednesday at Martinsville Speedway. One notable absence will be the presence of a 2013 Dodge as no teams are signed with the manufacturer at the moment. The drivers scheduled for the first test are Carl Edwards for the Ford Fusion, Martin Truex, Jr. in the Toyota Camry and Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson in the Chevrolet SS. The tests typically include at least one driver from each of NASCAR's four car manufacturers. Other upcoming tests for the 2013 cars at Talladega Oct. 4, Texas Oct. 9-10 and Kansas Oct. 18.

In the Martinsville test, teams are expected to experiment with lightening the weight on the right front so Goodyear can construct a tire with more grip in an effort to create better racing.

The 2013 Dodge Charger, along with the other three manufacturers, has been approved by NASCAR, but was left without a team when Penske Racing announced March 1 that it would be switching to Ford for the 2013 season.

"Due to the lack of time to prepare for the on-track test for the 2013 cars scheduled next week at Martinsville, we have elected to forgo that test opportunity," Beth Paretta, director of marketing and operations for SRT Brand and Motorsports told USA Today.

Just when Dodge will sign a team for next year remains to be seen. But according to NASCAR vice president of competition Robin Pemberton, the manufacturer could be on the verge of signing a team and is not too far behind in the testing process.

"Dodge is putting some things together," Pemberton said. "I don't think it could come fast enough for everyone in the industry."

BK Racing To help for Search of Missing Iowa Girls

BK Racing is adding faces and phone numbers to two of their Sprint Cup cars at Pocono Raceway in order to help find two missing girls from Iowa. Elizabeth Collins, and her cousin, Lyric Cook have been missing since July 13.

BK Racing will run special decals of each girl's face, one on the No. 83 driven by Landon Cassill, and the other on the No. 93 driven by Travis Kvapil. The decals will appear on the deck lids of each car and also feature phone number to call for anyone who has information about the girls.

"The group leading the search efforts has been contacting as many people as possible about this case to help spread the word," said Cassill, who is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. "Being from Iowa, and having some other folks in the sport from Iowa, we're all pulling together to raise as much attention as possible to help locate the two missing girls. I really want to do as much as possible and this is one step. I can't thank the team enough for doing this."

As a father of three, Kvapil also can relate to the cause.

"As a parent, I want to do anything I can to help the families locate their children," Kvapil said. "I'm pleased that we have the special decals on our cars this weekend and I hope that this will aid in the search."

BK Racing is in its first full season of racing on the Sprint Cup circuit and hopes the publicity helps.

"Learning more about this case, and with Landon being from Iowa himself, I think it was important for us to help out," said team co-owner Ron Devine. "We have worked with our sponsors to make space on our cars to help raise awareness. Once learning more about the case we didn't hesitate in putting the wheels in motion to help where we can. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the girls' families during these difficult times."

The girls were last seen in Evansdale, Iowa. Their bikes and Elizabeth's purse were found near a trail at the edge of Meyers Lake after they had left their grandmother's house. The numbers to call with any information about the girls are 1-800-THE-LOST (843-5678) or the local tip line at 1-319-232-6682.

ISC Constructing Cell Towers At 12 Tracks

International Speedway Corporation has reached an agreement to lay fiber optics and build cell phone towers at 12 of its racetracks. American Tower Corporation and Corning Cable Systems have been contracted to install the fiber optics and towers.

"We are committed to enhancing the fan experience at all of our major motorsports facilities to better grow ISC's business,"  ISC's Vice President and Multi-Channel Marketing and Chief Information Officer Craig Neeb said in a release. "Our customers want greater ability to communicate using their wireless devices when they attend our events. We too want the ability to connect with these customers as they enter our motorsport facilities with timely information to enhance their event day experience."

The NASCAR tracks owned by ISC are Daytona, Talladega, Michigan, Richmond, Auto Club Speedway in Southern California, Kansas, Phoenix, Chicagoland, Homestead-Miami, Martinsville, Darlington and Watkins Glen.

According to Neeb, the goal of the towers and fiber optics is to allow fans easier access to digital information while attending races at the tracks. The release did not state when the projects were scheduled to begin or when they would be completed.

Brian Burns to Crew Chief for Labonte

As JTG Daugherty Racing continues its search for the perfect crew chief for their No. 47 Toyota team following Todd Berrier's departure last week, Brian Burns has been chosen to sit sit atop the pit box this weekend at Pocono. David Hyder, who filled the spot last weekend, will be fulfilling his normal duties as crew chief for Cale Conlet in the K&N Pro Series east. The team has been quiet in their quest to find a long-term crew chief to fill the void.

Lofton Snags Sponsor for Three Races

Following the departure of CollegeComplete.com a few weeks ago, Justin Lofton and his No. 6 Eddie Sharp Racing team have been piecing together their sponsorship as they can. This week, ESR and Lofton announced Millennium VIP Group Private Jet Services beginning with this weekend's event at Pocono Speedway. The Las Vegas, NV-based company will also adorn the No. 6 Chevrolet at Michigan and Bristol later this month.

"We're very excited to welcome Millennium VIP Group Private Jet Services as a sponsor for the No. 6 Chevrolet at Pocono, Michigan and Bristol," Lofton said.  "They are one of the premier private jet charter services and they will make a great compliment to our community of supporters."

Lofton, who currently sits third in the Truck Series standings, boasts one win, four top 5s and eight top-10 finishes in ten starts.

Starr Withdraws From Pocono Mountains 125

Just two weeks removed from his 300th career start, David Starr has been forced to withdraw his entry at Pocono this weekend, leaving just 34 trucks on the entry list. The 44-year-old didn't expect to make his milestone start last weekend but managed to thanks to the help of no fewer than 15 different companies jumping on board.

"We have been very lucky this season with the partners that we have, Zachry, AdvoCare, and BYF to name a few, who have all gone above and beyond to support us this season," Starr said. "But right now, we don't have the money lined-up for a handful of races. We are fortunate and thankful to our partners this season and we're looking forward returning strong with those same partners to our next race this season."

In ten starts this season, Starr scored his lone top-10 finish at Chiagoland two weeks ago. He currently sits 16th in the standings.

Keepin' It Short: A Tough Blow For Keith Rocco
by Mike Neff

Keith Rocco was the closest pursuer to Lee Pulliam in the Whelen All-American points championship. Rocco won the title in 2010 and had hoped become the third driver in the 31 year history of the National Championship to win more than one title. His efforts came to a crashing halt on Sunday during a practice session for an SK modified race at Thompson International Speedway. Rocco reportedly cut a tire and spun hard into the wall. The impact fractured Rocco's left arm and has all but ended his pursuit of the second national title. According to Rocco's fiance's Facebook page, he will have surgery today to repair the wrist. Depending on the recovery time, he could potentially get in a few more races before the point cutoff, but the odds are pretty long on Rocco making up the 42-point deficit that he currently has to Pulliam.

Last week Rocco picked up a win and a top 5, which trimmed eight markers off of Pulliam's lead. Now that he is done accumulating points for the foreseeable future, he will most likely drop to the second half of the top 10 in points. Rocco's misfortune is almost certainly going to make the battle for the National Title a southern affair, as C.E. Falk, III and Nate Monteith are the next two drivers behind Rocco in the standings. Ted Christopher and Ryan Preece are the Northeast representatives who'll be left to try and make a charge at Pulliam but they're 73 points behind with just over a month until the September 16th cutoff.

Another ramification of this misfortune for Rocco is that, depending on how many points the remaining eight drivers in the top 10 in National Points can garner, he could fall out of the top 10, which would mean he would not have a guaranteed spot in the Modified race at the Battle at the Beach next year during Speedweeks. The Battle is a huge event that is going to offer quite a bit of exposure to sponsors and, similar to the top 35 rule in the Cup series, a locked in spot will afford local drivers the option to secure sponsorship deals with the potential television exposure going a long way for companies interested in it.

It is a shame when an injury happens to any racer, especially one when the driver is embroiled in a heated point's battle for a championship. When it is the National Championship it is even more disturbing. Hopefully Rocco will mend quickly and be back in the battles on the bullrings of the Northeast sooner rather than later.

God Speed Keith

Whelen All-American Points

Lee Pulliam put another maximum point win in the books at Motor Mile Speedway this past weekend. That gives him 15 wins this season with eight of them being maximum point wins. Pulliam has seven weeks left to score points toward what he hopes will be his first national championship. With double features and multiple tracks running on a few weekends, Pulliam will have roughly 10 races to try and score maximum points. If he can put seven more maximum point wins in the books, he'd be the second driver to score the 810 points of a maximum point title chase.

With Rocco's injury, the battle to dislodge Pulliam from the top rung of the point ladder falls to C.E. Falk, III and Nate Monteith. The two drivers, especially Falk, have direct opportunities to prevent Pulliam from notching max point wins. Pulliam is not running for a track championship so he's travelling among different tracks in the Southeast. Pulliam has visited Kinsgsport several times this year to add to his point total including this past Friday. Unfortunately for Pulliam, after setting fast time, he only completed 19 laps while Monteith went on to the win.

While Pulliam was redeeming his weekend with a win at Motor Mile on Saturday, Falk was running in the Hampton Heat 200, the biggest race of the Summer at Langley. Unfortunately for Falk, Matt Bowling made a rare trip over to the eastern side of NC to run at Langley and he pulled off the upset, beating Falk at his home track and taking home $10,000 in the process. While Falk did come home second, he missed a prime opportunity to notch a max point win.

In the end, it is still Pulliam's title to lose. If he can score three more wins he'll have the maximum number of bonus points while seven wins should lock the title in for him as the first driver to the maximum points.

ASA National Points Race

Shelby Stroebel and Lance Gatlin had the last weekend off but are both still on top of their respective point division races. There are two months left in the ASA National Points Championship race. While it is going to be difficult for anyone to catch Stroebel or Gatlin, the possibility is still there which is why the racers are still hitting the tracks and doing their best to win races at the ASA tracks across the United States.

Fantasy Friday: Pennsylvania 400
by Jeff Wolfe

This Sunday's race at Pocono may be circled on the calendar for several Chase hopefuls that need at least one victory to have a shot at snagging the wild card, and one of those is Joey Logano, who sits 17th in the points standings. Coincidentally, this is also Logano's contract year, so if he were to make the Chase, that would certainly be in his favor, whether he re-signs with Gibbs, or goes elsewhere.

But for him to make the Chase as a wild-card, he's going to need another victory. Kasey Kahne (two wins) and Kyle Busch (one win) currently hold the wild card spots. Logano's problem is he sits 44 points behind Busch with just one victory at Pocono earlier this year. With just six races left in NASCAR's regular season, he's not likely to catch Busch on points alone, meaning he'll need another trip to victory lane to secure his spot in the Chase.

With history on his side, Logano would love nothing more than to snag the win on Sunday. Since Pocono began hosting two races per season in 1982, there have been six drivers to complete the single season sweep. They are Bobby Allison in 1982, Bill Elliott in 1985, Tim Richmond in 1986, Bobby Labonte in 1999, Jimmie Johnson in 2004 and Denny Hamlin in 2006.

A repeat is not out of the question for Logano, even though his other official top finishes in six races at Pocono have been 11th and 13th. Logano is 22, and he's certainly young enough to think there will be more chances for him to make the Chase should he not do it this season. But there has to be a first time for everything, and Logano's best chance to make his first Chase may very well depend on whether or not he wins Sunday.

Top 5 Picks

Joey Logano  - Hopefully, you just read about this. He needs that repeat.

Jeff Gordon  - Much like Logano, he desperately needs his first win of the season to have a shot at the Chase as he sits 24 points behind Busch. It helps that he has won five times at Pocono.

Denny Hamlin - He's got four wins here, one of those slam dunk picks for the Tricky Triangle.

Jimmie Johnson - OK, he's pretty much an every week pick at this point. He's got two wins at Pocono, too.

Carl Edwards - He was set up to run fast at Indy last week, only to be slowed by engine woes. He's won here twice before, and like Gordon, is in desperation mode to get his first win of the season. He sits 12th in points, six behind Busch, for that final Chase spot.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda - Brad Keselowski is one of the guys I wanted to pick here, but just ran out of choices. He ran well at Indy last week, which is often a good sign at Pocono. He also has a win at Pocono.

ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP
Here's a look at how last week's picks fared at Indianapolis.

Tony Stewart: 10th. He didn't have a good day at all, but rallied for this finish.

Jimmie Johnson: 1st. He's capable of winning any week anywhere. Looking like a future six-time champion.

Jeff Gordon:
5th. He was strong all day at Indy.

Kasey Kahne:
12th. Also did not have a good day, but rallied late for respectable finish.

Kevin Harvick:
13th. After a miserable day, where he was mostly outside the top 15, and often somewhere in the 20s, he managed a decent finish.

Say What?!?

"I am excited to go back because we had a really strong car there in the last race. I think we had a few track-position issues to overcome and a two speeding issues, but we still managed a top-five finish. Chad (Knaus, crew chief) called a great race. He got me some track position on two tires. The pit stops were flawless and we had a fast car. After last week's win at the Brickyard, the entire team is excited to get to Pocono and keep the momentum going." -Jimmie Johnson

"A lot of people don't get it from the outside looking in that we have had an uphill battle," Labonte said. "Our entire team has worked countless man hours and also built a lot of things just to get the shop ready for this year.' You can't start behind because it's hard to get caught up during the year. At the same time, we are sitting 23rd in the points standings and we are battling guys that have a lot of structure. Now, we're taking the next steps to get even better." -Bobby Labonte

"My guys have been working their guts out this week getting ready for Sunday, and I can't thank them enough for all they do. It's been a long week already with us testing in Michigan right after Indy, but I know what my team is capable of and we are going to show that on Sunday at 'The Tricky Triangle." -Marcos Ambrose

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
These days, Pocono Raceway is actually a pretty good track for Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Not so much in the past. You might remember his first lap crash with teammate Steve Park there in 2002. The 2006 Pennsylvania 500 was another miserable day for Earnhardt, Jr. What happened?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: During the 2004 Pennsylvania 500, Tony Stewart got loose exiting Turn 1 and crashed into Kasey Kahne and the wall on the Long Pond Straightaway. The wreck put Stewart out of the race, while Kahne continued and eventually finished third. While this was a racing incident, the teams entered Pocono with some bad blood between them. Why?

A: In the previous race at Chicagoland Speedway, Kahne and Stewart had come together on a restart. Kahne's No. 9 ended up being turned head-on into the wall on the frontstretch.  Multiple other cars piled in. This incensed Kahne's crew, and resulted in them going after Stewart's crew in the pits. The whole mess can be seen in this clip. The fight can be seen at the 1:20 mark.
