RPM Makes Pit Crew Switches for Ambrose, Almirola

According a report from FoxSports.com's Lee Spencer, Richard Petty Motorsports announced they're changing up the pit crews for Marcos Ambrose's No. 9 team and Aric Almirola's No. 43 in hopes of helping performance for both drivers.

"We're trying to move things around to improve the performance on both teams," RPM Director of Operations Sammy Johns said.

The moves will include the swapping the rear tire changing combination of changer Justin Fiedler and carrier Eric Wallace from Ambrose's team with changer Kyle Power and carrier Blake Haugland from Almirola's team. Also, the teams will switch jackmen with as Rodney Fetters will move to the No. 43 team and Kevin Wing will move to the No. 9 team.

Ambrose finished fifth at Michigan last week after earning his second career Sprint Cup victory at Watkin Glen Aug. 12. Ambrose currently sits 17th in the points standings while Almirola is 21st.

ESPN To Move NASCAR Broadcast In Six Markets

ESPN announced Thursday afternoon that, due to conflicts with NFL teams in some markets, Saturday's Irwin Tools Night Race to different channels. Race coverage is scheduled to begin at 7 PM ET with the actual green flag scheduled for 7:48 PM on ABC.

However, in Buffalo, New York, Tulsa, Oklahome, Weslaco, Texas, and Quincy, Illinois, the race will be shown on ESPN. Also, in Detroit, WXYZ-TV will show the first part of the race on its digital tier 2 channel, then join the race in progress on its regular channel once the Detroit Lions preseason game ends. And in Rochester, New York, WHAM-TV will move the race to its digital tier 2 channel.

The ABC affiliates in Little Rock, Arkansas, Corpus Christi, Texas, and Omaha, Nebraska, will pre-empt NASCAR Countdown for local news, but will join the NASCAR broadcast at 7:30 PM ET.

Nationwide Crew Member Hess Suspended

NASCAR announced Thursday that Nationwide Series crew member Ryan Hess has been indefinitely suspended for violating the sanctioning body's substance abuse policy. Wednesday, Hess was found to have violated Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 19 (violation of the NASCAR substance abuse policy) of the 2012 NASCAR Rule Book .

Hess has been a member of the MacDonald Motorsports team for the past four years. According to a report on rantsports.com earlier this month, Hess has been a jack of all trades for the team. The Mooresville, N.C.-native is a mechanic along with being in charge of decals, tires, parts running, loading the hauler and being the gas man for the No. 81 car on race day.

Front Row Motorsports one of Inc. Magazine's fastest growing private companies

Front Row Motorsports has been named one of Inc. Magazine's 5000 fastest growing privately owned companies. According to a press release by Front Row Motorsports, the NASCAR Sprint Cup team was placed at No. 800 on the list. The team fields the No. 26 car driven by Josh Wise, No. 34 driven by David Regan and the No. 38 driven by David Gilliland..

According to the release, FRM has had 12 new primary sponsors for at least one race this season, and five of those sponsorships have turned into multi-race deals.

"We are selling sponsorship and raising corporate dollars in a time when very few teams are," said Robin Johnson, chief marketing office for FRM. "It's not a negative that companies are placing more scrutiny on their budgets. It just forces us to be smarter with how we go about building and executing our programs."

The team's cars have not been major factors on the track this season. Gilliland is 28th in the points standings, Ragan is 30th and Wise, a rookie, is 39th. Ragan has the team's only top-10 finish this season, a seventh at Talladega in April.

"Our team is focused on constant improvement both on the racetrack and in the marketplace" said Jerry Freeze, general manager who has been with FRM since 2009. "Being named to the Inc. 5000 is certainly a victory for us off the track and shows that we are capable of winning in corporate America. We're an interesting case study to look at - we've raced at least two teams full-time in the Sprint Cup Series since 2009. We're a team that came into the sport right as the economy started to take a turn for the worse. We've weathered the storm, so to speak. Being named to the Inc. 5000 is a nice way to be recognized for our hard work and resiliency."

Junior Johnson's House Auctioned

Junior Johnson's house and accompanying 150-acre farm were auctioned earlier this month and sold for $2.3 million dollars. According to the Statesville Record and Landmark, Loretta Sides Shore, who owns Shore's Nursery said she had placed the winning bid in a sale that's scheduled to close this week. Shore says she and her husband will move in shortly following minor changes, however murals that adorn the walls will remain in place.

"I could just appreciate all the hand painting and murals," Shore said. "They took such great pains in building that house."

Johnson raised cattle on the farm but health issues forced him to give it up and move with his wife to Charlotte. The house went up for auction after it failed to sell at just under $5 million.

Miller Lite, Keselowski to Honor Rusty Wallace

Brad Keselowski's No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge will feature a special retro paint scheme in honor of 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Rusty Wallace. The car will feature an exact replica of the scheme Wallace used to sweep Bristol in 2000, including his 50th career win in the Food City 500 March 26th.

"Rusty had a tremendous ability to excel on short tracks and demonstrated that unique talent many times, especially at Bristol," Roger Penske said. "The 2000 season was really a special year for us there. I'm honored that we could help recognize Rusty's crowning achievement."

In 706 career starts, Wallace amassed 55 wins--37 with Penske Racing and seven at Bristol, 202 top 5s and 349 top-10 finishes.

"Being elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame is such an enormous honor. This sport has done so much for me and I hope that I can keep giving back to it for many years to come," Wallace said. "I couldn't think of a better place to be honored for my induction that Bristol Motor Speedway. I'm very proud of my record there; it's such a special venue where everyone wants to win."

Since moving to the Miller Lite Dodge at the beginning of the 2011 season, Keselowski has scored six wins, 19 top 5s and 27 top-10 finishes in 59 races.

Keepin' It Short: Messing With Tradition
by Mike Neff

Martinsville Speedway has hosted the biggest race in Late Model racing for nearly 20 years in the fall. The best race car drivers from around the country converge on the historic half-mile track every year to not only chase the $25,000 first prize, but also a historic grandfather clock. For years the drivers have practiced and then qualified on Saturday, locking in the top 22 drivers for the Sunday feature race, however, this year that will change. Qualifying will technically not be held. Drivers will post some kind of a speed in a practice session on Saturday afternoon and then race in a heat race on Sunday. The cars who do not advance into the feature through heat races will run a 50 lap last chance qualifier, with 10 drivers advancing into the feature. Finally the feature will be run, but 50 laps shorter than the 200 that has been customary.

Change is hard to deal with and the Late Model community has been up in arms this week talking about the alteration to the qualifying process. The unintended consequences of the change will probably not be fully realized until at least the start of the Sunday feature if not years from now. The initial blush at the changes is people either love them or hate them.

One of the largest questions is going to be maintaining order within the rules during the practice session that is going to set the starting positions in the heat races. The infield at Martinsville will be full of cars from end to end and front to back. Keeping eyes on every car to make sure it enters the race track in a legal configuration is going to be a very difficult task. A car could end up with an oversized carburetor that allows it to rip off a few good laps and then come in and change to a legal one for whatever technical inspection will follow. Tires will be issued to teams before practice. Will there be a way to ensure they haven't been altered? It will be very difficult to have officials looking at some 100 cars simultaneously.

Once the cars are on the track for their practice period, there comes the issue of blocking. The starting positions are going to be set by some kind of fast time, although initially it isn't sounding like it is going to be a single fast lap. If averages are being taken into consideration, and a car is well off of the pace, it could delay the car of one of the faster drivers and cost him a front row starting spot.

Once the heat races roll off on Sunday, you then have the issue of a back marker interfering with a leading car and wrecking him, costing him a position in the race. Drivers in one heat could pay someone in another heat to wreck the top one or two cars to eliminate them from competition. We're talking about the biggest race in Late Model competition. Eliminating the best cars would make it easier for another competitor to have a better shot at a win.

At the same time, this rule change will eliminate having cars that are set up solely for qualifying make the race. A car can't go out and stay competitive for 25 laps when it is set up for a handful of fast ones. The heat races should bring out the best of drivers and the best drivers should rise to the top of the hill.

When something isn't broken, you don't need to fix it, but that is what they're doing with the Virginia is for Racing Lovers' 300. In the end, it probably won't make much of a difference and all of this hand wringing is going to be for naught. We'll all find out at the end of October when the Late Models hit Martinsville the week before the NASCAR touring series races.

Whelen All-American Points Race

The National Championship race has hit the home stretch. It is less than a month until the points are finalized and the winner of the Whelen All-American National Championship is crowned. With that short period of time left, Lee Pulliam is still well ahead of second place and is now almost to the point where the goal is a perfect season rather than winning the title. Pulliam scored two more max point wins this past weekend and now has 20 total victories on the season. Pulliam is 27 points from the maximum 810 points and is 57 points ahead of Nate Monteith who is now in second. C.E. Falk, III has topped the 700 point barrier along with Ryan Preece. Keith Rocco's broken wrist has dropped him from second to fifth.

The top 10 has drivers from the North, South and Midwest with the difference in points less than 130 from first to tenth.

Position Name Races Wins Top 5s Top 10s Total Points

1.    Lee Pulliam 29 20 24 25 783
2.    Nate Monteith 27 10 20 23 726

9.    Jason O'Brien 26 5 18 24 657
10.    Duane Howard 17 8 14 17 654

A driver's best 18 results through Sept. 16 are counted toward their states and national point totals, and the champions are decided on overall point total. Once a driver reaches 18 starts, their total would increase incrementally as they replace some poorer runs with better results.
Under the points structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 20 cars. Second place receives two fewer points and so on through the field. Race winners receive an additional five points. For example, if 20 cars are in the field, the winner receives 45 points, second place 38 and third 36. If there are 15 cars, the winner receives 35 points, second 28 and third, 26.

ASA National Points Race

While Lance Gatlin finally spent a week at the track without going to Victory Lane, Shelby Stroebel continues to get it done at Meridian. He is now 13 for 13 and 15 total without a loss. The lack of car count at Meridian has still not killed Stroebel's chances as he continues to lead his region with the masses from I-44 breathing down his neck. Stroebel leads Matt Wallace, Mike Slone and Jim VanZandt while Michael Hale rounds out the top five in the Western Region.

For Gatlin, the loss did not unseat him from atop the East region where he is still the only driver with an average about four at this point in the season. Newport Speedway's Dennis Queen is leading the tight group that is chasing Gatlin along with Taylor Coffman from his track, who is fourth. Ryan Stiltner and Kevin Wolfe are keeping Gatlin honest at Lonesome Pine while they're third and fifth in the race.

Throughout the season, drivers competing in the premiere divisions at eligible ASA Member Tracks are in the running for the 2012 ASA Member Track National Championship.  In order to have a chance for the national title, a driver must first win their 2012 track championship.

Speednetdirect.com, for the fifth year in a row, will tabulate the National Championship standings.  Using a proprietary formula that creates an average based on wins, finishing positions, number of cars passed, car counts and events.  The driver who wins their track championship and has the highest average over the other ASA Member Track champions will win the 2012 ASA Member Track National Championship. Full standings are available at www.speednetdirect.com. Click on the ASA Member Track logo at the top of the page.

Fantasy Friday: Irwin Tools Night Race
by Jeff Wolfe

As NASCAR's regular season winds down with just three races remaining, a number of drivers have a number of different agendas. For some, it's about making the Chase for the Championship, NASCAR's version of the playoffs. Guys like Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Ryan Newman, Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano and Marcos Ambrose are battling for the two wild-card spots and need either a win or top-5 finishes to make the Chase.

Others, guys solidly in the top 10, can simply go for the win. Guys like Greg Biffle, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Brad Keselowski can experiment a little without the worry of not making the Chase. Or they can gamble a little and go for the win, too, with their high reward, low risk situation.

The Sprint Cup Series heads to the reconfigured Bristol Saturday night at 7 on ABC. Will the return to the old track bring back the beatin', bangin', helmet-throwing style that made Bristol famous? We'll find out for sure Saturday.

Top 5 Picks

Kyle Busch - He's just outside the Chase picture and needs at least a good finish, but more importantly a win. He's got five of them at Bristol, so he's a must pick here.

Jeff Gordon - It's pretty much win one of these next three races or miss the Chase for the four-time champion. He's also got five wins here and the return to the former track style could help him.

Brad Keselowski - He's been excellent lately, and it seems no matter what kind of track the Sprint Cup guys are on, the No. 2 is contending for a win. Keselowski has two wins at Bristol and it wouldn't be a surprise to see him at or close the front again.

Carl Edwards - Much like Gordon, he's desperate for a win. He has two of them at Bristol and since he's 12th in points now, a win would put him in the Chase heading into the final two regular season races.

Kevin Harvick - He's without a win this year and, in the past, hasn't been afraid to use his bumper to get by slower cars on the short tracks. He's also got a new / old crew chief this week in Gil Martin, so maybe familiarity will help him win for the third time at Bristol.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda - There were a lot of tough choices this week. I kept going back to Ryan Newman and I may regret not picking him. He's usually a good qualifier, which helps at Bristol, where track position is everything. He's been relatively good on short tracks, too, with an average finish of 11.9 since the beginning of the 2010 season.

ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP
Here's a look at how last week's picks fared at Michigan.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.  - 4th. He was solid for much of the day, though never really a threat to win.

Jimmie Johnson - 27th. He had it won, until his car decided to display its grenade engine in the final laps.

Greg Biffle - 1st. He said he would have caught Johnson before the end of the race. He was fast at the end for sure, so maybe the fastest car did win.

Carl Edwards  - 6th.  He was solid again, but the No. 99 really needs a win to make the Chase and he knows solid won't quite cut it.

Tony Stewart - 32nd. Also the victim of a Hendrick grenade engine in the early going.

Season Stats
115 Predictions
14  Wins
40 top 5s
54 top 10s

Grade for the week: B+. I thought I had the winner in Johnson, but still had it in Biffle. So, in the end, it was three of the top six, and easily could have been four of the top seven.

One last thing: At some tracks, it's true, qualifying is not a big deal. But that's not the case at Bristol. Of the 103 races there, the winner has started 10th or better 82 times, and 52 of the winners have come from the first four starting positions.

Say What?!?

"Our team has a lot of momentum and we've put together a nice string of finishes in the past few weeks. I'm pretty sure I'll be the only driver walking out during driver intros to a song recorded by a crew member. Kenyatta does a great job for us week in and week out changing tires. His new song 'Life In The Pits,' is a very creative piece that I think a lot of NASCAR fans will enjoy. I'd really like to post a nice run for Taco Bell this weekend. Bob [Jenkins] owns a lot of Taco Bell stores here in Tennessee, so it would be cool to put together a solid effort for all of his managers here in the Volunteer state." David Gilliland

"Bristol is one of those tracks that I get a little extra pumped up for. For me, I think that feeling gets a little stronger when you're talking about the night race at Bristol. There's just something special about that race. I knew it before I ever made it to the big-league level of the Sprint Cup Series but, the first time I was able to experience the night race as a competitor, it's almost indescribable. It's a place that gives you a big adrenaline rush. You can literally feel the energy around the track from the competitors and the fans that are just excited for 500 laps of racing at Bristol. There's really nothing quite like it." Kurt Busch

"Bristol to me is a man's racetrack and I respect that place so much. I think it takes a level of respect for it. From day one, the first day I walked in there, I respected it but I also wanted to win there. I wanted to prove to myself and others that I could be the man to win at a man's racetrack. So it's always been a challenge to me and it's one that, for some reason, has taken a piece of me somewhere deep inside and made it rise to the next level. I just love it for that reason.  There are few things in life that can do that to anyone and Bristol is that place for me. To be on the cusp of three wins in a row there is something that was, and still is, beyond my wildest dreams. But here we are and we are going to do everything in our power to get it done in the Miller Lite Dodge this weekend." Brad Keselowski

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
The 1998 Food City 250 for the then-Busch Grand National Series was a war of attrition. Only seven drivers (winner Kevin Lepage, Phil Parsons, Dale Jarrett, Todd Bodine, Tim Fedewa, Ken Schrader and Wayne Grubb) managed to finish on the lead lap. There would have been more than that, but an incident took out a number of contenders late. What happened to cause this crash?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: Bristol has played host to multiple bumping matches over the years, and the 2001 Sharpie 500 was no different. Who got into it multiple times with each other during the race?

A: Interestingly enough, it was Johnny Benson and Brett Bodine. Benson was spun out early out of second exiting Turn 2, collecting John Andretti and Kurt Busch while collateral damage put Ron Hornaday and Jeff Green behind the wall for new radiators. Later in the race, Benson spun again and backed into the wall in Turn 1, ending his night.
