Sadler Claims Third Nationwide Win of Season

Elliott Sadler held off a hard-charging Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. on a Green-White-Checkered finish to win Sunday's running of the STP 300 at Chicagoland Speedway. Sadler took advantage of an opportune caution during a round of green-flag stops to gain the lead, lost his advantage to Justin Allgaier, then regained the point on Lap 170.  Allgaier finished third, with Kenny Wallace fourth and Michael Annett fifth.  For a full recap of Sunday's action, check out our Nationwide Series Breakdown at Frontstretch.

James Buescher Comes Back to Win Truck Race at Chicagoland

On Saturday night, James Buescher overcame electrical problems that dropped him two laps down to win the American Ethanol 225 at Chicagoland Speedway.  Brendan Gaughan was a strong second, while points leader Timothy Peters was third to extend his lead.  Matt Crafton was fourth, while Parker Kligerman rounded out the top-5.  For a full recap of Saturday night's action, check out Tracking the Trucks at Frontstretch.

Kenny Wallace Flunks Post-Race Inspection

For Kenny Wallace, Sunday was generally a great day.  He had managed to earn his best finish of the 2012 season while driving in a one-off second car for RAB Racing with Brack Maggard.  However, in post-race inspection, Wallace's No. 09 was discovered to be underweight; the amount by which he failed to meet the standard was not disclosed.  Penalties are likely coming for this infraction and will be announced on Tuesday.

Kenny Wallace to the No. 24 at Indianapolis

Before his team was busted for being underweight, Kenny Wallace also announced on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's The Backstretch with Jerry Bonkowski that he had signed a one-race deal to drive the No. 24 Toyota for SR2 Motorsports in Saturday's inaugural Indiana 250 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Sponsorship will be provided by a combination of Family Farmers (his sponsor on Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway), American Ethanol and the National Corn Growers Association.

Wallace is very pleased to be able to race next weekend at Indianapolis.

"I have the most starts in the history of the series and [Family Farmers] thought it was a crime that I wasn't going to be in the race," Wallace said.  "Luckily, Family Farmers, American Ethanol and the National Corn Growers Association, they came up with quite a bit of money four days ago ... and I'm going to drive the #24 Nationwide car."

SR2 Motorsports has mainly run Chevrolets this season, but has raced Toyotas in the three restrictor plate races.  Wallace will be the ninth driver this year to race under the SR2 Motorsports banner and the second from RAB Racing to drive for the team.  John Wes Townley brought sponsorship from Toyota's "Save In May" promotion to drive at Talladega in May.  The car was actually an RAB Racing car, rather than SR2 Motorsports' own equipment.  Benny Gordon has the team's best finish of the year when he finished 12th at Daytona in February.

In addition, Wallace also announced on Sunday that he would be driving the No. 22 for Penske Racing in the Nationwide Series in one race later this season.  However, which race that will be is still unknown.  As you may remember, Wallace was the "backup-to-the-backup" substitute for the suspended A.J. Allmendinger just in case Sam Hornish, Jr. could not make it to Daytona in time to start the Coke Zero 400.

TODAY ON THE FRONTSTRETCH:

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: The 1981 Indianapolis 500 is best known today for the controversy behind Bobby Unser and Mario Andretti passing drivers on the apron under caution, an issue that led to the winner of the race being changed twice after the race ended.  However, the race is also known for a huge crash involving Danny Ongais.  What happened?

Check back Tuesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Friday's Answer:

Q: The 1982 Grand Prix of Germany at the Hockenheimring is probably best known for the fight that occurred on Lap 18 when leader Nelson Piquet was taken out by the lapped car of Eliseo Salazar. However, something far more serious occurred prior to the race even starting. What was it?

A: During practice leading up to the race, it rained heavily.  During the practice session, pole sitter Didier Pironi drove his Ferrari directly into the back of Alain Prost's Renault.  Pironi likely never even saw Prost due to the spray created by the rains.  The impact caused Pironi's car to get airborne and then impact the barriers.  Pironi was pinned in the car and suffered career-ending injuries.  There was discussion of having to amputate one or both of Pironi's legs to get him out of the car, but this turned out not to be necessary.

Ultimately, this accident led to a long-term change in driving tactics for Prost, even though he was not to blame for the crash.  He took on a more careful driving style that ultimately earned him the nickname "The Professor."  However, it also earned him ridicule for intentionally parking his car in at least one Grand Prix (Australia, 1989) due to weather.  Pironi never raced again (although he did test a car in 1986) but made a full recovery before losing his life in a powerboating accident in 1987.
