Toyota Unveils 2013 Camry and Lineup
Toyota made big news Tuesday in the form of two huge announcements concerning the 2013 Sprint Cup season. The automaker began the day by revealing a new Camry that will debut during Budweiser Speedweeks in February. Designers created a car that is largely modeled after its street-legal companion, which continues a recent trend towards increased aesthetic realism which was set by Ford and Dodge models earlier this year.
"We're thrilled to finally unveil our new 2013 Camry and we think NASCAR fans will really appreciate that our new on-track Camry looks like the one in their driveways," said Ed Laukes, Toyota Motor Sales vice president of marketing communications and motorsports. "Never before have we had a Camry competing in NASCAR that looked so similar to its production counterpart."
According to NASCAR.com writer Joe Menzer, the new Camry features several modifications in comparison to its predecessor including: a newly shaped front-grille, fresh body lines above the wheel wells and along the side skirts, and an altered rear bumper.
"We're extremely proud of the new Camry and the development of the car was truly a unique process," said Lee White, president and general manager of Toyota Racing Development. "NASCAR and all four manufacturers were brought together to guide the direction of the new cars. We all worked together to put the 'S' back in NASCAR – we all wanted race cars that look more like our stock, production models – and together we accomplished that."
Toyota also made great strides Tuesday in assuring the continued success of its Sprint Cup efforts by reaching terms with several top organizations – Joe Gibbs Racing, Michael Waltrip Racing, and JTG / Daugherty Racing – on multi-year contract extensions.
The series of renewed partnerships means that TRD will remain a provider of engines and chassis engineering assistance to its teams. Through that high level of interaction and support, Toyota will continue to be a major contributor in the building success of MWR.
"Toyota has been the cornerstone of MWR," said co-owner Michael Waltrip. "They took a chance on us in 2007 and together we have matured into who we are today. It was an honor to be part of the freshman class. Knowing we will be with Toyota for the next several years gives our drivers, our team members and our sponsors a sense of stability and confidence."
MWR and Toyota have been partnered together since the manufacturer entered Sprint Cup prior to the '07 season. Since then, Waltrip's organization has seen gradual improvement before breaking out this year in the form of three poles and seven top-5s through the first 11 races in 2012. Currently, each MWR team finds itself within the top 12 in owner points.
"We look forward to continuing our relationship with Michael Waltrip Racing – a member of our 'freshman class' from 2007," said Lee White, TRD president and general manager. "MWR has steadily grown into a championship-caliber race team, and the team is now stronger than it's ever been. We're extremely proud of all the team's accomplishments, and we look forward to much more success together."
No. 56 Crew Wins First-Quarter Award
A strong performance by the No. 56 Michael Waltrip Racing crew has helped propel driver Martin Truex, Jr. to 6th position in points thus far in 2012. Because of their success the pit crew has been awarded the first-quarter Mechanix Wear Most Valuable Pit Crew Award, an honor reserved for Sprint Cup's top pit crew.
"The crew has done a great job this year," said Truex, Jr. "They've been very fast, but most importantly, they've been consistent. Anytime I come in on green or yellow flag conditions, I can count on those guys to hold their own and make no mistakes."
The New Jersey native's over-the-wall crew consists of crew chief Chad Johnston, jack man Brian Chase, front tire changer Eric Maycroft, front tire carrier Craig Curione, rear tire changer Brandon Hopkins, rear tire carrier Adam Mosher, and gas man Wes Evans. Greg Miller serves as the team's stretch and conditioning coach.
NASCAR Unites Teams with EGR at Charlotte
Earnhardt Ganassi Racing will honor military families this Memorial Day weekend when it teams with NASCAR Unites and its "An American Salute" campaign for the upcoming Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The alternate red, white, and blue look present on Juan Pablo Montoya's No. 42 Dodge Charger will be one of several special schemes sported by drivers during one of NASCAR's most prestigious races.
"We are very pleased to join Target in supporting NASCAR Unites for this great cause," said Steve Laulette, president of Chip Ganassi Racing. "Our servicemen and women are truly heroes and this is just a small way for us to recognize their many contributions to this great country. We will be very proud to see this car hit the track later this week."
Sadler Penalized for Iowa Infractions
NASCAR announced Tuesday that Elliott Sadler's Nationwide Series team had been penalized for rules violations found during post-race inspection following Sunday's Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 from Iowa Speedway. The No. 2 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet was found in violation of Sections 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing), 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR officials that race equipment used in the event does not conform to NASCAR rules) and 20A-12.8.1C (body height requirements--car failed to meet the minimum rear car heights). Sadler was docked six championship points as a result of the infraction. Additionally, owner-of-record DeLana Harvick was docked six owners' points and crew chief Luke Lambert was fined $10,000.
Sadler has two victories and eight top-10 finishes in ten starts this season and, following the penalty, trails point leader Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. by 34 markers.

Putting 'Stock' Back in Stock Car
Full Throttle
by Mike Neff
On Tuesday, Toyota unveiled their next generation Toyota Camry Cup Series car, and it was another step towards the 2013 NASCAR Cup season that will feature race cars that look much more like their street legal counterparts. The new ride has a redesigned nose, sides and rear end which reflect the design characteristics of the street car that it is modeled after. Like the Ford Fusion and Dodge Charger , the new Camry Cup car looks nearly identical to the street version, other than the front valance and rear spoiler and bumper.
The people who run NASCAR have heard the complaints that the cars on the track did not resemble the cars on the streets beyond some of the stickers on the car. NASCAR went to the teams and the manufacturers and set about rectifying that issue. The manufacturers were not allowed to touch the hood, roof or deck lid, but the nose, tail and sides were open for adjustment. It wasn't a completely blank slate, as the downforce numbers between the manufacturers have to be within very tight tolerances to help ensure parity. While there has been unprecedented cooperation between the teams, manufacturers and NASCAR, this will most certainly bring back to the sport something that has been missing for years; teams begging for rule changes.
Back in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, teams would routinely go to NASCAR and beg for a quarter of an inch here and an eighth there in a loosely orchestrated dance between manufacturers. Ford would have a driver win two or three races, another driver or two would score a win and the Chevrolet teams would be knocking on NASCAR's door claiming they were at a disadvantage. Ford would counter by saying they were working harder and coming up with advantages that had nothing to do with the spoiler or the side skirts and the Chevy teams were just jealous. Pontiac had fewer cars in the field, so they would have to fight extra hard, just like Buick, for any concessions. While people may have complained about it at the time, most older fans really miss those days when the different teams and manufacturers were constantly trying to gain an advantage and prevent the others from being given rule breaks.
In addition to those constant rule change requests, the cars on the track looked very similar to the cars on the street. When a car would win a race, or go on a winning streak, the sales for those cars would increase. The main reason was brand loyalty, but it was also because the pictures of the car in Victory Lane or during the race, showed a vehicle that looked just like the cars that could be purchased at the dealerships. That was the basis for the saying "win on Sunday, sell on Monday." The cars that won races on Sunday would see an uptick in sales most every week following the events.
There are many things that fans would like to see changed about NASCAR. One of the biggest points was that the cars didn't look at all like the cars on the street. Next season, starting in Daytona, there will be unique looking cars on the track that will look different from each other and very much like the cars that fans can purchase in the showroom. It isn't a huge step, but it is a big step in the right direction toward getting NASCAR back to where it came from and was most popular.
Most of all, it will put the 'stock' back into stock car racing.

@RB_Mrs: Getting ready for front row pics. Been here before, but never on the far right :-) http://t.co/6NfkwvOA
@AJDinger: Reason we took 4 tires was cause the other 3 segment winners already had fresher tires than we did and were going to start in front of us
@AJDinger: We weren't going to win like that anyway. So why not take a chance get 4 tires see if a big wreck happens on the start and have a chance for
@AJDinger: The win. In the All star race nothing else matters but the win. Had to try something. In the 600 for points we would have stayed out

@SluggerLabbe: It's weird watching Indy car qualifying cars wreck hard and they can actually repair them & race, with a COT it ends up in the dumpster?
@MonteDutton: #NASCAR Stop tinkering. The sport is tricked up enough already. Fix the racing, not the rules.
@AllenBestwick: 3:10 AM, just walked into my house from Iowa. Some days are easier than others...

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: In 2000, Matt Kenseth passed Bobby Labonte with 26 laps to go and held on to score his first career victory in the Coca-Cola 600. However, there was another winless driver who was very strong on that night. Who was it, and what ultimately knocked him clean out of contention?
Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!
Tuesday's Answer:
Tuesday's Answer:
Q: In 1981, CBS provided partial live coverage of what was then the World 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Bobby Allison won the race to take his second 600 victory. However, one of the main stories that day was the fate of Bobby's brother Donnie. What happened to Donnie Allison?
A: On Lap 151, Donnie Allison spun his No. 77 Oldsmobile, hit the wall, then came down the hill and was hit in the passenger side by Dick Brooks' No. 41 in a rather unusual side-to-side impact. Allison was knocked unconscious in the crash.
In Peter Golenbock's book Miracle: Bobby Allison and the Saga of the Alabama Gang, brother Eddie Allison described Donnie's injuries thusly. "What happened was that Donnie's brain banged the side of his skull and bruised it real bad," Eddie said. "So, it paralyzed him. The side of his face was all drooped. The left side of his face was paralyzed, and his left ear, and he had trouble talking. He would have trouble thinking of things to say. He had trouble making sentences."
It ultimately took a full year for Donnie to recover from his head injuries, but he returned to the driver's seat (outside of the Cup Series) by September, for no reason other than he needed the money. Following the crash, Donnie only drove 13 more races in Winston Cup with a best finish of sixth at Talladega in the 1982 Winston 500.
