Race Recap: Harvick, Busch Steal Show Friday Night
by Beth Lunkenheimer
The Camping World Truck Series took to the track Friday night at Texas Motor Speedway for the WinStar World Casino 350K When the checkered flag flew, it was Kevin Harvick, who led for a race-high 61 of 148 laps, who scored his fourth victory this season behind the wheel of the No. 2 Hunt Brothers Pizza Chevrolet. After starting tenth, Harvick led the final 45 laps and held the top spot over second-place Austin Dillon in a green-white-checkered finish. Ty Dillon, Nelson Piquet, Jr. and Matt Crafton rounded out the top 5. Rookie Joey Coulter brought his No. 22 Chevrolet home sixth and was followed by Johnny Sauter. Ricky Carmichael, Miguel Paludo and Justin Lofton rounded out the top 10.
In a race that feautured just six cautions, the action started early. Ron Hornaday, Jr. and Kyle Busch tangled in a three-wide battle with the lap down truck of Johnny Chapman, sending both the Hornaday's No. 33 Chevrolet and Busch's No. 18 Toyota up the track and brushing the outside wall. But that wasn't the end of the incident between the two--an upset Busch went after Hornaday and wrecked him, sending the No. 33 hard into the outside wall and trashing both trucks. Busch was parked by NASCAR and called to the sanctioning body's hauler immediately following the conclusion of the race. The meeting lasted less than five minutes, but the two will meet Saturday morning at 8:45 AM EDT (7:45 AM local time) to discuss the incident further.
"I've been wrecked four weeks in a row [including Sprint Cup races at Talladega and Martinsville] and finally I've just had enough of it," Busch said. "Sorry it was Ron Hornaday and he's going after a championship, but the fact of the matter is you can't place all the blame on one person--there were two people that got into it to begin with and there's two people that ended it."
The incident included major points implications for Hornaday, who is now mathematically eliminated from the championship battle, 48 points behind leader Austin Dillon.
"I think Kyle definitely showed his immaturity, and why he's just one of those guys that just can't stand to lose and [is] just a poor loser," Kevin Harvick, Owner of the No. 33 Chevrolet said in Victory Lane. "Unfortunate for Ron. It's too bad that a guy over here trying to win races got in the middle of the championship fight. At some point, he'll feel the pain."
Hornaday, however, wasn't the only driver to experience championship troubles Friday night. With just a handful of laps remaining, James Buescher's No. 31 Chevrolet ran out of fuel and he was forced to settle for a 19th-place finish, two laps down. Austin Dillon now holds a 20 point lead over Johnny Sauter and can clinch the championship with a 16th-place finish in the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway in two weeks.

News & Notes Texas

Biffle Takes Sprint Cup Pole at Texas
Greg Biffle took the pole (and the customary Texas rifle) for the AAA Texas 500 with a qualifying lap of 27.873 seconds on Friday afternoon at Texas Motor Speedway. Biffle's Ford will be joined on the front row by Roush Fenway Racing teammate David Ragan, whom he beat by one one-thousandth of a second for the top spot. RFR's Matt Kenseth will start third, while the Chevrolets of Paul Menard and Tony Stewart rounded out the top five.
David Reutimann qualified sixth in his Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota. Point leader Carl Edwards took the seventh spot, with Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, and Regan Smith rounding out the top 10.
Chase drivers outside the top 10 include Jimmie Johnson (11th), Kurt Busch (14th), Dale Earnhardt, Jr. (16th), Kyle Busch (17th), Kevin Harvick (21st), Jeff Gordon (23rd), Ryan Newman (24th) and Denny Hamlin (28th). Three drivers did not qualify for the race, including David Stremme, David Starr, and Reed Sorenson.
Sadler Snags Nationwide Series Pole
Elliott Sadler outran Kyle Busch to take the pole position for Saturday's O'Reilly Auto Parts Challenge. Sadler posted a lap time of 28.978 en route to the top spot. Joey Logano qualified third, with points leader Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Clint Bowyer rounding out the top 5.
Brad Keselowski, Brian Scott, Carl Edwards, Sam Hornish, Jr., and Trevor Bayne round out the top 10. Erik Darnell, Mark Green, Matt Carter, Johnny Chapman, and Dennis Setzer all failed to qualify.
It's Official: Martin to MWR in 2012
Michael Waltrip Racing officially announced that Mark Martin will be behind the wheel of the No. 00 Aaron's Toyota for 25 races in 2012 and 2013 with a sponsor's option for 2014, beginning with the 2012 Daytona 500. He will share the "Aaron's Dream Machine" with Waltrip, who will run a few other races, including the other restrictor plate races and the Cup race at Kentucky Speedway, which is Waltrip's home track. Martin will replace David Reutimann in the car. The remaining races on the schedule are pending sponsorship and a driver for those events has not been named.
Waltrip said that he's excited to have "a future Hall of Famer" come to the team, and that the entire deal took just three weeks to put together because everyone was on board almost from the start. Waltrip said that it is a rare and special opportunity for his still young race team. "It's very rare that a young organization gets an opportunity to hire a driver with Mark's incredible talent, experience and insight into what it takes to be a winner. Mark will be competitive, but also a great teammate to Clint [Bowyer], Martin [Truex, Jr.] and me," said Waltrip.
Martin said that he's thankful for the opportunity to drive for at least two more years, and he's also looking forward to the chance "to make fun of myself" in a new marketing campaign for Aaron's. "This is like a rebirth. I just can't explain how excited I am to get to work," said Martin, who will end his tenure at Hendrick Motorsports at the end of the season. Kasey Kahne will replace Martin in the No. 5 Chevrolet next year.
Aaron's CEO Ken Butler called Martin's signing "a dream come true for Aaron's and noted that the company has "lots of plans for Mark that I'm sure Aaron's customers will enjoy."
Martin has 40 wins in 827 Cup races; only 16 drivers have more. Martin's win total ranks fifth among active drivers.
Danica Patrick Announces 2012 Cup Plans
Danica Patrick and Stewart-Haas Racing announced their 2012 plans for the No. 10 GoDaddy.com Chevrolet on Friday at Texas. Patrick chose the number because it was her number when she raced go-karts as a youngster and has always been her favorite number, so she jumped at the chance to have it on her Cup car.
Patrick's first Cup race will be the Daytona 500 in February. She will also race at Darlington, Bristol in the night race, Atlanta, Chicago, Dover, Texas, and Phoenix in the fall. Car owner Tony Stewart explained that the track selection was made to maximize Patrick's learning curve on a variety of tracks, mainly at places where she doesn't have previous experience. The team also left the possibility open for two more races, which they will determine next year. Most noticeably absent is the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis, but Stewart explained that Patrick has many, many laps of experience at the track, and the goal was to help Patrick get ready for a full-time Cup schedule in 2013. Also absent is Pocono, where the Nationwide Series does not run.
Sponsor GoDaddy.com will be on the car for each of Patrick's starts, and Stewart said that he would like to run the car for the full season so the team can build toward the 2013 season. That is contingent on sponsorship for the remaining 26 races, and no driver has been named for additional events.
Austin Dillon Ready for Nationwide Series in 2012 in No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet
Richard Childress Racing announced 2012 Nationwide Series plans for Austin Dillon at Texas on Friday. Dillon will compete for Rookie of the Year honors and the points title in the No. 3 AdvoCare Chevrolet.
Childress said that the decision to run the number 3 was one that he considered carefully. Dale Earnhardt, Jr. was the last driver to race the No. 3 Nationwide car at RCR, when he won at Daytona in July of 2010. He said that Dillon chose the number because Childress ran it in the Cup Series before turning to car ownership and putting Dale Earnhardt behind the wheel. Childress says that there are no plans to run that stylized No. 3 in the Sprint Cup Series.
AdvoCare, a health and wellness company, joins the team for their first season of full-time car sponsorship. The company sponsored the Sprint Cup race at Atlanta this fall and wanted to be more involved in motorsports.
Kenny Wallace Set to Make History Saturday
When Kenny Wallace takes the green flag for tonight's O'Reilly Auto Parts Challenge, he will set a new mark for all-time starts in the NASCAR Nationwide Series with 520, passing Jason Keller for the record. Wallace tied Keller's mark two weeks ago in Charlotte.
Wallace made his first start in 1988 running for Dale Earnhardt at Martinsville, where he started 26th and finished 11th. He was the 1989 Rookie of the Year in the then Busch Series and has since gone on to score nine wins through 519 starts. An injury late in 1991 kept Wallace from contending for the series title, which he lost to Bobby Labonte by just 74 markers, winning at Volusia County and Loudon. He is also a three-time Nationwide Series Most Popular Driver.
In addition to his 519 Nationwide Series starts, Wallace has 344 Cup Series starts and 11 Truck Series starts; his total of 874 national touring series starts is 14th overall. Perhaps Wallace's most memorable Cup race was at Talladega in 2000, when he finished a career-best second pushing Dale Earnhardt to his last career victory. Wallace will start 18th on Saturday.
