Advocare 500 Postponed by Rain
It was a fear that most everyone in the NASCAR community had going into Sunday. Because of the impending threat of rains from Tropical Storm Lee moving into the Hampton, Georgia area, NASCAR moved up the start of the race to 7:30 pm EDT in response to the threat. That was the furthest that they could move up the start and not completely inconvenience the fans coming to the event. A decent crowd was on hand, but rains fell off and on throughout the day on Sunday, resulting in the jet dryers getting an extra workout.
A shower relatively close to the scheduled start of the race resulted in the start being delayed while the track was dried. The crews were making substantial progress on the track drying, but another shower moved through around 9:20 pm and caused NASCAR to "lose the track." Mike Helton explained that they would have to wait out the shower, then start the drying process over again from square one. While in the broadcast booth with ESPN's commentators, Helton said that it would take between three and three and a half hours to get the track completely dry, resulting in a start time around 12:30am or even later. Helton described this start time as being unfavorable to all concerned. Plus, there would be a chance of even more rain later in the evening.
As a result, NASCAR officially postponed Sunday night's running of the Advocare 500. Normally, NASCAR rules dictate that the race be run on the next available day. However, Monday looks to be a complete washout in Hampton. Forecasts predict heavy rains and wind all day with the potential for up to five inches of rain and flash flooding. As a safety precaution, the race has been delayed to 11am on Tuesday morning. The race will be televised live on ESPN. Atlanta Motor Speedway has announced that all tickets, credentials and pit passes will be honored on Tuesday morning. The garage is scheduled to open at 9am for final adjustments However, even that time is iffy, since the rains from Tropical Storm Lee are not forecasted to have cleared the track by that point.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: In 1990, the Atlanta Journal 500 was all set to be a duel for the championship between Dale Earnhardt and Mark Martin. However, the title chase ended anti-climatically. What happened?
Friday's Answer:
Q: The first race on Atlanta Motor Speedway's current configuration was the Reese's 400k, the season finale for the ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde Series. That race came to an epic duel where Harris Devane picked up his one and only ARCA victory. However, that wasn't the end of the craziness. What happened after the start-finish line?
A: Devane won the race in a three-wide race to the line between himself, Frank Kimmel and Andy Hillenburg. Right after the start-finish line, Kimmel brushed up against Hillenburg, causing Hillenburg's No. 80 to spin and hit the wall in Turn 1. A very exciting finish on a GWC. The GWC and finish can be seen in this clip. Dr. Jerry Punch and Benny Parsons have the call for ESPN. Note that this clip also features the hilarious "shot out of a canyon" line from Parsons. Always good for a laugh.
