At the Track: Practice Updates
by Phil Allaway

Thursday at Daytona International Speedway was marked by periods of heavy rain, especially in the early afternoon.  As a result, the opening practice sessions for both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series were washed out completely.

Fortunately, the rains stopped around 4 PM EDT, allowing for the jet dryers to get on track to dry the 2.5-mile tri-oval.  NASCAR amended the schedule so that the Nationwide Series would get one 45 minute practice session.  Following a ten minute break, the Sprint Cup Series took to the track for a 45 minute session.

Nationwide Series Practice

In the shortened Nationwide Series practice, Joey Logano turned in the fastest lap at a time of 45.880 seconds (196.164 mph).  He was followed up closely by Brad Keselowski with a time of 45.882 seconds (196.155 mph).  The two-car drafts were out in force from the moment the track opened until the red and black flags flew.  Most of the teams chose not to run single-car runs at all.  Most that did are go-or-go home teams, but there were some exceptions.  For example, Blake Koch's car could not push for more than a half a lap without the engine temperature reaching 250 degrees.  As a result, he mainly did single-car runs as well.

By no means was the practice session uneventful.  Just a couple of minutes after the track opened for practice, Michael Annett and Brian Scott had a coming together in Turn 1.  Annett's No. 62 hit the wall, while Scott's No. 11 spun to the apron, then back up the track.  Since the crash happened on their first timed laps of the session, neither driver officially set a time and will be qualifying first tomorrow afternoon.

Later on, Kevin Harvick, Inc. teammates Elliott Sadler and Clint Bowyer were practicing their tandem drafting when they approached the duo of Jeremy Clements and Derrike Cope.  Suddenly and without warning, Cope drifted up the track directly in front of Bowyer and Sadler.  Sadler ended up hooking Bowyer, who spun to the apron, then back across the track, breaking his splitter in the process.  Then, to add insult to injury, the car became stuck in the mud inside of Turn 4 due to the recent heavy rains.  Bowyer will go to a back-up car, and Sadler's team will repair the No. 2.

Top 10 Speeds:

1. No. 20 Joey Logano             45.880 seconds, 196.164 mph
2. No. 22 Brad Keselowski       45.882 seconds, 196.155 mph
3. No. 32- Reed Sorenson       45.967 seconds, 195.793 mph
4. No. 38- Jason Leffler           45.968 seconds, 195.788 mph
5. No. 2- Elliott Sadler             46.234 seconds, 194.662 mph
6. No. 33- Clint Bowyer           46.234 seconds, 194.662 mph
7. No. 16- Trevor Bayne         46.270 seconds, 194.510 mph
8. No. 6- Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. 46.271 seconds, 194.510 mph
9. No. 9- Tony Stewart           46.283 seconds, 194.456 mph
10. No. 4- Kevin Harvick        46.283 seconds, 194.456 mph

Sprint Cup Series Practice

Sprint Cup Series practice was more of the same that we saw in Nationwide Series practice, just with faster speeds.  Marcos Ambrose turned in the fastest lap of practice with a massive push from teammate AJ Allmendinger.  Ambrose's lap of 45.133 seconds (199.411 mph) raised some eyebrows, but Sprint Cup Series Director John Darby is comfortable with the speeds for now.

The top 32 teams focused on tandem drafting during the session.  J.J. Yeley did a little of both tandem drafting and running by himself.  However, out of the drivers who exclusively did solo runs, Trevor Bayne was the fastest of them (34th overall with a lap of 49.110 seconds, 183.262 mph).  If the time sheets hold in qualifying on Friday, Joe Nemechek, Tony Raines and Geoff Bodine are the slowest of the drivers not locked into the field.  Kevin Conway and Travis Kvapil are also not necessarily safe, either.

Of course, there were still a couple of incidents during the sessions.  Kasey Kahne rubbed against the outside wall in Turn 1, causing minimal damage to the right side of his Red Bull Toyota that the crew will repair.  Kevin Conway, driving the No. 97 ExtenZe Toyota for NEMCO Motorsports, had a spin exiting Turn 2 during the session, however, no damage was done to the Camry.

Top 10 Speeds:

1. No. 9- Marcos Ambrose  45.133 seconds, 199.411 mph
2. No. 43- AJ Allmendinger 45.135 seconds, 199.402 mph
3. No. 22- Kurt Busch        45.346 seconds, 198.474 mph
4. No. 2- Brad Keselowski 45.347 seconds, 198.470 mph
5. No. 5- Mark Martin        45.435 seconds, 198.085 mph
6. No. 24- Jeff Gordon      45.435 seconds, 198.085 mph
7. No. 33- Clint Bowyer     45.481 seconds, 197.885 mph
8. No. 31- Jeff Burton        45.481 seconds, 197.885 mph
9. No. 29- Kevin Harvick    45.522 seconds, 197.707 mph
10. No. 27- Paul Menard     45.526 seconds, 197.689 mph

Stewart Haas Racing Not Likely To Expand In 2012

In a day and age where multi-car teams have become the norm, Stewart Haas Racing is part of an ever shrinking minority with just two Cup entries. But the goal of Tony Stewart has always been to expand his operation from two teams to four one day. But that expansion, according to Stewart, is not likely to happen next year.

"I would think so. We're kind of in that crunch time of the year where if a package was going to happen, it would pretty much be that the wheels would have to be in motion by now."

Nevertheless, Stewart said SHR already has the infrastructure in place to expand, if need be.

"The good thing is that our shop is set up and capable of doing a three-car team," Stewart said. "It's not like we have to go build a building just to do it. We have that side of it in place and have made provisions to do it, if something were to come about."

Dale, Jr. To Carry Special Paint Scheme At Daytona

On Independence Day weekend, in recent years, Dale Earnhardt, Jr.'s No. 88 National Guard team has had a tradition of a special paint scheme for the Daytona July race, and this year is no exception.

Since 2008, the National Guard and the No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports car Earnhardt, Jr. has run a camouflaged paint scheme for the July race at Daytona International Speedway. The paint scheme pays tribute to Independence Day and the men and women who have served in the National Guard. This year's National Guard Heritage/AMP Energy Chevy will continue the tradition by featuring the modern uniform pattern that is currently issued to Guard Soldiers serving in Afghanistan.

The Guard offers many rewards for one's service, like providing excellent educational and financial benefits and paid specialized training in more than 200 career fields.

Kurt Busch Discusses His Divorce

Lately, on the track, Kurt Busch has been on a roll in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, fresh off of a win at Sonoma, it seemed as if all was well in the world of Kurt Busch.

But things in his personal life have gone slightly askew. In the media room at Daytona today, Kurt Busch acknowledged that he was going through a divorce and he hopes that everyone will respect his privacy in his personal life. "Although we (Busch and his wife, Eva) are no longer together and are legally separated, we appreciate privacy in this situation," Busch said. "All I want to say on this is we are going though the process of terminating our marriage, but we are doing it with respect for each other and we'll always be friends."

"When you win, people want to bring you down," Busch said. "While drivers sometimes have a beef with certain media members, the vast majority are hard-working and responsible individuals trying to do their job the best way they can. I realize I'm an entity, but I'm also a person."

Busch was asked if his personal situation has had any affect on his performance on the track this season. He ranks fourth in the Sprint Cup standings with nine top-10s in 16 races, but he also has shown moments of frustration on the team radio when he was unhappy with his car.

"A lot of things are happening on a personal level," Busch said. "But our performance on the race track is the best way for putting all that aside."

Jimbo Fisher Named Grand Marshal for Coke Zero 400

Florida State football coach Jimbo Fisher has been named the Grand Marshal for Saturday's Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway. Fisher will give the starting command, be introduced at the driver's meeting, participate in driver introductions and get to ride around the track during pace laps before the start of the 160-lap race. Fisher was 10-4 last season in his first campaign coaching the Seminoles. It was the team's first 10-win season since 2003.

"I'm extremely honored and excited," Fisher said. "I've been a huge NASCAR fan my entire life. Being able to go to Daytona, where it all started in racing, is a very special privilege and something I'm really looking forward to. I consider this a great honor and I want to thank Coca-Cola for allowing me to represent Florida State."

Speedway Will Hold Largest Fireworks Display in Southeast

The Daytona International Speedway will once again hold one of the largest firework displays in the Southeast in honor of July 4. The display will take place after the conclusion of Saturday's Coke Zero 400. It will shoot from 15 different locations along the track's Superstretch and will last 15 minutes. The finale will last 1 minute, 30 seconds and will include over 2,000 different pieces. The show is set to include around 11,000 individual explosions.

Watkins Glen Will Host Major Music Festival

Watkins Glen International will host a major music festival for the first time in more than 40 years. The track will host Super Ball IX with headline artist Phish on July 1-3. The three-day event will feature activities, attractions and numerous performances by Phish.

It will be the first major concert Watkins Glen has held since it held Summer Jam in 1973. The event involved bands like The Grateful Dead and The Allman Brothers. Tickets start at $200 and include admission for the entire weekend and on-site camping.

Frontstretch Folio: Coke Zero 400
by Beth Lunkenheimer

This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Daytona International Speedway for the Coke Zero 400. Saturday's race will be the 17th of 36 races this season, and will be broadcast live July 2nd, at 7:30 PM ET on TNT and 6:30 PM ET on MRN Radio. Drivers will compete for 160 laps (400 miles) before taking the checkered flag.

Records and Facts

Bill Elliott holds the track qualifying record, with a lap of 42.783 sec at 210.364 mph during qualifying for the 1987 Daytona 500 in what was the final year before restrictor plates were introduced. In the race, Elliott led 104 laps and took the lead for the final time with three laps remaining to score his second Daytona 500 victory.

Bobby Allison holds the record for the fastest 400 mile race run at Daytona, with a speed of 173.473 mph in the 1980 Firecracker 400. Allison led 63 laps on the way to victory lane over David Pearson. Dale Eanhardt, Buddy Baker and Richard Petty rounded out the top 5. The victory was the second of four for Allison during the 1980 season. He finished sixth in points thanks to 12 top 5s, 18 top-10 finishes and 13 DNFs.

Kevin Harvick is the defending winner of this event, leading 28 of 166 laps to win the 2010 Coke Zero 400 by a slim 0.092 sec. over Kasey Kahne. Jeff Gordon finished third followed by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Jeff Burton to round out the top 5. The win was Harvick's second of three victories in 2010, where he went on to grab 16 top 5s, 26 top 10s, and an average finish of ninth in 36 races; he finished third in the standings.

Say What?!

"Daytona is such a different race now with the new surface.  It is all about pure speed and partnering up with someone.  I know this weekend I don't want to finish second like I did in the 500.  I will be doing everything I can to win this race.  The 500 in February was the closest I have been to winning at Daytona in a Cup car and I really, really want to win there.  That would be cool." -Carl Edwards

"Here, the physical demand isn't that big of deal. You can run around here all day long and not break a sweat, really. Once you get down into the nitty gritty of the race and try to play the chess game that goes on all day, you've got to really pick and choose your spots, and think all the time about going here or there and teaming up with a guy. I don't know if you call it racing, or what to call it, really. But it's definitely a different dynamic here at Talladega and Daytona, now, than what we've had in the past." -Kyle Busch

"Daytona we're excited about. Peter (crew chief Peter Sospenzo) keeps telling me the car is going to be better than it was for the 500.  But we don't need it too much better, when you think about it.  We had a great car in the 500, finished third, and could've kept passing cars if the finish line was another hundred yards down. Hopefully, it is a little bit better and we can go and work with some people." -David Gilliland

Keepin' It Short: Celebrating 50 Years With Some of NASCAR's Elder Statesmen
by Mike Neff

Flamboro Speedway in Hamilton, Ontario has been hosting races since 1961 and this Friday, for Canada Day, they'll hold a race that will include three of the more recognizable names in NASCAR. Jimmy Spencer, Ken Schrader and Ernie Irvan are set to race in Thunder Cars, the intermediate division at Flamboro. Sterling Marlin was originially scheduled to compete in the event but unforeseen family obligations have prevented him from making the trip so Ernie Irvan is happily filling in his spot. Saturday night the Late Models will take to the track for the second night of racing over the Canada Day weekend.

Flamboro started out as a dirt track in 1960 but was quickly paved and has been providing outstanding racing ever since. It is a one-third-mile oval with 12 degree banked corners that has been receiving quite a few upgrades over the last couple of decades. In 1998, the track was resurfaced and restructured, and in 2004, Lucas Oil Products poured a large amount of money into the track installing new lights, a new scoreboard and giving the facility a facelift with a complete repainting. Two years later, the track had a VIP area constructed at the top of the first corner stands. Go-Karts received their own racing surface in 2008 as a track was added to the infield. The track has one of the largest seating capacities in Canada with over 7,000 permanent seats located on both straights and in the pits.

In 2002, the Super Sprints came to Flamboro and established what the ultimate speed around the third-mile would be. Most of the cars were in the low 14 second range when they qualified for their event with Dorman Snyder turning the first lap under 14 seconds at 13.97. Later that season Rick Baker turned a lap on July 6th of 13.89 seconds which is still the fastest lap in the history of the speedway.

The Race of Champions Friday night will be the first time a Sprint Cup driver has competed at Flamboro. It is an invitation only event with a field that'll be filled by proven champions and applicants who are deemed worthy of competing in the race. J.R. Fitzpatrick, a name familiar to many NASCAR fans was the first official entrant in the event. There won't be any points for this race, it is all about pride. There's no question that there will be beating and banging and some outstanding racing in both the main event and the qualifying heats. For our Canadian fans, if you're in the Hamilton, Ontario area, pay Flamboro a visit Friday night; you won't be disappointed.

Whelen All-American National Championship Update

The race for the National Championship is about to get down to nickels and dimes. Philip Morris will max out on his number of point races this week at 18, so he won't be able to add large numbers to his total after this coming week. Keith Rocco has been at the magic 18 number for a couple of weeks and that has allowed Morris to make up the ground between the two and now they are in a virtual dead heat. Rocco ran one race this past week and did pick up the win but he was only able to add 25 points to his total, giving him 590 points.

Morris ran two races at Motor Mile Speedway this week, scoring a second in the first race, leading a majority of the second before having his left rear tire valve stem knocked out by Lee Pulliam who went on to secure the win, making it a sweep for him. Morris has retaken the points lead with 599 markers while Pulliam is not too far behind in third with 582 points to his credit. Morris and Pulliam have run the same number of races and have the same number of top 5s and top 10s but Morris has one more win. It is going to be a battle to the end unless someone can get to 18 max point wins.

C. E. Falk, III maintained his grip on the fourth spot in the standings by winning his fourth race of the season and scoring two top 5s this past week at Langley Speedway. Falk added 81 points to his season total which now sits at 490. Falk could play a role in this title chase before it is all said and done because he only has 14 races under his belt. If he's able to score maximum points over the next four races he'll be in the same point territory as the three leaders.

Nate Monteith ran in three races this past week but was unable to pull into victory lane, adding only one top 5 and increasing his point total by a mere 52 points. Monteith has his work cut out for him if he wants to be a player in the hunt. Frank Deiny, Jr. is still the only driver in the top 10 without a win, coming close this past week with a second to Pulliam at Motor Mile. Brandon Davis scored a win in his one race this past week but the lack of a full field only let him add 37 points to his total, getting up to 408 points for the year.

1) Philip Morris – 17 races – 11 wins – 14 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 599 points
2) Keith Rocco – 22 races – 10 wins – 15 top 5s – 19 top 10s – 590 points
3) Lee Pulliam – 17 races – 10 wins – 14 top 5s – 15 top 10s – 582 points
4) C.E. Falk, III – 14 races – 4 wins – 12 top 5s – 13 top 10s – 490 points
5) Nate Monteith – 16 races – 6 wins – 13 top 5s – 13 top 10s – 430 points
6) Frank Deiny Jr. – 16 races – 0 wins – 10 top 5s – 14 top 10s – 426 points
7) Brandon Davis – 11 races – 6 wins – 10 top 5s – 10 top 10s – 408 points
8) Davin Scites – 14 races – 1 win – 11 top 5s – 12 top 10s – 391 points
9) Bill Leighton, Jr. – 11 races – 2 wins – 11 top 5s – 11 top 10s – 380 points
10) Daniel Pope III – 14 races – 3 wins – 12 top 5s – 13 top 10s – 377 points

**Under the points structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 20. Second place receives two fewer points, and so-on through the field. Race winners receive an additional five bonus points. For example, if there are 20 cars, the winner receives 45 points, second gets 38 and third 36. If there are 15 cars, the winner received 35 points, second gets 28 and third 26. The top 18 races count towards the National Championship for a driver. A perfect season for a driver would be 18 race wins with 20 car fields which equates to 810 points. The first driver to reach 810 points is declared the National Champion in the event of a tie.**

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
The 1992 Pepsi 400 at Daytona was won by Ernie Irvan, part of a stretch in which Irvan won three out of four restrictor plate races.  However, there is something else that this particular race is known for.  What is it?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q:   Just because the checkered flag has already fallen doesn't necessarily mean that the on-track action is over for the day.  In the 1980 Firecracker 400, there was a serious crash that occurred while the leaders were on their cool down lap.  What happened?

A:  Phil Finney, driving the No. 04 Oldsmobile, appeared to simply lose control coming off of Turn 4 when he was coming down to take the checkered flag.  Finney spun through the grass before pit-in (this was paved over by 1985).  The car got airborne and slammed into the combination of an Armco guardrail and an earthen bank.  The car spun 10-20 feet off the ground and just missed the supports holding up the Unocal 76 ball before slamming down on pit road.  The crash can be seen in this clip.  Jim McKay and Sam Posey have the call for ABC.

Finney suffered neck, rib and foot injuries in the crash that put him out of action for years.  He never started another Cup race, although he did attempt one a couple of years later.

Michael Waltrip Racing to Field Grand-Am team in 2012

Michael Waltrip's love affair with sports car racing continues.  On the heels of multiple appearances in endurance races overseas for AF Corse, Waltrip seems to be likely to throw his team into sports cars full-time domestically.

SiriusXM's Dave Moody is reporting that Waltrip, along with partner Rob Kauffman, are in Daytona Beach meeting with Grand-Am CEO/co-founder Jim France about potentially entering his team into the Rolex Sports Car Series.  It is still relatively early in the game, but more than likely, it is a go.  Heading up the team will be Steve Hallam, a former Formula One engineer who currently serves as Michael Waltrip Racing's Executive Vice President for Competition.

Such a move surrounding Waltrip entering sports cars full-time has been rumored for months.  Waltrip seems to take a lot of enjoyment from his racing in Europe and the Middle East behind the wheel of (mainly) a Ferrari F430.  The 24 Hours of Le Mans earlier this month was the first time that Waltrip and Kaufmann had driven a Ferrari 458 Italia.

There is no indication as to whether Waltrip's team will focus on the Daytona Prototype or Grand Touring (GT) class at this point.  However, Grand-Am declared the Ferrari 458 Italia eligible to compete in the series months ago (they announced the eligibility in a press conference at the Rolex 24 at Daytona in January).  The original expectation was that a team could have had a 458 on track by April, but no one has entered one yet.

Will Kimmel to Make Nationwide Debut at Kentucky

The Southern Indiana News and Tribune is reporting that Will Kimmel, the nephew of nine-time ARCA Racing Series Champion Frank Kimmel, will be making his Nationwide Series debut next weekend in Kentucky Speedway in the Feed the Children 300.  He will be driving the No. 39 Ford Mustang for Go Green Racing.

Kimmel is excited for his first crack at the Nationwide Series.

"The level of competition goes way up when you race at that level," Kimmel said.  "I hope to run good and run the whole 200 laps. I'm going to have to race my butt off to finish 25th."

It might a tough road for Kimmel to have a decent finish, but he will not have to worry about qualifying on speed.  Go Green Racing's No. 39 is currently 26th in owners' points, 35 points ahead of Morgan Shepherd's No. 89 in 31st.  However, three teams in front of the No. 39 have not attempted all the races, so they are not locked in.  The final locked-in team is the No. 52 for Means Motorsports, which is 33rd in owners' points, 84 behind the No. 39.

Last year, Kimmel made his Camping World Truck Series debut in a No. 44 Ford fielded by his father (and Frank's brother) Bill.  Carrying sponsorship from Lucas Oil, Kimmel stayed out of trouble and moved up from his 36th starting spot to finish two laps down in 21st.

What's Vexing Vito
by Vito Pugliese

Walking through the garage area at Michigan International Speedway a couple of weeks ago, I was struck by a number of things, the least of which was the tool crib of the No. 42 Earnhardt Ganassi Racing Team.  One thing that is apparent, you can definitely tell that Dale Earnhardt, Jr. is very close to getting back to the shades of his former self again.  The quality of Pit Lizard seen loitering around the No. 88 AMP Energy hauler and garage stall was markedly improved over the past two seasons.

Speaking of lady friends, note how Kurt Busch's turnaround coincides nicely with his new love interest Patricia Driscoll, head of the Armed Forces Foundation.  Busch filed for divorce from wife Eva earlier this season.  Busch need not worry about any on-track incidents with anybody either; Ms. Driscoll also heads up Frontline Defense Systems, LLC – a private security firm and Department of Defense contractor.  Anytime a DoD contractor cites "providing solutions" in their mission statement, it is usually PC-speak meaning that bad guys get deleted.

While walking the roof over looking pit road at MIS two weekends ago, I noticed Richard Childress spotting for his four teams, all the while being approached by more than a couple of fans "congratulating" him on his fine for punching Kyle Busch.  I think what I was more startled by, was the practice of ironing a crease in ones jeans – particularly Wranglers. That sure is a lot of preparation and presentation for a $20 pair of pants. I'm not putting them down, but maybe if RC loosened up and dialed down the starch a bit, he wouldn't be throwing hay makers in the garage area.

During the fracas in Turn 11 on Lap 39 (what a coincidence – read on) at Infineon Raceway, it was completely lost on the announcers that Juan Pablo Montoya took out Ryan Newman – again.  This, after Newman popped JPM in the nose during a meeting regarding previous rough housing on the track, which led to a rumored Montoya lawsuit against the driver irreverently referred to by some as "Bulldozer."

We're not in Kansas anymore that's for sure. Prior to the start of the Toyota/Save Mart 350k, the National Anthem was performed by a cast member of Beach Blanket Babylon, clad in a massive wig, cartoonish make up, and a miniature hat, not unlike the one worn by Damon Wayans during his "Men On Film" skit on In Living Color.  Its the National Anthem – a little semblance of respect might be in order, and doing so in some freak show get up is a bit disrespectful.  NASCAR needs to tighten things up a bit when it comes to that.  At least they haven't gone NBC and edited out "Under God" during the Pledge of Allegiance as they did during a children's rendition of it prior to the start of the US Open.

The Good, Bad, & The Ugly About Twitter In NASCAR
Shakedown Session
by Brody Jones

Unless NASCAR fans have taken residence under a rock, it's very hard to ignore the presence the social networking site, Twitter, and their role in the world of NASCAR.  In a world where NASCAR fans have short attention spans, Twitter has become a source of news, information, and communication between drivers, crew members, and those who work in the world of NASCAR Media.  Media personalities such as Jeff Gluck and Bob Pockrass have carved themselves a niche audience of sorts on Twitter.  Many of the NASCAR drivers have their own Twitter accounts, with a few exceptions.  There are also crew members who have jumped on board the Twitter phenomenon.

One such crew member was former Red Bull Racing Team and Turner Motorsports employee Jeremy Fuller, who unleashed a bit of a controversy on Twitter recently.  Following Sunday's Toyota/Save Mart 350k, Fuller posted a picture of a car with a homemade rainbow-colored sign that indicated the car was headed to the San Francisco Pride parade, which is a celebration of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender movements.  Fuller posted in response to the sign, "This is way (sic) I don't live here!" on his Twitter.  The end result of this Twitter post resulted in Fuller's contractor agreement being terminated with the Red Bull Racing Team.  Agree or disagree with Fuller's comments, to publically post that comment on Twitter was, at best, an incredibly short-sighted comment to make about such a sensitive subject.

Fuller's comment brings to light a bit of a downside to the Twitter phenomenon.  Drivers, crew members, and media members all are in a position of having to watch what they post on Twitter for fear of the potential repercussions that may come from an insensitive comment.  Anyone that works in NASCAR or is involved with the sport in any way needs to be fully aware that what they post might be interpreted as a joke to some friends, but there are others in the sport that could very easily take offense to an off-color remark.

However, for the most part, Twitter has proven to be an effective way for NASCAR drivers to keep in touch with their friends in the industry, not to mention the millions and millions of fans in NASCAR nation.  Even Frontstretch is in on the social networking movement, with a Twitter page of our own.  Sure, there are fans who exist on Twitter for the sole purpose of "trolling" other drivers, trying to get any kind of reaction out of them, but for the most part, Twitter has become almost a sort of a necessary evil in the world of NASCAR.  While it can be tricky to keep Twitter posts under 140 characters, sometimes saying less is more on Twitter.

In a few cases, Twitter has provided NASCAR fans with news they wouldn't get otherwise.  Case in point, when Tim Andrews and his 2nd Chance Motorsports crew were callously left behind by team owner Rick Russell at Kansas, news of the story broke on the Twitter account of Tim Andrews.  Also, word of the Jennifer Jo Cobb and Rick Russell split at Bristol back in March traveled fast, thanks in part to the Twitter universe and the power of social networking.  Twitter has become a sort of instant news source for those working in the NASCAR media, and even for fans, that would be hard-pressed to come up with NASCAR news for some of the lower-end teams.

At the end of the day, one thing is evidently clear.  Twitter is here to stay in the world of NASCAR and while it remains to be seen if this is a good thing or a bad thing, the one thing that's known for sure is that its definitely an easy way to communicate with other drivers, fans, and others that work in the sport and, admittedly, it's a terrific source for news in the world of NASCAR.  So Tweet away, fans!

Hello, race fans.  Greetings from 30,000 feet.  Its once again time for The Critic's Annex, where I take an additional look at racing-related television programming.  Saturday afternoon was a doubleheader at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.  In addition to the Bucyrus 200 for the Nationwide Series that ran later in the day, the Rolex Sports Car Series raced at 11am local time as a prelude to the Nationwide race.

SPEED's usual on-air crew was on hand for the action from Road America.  And there was plenty of it.

There were more pre-race interviews than normal, which I thought was interesting at the time I was viewing the race.  Then, I remembered that it was at Road America.  Laps behind the pace car take four minutes or more on average, so they could fit in more content than normal just because of that.  Regardless of their reasoning, it was still good to see.

As you probably know by now, Saturday's Rolex Sports Car Series race will go down in the record books as simply "the race where a Camaro left the park."  About five laps into the race, the brakes apparently failed on the No. 07 Chevrolet Camaro GT.R driven by Gunter Schaldach.  Schaldach described it as such:  "I went to brake for Turn 1, and nothing happened."  As a result, Schaldach ran into the back of the Visit Florida No. 40 Mazda RX-8, then ran through the sand trap, and crashed into the tire barriers.  However, since Schaldach hit the tires at what seemed to be 120 mph, the impact lifted the Camaro into the air high enough for him to clear the catch fence and roll down the other side.  A clip of SPEED's coverage of the crash and replays can be found here.  Even better, a clip of the crash from the in-car camera installed by the Banner Racing team can be seen here on co-driver Oliver Gavin's YouTube page.  Thankfully, Schaldach walked away from the wreck and the car almost looks good enough that it could conceivably be used again after an overhaul.

The wreck, along with the extrication of Joe Foster from the Mazda and the repairs to the tire barrier and catch fence required a yellow that lasted almost half the race.  During that time, SPEED covered the pit stops that occurred during that time and brought viewers multiple interviews, including with Schaldach.  They also gave coverage of another incident that hampered the efforts of Aim Autosport's No. 61 (the car dug into the grass at pit-in as a result of a late call into the pits).

The SPEED on-air crew clearly did not want to jump to conclusions about what they were seeing and did not speculate on the conditions of either Schaldach or Foster.  They did show Schaldach walking through the trap in order to get back to the pits, so based on that (and the aforementioned interview that Jamie Howe did with Schaldach in the paddock), the booth was able to declare him good to go.  There didn't seem to be a lot of concern in the booth about Foster's condition, but SPEED did have a trump card in their favor.  Foster's No. 40 was carrying an in-car camera that was facing the drivers' seat.  That shot confirmed that Foster was awake, alert, talking to corner workers, and rather ticked off about the safety workers wanting to cut the roof off of the RX-8 to get Foster out.

Towards the end of the race, Scott Pruett was running away with the race as a result of the (once again) superior strategy that the team employed.  For those of you wondering, they got the lead because they executed an extra pit stop during the 55 minute full-course caution to swap Memo Rojas out of the driver's seat in favor of the all-powerful Scott Pruett.  The other contending teams had to perform driver changes under green on their final stops.  Then, Pruett used his nearly 30 years of top-fight experience to drive away from the pack.

As a result of Pruett's dominance, almost all of the focus of the last 30 minutes of the race was focused on GT, where all kinds of strategy was in play.  First, the Brumos Porsche No. 59 driven by Leh Keen was leading, but they had to pit with 15 minutes remaining for fuel.  The Magnus Racing No. 44 Porsche took over for a lap before pitting and handing the lead to the No. 88 Autohaus Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro GT.R of Jordan Taylor with a big lead.  Meanwhile, there was a heck of a race for positions two through six in class behind Taylor.  It was really quite exciting and SPEED covered it the right way.  Not all of those teams that were fighting for the class victory are usually in the fray, which made it that much better.  There were also a couple of on-track incidents that SPEED had to cut away briefly to show in the final ten minutes, but since everyone got back underway on their own, no yellow was thrown.

The downfall for Autohaus Motorsports was their placement on the track in relation to Scott Pruett.  As a result of the placement, the GT cars had to do an extra lap even after the two-hour time limit had been reached (I'd like to see the rule where it allows this).  As a result, Taylor's lead was gone within three turns and Spencer Pumpelly took over in the TRG No. 67.

Unfortunately, he ran low on fuel with just a couple of corners to go, gifting the class victory to the Marsh Racing No. 31 Chevrolet Corvette driven by Eric Curran and GM tester John Heinricy (Heinricy was subbing for regular driver Boris Said, who was at Infineon Raceway to drive the No. 51 for Phoenix Racing in the Sprint Cup race).  It was the first-ever victory for Marsh Racing at any level (remember, they used to be a part-time team in the now-Nationwide Series a few years back).

Post-race coverage was nowhere near as fulfilling as pre-race was.  There were post-race interviews with the DP class winners (Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas) and Eric Curran, who drove the final stint in the Whelen-sponsored No. 31 Chevrolet Corvette.  In addition, there were checks of the DP and GT point standings before SPEED left to get to coverage of Sprint Cup Practice from Infineon Raceway.

The lack of post-race coverage was sadly expected due to the fact that the race is timed and viewers would have had a general idea when the race was going to start and end.  Unfortunately, we can't do much about that when SPEED has NASCAR obligations.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this critique of the Rolex Sports Car Series 250 by Visit Florida telecast.  Next week, I'm covering the Friday afternoon Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge race at Road America which airs Saturday afternoon.  Until then, I hope that everyone has a great Fourth of July weekend and enjoys the action from Daytona.  Bye now.

The last time I sat down and watched a full ARCA race on a road course was nearly a decade ago at Watkins Glen.  So many shenanigans happened in the final few laps that John Finger won the race on a lap of his own.  Second-place Blaise Alexander beached his car in a sand trap with a lap to go.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:  Just because the checkered flag has already fallen doesn't necessarily mean that the on-track action is over for the day.  In the 1980 Firecracker 400, there was a serious crash that occurred while the leaders were on their cool down lap.  What happened?

Check back Friday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Wednesday's Answer:

Q:   Rick Wilson was a snakebit driver for much of his career in Winston Cup (and who now lives on as a call to cheers at various NASCAR gatherings (seriously)).  However, in 1988, he was one of the strongest drivers in the field.  However, he did something that proved to be his downfall in the Pepsi 400 and prevented himself from getting his first career win.  What was it?

A:  As sad as this sounds, Wilson's downfall was working with Bill Elliott.  Wilson's car was one of the strongest out there that day.  Meanwhile, Elliott had some issues that resulted in him nearly being lapped by Wilson.  Wilson ended up drafting Elliott for a while until a caution flew and allowed Elliott to drive all the way around the track.

Later, after a bad pitstop under the final caution put Wilson back in the pack, Wilson drafted behind Elliott and got to second, but could not get by him at the line.  It was the closest that Wilson ever got to winning a Cup race.

Thanks to Mark for drawing my attention to the fact that he gave the

To be honest, I don't follow hockey that closely that keep track of
each player that come and go. When you say it, there was an article
about him in my daily in conjunction with the final games and it was
mentioned that he played over here for a while.

I guess this guy was born in the US, so it's reasonable to judge mis-
spellings from an English perspective. But the name appear to be of
Slavic origin, and in Slavic language "c" represents /ts/ and "Novitzki"
and "Nowicki" would have the same pronounciation. (In Slavic languages,
"w" and "v" does not represent different phonemes.)

Thus, personally I would rule Nowicki as correct, as it's only a
misspelling.

No, he was born in Germany. But the contest is conducted in English,
where "Nowicki" would be pronounced "nowicky".

Novitzki certainly looks like a Germanified spelling of the Polish
Nowicki.

I don't know who answered Nowicki, but for myself, if I would only have
heard the name (without any knowledge of his German origin), I would
probably have spelled it Nowicki. Nonewithstanding the fact that most
English (and Swedish) people would pronounce that spelling differently.
Or in another words: if the person had given the answer in person in
your pub in Toronto, he would have been awarded full points, because
no one would have heard his spelling.

Sometimes when I encounter names of people in Anglo-America, I quite
stumped on how to pronounce them. I can easily spot the origin of the
name, and pronounce the name in that language. But guessing how it would
be corrupted in English is almost impossible. Sometimes, people don't
even know themselves. I know a guy from Wisconsin who's name is
Luetkehoelter, and I think he said different parts of the family
pronounce it differently.

Ah, but since we are conducting the quiz online, I have to assume that
the entrant would pronounce "Nowicki" as spelled.

Yep. Even native English-speakers often don't know.

> I know a guy from Wisconsin who's name is Luetkehoelter, and I think
> he said different parts of the family pronounce it differently.

Yep. Last time I was in Nevada, I took a cave tour (I like caves) in
a national park. This cave was called the Lehman Caves, and the guide
told us that two members of the family it was named after had been
there, and they pronounced the name differently (Lee-man and Lay-man).

Similarly, when Eleanor Roosevelt got married, she had to change from
pronouncing her name Rooz-uh-velt to Rose-uh-velt, because that's how
her new husband's branch of the family said it. (They were 5th
cousins once removed.)

Actually, the correct spelling of his surname is Nowitzki.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2011-01-17,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days. For further information see
my 2011-05-23 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI5GNM, QFTCI11, QFTCIMM)".

I wrote one of these rounds.

* Game 1, Round 7 - The Performing Arts in Canada

1. Which Canadian invention has been a boon to unilingual fans
of performing arts?

2. This organization has toured on every continent except Africa
-- where they're scheduled to perform in March -- and
Antarctica. They have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Who are they?

3. This Manitoba organization was founded in 1939, making it
the oldest continuously operating one of its type on the
continent. The word "Royal" was added to its name in 1953.
Name it.

4. Which Canadian novel has been adapted as an opera by composer
Poul Ruders?

5. Within 1 year, when was the Stratford Festival founded?

6. Name *either* the theater awards administered by the Ontario
Arts Council Foundation *or* the awards honouring theater,
dance, or opera granted by the Toronto Alliance for the
Performing Arts. (You don't need to say which award.)

7. Since 2001 the Toronto Symphony's music director (that is,
conductor) has been Peter Oundijian. Name any one of his
predecessors.

8. Name the Toronto-based baroque orchestra, winner of four
Juno awards for Best Classical Album, founded in 1979 by
Kenneth Solway and Susan Graves.

9. Emmy award winner Ronnie Burkett is best known for what
performing arts medium?

10. Other than being Toronto's only permanent black-light
puppetry troupe, what is the principal distinction of the
Famous People Players?

* Game 1, Round 8 - Biographies

The handout <http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/0108/bio.jpg>
shows covers of 16 books that were all to be found in the
Biography section at World's Biggest Bookstore when we were doing
our Christmas shopping. In a couple of cases the covers on the
handout are not the same ones that we saw at the bookstore, but
belong to other editions of the book.

In each case, we tell you which picture and you name the person
who's the *subject* of the biography. Naturally, if the name
appears on the cover then we have obscured it.

1. Book P.

2. Book A.

3. Book H.

4. Book L.

5. Book C. Two names required for this one -- as usual,
surnames will do.

6. Book M.

7. Book N.

8. Book G.

9. Book E.

10. Book J.

So books B, D, F, I, K, and O were the decoys. Identify their
subjects if you like for fun, but for no points.
