Trevor Bayne Released From Hospital, Will Miss Darlington

Roush Fenway Racing has announced that Daytona 500 champion Trevor Bayne has been released from the Mayo Clinic, after being admitted following the Nationwide Series race at Nashville Superspeedway for symptoms thought to be related to an insect bite sustained last month. Mayo Clinic neurologist Brian Crum, M.D. said Bayne "was admitted for nausea, fatigue, and vision impairment" and said the symptoms "appear to be the result of an inflammatory condition."

Bayne will not participate in this weekend's NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Darlington Raceway, with 18-year-old Chris Buescher continuing to sub for the ailing Bayne. Buescher finished 17th while subbing for Bayne last weekend in Richmond.

RFR says they expect Bayne to return to his driving duties sometime later this season, as his condition is said to be non-life threatening or career ending. They are unsure whether or not he will be behind the wheel of the No. 16 Ford next weekend at Dover International Speedway. Bayne's condition will continue to be monitored by Mayo Clinic doctors.

Brickyard Test Completed

Juan Pablo Montoya, Kurt Busch, Greg Biffle, Paul Menard, and Martin Truex, Jr. all competed in a Goodyear tire test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Tuesday and Wednesday. While temperatures weren't indicative of what the drivers will most likely be competing in come July—the temperature reached a high of 60 degrees—Menard said the team was able to learn a few things.

"Goodyear is trying a bunch of different things, and we hit on a couple things that will hopefully make a great race even better come July," said Menard. "It's a nice, cool day, and we'll come back in July and it'll be really hot, so times will be a lot slower. You have to take that into account in what you do as a driver and kind of set up trends that we learn today and tomorrow that we'll apply for July, for sure."

The Brickyard 400 is scheduled for Sunday, July 31st.

NASCAR, Manufacturers Meet in Detroit

On Tuesday, NASCAR met with Toyota, Dodge, Ford, and Chevrolet in Detroit to discuss ideas for their continued partnership in the industry. According to FoxSports.com Lee Spencer (http://msn.foxsports.com/nascar/story/NASCAR-manufacturer-meeting-lauded-by-both-050411), all sides said the meeting was "very productive" with "an open exchange".

The meeting lasted five hours at the Westin Hotel in Detroit, where NASCAR Vice President of Racing Operations Steve O'Donnell and Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton discussed the new design for the 2013 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series cars. The manufacturers present gave their input on the new models, with both NASCAR and the manufacturers working to make their cars more similar to the showroom versions.

The current state of the sport and furthering NASCAR's green initiatives were additional topics covered during the meeting.

Hendrick Motorsports Plane Crash Claims Settled

In 2004, a Hendrick Motorsports plane carrying 10 people crashed and killed every person on board. The plane crash, which killed four of team owner Rick Hendrick's family members, brought about lawsuits from family members and the team itself that had been pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals until recently.

Lawsuits from family members stated that they believed air-traffic controllers were responsible for the accident, and appealed a ruling from a U.S. District Court Judge in September that stated otherwise. All parties have since reached an undisclosed settlement.

Seeking money from the government included Linda Turner, widow of HMS General Manager Jeff Turner, and Dianne Dorton, widow of HMS engine builder Randy Dorton, and HMS to compensate for the settlements of family members of Scott Lathram, Tony Stewart's pilot at the time, and DuPont executive Joe Jackson.

Other victims of the plane crash included Rick Hendrick's son Ricky, brother John, and John's daughters Kimberly and Jennifer.

Speed to Compete in Indy 500

Former NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Red Bull Racing driver Scott Speed will be making his IZOD IndyCar Series debut in the Indianapolis 500 later this year, according to SPEED.com. Speed will attempt to qualify for the 33 car field for Dragon Racing, which debuted earlier this season in Long Beach with driver Paul Tracy. Dragon Racing is running a second car with Sam Schmidt Motorsports.

Speed lost his ride with RBR over the Sprint Cup Series offseason, later suing the team for breach of contract and filing for $6.5 million.

Say What?!

"It's a very narrow and challenging racetrack, especially for the speeds that we carry around there, now. We're looking forward to the challenge with our Doublemint Camry this weekend. You've really got to be able to get as close as you can to the wall in order to carry your momentum through the corners because you've got to make the straightaways as long as you can. The track is very narrow on entries and exits, so you're always trying to round the place as much as you can. It's very one-groovish. You can't really run side-by-side there. Anytime you get alongside somebody, you basically have to let them go. It's a very big give-and-take-type track. It's a lot harder to pass, now, with the fresh asphalt than it used to be. It's really aero-sensitive, now, to where it used to be more about mechanical grip and getting your car to handle well and handle over the bumps well and keep the tires on it. Now, you're restricted off the car in front of you and are trying to find some air, basically." -Kyle Busch

"It's a big weekend for us going into Darlington. We are leading the points and Dan Amos, the chairman of Aflac, is going to be there. Darlington is one of my favorite race tracks and it couldn't have come at a better time on the schedule. We're running well and our 1.5-mile program has been spectacular. This race really suits me as a driver – it's a long race at a track that I love. I'm just hoping we can get a victory for Aflac there." -Carl Edwards

"Racing-wise, I've always said Darlington is not the perfect racetrack. To me, it's my favorite racetrack to drive. But, racing-wise, going three- and four-wide, you're not going to see it at Darlington. It's going to be a very important track-position race in the sense that, if you're out front, it's going to be easier to stay out front because it's difficult to pass there. It's always been a give-and-take racetrack. It's a give-and-take racetrack when it comes to passing. The fact that you are running right next to the wall is challenging. It's the most challenging track we have and that is why I enjoy it the most. I haven't thought it was as much fun since they repaved it, but I think the racing was better last year than it was the year before, and I think it will be better again this time around. It is still a great racetrack." -Ryan Newman

Keepin' It Short: Racing Loses Another Hero
by Mike Neff

There are stories everywhere about people who epitomize the essence of racing and Hershel Roberts was as much of an example of living to race as anyone. This past week Roberts lost his battle with cancer and racing lost one of its most ardent supporters. Roberts was given six months to live in 2006 but refused to slow down and lived some five years before cancer finally won out, and racing is better for those 60 months that Hershel hung on.

Roberts was born in 1943 and worked for John Deere for 42 years. He started racing in 1968 with a car he purchased from Benny Hofer in figure 8 and sportsman races. In 2004, Roberts and his son Ken moved up to the late model ranks in what coincidentally was the year he was first diagnosed with colon cancer. Doctors removed 17 inches of his colon and he was declared cancer free. Unfortunately in February, 2006 cancer returned to the lining of Roberts' stomach and it was declared inoperable. The doctors gave him six months to live and Roberts simply continued doing what he was doing and let the chips fall where they may. He underwent chemotherapy treatments that slowed the growth but did not stop it while he pressed forward to get the maximum out of the life that he had left.

Roberts spoke in an interview in 2008 about his views on his condition.

"They told me to get everything in order and get a will made. Why sit around and worry about it? I'm going to try and live the best life I can and do the stuff I want to do while I'm still alive."

While he continued his racing career one of his doctors was quoted as saying "He's the healthiest sick man I've ever seen in my life."

Roberts stayed behind the wheel of his No. 58 car until 2009 when his health finally forced him to get out of the seat. He was concerned that he was becoming a liability to the other competitors and, in true Roberts fashion, was always concerned about others even to the end. When Roberts got out of the car he didn't park it, instead he handed the wheel to Ray Guss, Jr. and continued working on the car up until the very end of his life.

Guss did Roberts proud, winning five races in each of the last two seasons on the Deery Brothers Tour as well as three track championships in 2010 alone. As 2010 drew to a close Roberts climbed behind the wheel on more time at his home track, Quad Cities Speedway. Roberts won a consolation race which put him into the 100 lap feature event. Roberts ran all 100 laps.

"I'll be darned if he didn't stay out there and complete it," Guss said after the race. "That shows you right there that he was doing what he wanted to do and fulfilling his dream."

Over his career Roberts won 300 races, 14 track championships, five of which were late model titles. 72 hours before he passed away Guss gave Roberts the trophy from a win last Friday night at Donnellson, Iowa. After his passing, Guss shared his favorite memory.

"The biggest thing you learned from Hershel, he wasn't looking for no sympathy from nobody. He was just living every day for what it was and doing what he wanted to do. Evidently that's how everybody should look at life..you've gotta live every minute of every day and be happy with what you're doing."

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
In the 1991 TranSouth 500, Michael Waltrip was in excellent position to pick up his first career Winston Cup victory.  However, something happened to drop him back down the order (he eventually finished third).  What was it?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q:  If you look at the 1993 Mountain Dew Southern 500 on racing-reference.info, you'll notice that the race ended 16 laps early.  Why was this so?

A:  Rains delayed the start of the 500 mile race by nearly three hours.  Once they finally got the track semi-dry, NASCAR put the teams out on the 1.366-mile oval and ran five laps under a yellow-green situation before throwing the green.  A competition yellow quickly followed.

The race was very clean, but just could not be completed before sunset.  Mark Martin won the race to take his fourth consecutive win with Brett Bodine second, Rusty Wallace third and Dale Earnhardt fourth.  They were the only four on the lead lap at the finish.  The last ten laps of the race can be seen in this clip.
