Kimi Raikkonen Talks Cup Test & Possible Sonoma Start

Former Formula One world champion Kimi Raikkonen has had a big week in the United States, running his first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway last Friday. Earlier this week, Raikkonen tested a Sprint Cup Series car for Robby Gordon Motorsports at Virginia International Raceway, and this weekend he will make his Nationwide Series debut for NEMCO Motorsports.

Raikkonen called last weekend's Truck Series race "good fun," saying the handling of the truck went away after hitting the wall a number of times throughout the event.

Thursday was his first time driving a Nationwide Series car, but the second time around Charlotte Motor Speedway.

"At least I know the circuit, how the weekend goes," he said.

This week's test at VIR did not goes as well as hoped, as rain delayed much of the session and he tore the front end of the car off as when he got off course.

"I went out and just run a bit wide and decided to go over the grass, but unfortunately there was a big hole or something in the grass, so it destroyed the front end a bit," he said.

After the on-track incident, it began to rain again and the team was unable to get back on track.

"It was fun to drive it – the road course – in that car," he said.

With Sonoma nearly a month away, questions linger whether the former world champion will attempt to make his first Sprint Cup Series race.

"It would be nice to go and do it," he said. "We'll see what happens after this week."

Kyle Busch Apologizes For "Lack Of Judgment"

Less than a week after being pulled over in Iredell County, North Carolina, Kyle Busch faced the media at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

"I'm certainly sorry that it happened and my actions led me to speed," Busch said. "It was a lack of judgment and all I can do is apologize to the public, my friends, my fans, my sponsors and everybody, look at this experience as a learning experience, and to move forward."

Stopped in a Lexus test car going 128 mph in a 45 mph zone, Busch was issued a citation, but was not arrested nor did he have his license seized since he isn't considered a flight risk. Despite calls from many outside the sport, NASCAR has not penalized Busch for his actions.

"I'm not the jurisdiction to make a case," Busch said when asked if he had a defense for himself. "I leave that to the court systems and everything else like that. This matter will be handled through that as best as we can handle it and as best as the authorities decide to handle it. I have the utmost respect for the authorities across the United States of America that try to keep all of us safe every day."

While NASCAR has not penalized Busch, Joe Gibbs Racing is looking at the issue internally and may take action further down the road, but team owner Joe Gibbs said they never considered suspension.

"It's a serious issue," Gibbs said. "Obviously that's an important statement for us, this is serious."

"I think that anything that is a disciplinary thing is something we're talking about and I think, you know, a situation like this, like I said, is very serious. I think you talk your way through it and try to make good decisions and do the right thing."

Busch is scheduled to go to court on July 20th where he could lose his license for up to one year under North Carolina law.

Kurt Busch Blames Media For Radio Criticism, Vows Solid Team Communication

Penske Racing's Kurt Busch has been more than vocal over the radio during the 2011 season. Throughout the first 11 races of the season, Busch could be heard yelling a tirade of expletive laced criticisms at team engineers and the overall performance as the handling of the car slipped away during the course of a race.

According to Busch, that ended with last week's Sprint All-Star Race.
Blaming the media for being hypocritical, Busch said he will no longer use the radio to relay criticism, instead promising better communication moving forward.

"It's a matter of trying to be the most professional that you can be about it," Busch said. "Not every situation is good. You're being graded on how you persevere through the troubling times. I always laugh and listen to you guys contradict yourselves because you say that you want us to be more colorful, but all that you want to do to a driver is just thrash them when they show personality. That's what I'm going through with this radio and from now on, there's not going to be anything on it except solid team communication because that's all there needs to be."

Brad Keselowski Earns Coca-Cola 600 Pole

Fast in last weekend's Sprint Showdown, Brad Keselowski backed it up Thursday night in Windstream Pole Qualifying at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Posting a fast lap of 192.089 mph at a time of 28.112 seconds, Keselowski sped his way to his second career pole.

"This car was awesome man," Keselowski said. "Awesome! Fast cars go fast and this is a team is making a lot of progress. We made some awesome gains in the Blue Deuce. Every week, we just keep picking away a little here, a little bit there. We're starting to get more people to believe in us. We just have to keep chipping away with this Miller Lite Dodge. My guys gave me a really fast race car and we were able to put it together for a qualifying lap."

When asked where he found the speed to lay down his fast lap, Keselowski attributed it to where his crew chief Paul Wolfe lives.

"My crew chief Paul Wolfe, he lives off of Perth Road, so maybe he found some secrets there," he said. "I don't know. There is a lot of speed on that road I hear. It's his responsibility."

Perth Road is where Kyle Busch was pulled over going 128 mph in a 45 mph zone earlier this week.

AJ Allmendinger posted the second fastest lap of the night at 191.693 mph at a time of 28.170 seconds. Knocking on the door as the next first-time winner in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Allmendinger is hoping to turn around their struggles on the mile-and-a-half tracks.

"The mile-and-a-half program hasn't been our best," Allmendinger said. "We've been struggling with it a little bit and haven't been as good as our teammate, Marcos (Ambrose), and a lot of the Fords, so I thought last week in the All-Star Race we got better. We still weren't as good as we wanted to be, but we learned some things. We came back here with a different plan to work on setup and, so far, at least in qualifying trim, it was pretty good."

Sprint All-Star Race winner Carl Edwards posted the third fastest time of the session, while Denny Hamlin and Jeff Burton rounded out the top 5. Jimmie Johnson, David Reutimann, David Ragan, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. and Clint Bowyer made up the rest of the top 10.

Making his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut, Stenhouse, Jr. was forced to qualify on speed and surprised many with his ninth-place effort. Filling in for friend and fellow Roush Fenway Racing driver Trevor Bayne, Stenhouse, Jr. was the last car to qualify and was able put the Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford in the show and in the top 10.

"I'm relieved to get this thing in," he said. "I knew the car had the speed. Our Motorcraft/Quick Lane Ford Fusion was fast in practice. Whether I could put it all together was a different story and we were able to, which was good. I didn't imagine we would have a lap that good, but we'll definitely take it. I left a little bit out there because we just had to get in. These Wood Brothers guys did an awesome job and I just can't wait to get in the race on Sunday and just try to make all the laps we can."

Despite a great save to keep the No. 71 Ford off the wall, Andy Lally failed to make the show, along with T.J. Bell, Scott Wimmer, Tony Raines and Scott Riggs.

Special Report: Top 12 Drivers Speak Out at Charlotte
by Mike Neff

The top 12 drivers in Sprint Cup points were once again available for media questions at Charlotte Motor Speedway Thursday, and The Frontstretch had the chance to ask each of them a question to share with the fans.

Frontstretch.com: You spoke about driving for the Mitlers. They're giving Nick Hoffman a chance in their truck this year. What have you seen from Nick in the Truck Series?

Carl Edwards: I think Nick Hoffman is a guy that you guys are gonna hear about a lot in the future. His father and his uncle are amazing racers. Nick has been doing really well. He's been running his dirt modified and doing great with it. He does a backflip when he wins, which I think is really neat. They're a family that are true racers. When I moved down to Charlotte and Jack hired me and I was looking for a place to live, I lived at their house for the first couple of weeks while I was in Charlotte, so they're just good people. Nick is driving Mike's truck, I think they're going to Kansas with it and he's a very smart racer. He's got the gift that it takes, it's just a matter of him getting the right opportunities and him and Mike getting him that experience that he needs.

Frontstretch.com: When you look at the age of instant gratification, do you think it's still necessary for a 600-mile race and do you enjoy the challenge in the length?

Jimmie Johnson: I definitely enjoy the challenge in the length and I think there are a lot of things that balance out. Sure the world has changed and the instant gratification is a big hook now and everybody is into that but there's certain races that founded our sport and shaped our sport into what it is and we need to keep those in mind and I think the 600 is a great event. I really enjoy racing in it. It's been good to me over the years. I think if you are a motorsports fan this weekend you've got three big, big races between F1, IndyCar and what we have going on here. So it's an exciting time to be a motorsports fan this weekend.

Frontstretch.com: What is your outlook for this weekend's races?

Kyle Busch: Given our past successes here from last week with the NOS Energy Truck and having Zahra Baker (A 10-year-old disabled North Carolina girl who was found slain last year) on the side and winning that race in remembrance of her. Then being able to carry on a good, strong run into Saturday night with the All-Star race for my best finish in that event. Things were good. We've got nothing but excited guys coming in here for this weekend's race, the Coca-Cola 600, and being the longest race of the year, we've definitely been ready for it and looking forward to being able to get out on the race track, have some good results and maybe win this thing and bring home my first Cup win at Charlotte.

Frontstretch.com: What is your reaction to one of your counterparts going 128 mph on a public road?

Dale Earnhardt, Jr.: Sometimes you go a little fast, even away from the race track I guess. I've been guilty of the same thing myself just been lucky enough not to get caught.

Frontstretch.com: You did 128?

Earnhardt, Jr.: I don't really know if I got that fast, I didn't know if we had enough straight road in North Carolina to get going that quick but, apparently there is a piece somewhere.

Frontstretch.com: KHI is obviously doing well in Trucks and Nationwide, how do you feel you are making progress and do you ultimately feel you can get to Cup in a year or two if you get the right sponsorship?

Kevin Harvick: We don't have any plans to go to Cup. I've said it many times, I think it would have to be 100 percent of a perfect scenario. The way that we work with RCR right now is basically like we have everything tied together and everybody is working well together so we don't have any intentions of doing that.

Frontstretch.com: If Jack Roush owned a World of Outlaws Sprint Car team and called you right now and said you were racing tomorrow night, what would be your reaction?

Matt Kenseth: I'd say no (laughing). I'd really like to drive one sometime, not so much race one. I've never really raced dirt and I'm pretty sure Jack would want to find somebody that actually knew what they were doing. He'd probably put Stenhouse or Carl in there. I've never really done any dirt racing. It's really neat to watch that stuff and those cars are awesome. I think those guys are just great drivers and I think I would be thoroughly embarrassed if I went and tried that right away.

Frontstretch.com: How much have these cars changed since they were introduced in 2007? How much different is what you're running now than what you ran six months ago?

Ryan Newman: They've changed a lot when it comes to the handling of it. We've done a lot to make them handle a lot better. Kyle Busch's first comments were pretty spot-on, even though nobody really wanted to hear it, in saying that they've gotten safer; and we as teams, the biggest changes we've made is just working to reduce the weight in the cars and putting the weight in the right spot. That's been a big help with reference to the tires themselves and getting to use the left-side tires a little harder instead of the right-side and having the problems we had like at Indy a few years ago. So, just working with them and getting that notebook is a big part of making them consistent and being able to unload and not have guys...two or three years ago or whatever it was, you'd go out there for first practice and you'd see splitter marks all over the race track from guys just clobbering the splitter. And now guys have a lot better understanding of where we need to be and what the speed's got to be like in the race track and how we work with these race cars. I think a part of the help as well has been going back to the spoiler because obviously there's years and years of history with the spoiler and the notes that go along with it.

Frontstretch.com: With where you are in points now, do you as a team do anything different? Do you take more chances, do you bring new cars  in, are you more conservative?

Clint Bowyer: More of the same; more of the exact same is what's in store for us. I've got a brand new bullet built for Kansas. That's what you have to do is to continue to move forward. If you don't you'll be left behind. We have a game plan of bringing new cars in and implementing those in on a time frame. If you do them all at one time, it might be the week after, you might learn something and then you've already got your cars built for that timeframe. So having a good structure and timeframe of when that next car is coming down the line is very important to keeping up with the competition."

Frontstretch.com: Is there a point where you guys know where the drop in performance started? Have you been caught by surprise during the race by how you car has struggled?

Kurt Busch: I feel like how the month of May went for us last year, we were top 5. I think we were top 5 and right where we needed to be in points – top 5 in points. We came off a dominating month of May. We seemed to drop off when we went to Chicago in July. It was a car that we couldn't describe and figure out. Chassis changes came towards the Chase and that's when we really never found the speed. We had a very successful Daytona Speedweeks – a top 5 in the Daytona 500. I think we all know that driving a restrictor-plate car is a lot different than a mile-and-a-half car. We hit it right for a superspeedway car. And now we're back to the mile-and-a-halves and we've struggled. Twelve months later, we just find ourselves a bit behind in the mile-and-a-half department.

Frontstretch.com: With this heat, is  there anything that you can use from last week that you're going to bring over?

Tony Stewart: Look in your archives. Every year everybody tells you 'Yes' on that. That's what everybody says. That's what everybody said last week. It's the same answer this week. Log this answer for the rest of my life that yes, everything that we learned last week we will use toward this week for the rest of my life. That's what we'll do.

Frontstretch.com: Does the length of this race and the night-time atmosphere make it more likely for one team to hit on something more than others?

Mark Martin: I don't think the length has a significant impact on that. But, the day into night can have. But usually what that does, most of the time, it takes a car that can run up front initially can't quite get it done late at night. Or vice versa. Which has been mostly the case for me. I'm usually miserable for half of the race and then the race track starts coming to us and we get better. But, the race track itself lends itself to a hot streak seemingly a little bit more than a lot of tracks and that's because it's so demanding handling wise. It is quite the character. I mean, this race track used to be one of the moodiest race tracks that we ran. One of the most moody race tracks of all with temperature. It is a little bit different animal now with this new asphalt mix, a little less than it used to be. It used to be really crazy.

Frontstretch.com: Have you ever received a speeding ticket?

Greg Biffle: That's a loaded question (laughing). In my younger days I have driven a little faster, probably, than I should have a time or two. I never got pulled over or never got a ticket for doing that, but the fastest I've gotten stopped is maybe 85 or 90 – something like that. I think I got pulled over going 90 out in California. I was on my way to the desert one time, going through the desert with tumbleweeds and was on Highway 8 or something like that. That was probably the fastest I ever got a ticket for, but there is obviously a time and a place for going a little bit faster than we should at times. You have to watch your P's and Q's.

Frontstretch Folio: Coca-Cola 600
by Beth Lunkenheimer

This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600. Sunday's race will mark the 12th race on the schedule, and will be broadcast live Sunday, May 28th, at 6:00 PM ET on SPEED and 5:00 PM ET on MRN Radio. Drivers will compete for 400 laps (600 miles) before taking the checkered flag.

Records and Facts

Elliott Sadler holds the track qualifying record with a lap of 27.928 seconds at 193.216 mph for the 2005 UAW-GM Quality 500. Sadler finished 27th in the race after leading 112 laps. The pole was Sadler's fourth and final top qualifying effort that year. He finished out the season 13th in points with one top 5, 12 top-10 finishes and an average finish of 18th in 36 starts that year.

Bobby Labonte holds the record for the fastest 600-mile race run at Charlotte Motor Speedway with a speed of 151.952 mph in the 1995 Coca-Cola 600. Labonte led 85 of 400 laps and had a margin of victory of 6.28 seconds over second-place finisher Terry Labonte. Michael Waltrip finished third followed by Sterling Marlin and Ricky Rudd. The win was Labonte's first of three wins during the 1995 season. In 31 races, Labonte grabbed seven top 5s, 14 top-10 finishes and an average finish of 16th; he finished tenth in the standings.

Kurt Busch is the defending winner of this event,  leading 252 of 400 laps en route to his first career victory at the storied mile-and-a-half track.  He finished 0.737 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Jamie McMurray. Kyle Busch finished third followed by Mark Martin and David Reutimann. The win was Busch's final trip to victory lane behind the wheel of the Blue Deuce. In 36 starts last season, Busch grabbed two wins, nine top 5s, 17 top-10 finishes and an average finish of 15th. He finished a disappointing 11th in points after starting the Chase in fifth.

Say What?!

"Any time you win a race at Charlotte, it's big. It's a speedway with a lot of history and, obviously, the Coke 600 is a huge event. I'm a big fan of shorter races nowadays, but the 600 is a truly special event, with it being on Memorial Day weekend and the history of the Coke 600, when it was known as the World 600. There's just a lot of tradition that surrounds the month of May in Charlotte. So, this is a big race. This is an important race to win." Tony Stewart

"The two biggest things about the 600 that make it challenging are the fact that it starts in the day and ends in the night, and just that it's so long. Six-hundred miles is our longest race. It's usually hot around this time of year and it's just a very physically demanding race--and mentally demanding--just because it's so long." David Gilliland

"The 600 is such a demanding race on the car, crew and driver. The car has to last all 600 miles without having any mechanical failures and the driver and crew have to stay mentally and physically sharp. We tried some different packages last week in the All-Star event and we feel really good about our chances this week. This team is close to taking the next step and we need a good, solid finish at Charlotte to continue the momentum we've been building." Paul Wolfe, Crew Chief for Brad Keselowski

Keepin' It Short: Strapping on the Wings at Charlotte
by Mike Neff

The Memorial Day weekend is a huge one in auto racing and the Dirt Track at Charlotte will be right in the middle of it tonight. The World of Outlaw Sprint Cars will roll into the 4/10th-mile oval for the Outlaw Showdown. This is the 17th stop for the WoO sprints thanks to five rainouts. Joey Saldana currently leads the points by 27 over Steve Kinser who has the most wins this season at four. Last year's winner Donny Schatz is third in points but he's only landed one victory so far this year.

The winged sprint cars are always a site to behold on a dirt race track but they are especially impressive at Charlotte. After several years of struggles the folks who run Charlotte were able to get the track surface competitive and since then it has put on some amazing shows. The cars will run nearly wide open when the track first opens before the surface gets packed in and begins to get slippery. They'll still be wound up, high, wide and handsome once they cushion develops and slide past each other all night long in the races.

One other cool fact about the Outlaw races at Charlotte is that they will be televised live. For years the World of Outlaws have not had a television package which keeps the fans of the series from seeing action from the many stops around the country on their TV sets. The Knoxville Nationals are always broadcast on television because they are they're own event and negotiate their own television deal. Charlotte is the only other track, and the only one that hosts the winged sprints sanctioned by the World of Outlaws, that shows their races on television.

A few facts about the Dirt Track at Charlotte:

Length – 2,112 feet, 4/10 mile
Racing Surface – North Carolina Red Clay
Track Width – 60 feet
Straightaway Lengths – 360 feet
Turn Lengths – 696 feet
Seating Capacity – 14,164
Banking in turns – 10 degrees
Banking on straights – 8 degrees
Construction cost - $10 million
First Race – Friday May 25th , 2000
Most wins WoO Sprints – Jason Meyers and Donny Schatz - 4
Track Record – Jeff Shepard – 11.880 seconds – 121.212 mph

While most of the attention this weekend is focused on the mile-and-a-half track across the street from the dirt track, the race on Friday night will be some of the fastest and most competitive that any of the fans in the Charlotte area will see this weekend.

Whelen All-American Championship Update

The pursuit of the Whelen All-American National Championship continues to heat up as more and more drivers are logging races and wins. Keith Rocco has run 13 races and notched six wins, but he's not setting the world on fire quite like he did last season. He's missed the top 5 four times and is only 29 points ahead of two-time national champion Phillip Morris.

Morris made the trek to Motor Mile Speedway this past weekend since South Boston was not running to try and take some of Lee Pulliam's money since Pulliam had come to South Boston in search of the bounty that was on Morris's head thanks to his six consecutive wins. Morris was unable to knock off Pulliam in either of the twin 100 races even though he was the fastest qualifier. As a result Pulliam moved within 23 points of Morris.

Frank Deiny, Jr. moved up two spots in the standings after running third and fourth behind Pulliam and Morris at Motor Mile. Nate Monteith also made a big move this past week coming from outside of the top 10 to a tie for sixth place with Zachary Hausler who leads all of the top 10 drivers with nine victories this season. Brandon Davis added 38 points to his total and sits seventh in points after only six races, five of which he's won.

Whelen All-American National Point Standings

1) Keith Rocco – 13 races – 6 wins – 9 top 5s – 12 top 10s – 388
2) Philip Morris – 10 races – 7 wins – 9 top 5s – 9 top 10s – 359
3) Lee Pulliam – 10 races – 6 wins – 8 top 5s – 9 top 10s – 336
4) Frank Deiny, Jr. - 11 races – 0 wins – 6 top 5s – 10 top 10s – 292
5) Zachary Hausler – 13 races – 9 wins – 11 top 5s – 13 top 10s – 269
6) Nate Monteith – 9 races – 5 wins – 8 top 5s – 8 top 10s – 269
7) Brandon Davis – 6 races – 5 wins – 6 top 5s – 6 top 10s – 259
8) Tommy Lemons, Jr. - 9 races – 0 wins – 7 top 5s – 9 top 10s – 230
9) Daniel Pope, II – 9 races – 1 win – 7 top 5s – 8 top 10s – 227
10) Lee Tissot – 8 races – 1 win – 6 top 5s – 8 top 10s - 219

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
The 1994 Champion 300 at Charlotte Motor Speedway was won by Phil Parsons in his No. 29 Matchbox/White Rose Collectibles Chevrolet, in what was considered to be an upset at the time.  However, the race was marred by a nasty crash on a restart.  What happened?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q:  In 2005, then-Lowe's Motor Speedway General Manager Humpy Wheeler announced his infamous "levigation" of the 1.5 mile quad-oval's track surface.  We all remember how that turned out.  However, how old was the pavement that Wheeler had levigated?

A:  The levigated pavement was laid down during the summer of 1994 and first raced on by the Winston Cup and Busch Grand National Series in October.  So, the pavement was roughly 10.5 years old at the time of levigation.  The idea was to smooth out the bumps.  However, it created a whole new monster.
