These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2010-12-06,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days. For further information see
my 2010-11-16 companion posting on "Five Guys Named Moe Questions
from the Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI5GNM)".

All questions were written by members of Five Guys Named Moe,
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and
may have been retyped and/or edited by me.

* Game 10, Round 9 - Arts & Literature - Reuben Awards

The Reuben Awards have been presented annually since 1946 by
the National Cartoonist Society in the US to the Cartoonist of
the Year. The award is named after Rube Goldberg, the society's
first president. We'll give you the year and the cartoonist's name,
and you tell us the name of the winning comic strip.

1. 1951, Walt Kelly.
2. 1957, Hal Foster.
3. 1948, Chic Young.
4. 1953, Mort Walker.
5. 1982, Bil Keane.
6. 1985, Lynn Johnston.
7. 1997, Scott Adams.
8. 1989, Jim Davis.
9. 1973, Dik Browne.
10. 1976, Ernie Bushmiller.

(What *I* want to know is how someone named Ernie Bushmiller got
into this club, when everyone else's names average 9.3 letters
and 2.7 syllables for the *first and last names combined*!)

* Game 10, Round 10 - Challenge Round

A. Canadian Nobel Prize Winners

In each case, name the scientist.

A1. In 1989 he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with
Thomas R. Cech for their work on the catalytic properties
of ribonucleic acid.

A2. Although he was born in England, he did his post-doctoral
work at the University of British Columbia. And in 1993
he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Kary Mullis.

B. "Big Bang Theory" Guest Stars

B1. Name the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor who has
made several guest appearances on CBS's "The Big Bang
Theory" and become Sheldon Cooper's nemesis.

B2. Name *either* the "Battlestar Galactica" actress or the
"Star Trek" original series actor who appeared together
in Harold Wolowitz's fantasies in an episode earlier
this season.

C. Great NFL Comebacks

C1. The Dallas Cowboys were down 28-13 in the 4th quarter of a
1972 divisional playoff game against the San Francisco
49ers, when Cowboys' Coach Tom Landry pulled quarterback
Craig Morton and replaced him with what quarterback,
who led the Cowboys to a 30-28 win and earned himself
the nickname Captain Comeback?

C2. The Buffalo Bills were losing 35-3 to the Houston Oilers
in the second half of a 1993 wildcard playoff game,
and without their starting quarterback, Jim Kelly,
due to injury. However, they came back to take the
lead and eventually win the game in overtime on a Doug
Christie field goal. Name the Bills' backup QB who led
them to victory.

D. This Day in History

D1. The 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution
was adopted on December 6, 1865. What did this amendment
prohibit?

D2. What country declared its independence from Russia on
December 6, 1917?

D3. For fun, but for no points: what was the *other* big
news story of December 6, 1917?

E. Countries Canada does Not Want You to Visit

Canada's Ministry for Foreign Affairs and International Trade has
travel warnings and recommendations for many countries; however,
there are only a handful where avoiding all travel is recommended.
We will give you a portion of the official warning for a country
that the government does not recommend you travel to under any
circumstances; you give us the name of the country.

E1. Canadians should be aware that the situation throughout
this country has been tense since the International
Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant against
President Al Bashir on March 4, 2009. Following the ICC
announcement, the government of this country expelled
numerous aid agencies.

E2. The security situation in this country is highly
unstable. Since late December 2006, the transitional
federal government and rebel groups have been fighting
over the control of the south-central area including
the capital.

F. A War Cry and a Motto

F1. "Blood and Fire" is the war cry of what army? Hint:
The blood refers to the blood of Jesus and the fire
refers to the fire of the Holy Spirit.

F2. "Don't be evil" is the informal corporate motto of
what company?

I see from other posts that the expected answer is "Beetle Bailey".
However, Wilmer is actually also a correct answer, although maybe not
a pub in Toronto. This is one of the names the comic has been published as
in Sweden. The other, and the more commonly used name is Knasen. Since
that name is obviously a Swedish adaption, I went for Wilmer in the
vain hope that was the original name.

I don't really expect any points, and I don't care too much - it's only
a game! But at least, I've held my speech of defense! (And showed that
for once I did have a clue, and did not just guess wildly.)

My son Michael started using it instead of Smith, which had been
the default. Of course, the one time he didn't use it was when
asked for the Rock's real name. :(
