Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 5 updates in 2 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Jan 11 12:46AM -0600

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2019-11-04,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of the Red Smarties and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2019-10-16 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

** Game 7, Round 9 - Sports - NHL Farm Teams

We will name one AHL team and one ECHL team that are both associated
with the same NHL team. You name the big-league team. City (or other
place) name or team name will do, like "Saskatchewan" or "Roughriders".

1. AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms, ECHL Reading Royals.
2. AHL Rochester Americans, ECHL Cincinnati Cyclones.
3. AHL Stockton Heat, ECHL Kansas City Mavericks.
4. AHL Utica Comets, ECHL Kalamazoo Wings.
5. AHL Belleville Senators, ECHL Brampton Beast.
6. AHL Manitoba Moose, ECHL Jacksonville Icemen.
7. AHL Syracuse Crunch, ECHL Orlando Solar Bears.
8. AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, ECHL Toledo Walleye.
9. AHL Ontario Reign, ECHL Manchester Monarchs.
10. AHL Providence Bruins, ECHL Atlanta Gladiators.

** Game 7, Round 10 - Challenge Round

* A. Canadian Provincial Mottos

We give you the motto in Latin and its English translation.
You name the province.

A1. Parva sub ingenti: "The small under the protection of
the great".

A2. Spem reduxit: "Hope was restored".

* B. Bridge Bidding Conventions

Name them.

B1. This convention is traditionally used after a 1 No Trump
opening bid by one's partner, in an attempt to find a major
suit fit.

B2. This convention is used to explore one's partner's holdings
of aces and kings, to determine whether a slam is possible.

* C. SI Base Units

There are only 7 base units in the International System of Units,
from which all other units are derived. We will tell you what
the base unit is measuring, and you must name that base unit.
For example, if we said "time", you would say the second.

C1. Thermodynamic temperature.
C2. Luminous intensity.

* D. Broadway Musicals

We will give you the premiere date on Broadway (note that the
show may have premiered elsewhere first), and a brief description.
In each case you name the musical.

D1. 1991. In the final days of the war, American soldier Chris
falls in love with bar girl Kim. He tries to bargain with
the bar's owner to win her freedom.

D2. 2005. A documentary-style musical that tells the story of
the 1960s rock-and-roll group the Four Seasons.

* E. Movies Together

We name three people, and you name the only movie with which all
three were associated.

E1. 1990. Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Tony Scott.
E2. 1990. Meg Ryan, Tom Hanks, John Patrick Shanley.

* F. Populations

As everyone knows, China and India are the #1 and #2 most populous
countries in the world, both in the billions. We will ask you
about the two next-most-populous countries. In each case, give
us their population according to the CIA World Factbook as of
February 2019 -- within 5,000,000.

F1. #3 on the list is the US.
F2. #4 is Indonesia.

Stayman, EFOS

I would guess that the quizmasters are looking for Stayman which
is the older one. Over here, EFOS is more common, though. Then again,
with both of them you bid 2 clubs. EFOS just give you more answers and
also include transfers. (And then there is Double Stayman where 2 diamonds
also asks for major suits.

Never heard of it.

2C = (normal) Stayman, 2D = (Game-)Forcing Stayman is known here, but
not the name "double Stayman".

Grapefruit. 4 for everyone -- Dan Blum, Bruce, Erland, Joshua,
Pete, and Dan Tilque.

The scientists who discovered this grapefruit-drug interaction
were actually trying to test whether alcohol interacted with a
certain drug. Naturally they had to give small amounts of alcohol
to some test subjects and not to others. To keep people from knowing
which group they were in, they had to mask the taste of the alcohol,
and they chose concentrated grapefruit juice because its taste was
strong enough. They added alcohol to it for some subjects and not
for others -- but what they found was that somehow the drug was
affecting *both* groups more strongly than it should have.
