Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 6 updates in 2 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Jul 30 10:46PM

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2023-06-19,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Bloor St. Irregulars and
are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
please see my 2023-05-24 companion posting on "Questions from the
Canadian Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

* Game 6, Round 4 - Sports - Cy Young Winners

Since 1956, the Cy Young award has recognized the best pitchers
in Major League baseball.

1. The award is named after legendary pitcher Cy Young. Name *any
year* when Cy Young played professionally, between his debut
with the Cleveland Spiders and his retirement from the Boston
Rustlers.

For questions #2-10, in each case name the pitcher described.
All of them have won the award more than once each.

2. The first man to win multiple Cy Youngs was this Los Angeles
Dodger, who won three times between 1963 and 1966.

3. Nicknamed "the Franchise", this man won his first Cy Young in the
"Miracle" Mets' season of 1969, adding two more in the early
'70s. He is one of only two Mets in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

4. Also famous as an underwear model, this Baltimore Oriole won
the Cy Young three times in the mid-Seventies.

5. The man with the most Cy Young awards is this man, with 7.
He won his first three with the Red Sox starting in 1986, then
two with the Blue Jays, one with the Yankees, and one with
the Astros.

6. Other than <answer 5>, the only Blue Jay with multiple Cy Young
wins is this man, who won as a Jay in 2003 and as a Philly
in 2010. He died in a plane crash in 2017.

7. The only Montreal Expo to win the Cy Young was this pitcher, who
did it in 1997. He added two more awards playing for the
Red Sox.

8. Nicknamed "the Big Unit", this 6'10" pitcher won in 1995 for
the Mariners and then 4 consecutive years (1999-2002) for the
Diamondbacks.

9. Other than <answer 8>, the only pitcher to win 4 consecutive Cy
Youngs is this man. He won as a Cub in 1992 and then the
following 3 years as a Brave.

10. Despite a career plagued by injuries, this New York Met managed
to win the Cy Young in 2018 and 2019.

* Game 6, Round 5 - Audio - At The Zoo

Yes, here's another audio round without the audio.

The audio round is about songs with animals in the titles. In the
original game you would have been played a clip; here I'll just
name the singer or group. In all cases, please name the song.
(With this change, there may be additional answers for some artists
besides the ones in the originsl game; if so, I will accept them.)

1. Peter Gabriel.
2. Katy Perry, featuring Juicy J.
3. Shakira.
4. The Who.
5. Duran Duran.
6. Culture Club.
7. Led Zeppelin.
8. Heart.
9. The Trashmen.
10. Meat Loaf.

* Game 6, Round 6 - Miscellaneous - Corporate Advertising Mascots

1. Introduced in 1980 for the purpose of increasing crime awareness
and personal safety, name the animated bloodhound who wanted
you to help "Take a bite out of crime".

2. Identify the beret-wearing hipster character introduced in 1961
as the spokesman for the StarKist brand of products. He thinks
he's the perfect catch, but he always ends up getting rejected.

3. Introduced in 1894 by two French brothers as the official mascot
for their company and given the name Bibendum, what is the name
by which he is commonly referred to in English? Bibendum's
appearance is that of a man made up of a white stack of the
product that the brothers were famous for producing.

4. Rich Uncle Pennybags is his official name, but in large parts
of the world this board-game mascot is better known by what name?

5. Name this "original party animal" who first appeared in 1987
as a mascot for Annheuser-Busch. This mascot was retired in
1989, partly due to public outcry, but also possibly because the
mascot had begun to overshadow the actual product being sold.
The original portrayer of the mascot died shortly thereafter
in 1993. Name this mascot.

6. What is the official name of the mascot widely known as the
Pillsbury Doughboy?`

7. Name the small animated lamp that is the official mascot of
Pixar Animation Studios. He shares his name with the 1996 Oscar-
nominated animated short that is widely seen as a breakthrough
in computer animation.

8. "It looks like you're writing a letter. Would you like help?"
is what this default Microsoft Office Assistant might annoyingly
ask you. What is this character's actual name?

9. Introduced in 1957, this red-headed breakfast cereal mascot
can't crow in the morning without first having a bowl of the
product that he represents. Name this Kellogg's brand mascot.

10. His full name is Bartholomew Richard Fitzgerald-Smythe and he's
been the mascot for his signature product since 1916. He faked
his death in January 2020 as part of a Super-Bowl-related ad
campaign. Fortunately a baby version of the same character
was reborn from the soil. By what name is he best known?

  • Usar o Google Drive
  • Assistir um vídeo do YouTube
  • Compartilhar uma foto
  • Fazer o download de um app
  • Usar a Pesquisa Google

Atenciosamente,
Equipe de Contas do Google

Este e-mail foi enviado para atualizar você sobre mudanças importantes na sua Conta do Google e nos serviços relacionados.

responded to 4 of the 10 rounds, but beat everyone else's totals
based on their 8 best scores.

I believe you have the wrong scoring table here. This is the table for

It's come up in this newsgroup more than once: first in connection
with my Rare Entries contest MSB1 in 1996, where I ruled on the basis
that Qatar bordered the UAE, and then in connection with Dan Tilque's
Rotating Quiz 132 in 2014s, when Joshua Kreitzer kindly located my
1996 posting (which I no longer had a copy of) where I said:

|| If this had been pointed out to me during the protest period, I
|| would've allowed Qatar, to the benefit of Aidan Hollinshead and Mark
|| Huckabone.
||
|| It turns out that the border between Saudi Arabia (hereafter SA) and
|| the UAE is undemarcated, and different maps show at least three
|| versions of it.
||
|| The oldest maps I have, in atlases dated 1972 and 1980, show the UAE
|| as extending inland about 100 km from the coast along pretty much its
|| entire east-west extent. ,,, The 1980 atlas (Rand McNally New

|| reaching the coast at exactly the same point as the west end of the
|| Qatar border. In other words, in this version the *only* country that
|| Qatar appears to have a border with is the UAE, but (since the SA-UAE
|| border is a dashed line, indicating uncertainty) it is possible that
|| either Qatar at its southwest corner touches SA, or that the UAE again
|| touches the coast. ...
||
|| The atlas I used for the contest was the 1990 Rand McNally New Inter-
|| national. It shows the UAE as being wider in the east than the
|| earlier maps, extending over 150 km inland in places; but it is
|| narrower in the west, only about 25 km wide, and does not extend as
|| far west. On this map about 60% of Qatar's land border is with SA,
|| and 40% with the UAE. ...
||
|| However, [Dean Edmonds'] reference evidently shows a third version of
|| the border. Presumably it agrees with the one that Erland and I found
|| in the current online CIA World Factbook. This is almost the same as
|| the second version, but the western tip of the UAE is cut off at
|| longitude 51.6, the border extending straight north to the sea. The
|| CIA World Factbook identifies this line as the de facto boundary. I
|| take this to be the most current information, and therefore, as I
|| said, I would have accepted the answer. ...

and I then (in 2014) added:

| Thanks to Joshua Kreitzer for digging that up. I just have one thing
| to add, which is to note that the current CIAWF agrees with Google Maps
| as to the shape of the borders, and differs from all three of the
| layouts that I found mapped in 1996.

Now I find that these sources almost agree, but the CIAWF places the
east end of the Saudi-Qatar border a few miles north of what Google Maps
shows. In any case they agree that Qatar does not touch the UAE.

For what it's worth, Wikipedia's article on the Treaty of Jeddah (1974)
discusses the borders in this area and who recognizes what. For trivia
purposes I think we must accept that Qatar borders only Saudi Arabia.

The second entrant to give this answer!

Well, had the question pertained to conditions in 1699, it would have
been the only possible answer.

But today... I have not heard of any Swedish river that dives underground
to run below the Baltic Sea in a tunnel that has an openning in the
Gulf of Finland. So somehow, I don't think this is the correct answer.

(note: as the second verse of this song consists of the lyrics to the theme from "The Brady Bunch," the Peppermint Trolley Company could be an alternative answer, perhaps)

As I mentiond in my 2023-05-24 companion posting, the Canadian
Inquisition has resumed play as a smaller league and the season
now in progress consists of only 9 games and a Final.

With Game 9 having been played last night, I can now report on
the easiest and hardest games of the regular season.

The three easiest rounds of the season have already been posted here:

1st - Game 4, Round 10 - Challenge Round - JCVD
2nd - Game 1, Round 6 - Miscellaneous - Car Models
3rd - Game 2, Round 4 - Science - Name That Element

I will note the 4th-easiest round when it comes up.

Two rounds were tied for hardest of the season, but one of them is
an audio round and therefore not posted here. The other was:

1st/2nd [1st ignoring audio] - Game 2, Round 8 - History - Weapons of
the Russo-Ukrainian War

Another audio round was the 3rd-hardest, and the two next-hardest rounds
that have already been posted here were:

4th/5th [2nd/3rd] - Game 2, Round 9 - Arts - Modern Architects
6th [4th] - Game 1, Round 7 - Science - Amino Acids

I will note the other round that was tied for 4th/5th [2nd/3rd]
when it comes up.

Oops, in compiling that list I missed that there was a tie for
4th/5th-easiest. One of the tied rounds was

4th/5th - Game 3, Round 5 - Audio - #100 Years, 100 Songs

which I've posted here in non-audio form. And I'll note the
*other* one when it comes up.
