msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Dec 23 09:23PM

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2013-04-08,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Night Owls, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the correct
answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """
notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2022-09-09
companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

* Game 9, Round 4 - Science - Geometric Formulas

We all were taught some geometry in math class, either in elementary
school or high school. In this round, we will test much how you
remember from these classes. In each case, please select the
correct answer from the following list.

*NOTE*: In order for this to be posted in ISO 8859-1, every instance
of the # sign represents pi. The characters ², ³, and × should show
correctly as "squared", "cubed", and the "times" sign respectively.
[Obviously, in some of the formulas the × sign is not used.
For forms like x/y × z, the intent is to divide and then multiply.]

[A] 4L [K] 2W + 2L
[B] L² [L] B × H/2
[C] L³ [M] B² × H/3
[D] #r² [N] 4/3 × #r³
[E] 2#r [O] L × W × H
[F] #r²H [P] 2#r(r + H)
[G] 4#r² [Q] L × H × B/2
[H] B × H [R] L × W × #/4
[I] #r²H/3 [S] (L + W)/2 × H
[J] 6 × L² [T] 2(L × W) + 2(W × H) + 2(H × L)
where
r = radius
B = Base
H = Height
L = Length
W = Width (or in one of the decoys, a second length)

Also note: if there is more than one possibility, select the
simplest one. Which one, then, is the formula for the...

1. Area of a circle?
2. Area of a square?
3. Surface area of a cube?
4. Surface area of a sphere?
5. Perimeter of a rectangle?
6. Circumference of a circle?
7. Volume of a sphere?
8. Volume of a cylinder?
9. Area of a triangle?
10. Volume of a cube?

And if you would like to identify the decoys for fun, but for no points,
decode the rot13 and continue.

11. Fhesnpr nern bs erpgnathyne cnenyyrycvcrq (gung vf, n "fubrobk"

* Game 9, Round 6 - Canadiana Arts & Literature

1. This Canadian author won the first Arthur C. Clarke award
in 1987. The award is given for the best science-fiction novel
that was first published in the UK during the previous year.
Name either the author or the award-winning book.

2. "I would walk to the end of the street and over the prairie
with the clickety grasshoppers bunging in arcs ahead of me,
and I could hear the hum and twang of wind in the great prairie
harp of telephone wires. Standing there with the total thrust
of prairie sun on my vulnerable head, I guess I learned --
at a very young age -- that I was mortal." This excerpt was
recited by Donald Sutherland at the opening ceremonies of the
2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Again, name either the
author or the book it was taken from.

3. In 2006 the Guardian described this Canadian author as
"possibly the most gifted exegete of North American mass culture
writing today." In 2009 the Daily Telegraph said he was "one
of the great satirists of consumerism." He gave us the terms
"McJob" and "Generation X". Name this author.

4. This Canadian writer is best known for his humorous observations
on Canadian history and culture. In 1997 he wrote "Why I
Hate Canadians", followed the next year by "I was a Teen
Aged Katima-Victim". In 2000 he gave us "Canadian History
for Dummies". In 2001 he co-wrote "How to be a Canadian" with
his brother Ian. And he won the Giller prize in 2012 for "419:
A Novel." Name this author (the surname is sufficient).

5. Within 1,000, what is the generally acknowledged number of
copies that must be sold in a week for a book to become a
Canadian bestseller?

6. This talented individual had many careers: for him, writing
was a sideline. He wrote "Face-Off at the Summit", "Home Game:
Hockey and Life in Canada", "The Moved and the Shaken", and
"In School: Our Kids, Our Teachers, Our Classrooms". Who was he?

7. The no-holds-barred "Frank" magazine referred to this person
by substituting the uncomplimentary moniker "Tubby" for his
first name, and referred to his 1993 autobiography "A Life in
Progress" by calling it "A Thesaurus in Progress". Name the
recipient of these barbs.

8. He was a Canadian painter and sculptor. In 1969 he was
made a Companion of the Order of Canada. One of his largest
compositions, "Point de rencontre" ("Meeting Point"), was
originally intended for the Toronto airport, but is """now"""
in the Opéra Bastille in Paris. He was made an Officer of the
National Order of Quebec in 1988, and was promoted to Grand
Officer in 1994. In 2000 he was inducted into Canada's Walk
of Fame. Who?

9. In what Canadian city is the art gallery that """claims"""
to have the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit
art in the world?

10. It's a huge canvas with just two colors of acrylic paint --
twin vertical stripes of ultramarine blue flanking a middle
one of cadmium red. Canadians were outraged when the National
Gallery of Canada paid $1,800,000 for this work in 1989.
*Name the American artist* who created "Voice of Fire".

"Jeopardy!" had a question on Tuesday asking for this waterfall.
Instead of naming the park, they gave the height (3,200 feet)
and the country and noted that, ironically, it descends from the
Devil's Mountain (Auyán-tepui) (which is a local name, whereas the
falls are named after an American pilot).

The rot13 was only so you wouldn't see this question before you
answered #1, but since rot13 doesn't disguise numbers, I thought
I'd better conceal which question I was concerned with.

Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 4 updates in 2 topics

Erland Sommarskog <esquel@sommarskog.se>: Dec 20 09:14PM +0100

FIFA World Cup 2022 is over, and just like in 2018 I have composed a
quiz about the tournament, and there are also some trivia questions
about FIFA World Cup in general.

I don't expect this to be a simple quiz, so don't be shy if you only
know a few questions - that could still give you a good score.

As you will find, some questions are worth fewer points than others. These
are the questions that are quite a bit on the odd trivia side.

As usual post your answers to this newsgroup. Use no other sources
than your own knowledge and common senses for good guesses.

I plan to score this quiz on Boxing Day.

Have fun!

1. a) One country made its debut in the World Cup. Which? (5p)
b) Two more teams only played their second World Cup. Name any of
them (5p)

2. France was not able to defend their title from 2018. For 3p each,
give all teams that have defended the title, and if you also give the
year, there are 3p more for each correct year. (There is no penalty
as such for incorrect answers, but if you have all correct
answers and add one incorrect, I will deduct 3p from your score.)

3. This was the first final between France and Argentina. Which two teams
have
played the greatest number of finals against each other? (10p)

4. Leo Messi finally became World Champion, well-deserved. Which World Cup
record previously held by Lothar Mattäus does he now hold? (10p)

5. Cristian Ronaldo was less successful, but he did nevertheless make some
achievements:
a) What a first in FIFA World Cup did he make? (3p)
b) What overall football record does he now share with Bader Al-Mutawa
from Kuwait? (3p)
c) In the match against Switzerland, CR7 was relegated to the
substitutes bench, being replaced in the starting eleven by Gonçalo
Ramos. How did Ramos fare in that game? (4p)

6. We should not forget Kylian Mbappé. He went to the top in a somewhat
more niched leader board. He also achieved noticeable second, with
Geoff Hurst being the first one. Name any of these feats for 10p.

7. One of the stadiums in the World Cup 2022 was called Stadium 974.
a) It was constructed of 974 what? (5p)
b) The number 974 was very purposely selected. What does it signify?
(5p)

8. For the second consecutive World Cup, Germany failed to qualify from
the group stage. But there is one former World Champion of which the
slate for the World Cups 2018 and 2022 is even worse. Which? (10p)

9. Which year was the last time someone scored ten goals or more in the
same World Cup tournament? Alternatively, give the name of the player.
(10p)

10. Which is the only team from the South American federation CONMEBOL
to never have played in the World Cup? (10p)

11. Football is very much a European and South American affair. For 3p
each, list all teams not from UEFA (Europe) or CONMEBOL (South America)
that have reached the semi-finals in the World Cup. Years not required.
The same principle as in #2 apply to incorrect answers.

12. The match between Germany and Costa Rica constituted what noticeable
first? (10p)

13. Which team sported the son of a President of a Republic? (7p)

14. In the quarter-finale against France, the English defender Harry
Maguire received a yellow card around the 90th minute in the second
half. There is something noticeable about this. What? (7p)

15. Andries Noppert was the goalkeeper in all the five games that
the Netherlands played. Within 10%, how many games has he played
in total for the in the Dutch national team? (7p)

16. There are legendary football players and there are legendary football
players. Ferenc Puskás certainly belongs to the latter group. He was
the top star of the best team that never won the World Cup, the
Hungarian team of 1954. Puskás made one more World Cup appearance,
and there is something quite remarkable with it. What? (7p)

17. Of the teams in the World Cup 2022, there is something with regards
to the players' background that differentiates Argentina, Brazil,
Saudi-Arabia and South Korea from all other countries. What? (7p)

18. The youngest and the oldest goal scorers in a World Cup final have
something in common. What? (7p)

19. Two questions about the World Cup 2026.
a) Which country/ies will host it? (5p)
b) There is a novelty planned for this World Cup, what? (5p)

20. Finally, a question that I forgot include in my previous World Cup
quiz, which I include for fun: In the final group game in the World
Cup, Germany lost against South Korea with 0-2. The second goal
scored by the Koreans followed a theme which is very unusual in
football, but which is common in ice hockey. What? (5p)

Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 6 updates in 2 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Dec 19 09:36PM

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2013-04-08,
and should be interpreted accordingly. All questions were written
by members of the Night Owls, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. I will reveal the correct
answers in about 3 days.

For further information, including an explanation of the """
notation that may appear in these rounds, see my 2022-09-09
companion posting on "Reposted Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (RQFTCI*)".

* Game 9, Round 1 - Current Events (excerpt)

Answer these 2013 questions if you like for fun, but for no points.

1. On April 5, an episode of what sitcom was taped featuring the
female cast of the "Mary Tyler Moore Show"? The episode
included guest stars Mary Tyler Moore, Cloris Leachman, and
the terminally ill Valerie Harper, as well as Betty White,
a regular on the show. What is the name of the currently
running sitcom that will feature this reunion?

2. Last week the L.A. Lakers retired jersey #34. Who was the
all-star former Laker who wore it?

* Game 9, Round 2 - Entertainment - Directors

In each case, name the director of the movies listed.

National Park?

2. This fall, although neither the highest at 108 m (355 feet)
nor the widest at 1,708 m (5,600 feet), is the largest in the
world in terms of area of falling sheet (or area of the vertical
drop). What is the name of this fall on the Zambezi River?

3. Located about 30 km (20 miles) west of Thunder Bay, this
waterfall 39 m (128 feet) tall is sometimes known as the
Niagara of the North. What is it called?

The instructions do say "or company using it". Disney is the name of the
company, so it should get full points.

Technically wrong -- it's *Walt* Disney Co. -- but good enough for me.
4 for *Pete*, Dan Blum, Joshua, and *Dan Tilque*, then.

Incidentally, nobody noticed this issue when I posted this round in 2013

** Game 8, Round 9 - Miscellaneous - Slogans

In this round, we will give you an advertising slogan and you have
to name the product or company """using""" it.

1. "Because I'm worth it."
2. "Think outside the bun."
3. "The world's local bank."
4. "The best a man can get."
5. "Does she... or doesn't she?"

10. "It's everywhere you want to be."

** Game 8, Round 10 - Challenge Round - April Fool

* A. What a Fool Believes

These two questions are about well-known stock frauds.

A1. This Indonesian gold property, which was reported to
contain more than 200,000,000 ounces, was said to be the
richest gold mine ever. The stock price for this company
skyrocketed to a high of $280. At its peak, the company had
a market capitalization of $4,400,000,000. In 1997, the gold
mine proved to be fraudulent and the stock price crashed.
What was the name of this company?

A2. The Ponzi scheme that he ran is considered to be the
largest financial fraud in US history. He was arrested
in 2008. Who """is""" he?

* B. A Fool's Paradise

These two questions are about the poem "Paradise Lost".

B1. Who wrote it?
B2. What biblical story is it based on?

* C. Fool Me Once

These two questions are about movies about frauds or alleged frauds
in real life.

C1. Name the 2011 movie that suggested that Edward de Vere
(the 17th Earl of Oxford), and not William Shakespeare,
was the author of what we now know as the collected works
of Shakespeare.

C2. Name the 2002 movie that starred Leonardo DiCaprio as a man
who, after high school, began a short career of impersonating
professionals such as doctors, lawyers, and airline pilots.

* D. I Pity the Fool

In each case, name the trash-talking boxer.

D1. He had these words for his opponent Lennox Lewis in 2002:
"My style is impetuous. My defense is impregnable.
And I'm just ferocious. I want your heart. I want
to eat his [sic] children. Praise be to Allah."

D2. In 1975 he said his opponent Joe Frazier "is so ugly that he
should donate his face to the US Bureau of Wildlife". Later,
in the build-up to the notorious Thrilla in Manila, he said,
"It will be a killer, and a chiller, and a thriller, when
I get the gorilla in Manila."

* E. Fool's Gold

E1. By American standards, fake gold is anything with a purity
below what threshold in karats? Answer within 2 karats.

E2. What mineral has a superficial resemblance to gold, and
hence the common name "fool's gold"?

* F. A Fool to Try

These two questions are about famous daredevil families.

F1. This tightrope-walking family was prominent from the 1930s
to the 1960s. The great-grandson of the family patriarch
crossed Niagara Falls on a cable in 2012. Give their
family name.

F2. This father and son performed stunts in different eras.
They both were best known for using motorcycles to jump
great distances. Give their family name.
