Call It What It Is
Professor of Speed
by Mark Howell

Preaching the gospel to non-believers is a challenging task.

By the time you read this column, I will be en route by air to Cincinnati, Ohio for the Midwest Popular Culture Association conference. The event attracts over a thousand scholars, researchers, writers, and graduate students from around the nation and showcases the latest discoveries in popular culture methodology and pedagogy.

I will be there to present a paper on the changing nature of NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers and their efforts to more closely reflect changing attitudes in global society.

From a racing standpoint, this kind of information can be gleaned from daily life. A quick review of current events in NASCAR Nation shows drivers celebrating their marriages, their babies, their charitable causes, and their communities. This reality is a far cry from the NASCAR of old, the infamous beating and brawling of the 1979 Daytona 500 and stock car racing's forceful foray into mainstream culture. Gone are the days of Dale Earnhardt snarling and Tim Richmond carousing; today's NASCAR is a sport about engagements, marriages, pregnancies, tweets, and posts.

Not that today's NASCAR is free from physical confrontation. The problem is that post-race "fights" are anemic, devoid of true rivalry, and pretty much limited to the final ten events of the season. Because of this trend, the fights speak more to the officially-imposed pressure of elimination rounds during the Chase than they do of actual feuds between drivers.

Simply put: it's difficult to be a rough-and-tumble stock car driver when acting on your emotions might jeopardize your image as a good husband and father. This angle is the one I'm working in Cincinnati on Saturday before an audience that has gathered to hear about topics in "The Evolving Role of Female Heroes in Popular Culture".

As you might guess, I will be discussing these changes regarding men in NASCAR as compared to the influence of Danica Patrick on young girls who aspire to careers in professional sports. But I will also speak about the importance of women like Sara Christian and Louise Smith – women who competed in NASCAR during its early, hard-charging and harder-living days.

So how has NASCAR changed in this regard? Danica Patrick is ushering in a new era of race team sponsor come 2016: a non-Fortune 500 company known for its organic, gluten-free, and kosher baked goods. Such news, like American society itself, is a far cry from the years when Christian and Smith campaigned on dirt tracks east of the Mississippi.

And we today are aware of such women in the sport as Lesa France Kennedy, one level shy of being the queen of NASCAR Nation. Then there's a woman like Sherry Pollex, who turned her battle with ovarian cancer into a bully pulpit for fundraising and increased research. The powerful voice of Pollex has been amplified because of her direct connection to NASCAR.

It is a brave new world in which we live….

I have watched this "brave new world" develop from my place at the podium at popular culture conferences across North America. The first time I ever spoke about NASCAR culture and its role as a reflection of American society was in the spring of 1993. I was a student at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and working on my doctorate in American Culture Studies. My initial plan was to research the plight of stainless steel diners as small towns struggled against suburban sprawl.

That was the topic of my very first conference paper, one I delivered in Toledo, Ohio 25 years ago this year, almost to the day.

Fortunately, way back then, I had a dissertation director who knew of my background in NASCAR. He suggested I focus my attention on the sport of stock car racing and how it affected the evolution of professional sports in the United States.

In other words: how did NASCAR become a force within American popular culture?

That was 24 years ago. Two years later, I stood at a lectern before an audience at the Popular Culture Association's national conference in New Orleans. Fresh off several months working at various then-Winston Cup events, I shared my observations and my findings with an assembly of curious academics.

And they could not quite make sense of what I told them….

Granted, academia is not the first place you'd go to find NASCAR fans, but one thing I noticed as the years passed was that more and more college types were recognizing the relevance of NASCAR as a cultural phenomenon. By the time my first book about NASCAR was published in 1997, the tide was turning.

Five years after my first lecture explaining NASCAR, the audiences were larger and more knowledgeable. Some other academics jumped into the fray, pursued their own motorsports interests, and began exploring aspects of what we today call NASCAR Nation.

I guess some heathens were capable of being converted.

So here we are today, nearly a quarter of a century later, still addressing the evolution of this business Brad "Quick Foot" Keselowski refers to as "an entertainment sport, not a fair sport." Might I take his comment a step further and propose that the Sprint Cup Series is, above all else, "an influential sport?"

At least that's what I'm going to suggest during my sermon in Cincinnati, Ohio this Saturday. I hope you agree....

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: The 1994 SplitFire Spark Plugs 500 was the last race run at Dover prior to the track being concreted.  Mark Martin dominated the latter stages of the race but snatched a defeat with victory in sight.  What happened?

Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Tuesday's Answer:

Q:  The 1997 MBNA 200 is best known for Joe Bessey earning his one and only Busch victory.  However, there was some controversy.  How did Bessey get the lead on lap 186?

A:  Bessey got out front when Buckshot Jones spun out exiting turn 2.  Bessey never touched him but took the air off the Aquafresh Pontiac.  That was enough to spin out Jones, who hit the inside wall.  The crash can be seen here.  Rick Benjamin, Buddy Baker and Darrell Waltrip have the call for TNN.

Jones was done for the day and was credited with 23rd.  Afterwards, members of Buckshot Racing's crew reportedly attempted to block Bessey from getting to Victory Lane in protest.

Huh. Tricky. This seems a sufficiently official source:

http://www.iau.org/public/themes/constellations/

and you have to go all the way down to the footnotes to see that where
they show an "English name", it only means "the popular name in English".
Who knew? :-)

I did receive the details, but then forgot to look at them for a
few days. The scoring in the original game, as you will recall
from the introductory posting, is 2 points for an answer on the
first try (individual) and 1 point for an answer on the second try
(with team assistance) or given by a shorthanded team on behalf of
an empty seat. There were no shorthanded teams that day, so the
last clause can be ignored.

For tabulation purposes I will combine 3- and 4- point newgroup
answers as "1st" meaning "answered on the 1st try". Nobody in the
newsgroup scored 2 points for answering on the 2nd try in this round.
The questions are sorted here by difficulty in the original game.

Interesting. That so many had problems with Yukon is maybe not so
surprising given that there are competing codes. And Newfoundland
is a little tricky too. But Manitoba? I was able to get this one
correct, since although I don't know the Canadian codes very well,
I know the US codes decently. And I had a grok that the codes are
unique over US and Canada. Given this, there was only MB to choose
from inside the name itself.

Then agaín, it the Toronto quiz teams know the Candian codes, one
should maybe not expect them to know the US codes...

Jimmy Means Racing Crewman Injured in Hauler Fire

Jimmy Means Racing is dealing with loss this week, along with the injury of a crewman as their hauler caught fire on the way back to the team's shop this weekend. The blaze started en route home from Kentucky Speedway, gutting much of the inside of the trailer.  The cars appeared to be slightly charred but the main work area of the hauler looks like a total loss.  One of the team's crewmembers was also injured trying to put out the fire with firefighters.  Read more

Jeff Gordon's Duck Tour -- Was It Really Wicked Awesome?
Sitting in the Stands: A Fan's View
by S.D. Grady

Jeff Gordon Duck Boat

Just how special was Jeff Gordon's pre-race lap in a Boston Duck Tour boat? Did you miss its five seconds of fame during the Countdown to Green? Well, to this New England sports fan, it was the highlight of the entire race weekend at New Hampshire Motor Speedway -- one chock full of firsts and new records. Yes, it outshined the groundbreaking ceremony for the Northeast Motorsports Museum Friday afternoon. It bypassed the thrill of having the Camping World Truck Series take its 500th green flag. It totally blew by the second race in the 2015 Chase. It even managed to eke past Jeff Gordon setting a new Iron Man record with 789 consecutive race starts in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Really? It was that grand? The boat is kind of silly looking, something you find in tourist attractions across America. How can one with a No. 24 banner stuck to its side mean something extra?

Because this is New England.

In 2002, the New England Patriots had just won the Super Bowl. Boston needed to put on a celebration. The mayor asked around at the various trolley companies for transportation through the city streets in our first rolling rally. No, the team wouldn't just get on a stage and make speeches. Millions of fans would jam the city sidewalks in the middle of winter and scream out adulation for their champions. The Boston Duck Boat Tours -- a fledgling company established just eight years earlier -- stepped up to the plate and offered up their ducks for free.   The parade was awesome!

Over the next thirteen years, including during Snowmageddon in 2015, the Ducks have been called upon repeatedly to carry our championship teams, the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics, and they've answered the summons each time they've brought home the hardware. Not only do the members of the winning teams ride the ducks, they bring their families, support staff, trophies and anything else that can be jammed on top of the crafts. It is a party of epic proportions.

Now, Jeff Gordon may not be the reigning NASCAR champion, but his 23 years as pilot of the No. 24 Chevrolet is certainly something to celebrate. Add that it's his final appearance at NHMS as a driver, notching that epic 789th start at the same time and it called for more than just a collector coin and extra handshake during driver intros. The Duck Boat fit the bill.

Every New England fan in the stands understood in their very bones what that Duck meant. Jeff Gordon is our Champion, one who ought to be held up and thanked in as grand a fashion as humanly possible. So we did, under a cloudless September sky in the tree-covered hills of New Hampshire. His entire team and family were welcomed onto the Duck. Daughter Ella even gave a little jump of excitement when she climbed on board. They toured the track for the very last time and the stands erupted in cheers of gratitude.

It was a nearly perfect day -- one I shall always cherish.

2014 AAA 400

So, we're in the Chase.  Jeff Gordon sorely needs a win. Do you think he might be able to repeat his performance from last year's AAA 400?

Numbers Game: Sylvania 300
by Tom Bowles

0

Wins for Kevin Harvick at Dover in the Sprint Cup Series. Harvick, the reigning series champion will likely need a victory there to advance into the next round of this Chase.

1

Lap led by Joey Logano this Chase. Logano, third at Loudon would be the season points leader if the standings didn't reset themselves after Richmond.

2

Points between 11th place Jamie McMurray in the standings and 14th place Paul Menard. Only the top 12 drivers make the next round of the Chase.

3

Joe Gibbs Racing drivers to finish inside the top 5 at New Hampshire. The JGR trio of Matt Kenseth, Denny Hamlin, and Carl Edwards sit 1-2-4 in points two races into the Chase.

4

Races since a Sprint Cup driver failed to finish due to mechanical failure. Michael Annett and Matt Kenseth were the last to do so; both blew engines during the Bristol night race in August.

5

Wins by Matt Kenseth this season, including Sunday's triumph at New Hampshire. Only in 2013 (seven victories) has Kenseth taken more trophies in Cup.

8

Chasers to run inside the top 10 Sunday. Only Greg Biffle (fourth) and Kasey Kahne (ninth) broke the string of contenders.

8

Toyota teams preparing to run full-time next year. Toyota will drop from nine to eight with the subtraction of two-car Michael Waltrip Racing. Sunday, they announced Furniture Row Racing will join their group next year, but the No. 78 team will only field one full-time car.

13

Spots gained by Brad Keselowski after being penalized for jumping the final green-flag restart. Keselowski's rally left him 12th at the finish.

23

Points lost by Kevin Harvick after running out of fuel in New Hampshire's final three laps. Harvick, leading at the time wound up 21st and now sits 23 points out of a top 12 transfer spot.

78%

Of cautions Sunday that were for actual on-track accidents. Only two were for "other" issues. One was for fluid on the track from Landon Cassill and the other was for a spring rubber lying on the racetrack.

216

Laps led by Kevin Harvick at New Hampshire, the most of any driver.

$121,210

Money won by Martin Truex, Jr. for running eighth Sunday.

$123,533

Money won by Kyle Busch for finishing 37th.

TODAY AT FRONTSTRETCH:

by Danny Peters

~~~~~~~~~~
FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:
Q: The 1997 MBNA 200 is best known for Joe Bessey earning his one and only Busch victory.  However, there was some controversy.  How did Bessey get the lead on lap 186?
Check back Wednesday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!
Monday's Answer:
Q:  For two years, the Indy Racing League held races at then-Dover Downs International Raceway.  In the 1999 event, Eliseo Salazar was involved in a nasty crash.  What happened?
A: Salazar was in turn 2 when the rear wing folded down, making it completely useless.  Salazar spun and hit the wall on the drivers' side hard enough that his FUBU-sponsored No. 6 got up on its side.  Salazar then spun down the track and was hit by John Hollandsworth, Jr.  The crash can be seen here.
And now it's time to start another QFTCI Current Events game.
As usual, these rounds will be posted concurrently with other,
non-current-events games, and all current events rounds through
the season will be scored as a separate game.
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any
answers have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to
give the answers that were correct on those dates.
On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers in a single followup to the newsgroup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.
All questions were written by members of the Bloor St. Irregulars,
and are used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may
have been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information
see my 2015-08-18 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".
No, 12. On a question that asks for "name and rank", "lieutenant..."
