Dover Motorsports, Inc. Sells Nashville Superspeedway
On Thursday, Dover Motorsports, Inc. announced that an agreement is in place to sell the Nashville Superspeedway to technology giant NeXovation, Inc.
The 1.333-mile concrete oval located in Lebanon, Tenn., and its assets will be sold for $27 million, with the new owners assuming a debt balance of $18.8 million in infrastructure revenue bonds. The deal is expected to be finalized before the end of September.
"This is a great deal for all concerned insofar as we can transfer an under-utilized, high quality asset to NeXovation, who will create and implement a new business model and re-activate Nashville Superspeedway for the benefit of everyone in the area," said Dover Motorsports CEO Denis McGlynn in a statement.
From 2001 to 2011, Nashville played host to 21 Nationwide Series races and 13 Camping World Truck Series races, as well as Verizon IndyCar Series events and the ARCA Racing Series. Since the track ceased holding NASCAR national series events, it has been used as a test track for NASCAR teams.
"What we intend to do is take the speedway and turn it into a 52-week-a-year venue dedicated not only to motorsports, but other experiential events," added Robert Sexton, CEO of NeXovation. "We're not just taking the existing facility; we're going to be adding a lot more infrastructure on the property and a lot of different opportunities for events."
Sexton also stated the track could open for those new events by the end of the year.
Rain Washes Out Truck Practices
Mother Nature didn't cooperate with the Camping World Truck Series on Thursday as rained washed out both practices for Friday's Lucas 200 at Dover.
Teams were on track for only about 15 minutes on Thursday before the rains arrived. Kyle Busch, who is looking for his fourth win in five starts this season, turned the fastest lap in the short practice with a speed of 156.488 mph. German Quiroga, John Hunter Nemechek, Darrell Wallace, Jr. and Timothy Peters rounded out the top 5.
NASCAR has decided to set the field by owner's points due to the lack of practice time and has scheduled a one-hour practice on Friday from 12:40 p.m. ET to 1:40 p.m. ET in preparation for that evening's Lucas Oil 200.
Kyle Busch will lead the field to green and defending series champion and current points leader Matt Crafton will start second.
TNT Set to Begin Coverage
Starting next week at Pocono, TNT will begin its all-access coverage for the six-week NASCAR Summer Series.
Over that six-week stretch, TNT's coverage will feature segments with a featured driver and team following them for the week leading up to the race. TNT also will feature a new addition to its race coverage with the Toyota Camry test car, which will take the viewers at home inside the car and closer to the action on track.
The drivers that will be featured over TNT's six weeks of coverage are: Kyle Larson (Pocono), Austin Dillon (Michigan) and AJ Allmendinger (Daytona). These segments will air as part of the Countdown to Green pre-race show.
TNT will return its top play-by-play crew with Kyle Petty and Wally Dallenbach as analysts joining lead play-by-play announcer Adam Alexander for each race. Alexander will also serve as host for Countdown to Green, along with Petty, Dallenbach and veteran crew chief Larry McReynolds. Ralph Sheheen, Matt Yocum, Marty Snider and Chris Neville will cover the action on pit road.

The Sprint Cup Series travels to Dover International Speedway for the 13th race of the 2014 season on Sunday, June 1. Television coverage of the FedEx 400 benefiting Autism Speaks begins at 1 PM ET on FOX; your local Motor Racing Network (MRN) affiliate and SiriusXM Radio Channel 90 will handle the radio broadcast. Drivers will compete for at least 400 laps (400 miles) before the checkered flag waves.
Records and Facts
Tony Stewart was the winner of this race in 2013. His victory was notable because it marked only the fifth time in 88 races that a driver won at Dover from outside the top 20 starting positions (Stewart started 22nd). As for the deepest starter to lead the field to the checkered flag, Kyle Petty gained that honor by coming from 37th in 1995.
Rick Hendrick didn't build Dover International Speedway, but from the way his drivers perform there, it would be easily mistakable. In total, Hendrick Motorsports drivers have 15 wins there, led by Jimmie Johnson with eight. Don't count out Jeff Gordon either; the four-time champion has visited Victory Lane four times.

"I always tell people that almost more than any other track we go to, you can feel the sensation of speed at Dover and Darlington more than anywhere else – even more than when you run 210 mph at Michigan. But I'm not sure what it is about the place that I like, I've just always liked it. It's a fun place to race. It's a lot like Bristol, just bigger. You kind of fall down into the corners and it really plants your butt into the seat. You have to stay on your toes and always kind of be looking ahead of yourself because things can happen fast there. I've had some good times and I've had some bad times at Dover – the flip in 2009 comes to mind – but I always am pretty excited to come here. You want to win at every track, but Dover ranks pretty high on my list. I've got a few of the monster trophies for the Nationwide Series, but I want a big one holding my Cup car." – Joey Logano

Keepin' It Short: Going Back to the Roots

In 1949, Bill France and Alvin Hawkins started holding races at Bowman Gray Stadium. 66 years later, the venerable track in Winston-Salem, NC continues on as one of the sport's most historic racetracks. NASCAR's first sanctioned weekly oval plays to some of the largest crowds in short track racing, week-in and week-out. This weekend, it will not only host the traditional Modifieds but it'll also have the K&N East Series, making its fourth visit to the track. The same oval that saw Richard Petty win his 100th race will see some of the future stars of NASCAR do battle to try to claim the winner's share at the home of the Hot Modifieds.
Fonty Flock was the first winner at Bowman Gray. He took the checkered flag in NASCAR's first sanctioned race on May 18, 1949. Bob Welborn won the first Grand National (now Cup series) race at the Stadium in 1958, while 2015 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Rex White is the all-time wins leader at the track with six. Glen Wood, Richard Petty and Junior Johnson are tied for second on the list with four each. Sound like a legendary group? It is; in fact, seven of the 12 winners in the Cup Series at the Stadium are members of the Hall of Fame.
Matt DiBenedetto was victorious in the first K&N visit to Bowman Gray in 2011. He was actually more of a survivor than a winner, leading the distance while the race was slowed by 15 cautions for 87 of the 156 circuits. Corey LaJoie chased DiBenedetto to the checkered flag in a fender-banging duel, coming up short but creating a standing ovation from a crowd exciting to have a NASCAR series back at the legendary oval. LaJoie redeemed himself the second year when he beat Darrell Wallace, Jr. to the checkered flag in another green-white-checkered finish, with paint being traded all of the way to the finish line. Last year, Ben Kennedy took the win over Dylan Kwasniewski, leading the final 27 laps in the first race to finish in the scheduled number of laps (150).
The stands at Bowman Gray will be packed on Saturday night as the regular Modifieds will duel it out for 100 laps while the K&N cars will mix it up for 150. Just like 66 years ago, the cars will beat, bang, rout and gouge their way to the finish with the victor taking the spoils. The fans will be treated to short track racing on a track that started life as the running track around a football field. So, if you are in the Winston-Salem area on Saturday night, make the trip to the Stadium to be part of another page in the history of Bowman Gray.

Q: Geoff Bodine had a very good first couple of days of the 1994 Budweiser 500 race weekend. Bodine qualified on the outside pole, had a fast car in race trim and managed to lead 14 laps in the race. However, he didn't even make it to the one-quarter mark before he was eliminated. What caused his early exit?

Q: Today, Jimmie Johnson is considered to be the King of Dover. In 2003, he was already considered quite good there, having swept both races in his rookie year. However, Johnson's Dover luck ran out during the MBNA Armed Forces Family 400. What happened?
A: Johnson was running in third place when he hit a strange combination of fluids that combined to make a white slurry-esque substance exiting turn two. These fluids came from the No. 22 of Ward Burton. Bill Davis Racing was experimenting with new engine and radiator parts at the time and the slurry substance would come out when a heat exchanger failed, resulting in the mixing of water and oil. Burton's teammate, Kenny Wallace, had suffered a near identical failure in the Coca-Cola 600 the previous week. On the slurry, there was no traction and Johnson simply wiped out and hit the inside wall. The crash can be seen here.

Johnson was able to restart the car and drive it back to the garage. However, he was out on the spot. Ward Burton was done shortly afterward as well.
