Digest for rec.games.trivia@googlegroups.com - 5 updates in 3 topics

msb@vex.net (Mark Brader): Apr 05 02:01AM -0500

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2020-01-27
(and I mean it this time!), and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of MI5 and are used here by
permission, but have been reformatted and may have been retyped
and/or edited by me. For further information see my 2019-10-16
companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian Inquisition
(QFTCI*)".

** Game 3, Round 9 - Arts and Literature - "Classics Illustrated"

From 1941 to 1971, "Classics Illustrated" took great novels and
turned them into graphic novels, or as we said at that time,
comic books. Please see the 15 covers reproduced on the handout:

http://www.eskimo.com/~scs/msb/3-9/class.jpg

from which, of course, we have removed the title of the original
classic novel. We'll give you the picture letter and the date
when the novel was originally published, and you give the title
(in English -- some of them are translations).

For your convenience, I have sorted the round in order of the
handout, interspersing the 5 decoys with the others. Identify
those 5 novels as well if you like for fun, but for no points.

1. A (1897).
2. B (1847).
3. C (decoy).
4. D (1852).
5. E (1903).
6. F (1872).
7. G (1605).
8. H (decoy).
9. I (1870).
10. J (1831).
11. K (decoy).
12. L (1851).
13. M (1826).
14. N (decoy).
15. O (decoy).

** Game 3, Round 10 - Reality Challenge Round

* A. History, or "Survivor"

A1. Millvina Dean, who died at 97 in 2009, was the last living
survivor of what event?

A2. Who was the last surviving astronaut of the Mercury Seven?

* B. Sports, or "The Amazing Race"

B1. In 1954, Britain's Roger Bannister ran the first mile in
under 4 minutes, 3:59.4 to be exact. This record lasted only
46 days before John Landy of Australia lowered it to 3:58.0.
Another 6 weeks later, the two runners met in a race billed
as "The Mile of the Century" at the Commonwealth Games --
in what city?

B2. Who holds the women's world record for the 100 m race,
at 10.49 seconds?

* C. Entertainment, or "The Voice"

C1. This actress is known for her nasal voice and thick New
York accent. She starred as Fran Fine in the TV series
"The Nanny" and appeared in the movies "This Is Spinal Tap"
and "American Hot Wax". Name her.

C2. This stand-up comic's persona features an exaggerated shrill
voice and an emphasis on crude humor. He voiced the
parrot Iago in Disney's "Aladdin" and the Aflac duck in
TV commercials. Who is he?

* D. Literature, or "Big Brother"

D1. This big brother taunts little sister Scout with the nickname
"Miss Priss". He is a moody adolescent and tells Scout
that she isn't to bother him at school but must "stick to
first grade". What is his first name?.

D2. This big brother to Georgina is her guardian, and their fond
relationship is evident in scenes set at an inn at Lambton.
He has already had to intervene to prevent her attempted
seduction by the feckless George Wickham. Name him.

* E. Geography, or "The Hills"

Name them.

E1. This hill is actually a series of hills to the east of
Santiago, Cuba, running north to south.

E2. According to the Gospels, this hill, also known as Golgotha,
was the site immediately outside Jerusalem where Jesus
was crucified.

* F. Science, or "The Deadliest Catch"

F1. This puffer fish is noted for its ability to inflate
itself so greatly with air and water that it becomes globular
in form. It is sometimes used in Japan as food, where
it must be carefully cleaned and prepared by a specially
trained chef to avoid poisoning diners. What are these
fish called in Japanese?

F2. These fish are flattened and wider than they are long.
They have fleshy enlarged pectoral fins that look like wings
and cephalic fins projecting like horns from the front of
the head. Sailors believed these fish were dangerous to
humans and could sink boats by pulling on their anchors,
but they are really placid and inoffensive. Name these fish.

**OOPS!!** -- I was supposed to have been posting Rounds 7-8 of
Game *3* in this thread.

Well, I think most people would prefer to simply play the rounds
that were posted. So for newsgroup purposes I'll count these two
rounds as part of Game 3, and move the rounds that I meant to post
this time into Game 4.

Unfortunately this means that Game 3, as played here, will have
had two Entertainment rounds, and two Science rounds, but no Sports
or Canadiana; and Game 4, as played here, will have two Canadiana
rounds and two Sports rounds, but no Science or Entertainment.
Sorry about the screwup, folks.

Oh, and the correct date for these Game 4 rounds is 2020-02-03.
Not that I imagine it made a difference to interpreting the questions!

> you the year of the movie's release, where it is set, and three

> 1. 1989, Brooklyn: Danny Aiello, Ruby Dee, Rosie Perez.

"Do the Right Thing". 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Stephen, and Pete.

> 2. 1957, New York County: Henry Fonda, Martin Balsam, Lee J, Cobb.

"12 Angry Men". 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Pete, and Calvin.

New York County is just part of the City of New York. In most places
outside of a courthouse it's better known as the Borough of Manhattan.

> 3. 1981, Jakarta: Sigourney Weaver, Michael Murphy, Bembol Roco.

"The Year of Living Dangerously". 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, Stephen,
Pete, and Calvin.

> 4. 1996, Canton, Mississippi: Samuel L. Jackson, Matthew
> McConaughey, Kevin Spacey.

"A Time to Kill". 4 for Joshua and Stephen.

"Mississippi Burning" was set in Mississippi, but not in Canton,
was released in 1988, and did not have any of those actors in it.
So, not the best guess.

> 5. 1954, Greenwich Village, New York City: Thelma Ritter, Raymond
> Burr, Grace Kelly.

"Rear Window". 4 for Joshua, Stephen, Pete, and Calvin.

> 6. 1958, Mississippi: Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Dame Judith Anderson.

"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". 4 for Stephen.

"Cool Hand Luke" did have Paul Newman in it, but not Burl Ives or
Judith Anderson, it was set in Florida, and it was released in 1967.
Also not the best quess.

> 7. 1990, Texas: Don Johnson, Virginia Madsen, Jennifer Connelly.

"The Hot Spot". 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, and Stephen.

> 8. 1999, New York City: John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino.

"Summer of Sam". 4 for Joshua and Stephen.

> 9. 1981, Florida: William Hurt, Richard Crenna, Ted Danson.

"Body Heat". 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, and Stephen.

> 10. 1991, Los Angeles: John Turturro, John Goodman, Judy Davis.

"Barton Fink". 4 for Joshua, Dan Blum, and Stephen.

> * Game 4, Round 8 - Science - The Human Body

In the original Game 4, this was the hardest round. But the
original Game 3 had rounds of more widely varying difficulty than
the original Game 4 did; and as a result, of the set of rounds making
up Game 3 as played here in the newsgroup, this was not the hardest.
You've already seen the one that was.
