May I suggest not mixing quoted text and new text on the same line?
It makes the eye want to skip over the answers. You could use a
layout similar to what Calvin and I do.

> MARK B - 9 (I wasnt sure how generous you guys are with giving points.
> B12 was given but B3 is the answer) Would you give Mark a tick or a
> cross for that one?

I'd up to you, but I'd expect to be scored as wrong.

People also like, I think, to see which questions they were marked as
correct on. I use one format for that; Calvin uses another.

Thanks for running the quiz.

These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on 2019-08-06,
and should be interpreted accordingly.

On each question you may give up to two answers, but if you give
both a right answer and a wrong answer, there is a small penalty.
Please post all your answers to the newsgroup in a single followup,
based only on your own knowledge. (In your answer posting, quote
the questions and place your answer below each one.) I will reveal
the correct answers in about 3 days.

All questions were written by members of Unnatural Axxxe and are
used here by permission, but have been reformatted and may have
been retyped and/or edited by me. For further information see
my 2019-01-22 companion posting on "Questions from the Canadian
Inquisition (QFTCI*)".

** Final, Round 7 - Geography

* A River Runs Through it

1. Which North American river flows downstream from Bismarck ND
through Sioux City and Omaha?

2. What is the main river in Glasgow, Scotland? This waterway
was historically important for trade and shipbuilding.

3. Which river, rising on the Tibetan Plateau, is Pakistan's major
river, reaching the Arabian Sea south of Karachi?

* New-Ish Countries

In the past 30 years 34 new countries have been created, many
from the dissolution of the USSR and Yugoslavia, and others as a
result of anti-colonial or other independence movements. You name
the country.

4. On 1990-03-21 this country became independent of South Africa.
Previously, it was known as South West Africa.

5. On 1993-05-25 this country seceded and gained independence from
Ethiopia. The two nations later warred over disputed territory
until a peace agreement in 2018.

6. On 2008-02-17 this country unilaterally declared independence
from Serbia. A number of countries recognize its independence,
but it isn't a member of the United Nations.

* World Currencies

We name the currency and give some information about the country.
You name the country.

7. Lek; a country on the Adriatic.
8. Gourde; a Caribbean country.
9. Dong; an Asian country.

* The Great Lakes

Yeah, we think they're pretty great.

10. Which Great Lake sits entirely within the borders of the US?

11. As noted by Longfellow and Lightfoot, what is the Chippewayan
name for Lake Superior?

12. Hydrologically, Lakes Huron and Michigan are really one
big lake. Nomenclaturally, name the strait that connects
the two.

* Landlocked Countries

There are 44 countries that are landlocked: without direct access
to an ocean or to ocean-accessible sea such as the Mediterranean.

13. The world's 9th-largest country is the largest landlocked
one. It's bordered by Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan,
Turkmenistan, and the landlocked Caspian Sea. Name it.

14. South America has just two landlocked countries. Name *either
one*.

15. Two countries are doubly landlocked, i.e. they that are
completely surrounded by other landlocked countries. One is
located in Europe, while the other is a Central Asian nation
and former Soviet republic. Name *either one*.

** Final, Round 8 - Sports

* Pro Wrestling

The "squared circle", professional wrestling, has had many legendary
characters. Here are some from the Golden Age of the 1980s. From
the birth name, you tell us the ring name.

1. Born André René Roussimoff, this wrestler appeared in the movie
"The Princess Bride".

2. Born Terry Gene Bollea, he anchored pro wrestling's crossover
from niche entertainment to pop culture. He beat up Sylvester
Stallone in "Rocky 3" and body-slammed <answer 1> at SkyDome.

3. Born Randall Mario Poffo, he married his valet Miss Elizabeth
and beat up Peter Parker in the first Spider-Man movie.

* Les Expos

Recent talk of sharing a team with Tampa revived memories of
Canada's original Major League Baseball franchise. Plus, it's
the 50th anniversary of their first season in 1969.

4. To win an expansion franchise, Mayor Jean Drapeau promised a
domed baseball stadium in 2 years -- and hey, it only took
until 1977 before the Expos moved into the multi-purpose
Olympic Stadium. Where did they play before that?

5. In the early years, the Expos' best player and fan favorite
was nicknamed "Le Grand Orange" because of his bright red hair.
What was his real surname?

6. Last year an Expos superstar was inducted into Hall of Fame.
A slugging outfielder, one of the most exciting hitters of his
time, he also played for the Angels and won the 2004 American
League MVP award. Name him.

* Sports Trophies

When the Raptors won the NBA championship, many of us learned that
Larry O'Brien has a trophy named for him! These questions are on
other sports trophies and awards.

7. Canada's top university football player receives which award?

8. Name the trophy awarded to the American Hockey League champions.

9. Originally the Jules Rimet Trophy went to the winners of this
quadrennial competition, but Jules had stipulated that the
first 3-time winner could keep it. Which they did, in 1970.
Now a more prosaically named trophy is awarded for this major
global event. Name the event.

* Posthumous Baseball Hall of Famers

The late great Roy Halladay wasn't the first person inducted into
Cooperstown posthumously. Here are three more who died too soon
or had to wait too long.

10. This legendary first baseman was elected in December 1939,
but died of a degenerative disease in June, 1941, just weeks
before his induction ceremony.

11. One year after his death at age 38, this Pittsburgh Pirates
right fielder became the first Latin-American and first Caribbean
player enshrined in the Hall of Fame.

12. Known as "The Lip", this colorful manager was inducted into
the Hall in 1994, 3 years after his death and 21 years after
his retirement.

* We the North

Hurray for the Raptors! This triple honors our recent champions.

13. Winner of the NBA's Most Improved Player Award this season,
he's a Cameroonian forward nicknamed "Spicy P." Name him.

14. Kawhi Leonard's buzzer-beating Game 7 shot bounced 4 times but
eventually went in. It soothed the painful memory of a similar
shot against the same playoff opponent, years ago. Which Raptor
missed that other famous shot in 2001?

15. Kawhi was controversially acquired for Raptor great Demar
DeRozan. Two other players were involved in the trade: name
*either one*.

The Big Bopper. 4 for Dan Blum, Dan Tilque, Joshua, Calvin, Bruce,

Yes, "What's My Line" was a different show, though played in a very
similar manner.

"American Bandstand", Dick Clark. (Clark, not Clay, was his

Bruce, and Pete.

> were activated as Vincent Price warned the audience to "Scream!

William Castle. 4 for Joshua.

Another gimmick in "The Tingler" (1959) was that although it was
in black-and-white, in one scene red blood was shown. The scene
was actually filmed in color, but everything on the set that wasn't
already white, black, or gray had been painted in those colors, and
the actress wore gray makeup; thus everything except the "blood"
appeared just as if it had been shot in B&W. Every release print
then had to have the color scene especially spliced in. See:

> 11. 3D was another gimmick and by 1954 the novelty was wearing off.
> That didn't stop Alfred Hitchcock from shooting one movie in 3D,

"Dial M For Murder". 4 for Joshua and Bruce.

Some of the shots feature unusual low angles with foreground objects
close to the camera; this is why. See:

http://alfredhitchblog.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/dialm2.jpg

At the original game, one of the wrong answers given was "North
by Northwest"; that movie would have been a better choice for 3D,
I think, but it didn't appear until 1959, when the fad was over.

Hmm. That's correct as well, and if Wikipedia is correct (in the
article "Betting (poker)", there are additional terms in poker alone.

I had #7 wrong. And double-wrong. I was under the impression that Île de
la Cité is the other island, so I gave what thought was the other name.
But the other island is Île Saint-Lois, not Île de Saint-Michel.

Saint-Michel in this context is one of the bridges leading to Île de la
Cité, and the nearby Métro station is Saint Michle Notre-Dame.

U are almost right, there. (Hey, I'm sure I'd make more mistakes
typing Swedish.)

It's an interesting station, by the way, as the RER Line B platforms
are *under* the south branch of the river.

What a question!

Over here the definition of autumn is when the 24-hour average
temperature has been below 10'C for five days in a row. (I think
it's five, but I am not sure.)

But, OK, now it is Toronto rules. And Toronto autumn. Hm, 20:36?

Addition after reading the rot-13:
And they want the time zone as well? Ah, so they asked about the
equinox? I stand by my answer, and the qualification that is local
time Toronto.

Can't we talk about 20 km walking instead? :-)
