Pat Tryson Tentatively Working with JTG
Pat Tryson, recently fired from his position as Martin Truex, Jr.'s crew chief for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series team Michael Waltrip Racing, will be working with JTG Daugherty Racing in this weekend's events at Michigan International Speedway, according to a statement released by JTG Daugherty Racing co-owner Tad Geschickter.
"Pat Tryson is a consistent NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Chase crew chief who is in transition," said Geschickter. "While he is looking for his next crew chief opportunity, Pat has agreed - with the blessing of our partners at Michael Waltrip Racing - to help JTG Daugherty Racing and crew chief Frank Kerr try to improve our results."
Bobby Labonte, the organization's lone driver this season, has an average finish of 23rd through 14 races, with his best result coming in the form of a fourth-place finish in the season opening Daytona 500. The fourth-place showing is Labonte's lone top 10 of the season, who will have RainEater Wiper Blades on as a sponsor for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 this weekend.
Before Tryson began his duties as a crew chief for Truex, he also spent some time at Roush Fenway Racing and Penske Racing with drivers such as Greg Biffle and Kurt Busch. Chad Johnston is Tryson's replacement atop the No. 56 pit box.
Bruton Smith Re-files Lawsuit Against Cabarrus County
A lawsuit to the tune of $80 million has been re-filed by Charlotte Motor Speedway owner and CEO of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. Bruton Smith against the city of Concord and Cabarrus County.
In 2007, a disagreement between Smith and county officials over the construction of zMax Dragway had Smith threatening to move his racetrack elsewhere. Weeks of deliberation led to Concord and Cabarrus County offering an $80 million incentive plan to improve the area surrounding the racetrack, including road development in and around the designated spot.
Smith dropped the suit last June after filing in 2009, but re-filed just recently over disagreements on when the reimbursements would be issued. According to WBTV, Smith believed that all $80 million would be paid off within six years while the city and county officials say it could take as much as 40 years even though neither side had agreed to an official time frame. Both parties continue to have discussions, with Smith requesting that the government ensures an agreement is reached and handles the damages caused by the mix-up.
Under North Carolina law, a lawsuit must be re-filed within a year after it is dropped in order to remain active, and Smith was coming close to that time period.
Charlotte Motor Speedway has three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekends on its calendar in addition to races held at zMax Dragway and The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Atlanta Ticket-Buyers Can Make Laps Around Track
Atlanta Motor Speedway is giving fans some extra incentive to purchase tickets to the AdvoCare 500 on September 4th by allowing qualifying ticket buyers to take laps around the speedway in their personal vehicles. Fans who purchase two tickets valued at least $59 each will get the chance to tackle the 1.5-mile track themselves. Fans must purchase tickets by July 1st and can redeem vouchers from 9 AM - 7 PM on June 27th and 28th and from 9 AM - 5 PM on July 1st.
Nationwide, Grand-Am Rolex Series Racing Could be Heading to Indianapolis
The Indianapolis Star is reporting that Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials are interested in adding a Nationwide race on its annual Sprint Cup weekend. The Nationwide Series currently races at a local short track, Lucas Oil Raceway on that weekend. The race comes with a guaranteed check of $700,000 because of the television contract with ESPN. Officials are trying to build a more exciting weekend around the Sprint Cup race in hopes of raising attendance.
Another possibility for the Brickyard 400 weekend would be adding the Grand-Am Rolex Series, which is owned by NASCAR. A speedway official confirmed there have been talks about bringing the series to Indianapolis as soon as 2012. The sanctioning fee of the event is estimated at $200,000.

Frontstretch Folio: Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400

This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series head to Michigan International Speedway for the Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400. Sunday's race will be the 15th of 36 races this season, and will be broadcast live Sunday, June 19th, at 1 PM ET on TNT and 12 PM ET on MRN Radio. Drivers will compete for 200 laps (400 miles) before taking the checkered flag.
Records and Facts
Ryan Newman holds the track qualifying record, with a lap of 37.069 sec at 194.232 mph in qualifying for the 2005 Batman Begins 400. Newman finished 15th in the race after leading three of the 200 laps. The pole was Newman's fifth of eight poles that season. Newman finished out the 2005 season ninth in points with one win, eight top 5s, 16 top 10s, and an average finish of 15th in 36 races.
Dale Jarrett holds the record for fastest race run at Michigan International Speedway, with a speed of 173.997 mph in the 1999 Kmart 400 presented by Castrol Super Clean. Jarrett led 150 of the 200 laps, and had a margin of victory of 0.505 sec over second-place Jeff Gordon. Jeff Burton finished third, followed by Ward Burton and Bobby Labonte to round out the top 5. The win was Jarrett's second of four victories that season, finishing out the year with the four wins, 24 top 5s, 29 top 10s, and an average finish of seventh. He won the championship that season.
Denny Hamlin is the defending race winner of this event, leading 123 of the 200 laps to win the 2010 Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 by 1.246 sec over second-place Kasey Kahne. Kurt Busch finished third, followed by Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart to round out the top 5. The win was Hamlin's fifth of eight victories last season, finishing out the year with eight wins, 14 top 5s, 18 top 10s, and an average finish of 13th to finish second in points.

"Michigan is a fun track. It's just a track where you can move around, change your car, and you can get out of line of the guy in front of you. It's not an aero-sensitive track like a lot of them. It definitely is a benefit, as far as that's concerned. I like a track where the driver can make somewhat of a difference. When his car's not handling well, he's got multiple grooves to change the way his balance is on his race car and Michigan is one of those race tracks. Your car's not always going to be perfect, but you can almost make it that way by the way you drive there. We see guys from the top to the bottom and it's a drafting race track. Keepin' It Short: It's Called the Hell Tour For a Reason

The UMP late models are embarking on their annual Summer Nationals Tour which, as most dirt fans know, is also called the Hell Tour. The series will run 25 races in 32 days. Things did not get off too a good start as the first night of the tour was postponed due to rain on Wednesday night. The Brownstown Speedway race has been rescheduled to one of the three open dates in the schedule on July 12th. The end result is that there are now 25 races in 31 days. The drivers who choose to run all of the events are truly the most hard core racers in the world.
Thanks to Onedirt.com, here are a few of statistics that can put the entire trek of the Hell Tour in perspective. The schedule has races in nine states at 24 different race tracks. There are twelve races in Illinois, three in Indiana, two in Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin and one each in Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan and Missouri. For any teams doing the entire 25 race schedule they'll travel 4,493 miles according to Mapquest. Last season there were nine drivers who ran in all 29 races that took place on the 33 days of the tour. There were also over 300 drivers that took part in at least one race. The tour saw over thirty cars at 25 of the 29 races and averaged 38 cars per night.
But at least all of the travel and hard work will be worth the effort. The tour pays out some pretty impressive cash which is why the drivers come out and put themselves through the torture over the month-long odyssey. The payouts vary depending on when the races take place. The weekend events pay out $10,000 to win while the weekday races pay $5,000. There are seven $10,000 races and 18 $5,000 races which calculates to a total of $160,000.
The truly impressive part of the tour is just the challenge to those teams who elect to run all of the races. Generally they are on the road away from their race shops for the entire time, and when they have troubles they have to improvise and worth with what they have. There are stories of teams rehanging an entire body on a race car in the parking lot of a hotel and leaving the old body in the dumpster before they headed out to the race track. Changing an engine at a race track is no easy feat when you're in a fancy garage at a Cup level facility, and doing it in the pits at Belle Clair Speedway in East Belleville, IL is a lot more impressive. The key to accomplishing anything that seems nearly impossible is making sure the equipment is organized and well taken care of. It is much easier to run the whole tour if you don't tear up your equipment, but it's dirt racing so there are bound to be equipment casualties.

Whelen All-American National Championship Update
Rain kept the top guns in the point standings from adding to their totals this past week with the top three and four of the top five not racing due to rainouts. Nate Monteith took two shots at notching another win this week but failed to visit victory lane for a seventh time, though he did land two top-5 finishes to his resume. His top 5s, however, did add 42 points to his season total which allowed him to jump over Frank Deiny, Jr. and Zachary Hausler. While Keith Rocco, Philip Morris and Lee Pulliam find themselves at least 100 points ahead of the rest of the pack, the battle for positions four through nine are separated by a mere 13 points. C.E. Falk and Ryan Preece both notched victories last while Daniel Pope, II knocked Davin Scites out of the top 10--he sits just 38 points behind Nate Monteith in fourth place.

Under the points structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 20. Second place receives two fewer points, and so-on through the field. Race winners receive an additional five bonus points. For example, if there are 20 cars, the winner receives 45 points, second gets 38 and third 36. If there are 15 cars, the winner received 35 points, second gets 28 and third 26. The top 18 races count towards the National Championship for a driver. A perfect season for a driver would be 18 race wins with 20 car fields which equates to 810 points. The first driver to reach 810 points is declared the National Champion in the event of a tie.

Q: Throughout the mid to late 1990's, CART attempted to slow speeds at Michigan and California Speedways with the usage of the Hanford Device, a special rear wing that cut off airflow beneath the rear wing. However, there was an unintended side effect of the new wing. What was it?

Q: The US 500 mentioned in Wednesday's trivia question was actually a second race at Michgan that was added for 1996 only. The traditional July event, the Marlboro 500, was also marred by a early crash that year. What happened?
A: After the original start of the race was waved off due to poor alignment, Lap 2 marked the official start of the race. Emerson Fittipladi got a great start from his fifth starting spot and attempted to challenge Greg Moore for third in Turn 2 on the outside. Unfortunately, it appeared that Fittipaldi was not quite clear of Moore before attempting to turn down in front of him, and as a result Fittipaldi's left rear tire touched Moore's right front, resulting in Fittipaldi spinning and hitting the wall hard. The crash can be seen here.
49-year old Fittipaldi suffered crushed vertebra and spinal cord injuries in the crash that effectively ended his driving career and nearly paralyzed him. However, with the help of medical advances, he was able to walk out of the hospital and is still mobile today. Just last weekend, he served as the Chief Steward of the Grand Prix of Canada in Montreal.
