What to Watch: Tuesday

- Today, Goodyear will wrap up their tire test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.  Since IMS grinded the surface down the last time the track was repaved, it has a very abrasive surface.  That combined with the new aerodynamic package for 2015 means that the tires could be crucial.

Entry List: Geico 500 at Talladega

Right after the Toyota Owners 400 finished up on Sunday, NASCAR unveiled the entry list for this weekend's GEICO 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.  45 teams are entered.  Wood Brothers Racing is back with Ryan Blaney, while Bobby Labonte returns to the No. 32, replacing Joey Gase.  Read more

Entry List: Winn-Dixie 300 at Talladega

Also on Sunday afternoon, NASCAR released the entry list for Saturday's Winn-Dixie 300.  Originally, 44 cars were entered.  Benny Gordon was added later as driver of the No. 17 for Vision Racing.  According to a recent post on the team's Facebook page, the team is going all out for the race with a JGR car, a leased Cup pit crew and a leased top of the line engine.  Read more

Kurt Busch won his way into the Chase for the second season in a row. Albeit, there's an asterisk lingering after his addition this year. NASCAR decided that when he returned from the great Delaware Family Court debacle it wasn't his fault for missing the races, so they wouldn't penalize him in regards to earning his way into the 2015 playoffs. While I grimaced at the thought of a potential champion having missed three of the qualifying competitions, I could see France & Co.'s position. What they did was plausible. And to top it all off, how the elder Busch has been running since his return to the series has been nothing short of stellar.

Yes, I could stomach Kurt being handed the Cup in Homestead after all is said and done. He will have battled long and hard to get there.

Now, there's another story brewing out there concerning Kyle Busch. On Thursday, France announced that NASCAR would be open to "accommodating" Kyle Busch upon his return to the series after suffering a compound fracture to his right leg and a broken left foot during the XFINITY Series season-opening Alert Today Florida 300. This statement was issued after Kyle addressed the media a week earlier stating he has no definite date when he will return. He is hoping for July at the best.

Out of a seven month regular season, NASCAR is actually thinking about allowing a competitor the opportunity to win the championship after missing at least five months of competition... ??? Did I miss something?

Before we start deciding my incredulity has something to do with a mad crush I have for the older Busch brother vs. the younger, you couldn't be farther from the truth. Neither of the native Las Vegas boys have won their way into my heart. Far from it. Year after year after year, there's usually a headline that involves the words Busch, rude, insulting, childish and NASCAR. If offered the chance to hob nob with one of them, I'd likely turn down the chance. They can drive. They can drive like there's no tomorrow. The fact the younger has yet to win a Cup is simple luck on the part of other competitors. It does not mean they are people I want to count among my acquaintances.

However, if NASCAR truly thinks that permitting Kyle the chance to snag the hardware this season is a logical conclusion to their exception policy, they've got more than a single lug nut missing. I believe the wheel is rolling down the backstretch unaccompanied. It might be getting ready to depart the premises.

There's a difference between taking a week or two off from the job and almost half a year. You've passed the Personal Time Off request line and submitted paperwork for Long-term Disability. Co-workers have filled in your shoes and done the job in your absence. If somebody is going to get the annual award for Outstanding Contribution to the Sport in the Face of Unusual Consequences, it's going to be your substitute drivers. Not you.

This isn't cruel. It's not meant to demean the abilities of the full-time personality or quash the investment of the sponsors. It's real life. 2015 has passed you by. I believe in other sports, they'd call the remainder of 2015 an opportunity for building for 2016--not a chance for taking it all anyway.

Maybe Mr. France had a few too many Long Island Ice Teas before answering questions that day. Maybe he hadn't realized that two months have already passed since Kyle's injury and he still isn't expected at the track anytime soon. And maybe NASCAR simply has no interest in maintaining the integrity of auto racing as a sport and has cut the line at the Next Great Reality network show.

If somebody wants to admit that this is where NASCAR is headed, please tell me. I'll need a moment to decide if I want to tune in anymore.

Why do we try every possible way to finish under the checkers? Because when you sit in the stands all day long, and the race is called before the cars have the chance to battle for the win, it's likely to tick you off.  Jeff won his 77th race under the yellow, snapping the Big E's personal record.  The Earnhardt fans tossed a few cases of beer onto the track to show their disappointment.

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: The 1995 Winston Select 500 is one of the fastest races run at Talladega.  Only two caution resulted in an average speed of nearly 179 mph.  As such, the race became seriously spread out.  Jeff Gordon lost the leaders when he pitted alone with 19 laps to go.  How did he get back up to Mark Martin and eventually challenge him for the win?

Monday's Answer:

Q:  When the foot stays on the floor repreatedly like it does at Talladega, strange things can happen.  The 1999 DieHard 500 saw Mike Skinner eliminated from contention in a very unusual fashion.  What happened?    

A: On lap 49, Tony Stewart attempted to make a move on Mike Skinner exiting turn 2 for second.  Skinner wasn't having any of that and forced Stewart to the apron.  Skinner kept leaning on Stewart until both drivers ended up in the wet grass.  While Stewart kept control of his Pontiac, Skinner spun across the track, triggering a multi-car crash.  The crash can be seen here.

Technically, Skinner wasn't hit despite spinning across in front of much of the field.  However, he did damage the car in the grass, then got stuck.  Chad Little and Brett Bodine were out on the spot.  Rusty Wallace and Ernie Irvan made repairs and briefly got back out before pulling in.  Gordon returned after repairs and completed 64 more laps to finish 38th.  Skinner returned and finished the race in 36th.  Stewart, who used his car control to avoid wrecking in the grass, finished fifth.

This year Five Guys Named Moe, who are organizing what would
usually be the May-August or May-July season of the Canadian
Inquisition, decided to start it early so that it could be all
finished before the Pan Am Games take over the city. So we're
now two games into the season, and I'm ready to start posting
current-events rounds from it.
 
As usual, I'll post current-events rounds every two games through
the season, concurrently with the posting of other rounds from the
previous or current season, and all the current-events rounds from
the season will be scored as a single continuing game.
 
 
These questions were written to be asked in Toronto on the dates
indicated below, and should be interpreted accordingly. If any
answers have changed due to newer news, you are still expected to

What to Watch: Monday

- Today, Goodyear is beginning a two-day tire test at Indianapolis Motor Speedway ahead of the Crown Royal 400 in late July.  With the previous tire issues at the 2.5 mile rectangle, getting the right tire combination for durability and decent racing is crucial.  Representatives from Hendrick Motorsports, Furniture Row Racing, Richard Petty Motorsports and BK Racing will be doing the on-track testing.

Massive Pit Road Fire Sends Crew Members to Hospital

Just before the halfway point of Friday night's ToyotaCare 250, a massive fire was sparked while the No. 62 of Brendan Gaughan was being refueled.  The fire burned two of Gaughan's pit crewmembers.  A third crewmember from Eric McClure's team was hospitalized after somthering one of Gaughan's crewmembers, then getting a face full of spray from a fire extinguisher.  Read more

David Ragan Ready to Move to Michael Waltrip Racing Soon

For now, David Ragan is driving the No. 18 M&M's Toyota in place of the injured Kyle Busch.  However, that could be changing soon.  Michael Waltrip will drive the No. 55 this weekend at Talladega, then Ragan could step into the Aaron's Toyota as a long-term substitute as JGR looks to give Busch's seat to Erik Jones.  Read more

Kenny Wallace to Sub for Brother Mike at Talladega for JGL Racing

On Friday, JGL Racing announced that Kenny Wallace will drive the team's No. 26 Toyota in this weekend's Winn-Dixie 300 at Talladega Superspeedway in place of his older brother Mike.  Mike Wallace had triple bypass surgery last week after experiencing chest pains.  Read more

Chasing the Chase: Harvick Continues to Increase His Advantage

Kevin Harvick is living a charmed life these days.  Last week, he had some strife for the first time all season and still managed to increase his lead.  Sunday was back to the norm.  Yet another second-place allowed him to beat out Joey Logano and increase his lead slightly.  His advantage is now 33 over Logano.  Martin Truex, Jr. earned another top 10 finish to maintain the third spot in points.  However, Truex did lose a few points to Logano.

Jimmie Johnson had a miserable time in qualifying on Sunday, puting himself 36th on the grid.  Once the green came out Sunday, Johnson went towards the front.  Despite a long stop to patch the nose at one point, Johnson came up through the field to finish third and close up on Truex.  Brad Keselowski is still in fifth, but engine problems hampered his effort.  Late cautions dropped him from the top 5 to a 17th-place finish.  Kasey Kahne quietly charged up from provisional land to finish sixth on Sunday and move up to sixth in points.

Kahne's advantage is just two points over Matt Kenseth, who had another solid run to finish seventh.  Both Kahne and Kenseth jumped over Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the points.  Earnhardt Jr. had an average day on the way to a 14th-place finish.  Jamie McMurray enters the top 10 after a great run to third, gaining three positions in the standings.  Jeff Gordon rounds out the top 10.

"Well, this Energizer Chevy was just good on the long runs. It wouldn't take off real quick, but after 30 laps it was about the same as the leaders. It reminded me kind of like the old Darlington or old Rockingham, when somebody would take off and then there would be the guy who couldn't go, that would come at the end. So, it was a lot of fun to get to be the guy that had the speed at the end. Kurt's (Busch) car just took off so much faster than ours. I'm really proud of our guys. We had a little bit of a hiccup in the pits at the beginning, and those guys did a good job of brushing that off and giving me good pit stops toward the end. And so, I'm really proud of our crew. "We were good on the short run and then after about 10 to 12 laps we started losing speed and losing the center really, losing the turn. Those guys would start driving away and then really late before a green flag pit stop everyone's tires would be burned off enough that I could start catching back up but I could never catch back up what we lost. Those late race restarts helped a lot and we were able to be aggressive and got a couple spots and came home for a top-five. Overall a top-five is nice. It looked like we were probably a seventh or eighth place car so we got a little more out of it and we will work on it for the fall." - Joey Logano, finished fifth

Q:  The 2003 Spring race weekend at Richmond was a rough and tumble affair marked by pole winner Jerry Nadeau suffering career-ending injuries in a practice crash and rain.  Early on, Ryan Newman was one of the potential contenders, but he was eliminated from a chance to win at the two-thirds' mark.  What happened?

A:  Newman's night was already miserable before this point, but he was still running reasonably well.  Shortly after a restart, Newman was hit from behind by Ward Burton entering turn 1.  That put Newman up the hill and caused a small scramble.  In that scramble, Kevin Harvick ran in the back of then-teammate Jeff Green, spinning the No. 30 into the wall.  Rusty Wallace ran in the back of Jason Keller (driving the No. 01 in place of Nadeau), spinning Keller into the wall and crowding Newman so that he had nowhere to go but directly into Green.  The crash can be seen here.
