GOLDEN OLDIES LYRICS QUIZ #335 (GOLQ335)
 
Welcome to the December edition of the quiz. This is an audio type quiz;
the first 25 clues are snippets of various songs that entered the Billboard
charts between 1955 through 1969.
 
There is a single (very) broadly based theme that weaves its way through
all 27 songs in the quiz. In fairness, I should point out that in at least
four cases the theme relationship is pretty arcane. In those cases the
song snippets should be fairly recognizable however. At least one of these
cases might qualify as a "twofer".
 
As always, some of the songs are quickly recognizable while others are a
bit more obscure, but the theme might come to the rescue.

Marlowe Claims Whitt is Off to Front Row Motorsports on Twitter, Later Recants
 
Last week, a rather bizarre controversy was created by BK Racing co-owner Anthony Marlowe when he tweeted that Cole Whitt was leaving BK Racing for Front Row Motorsports.  In the tweet, Marlowe congratulated Whitt for taking over the No. 34, currently driven by David Ragan.  No announcement of any kind had been made confirming the move.
 
Front Row Motorsports quickly put out a statement designed to nullify Marlowe's claims.
 
"There are no expected changes with the No. 34 car," Front Row Motorsports PR representative Shari Spiewak said in a statement to MRN's Dustin Long.  "The team is working on getting its 2015 plans finalized and, hopefully, should be able to have everything buttoned up in a few weeks."
 
On Wednesday, Marlowe apologized for his tweet.  However, he still believes that the move is going to happen.
 
"I did not intend for it to make national news," Marlowe wrote to NBC Sports' MotorSport Talk's Jerry Bonkowski.  "Aside from it being smart alecky, it was just a tweet congratulating a friend, and current supplier of driver services on his ride for next year.

"We could have had someone else drive the 26 car this year at BKR, but my new partners and I felt (Whitt) deserved a full season after his past NASCAR teams were not committed to him for the long term, along with his auspicious start to the 2014 season. That mission was accomplished.

"Additionally, we offered Cole (and it has been on the table since July) a multi-year option contract in the Cup series. Needless to say, I wish he would have stuck around and built this franchise with us over the years, but he obviously has and/or somehow created a better opportunity somewhere else."

Austin Dillon to Substantially Increase XFINITY Series Participation

Last Monday, shortly after we sent out the weekly Newsletter, Richard Childress Racing announced that 2013 Nationwide Series Champion Austin Dillon will greatly expand his participation in the series in 2015.  The older of the two Dillon brothers will compete in "the majority" of the races in the No. 33 Chevrolet.  Sponsorship will be provided by Rheem.

Dillon is excited about his expanded role in the XFINITY Series in 2015, and his partnership with Rheem.

"Rheem has a long tradition of reliability and quality in their industry with close to 90 years in the business," Dillon said in a press release.  "My family has a long tradition in NASCAR and we also have a tradition of reliability and performance. I enjoy racing in the XFINITY Series and will be proud to represent Rheem while contending for wins on Saturday afternoons in 2015."

Richard Childress Racing's move is in response to the testing ban for Sprint Cup teams that went into effect following the Ford EcoBoost 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November.  With track time at a premium, expect additional announcements along these lines in the future.

 

Webber Concussed in Hard Crash at Interlagos

On Sunday, the FIA World Endurance Championship held their season finale, the Six Hours of Sao Paulo, at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace (often referred to as Interlagos) near Sao Paulo, Brazil.  The event was very competitive with all three factory outfits in the P1 class (Audi, Porsche and Toyota) fighting it out for the final victory of the year.

Late in the race, Porsche was in position for the first victory for their 919 Hybrid when trouble struck.  Mark Webber, driving the No. 20 Porsche, spun and hit the outside at the Subida dos Boxes, a flat out left hander that leads to the pit straight.  The crash also collected the No. 90 GTE-Am class Ferrari F458 Italia driven by Matteo Cressoni.  Webber's car then crossed the track and hit the inside wall as well, dislodging the rear end in the process.

Webber was extricated from the 919 Hybrid, placed onto a backboard and taken to the Infield Care Center.  He was then transferred to Bandeirantes Hospital, where he was kept overnight for observation.  There, Webber was diagnosed with a concussion and some bruising.  He will travel back to Europe in the coming days.  Cressoni was checked out trackside by officials and declared ok.  Cressoni later went to the hospital as well and spent the night as well, but was released early this morning.

The news wasn't all doom and gloom for Porsche as Neel Jani drove the No. 14 Porsche 919 Hybrid to the team's first victory, clinched in part due to Webber's crash.  The incident, which occurred with 28 minutes remaining, resulted in the remainder of the race being run behind the safety car.

Q:  Last week, Extreme Speed Motorsports announced that they will compete full-time in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2015 while also competing part-time in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.  While American teams competing in the WEC is rare, it's not unprecedented.  When was the last time an American prototype team competed in the WEC?

A: It was actually quite recently.  While they were competing full-time in the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series here in the United States, Starworks Motorsport competed in the World Endurance Championship in the P2 class during the inaugural season in 2012.  Current 8Star Motorsports owner Enzo Potolicchio drove the full season, while Ryan Dalziel drove in the races except for Bahrain.  Stephane Sarrazin rounded out the driver lineup, with Tom Kimber-Smith competing in a sub role.  Also of note, 8Star Motorsports is considered to be a Venezuelan team.

They did not make it to my server. Nor have I see RQ 163. So just in case,
Chris forgot about it, I took the freedom to score the quiz which I did not
enter myself.

Mark B gets ½ on question 8 for entering Whitestead of Whitehead.
 
Dan Blum entered Lagrange for the last question. Mark pointed out that
this seems to be an answer that fits the bill. I looked up the two men in
my Swedish encyclopedia from the 1950s, and while there is a short
sentence on the motion of planets in the article on Lagrange, there is a
lot more in the article on Laplace.
 
Declining to laziness, I also checked Wikipedia, and I get the same
impression. Lagrange was also working in this field, but Laplace did
the major work. I eventually decided that Lagrange was only worth a
half point.
 
This puts Mark and Dan on the same total score. Chris had stated:
 
In case of a tie, the first tiebreaker will be whoever scored
the most points on the hardest questions (defined post-facto
as the ones which the fewest people got any points on). Second
tiebreaker will be posting order.
 
Mark was the only one to #1 correct, and he was also the first to
enter.
 
Thus, by my scoring, RQ 163 is Mark Brader's. However, let's give
Chris a day or two to make his final verdict.
