Title Contenders Participate in 'Chase Across America' Media Tour

With the Chase set to kick off with the Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway on Sept. 16, each of the 12 contenders is doing their part to help fuel excitement in the media.  As part of the "Chase Across America," drivers are making appearances on television and radio programs and making stops across the United States in an attempt to create positive publicity.

Jimmie Johnson appears to be the main headliner; he'll promote the Chase while chatting about NASCAR and his life when he makes several appearances in New York including: LIVE! with Kelly and Michael, FOX Business Network, CNN Headline News, SiriusXM Satellite Radio and FOX News with Sheppard Smith.

While the five-time champion spent time in the Big Apple, other drivers will focus on a variety of other media outlets.  Fan favorite Dale Earnhardt, Jr. spent Tuesday at ESPN headquarters while making appearances on SportsCenter and other programs before racing a golf cart against sports analyst Jay Crawford.

Meanwhile, other Chase drivers spent their time mingling with fans and visiting future race event locations.

Brad Keselowski spent time in Chicago with firefighters from Engine Company 70.  Pictures posted on Keselowski's Twitter profile show the Penske driver operating a fire hose and manning a mounted tower ladder.

Denny Hamlin met with members of the New Hampshire Army National Guard as they prepared to be deployed to Afghanistan.  The same Concord, N.H. based unit will participate in race day ceremonies prior to the Sylvania 300 on Sept. 23.

Like Hamlin, Martin Truex, Jr. also visited members of the Army National Guard, only he found himself in Kansas City.  The Michael Waltrip Racing driver spent time reflecting on 9/11 but also fielded questions regarding NASCAR.

"I really felt like this was our year and hopefully over the next 10 weeks we can go out and take advantage of the hard work we put in this winter," Truex, Jr. said. "These final 10 races are going to be a huge challenge. Any of the 12 drivers could get hot at any time. Look at Tony (Stewart) last year – he won five races and won the championship."

Kasey Kahne visited Xfinity Live! in Philadelphia for a question and answer session with fans.  The event is meant to promote the Dover International Speedway event being held during the Chase.

Students of Martinsville High School in Virginia gave Greg Biffle a huge welcome when the driver visited the city made famous by NASCAR's shortest track.

"It was a lot of fun and it was a satisfying feeling to go back and see the excitement and get to talk to the students," Biffle said.  "It was different from things we usually do and we really enjoyed it."

Clint Bowyer visited Texas Motor Speedway to help lead an assembly dedicated to the victims of 9/11.  Bowyer was the honorary starter of a relay race which was dedicated to members of Fort Worth's fire and police departments.

Matt Kenseth visited the U.S. Coast Guard Base in Miami for the opportunity to pilot a USCG Cutter Diamondback watercraft and participated in a man overboard simulation.

Following the "Chase Across America," all of the Chase drivers will meet at Chicago's House of Blues on Wednesday for the 2012 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Media Day.

Penske Teams Test at Nashville Speedway

Penske Racing's Sprint Cup Series teams were in Tennessee on Tuesday, gathering information during a full-day practice session at Nashville Speedway.

"It's a group effort to try several things," said Shell-Pennzoil Dodge crew chief Todd Gordon.  "Many of the guys on the No. 2 car team will be there and several of us from the No. 22 team are attending.  Sam will be there with us and getting seat time.  The test is really not focused on preparation for a particular upcoming race; we're just using it to take a closer look at several items we've wanted to evaluate."

Penske managed to get Brad Keselowski into the Chase during its last year as a Dodge-affiliated organization.

Whitt to Drive No. 33 at Chicagoland

Cole Whitt will drive the No. 33 LittleJoesAutos.com Chevrolet in Sunday's GEICO 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.  The 21-year-old driver will make his sixth start in the Sprint Cup Series.

Despite a lack of experience at the Sprint Cup level, Whitt has seen plenty of action in the Nationwide Series where he is the full-time driver for JR Motorsports in the No. 88 Chevrolet.

"The sport of NASCAR is constantly evolving, and as we look to make strides within our own organization we felt that we needed to add a driver to our lineup that has ties to a factory-backed organization," Circle Sport owner Joe Falk said.  "Cole Whitt is a young driver with a lot of potential - demonstrated by the fact he was hand-picked by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. - and we feel that his input will help us improve our intermediate program in the short-term.  It has always been our goal to grow Circle Sport into a competitive organization no matter the race track and the addition of Cole Whitt will help us reach that goal."

The Nationwide Series rookie is currently seventh in the standings, and has compiled three top 5s and 10 top 10s in 25 starts this season.

Today's Featured Commentary
Beth's Brief
Checking Chase Chances Part I
by Beth Lunkenheimer

The Sprint Cup Series heads into Chicagoland Speedway for the ninth Chase for the Sprint Cup, and with 12 drivers now within striking distance of the points lead, the championship battle has now been blown wide open. But who has what it takes to get the job done? While their seeding to begin the Chase doesn't guarantee a better finish at the end of the year, a good position usually ends up being a tremendous help. In fact, the eventual champion has been seeded no worse than third every year except 2004 (Kurt Busch - 7th) and 2011 (Tony Stewart - 9th). So without further ado, let's take a look at the Chase drivers and what we can expect from each one as the 2012 season begins to wind down.

1st - Denny Hamlin
4 Wins, 11 Top 5s, 13 Top 10s

Denny Hamlin comes into the Chase with all sorts of momentum. Having scored back-to-back wins at Bristol and Atlanta, the driver of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota led 202 laps at Richmond and likely would have scored a solid top-5 finish if not for his fuel mileage. But despite an 18th-place finish, Hamlin is still set for a solid run at the championship. Everyone remembers 2010 when he came so close to grabbing the championship only to have it fall from his grip at Homestead, and it's hard to think he won't suffer another meltdown if he finds himself in the same position late in this Chase. However, Hamlin insists there were a different set of circumstances that led to his collapse and that he knows how to handle the pressure better this year. Of course, it helps that Hamlin has last year's champion crew chief atop his pit box making the calls. In the end, everything combined might just be enough for Hamlin to snag his first career championship.

2nd - Jimmie Johnson (-3 points)
3 Wins, 12 Top 5s, 17 Top 10s

Jimmie Johnson enters the Chase not only as a five-time champion, but also as the only driver to have made NASCAR's playoffs for all nine seasons it has been around. Is there really all that much to say about the Johnson / Knaus combination? It's hard to argue with the pairing that has won five of eight championships under the Chase format. And while there are still 11 other drivers that would love nothing more than to continue what Tony Stewart started last year when he prevented a sixth consecutive championship, Johnson has found himself near the top of the standings for much of the season and has likely had a chance to try out a few things that will help give him an edge when the Chase begins.

3rd - Tony Stewart (-3 points)
3 Wins, 10 Top 5s, 12 Top 10s

Tony Stewart enters as the only driver to have won at all ten Chase tracks; he has a combined 21 victories at those venues. He started off the year strong, answering Denny Hamlin's first victory with Darian Grubb in Phoenix with a win of his own the following week at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Though the driver of the No. 14 Chevrolet stumbled and nearly forced himself into using a Wild Card to make the Chase, he rebounded at Richmond with a solid fourth-place finish. While it's unlikely that he'll run off a string of five wins again this year, don't count him out as a championship contender. Remember that he's losing Office Depot as a primary sponsor, and the owner / driver would love nothing more than to show another potential backer that their money would be well represented.

4th - Brad Keselowski (-3 points)
3 Wins, 10 Top 5s, 15 Top 10s

Can you even consider Brad Keselowski as a dark horse pick for the championship anymore? With the numbers he's put up in the last few years, it's almost hard to even call him that, but one thing is for sure: he's scored the most points of anyone in the last ten races. Despite having instability in the No. 22 team, the driver of the No. 2 Dodge has definitely not skipped a beat and looks to challenge for the championship this year. Regardless of whether he manages to grab the big trophy at Homestead in November, one thing is for sure: Keselowski is an integral part of Penske Racing and as such, his team will be given all they need to make a run; however, it might not quite be time for the No. 2 team just yet.

5th - Greg Biffle (-6 points)
2 Wins, 10 Top 5s, 15 Top 10s

Having sat atop the points standings for 14 of the 26 weeks in the "regular" season, Greg Biffle knows what it's like to hold that lead, but perhaps what's more impressive is that the driver of the No. 16 Ford has just four finishes outside the top 15 in the first 26 races. Though he's seeded fifth thanks to two victories, the Roush Fenway Racing driver would love nothing more than to bring the organization its first championship since Kurt Busch won it all in 2004. And if Biffle can continue with the performance he's put up for much of the year and throw in a win or two when it means the most, there's a very real chance he could come out on top for the first time in his career.

6th - Clint Bowyer (-6 points)
2 Wins, 6 Top 5s, 15 Top 10s

With the pressure of being in the Chase off of his shoulders, Clint Bowyer was allowed the chance to gamble on fuel at Richmond Friday night and won. And despite being overshadowed by Jeff Gordon narrowly making the Chase, the driver of the No. 15 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota is one to keep an eye on. He's quietly been around for much of the season after starting off a little rocky, finishing in the top 10 just twice in the first eight races. With six top-10 finishes in his last eight races, Bowyer looks to have another shot at the championship after suffering a 150-point blow from a penalty in the 2010 Chase that took him out of contention following a failed postrace inspection in Loudon, and he'll be out to prove that MWR can compete with the bigger teams.

@bobpockrass: Cindric said they will evaluate whether Todd Gordon remains as crew chief ... could go either way. #nascar

@bobpockrass: Cindric also said they considered other drivers, their driving ability and obviously sensitive to someone w/good character after issues w/22

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q: Jimmie Johnson, driving for Herzog Motorsports, claimed his one and only victory in the now-Nationwide Series at Chicagoland Speedway in 2001, outfoxing Ryan Newman. However, he got some help. What helped Johnson get the lead away from Newman?

Check back Thursday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Tuesday's Answer:

Q:
In the 2002 Tropicana Twister 300 at Chicagoland Speedway, Scott Riggs started from the outside pole and led 50 laps. However, his day ended in the garage a little past halfway. What happened?

A:
Riggs was running in the sixth position on Lap 124 when something appeared to break on the rear of his Nestea Ford. The car then shot hard into the outside wall exiting Turn 2 and rode the wall all the way to Turn 4. The crash can be seen at the 1:19:25 mark of the race. Riggs was able to exit the car on his own, but he was in visible pain, favoring his right side.

Paul Menard's Team Loses Appeal On Penalty

One of Richard Childress Racing's teams stays a little lighter staffed this Tuesday Tuesday after their appeal of a midsummer penalty was denied by the National Stock Car Racing Commission. The three-member panel upheld the consequences handed down August 21st, at the NASCAR Research and Development Center following a race at Michigan International Speedway. RCR lost 25 owner points, Menard 25 driver points, and crew chief Slugger Labbe was fined $100,000 as a result of the infractions, which violated Section 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and 14-K: If, in the judgment of NASCAR Officials, race equipment that has been previously certified or previously approved by NASCAR for use in an event, pursuant to sub-section 8-12, has been altered, modified, repaired or changed in any matter (that is deemed illegal).

The matter was deemed serious enough to also suspend Labbe for six weeks along with car chief Craig Smokstad and crew member Grant Hutchens. All those men are on probation until December 31st. RCR acknowledged the failure of post-race inspection but did argue the suspensions of Smokstad and Hutchens; however, the panel found any argument to reduce suspensions of specific crew members unconvincing.

Menard missed the Chase and remains without a top-3 finish since winning last year's Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis.

RPM Switches Crew Chiefs

One team that missed the Chase is getting their start on 2013 a little early. Richard Petty Motorsports made a crew chief swap Monday, assigning Todd Parrott to the No. 43 Ford of Aric Almirola while Mike Ford goes over to work with Marcos Ambrose on the No. 9. The decision was made following a disappointing Richmond race in which Ambrose was officially locked out of the Chase after failing to win for the second time in 2012.

"We're continuing to make improvements at Richard Petty Motorsports and we've added talented people to our organization this season," said Sammy Johns, Director of Competition in announcing the changes. "This move is to make sure that we are using that talent to the fullest to get the best results for our teams each weekend. We feel this adjustment will strengthen the organization, allow us to continue to compete for wins and ultimately challenge for championships."

Several crew members that worked with Parrott and Ford will also go ahead and switch teams in time for Sunday's race at Chicagoland. RPM, which does not have a manufacturer lined up for 2013 is looking to up their performance with their drivers 15th and 22nd in Cup points. While Ambrose, who was in Chase contention has won a race within the last month (Watkins Glen) Almirola is without a top-5 finish this season and hasn't finished inside the top 15 since Dover in June.

- Jeff Gordon is going retro this weekend at Chicagoland ... with his facial hair. Gordon plans to grow back the infamous mustache during the Chase he had during the early years of his Cup career in the 1990s. He's hoping it'll change his roller coaster luck as the No. 24 team looks to win their fifth championship - and first since 2001.

- Ron Hornaday, Jr. has picked up a primary sponsor for multiple Truck Series races. Smokey Mountain Snuff, a tobacco-free smokeless brand is scheduled to be on the car for three races between now and the end of the 2012 season.

A Refresher Course for the Race to the Chase
Sitting In The Stands: A Fan's View
by S.D. Grady

It's time for the Chase!  Aren't you thrilled?  Oh.  Well, actually neither am I.  The fact is the haze of summer has given way to September blue skies and the children have returned to class.  Life takes on a calmer pace and I look forward to quiet afternoons devoid of screaming children and angry parents.

But then arrives the Chase, NASCAR's version of the playoff's and the ensuing ten week marathon driving toward the awards ceremonies in Las Vegas.  We get hype, new commercials, excessive extra TV content, special Chase issues from your favorite racing sites; its sort of like Christmas without trees and lights.  All the excitement makes you wonder if there was something you missed during the regular season that necessitates this avalanche of a media blitz.  Was there?

Actually, no.  It's not so much that we missed the big stories as much as they've sort of settled into distant memory.  So, here's a refresher of the big storylines for each race, and some little ones.

Daytona 500:  NASCAR discovers Twitter and Tide gets free adspace.  It all came about from Montoya's random right turn into the jet dryer, resulting in the infamous explosion.  Kenseth wins during prime time on a Monday night.

Phoenix:  The No. 11 team verifies the genius in snapping up the Sprint Cup Champion Crew Chief from 2011 with a win, and we all got a gander at the new racing surface.

Las Vegas:  Tony Stewart's No. 14 takes an eon to refire, leading to a chorus of "I told you the EFI was a problem!" from the Media Center, and proceeded to take his new crew chief Steve Addington to Victory Lane.  Take that, Darian Grubb!

Bristol:  Matt Kenseth appeared at the front of the radar for the fourth race in a row, without making much noise.  But it was @keselowski who stole the trophy.

Fontana:  Uh...well, the final appeal for those funky "C" pillars on the No. 48 was heard and penalties reduced to the laughable limit.  Other than that, Stewart notched another one for his victory belt.

Martinsville:
Short track racing at its best.  Newman and the 'Dinger took this one down to the last foot before the trophy was handed to the No. 39 team.  And right about now we began to wonder who upstairs Jeff Gordon ticked off this season.

Texas:  Those cookie cutter tracks are really awesome!  At least Greg Biffle thought so since he got a pair of new six-shooters.  Otherwise, the now infamous No. 48 "C" pillar car was sent to the show car circuit, never to be seen again on a plate track.

Kansas:  Somebody named Hamlin won for the second time this season, setting up what the season would look like well into the summer.  Otherwise, this is Kansas.  What did you expect?

Richmond:  While Kyle Busch took his bow, Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart still couldn't figure out where they were supposed to have lined up for the fourth restart.  Between that and some random water bottles creating driving hazards, it was a rather mild evening.  In fact, nine races into the season fans were wondering whether NASCAR excitement would ever return...

Talladega:  All year FOX had been trotting out a lovely Hendrick Motorsports 100th Win Any Minute Now piece...and were once again disappointed when Brad Keselowski grabbed his second victory of the season.  Otherwise, the much touted pack racing really devolved into more tandem racing.  Seems like no matter how hard you try, there ain't no fixing plate racing.

Darlington:  Oh wait!  It happened!  100 Cup wins for HMS.  Mr. Five-time did the job himself.  And just because we really thought Kurt Busch was "just having fun" in his No. 51 ride this year, it stunned the stands when he played bumper cars in the pits with Newman post-race.

Coke 600:  Kasey Kahne added to the Hendrick trophy case in a rather sedate version of this race.

Dover:  Jimmie Johnson sported a circus afro in Victory Lane and Kurt Busch added another chapter to his embarrassingly long list of "I'm an idiot days" when he threatened a member of the media--resulting in a one-race suspension.

Pocono:
Something bizarre happened, the season perked up.  In a classic confrontation, young gun Joey Logano moved veteran Mark Martin out of the way to snare the win at a competitive and exciting 400 mile Pocono event.  Most everybody agreed, this was a fun race to watch.  And yes, Jeff Gordon's year was officially sucking.

Michigan:  Didn't you hear the angels singing?  Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won.  In the Dark Knight car.  Nevermind the new track surface that resulted in scary fast speeds, the tire change and a deluge right before the green flag, NASCAR Nation celebrated their chosen son's win.

Sonoma:  It was rather quiet and little unexciting, but somehow in the end Clint Bowyer won fair and square.   Also, TV viewers were wondering whatever happened to the sterling Summer Six Pack broadcasts TNT used to put on.

Kentucky:  There wasn't any major traffic snafu.  BK benefited from pit strategy to win race No. 3 and the usual pack of suspects tried to make an otherwise snoozefest something to watch.  And rumors started to circulate about Matt Kenseth heading to the No. 20 for 2013, despite lots of denials on all parts.

Daytona:
The Dinger was suspended for failing a drug test, and a bizarre sequence of events eventually had him losing the No. 22 ride and entering into the Road to Recovery program.  NASCAR Nation still awaits the next installment in this sad saga.  Meanwhile, Stewart beat out Kahne, Kenseth and Biffle at the latest dance.

New Hampshire:
Kasey Kahne won.  Denny Hamlin suffered a miscommunication in the pits.  That was about it.

Indy:  In which many things happened in other series for the first time at the storied track, but really not much at all when we were watching the Cup race.  Jimmie Johnon won again in his typical manner--the one where its just his race.  All his.  All the time.

Pocono:  Jeff Gordon finally brought his winless streak to an end, thanks to rain.  At the same time, several fans were struck by lightning and Brian Zimmerman died during the severe thunderstorm that ended the race.  So now all the tracks reviewed their severe weather procedures.  Never take Mother Nature for granted.

Watkins Glen:
Its a road course!  We never have great races at road courses.  Wrong!  Brad Keselowski was a grinning fool during his second-place media appearance, because the beatin' and bangin' between him and Ambrose on the final lap was epic.  I believe I was jumping up and down, maybe yelling at that time.  Epic, I say.

Michigan:  Jimmie Johnson ruled the day, but Greg Biffle won.  Mark Martin's meeting with pit wall, and the splicing of his car in two, resulted in further safety revisions for those on pit road during races and revisiting the design of openings in the wall.

Bristol:  It was Bristol baby!  Not the Old Bristol, but more like a smaller Darlington.  Drivers rode the rim, beat on their neighbors, threw a helmet and generally a great time was had by all.  Oh, and don't forget Denny Hamlin's Wobble during intros.  He may have danced a bit more in Victory Lane.

Atlanta:  Hamlin won.  And yes, it seems like the names of Kenseth, Stewart, Hamlin and Johnson are the ones we can't stop talking about, as they have remained at the front of the field all year long.  But don't forget Biffle and Keselowski.  Its getting interesting folks.

Richmond:  Yes, Clint Bowyer finished off the regular season with a statement issued while hoisting the trophy.  But from the rear of the field a certain Jeff Gordon drove like a madman to edge out Kyle Busch for the last coveted Wild Card spot into the Chase.

And here we are, heading off to Chicago where the 12 Chasers will have at it.  Who will be the big winner?  Well, nothing's ever certain but it's a good shot that those names who appeared in Victory Lane more than twice over the season will be on the short list when we're pulling into Homestead.

My personal pick?  My head says Mr. Johnson is gonna do it again--Chad's been up to some pretty sneaky stuff of late.  But my heart is cheering for Brad Keselowski, that Tweeting fiend and all his polarizing opinions.

What's your pick to win the Chase of 2012?  I'm looking forward to hearing from you and watching every last race to find out.

Numbers Game: Federated Auto Parts 400
by Garrett Horton

0
The number of times Kyle Busch has finished higher than eighth in the standings during his tenure with Joe Gibbs.  In fact, with 13th the highest he can possibly finish in this year's final points standings, he will have finished outside the top-10 in points more than he has finished inside in his five seasons with Gibbs.

1
When Tony Stewart won the championship last year, it marked the one and only time that a winless driver going into the Chase managed to win the Cup title.

2
The number of times the number one seed in the Chase went on to win the championship (Tony Stewart in 2005 and Jimmie Johnson in 2007).

3
The number two seed historically has had the most success in the Chase, going on to win a total of three times, all by Jimmie Johnson (2006, 2009, 2010).

4
With Denny Hamlin going into this year's Chase as the number one seed, it marked the fourth time in the last five years a Joe Gibbs Racing driver has been at the top of the standings going into the final ten races.

5
Of Clint Bowyer's seven career victories, five of them have come from a starting position of fourth or better.

7
Bowyer's seventh victory moved him into a six-way tie for 62nd most all-time.

8

With his fifth-place finish at Richmond, Matt Kenseth scored his first top-5 since Daytona eight races ago.

9.7
Greg Biffle, who has scored the most points this year, has an average finish of 9.7 through 26 races in 2012, easily on track to eclipse his previous best of 11.9 in 2005.

10
Tony Stewart picked up his tenth top-5 of the season on Saturday, already more than his total in 2010 and his championship winning campaign last year.

12
Most consecutive top-10's going into the Chase by any eventual champion since NASCAR implemented it's version of the playoffs in 2004.  This was accomplished by Tony Stewart in 2005; however, no other Chase winner has posted more than two consecutive top-10's going into the final ten races, so momentum doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot.

16

Tony Stewart ranks only 16th highest in points scored over the last ten races, fewer than any other Chaser.

17
Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has 17 top-10 finishes in 2012.  He needs only five in the last ten races to break his personal best of 21 set in 2003 and 2004.

39
Despite Jeff Gordon's amazing mid-season turnaround, going from 22nd in points after the first race at Pocono in June to qualifying for the second wild card spot 12 races later, he has led only 39 laps in that span.

377
Denny Hamlin has led 377 laps in the last three races, more than double the amount of the driver with the most in that span (teammate Joey Logano with 139).

1992
This year's class of Chasers include two drivers who have never finished in top-5 in points – Kasey Kahne, who is in his ninth full season and Martin Truex, Jr., currently in his seventh full season.  The last time a driver won the championship who had never ended the year in the top-5 in points with at least six years of full-time Cup experience was Alan Kulwicki in 1992.

Q:  This weekend's MavTV American Real 500 at Auto Club Speedway is the first open-wheeled 500 mile race outside of Indianapolis since 2002.  What was the most notable fact about that race?

A:  The 2002 event featured a mere 18 starters, which was sadly par for the course in late-2002 with Penske having already defected to the IRL and many of the other teams following after the 2002 season ended.  However, what is also notable is that this is the fastest race in CART history.  The event was run at an average speed of nearly 198 mph, thanks to a low amount of cautions.  However, this meant that only nine of the 18 starters managed to finish the 500 mile distance due to attrition.

Sprint Cup Race Recap: Bowyer Wins on Fuel Mileage; Gordon Claims Final Chase Berth
by Jeff Wolfe

The saying goes that a little rain never hurt anybody.

But a few drops at around 12:30 a.m. Sunday in Richmond, Va.,  just may have saved Jeff Gordon's season.

Gordon made an unlikely comeback to finish second in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond International Raceway Saturday night/Sunday morning to become the final qualifier for NASCAR's Chase for the Championship.  The race was the last regular-season date on the schedule.  The final ten races make up the sport's version of the playoffs, the first of which is Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway.

Gordon, who earlier Saturday night had bemoaned his ill-handling car during a 51-minute rain delay as he sat one lap down and well out of the Chase at that time, edged Kyle Busch for the 12th and final Chase spot by three points.  Clint Bowyer, who was in obvious fuel-saving mode for the final 50 laps of the 400-lap race on the three-quarter mile D-shaped oval, earned the win, finishing just over two seconds ahead of Gordon in a race that ended about 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning due to about two-and-a-half hours of rain delays, including about a 90-minute delay prior to the start of the race in front of a crowd of 89,000.

And while Bowyer celebrated in Victory Lane for the second time this season after a fuel-saving run, Gordon, a four-time Sprint Cup champion, was elated to have his season saved by the final caution of the night for rain on lap 275.

"I went from last week being the most disappointed I've ever been to finish second to the most excited I've ever been to finish second," said Gordon, who has one victory this year, in the rain-shortened race at Pocono in August.  "Wow, what a race for us.   We just flat out missed the setup at the beginning.  I felt like I won the race tonight.  When that was over, [and] they told me I was in the Chase, we made it, I mean, I was ecstatic.  I was going nuts."

Gordon admitted he was going a little nuts for another reason when the red flag waved to stop cars due to rain on lap 152.  After starting second and leading the first two green flag laps of the race, he faded quickly and eventually found himself a lap down, fighting poor handling on the No. 24 car as crew chief Alan Gustafson tried to figure out how to make the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet faster.

"I was not very smiling and happy at that rain delay, the one red flag," said Gordon, who joined Hendrick teammates Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Kasey Kahne in the Chase.  "I was pretty ticked off that we got that far behind.  For me as a racecar driver, when you have that kind of start to the race, you don't have a lot of hope you're going to get it turned around.  I went to Alan.  He never wavered.  He was confident. "

After comparing Gordon's car to each of his three teammates, Gustafson decided do away with the rear sway bar under the rear of the car.

"The biggest thing is that rear bar, we just had to get rid of it," Gordon said. "We did that.  We cut the chain.  Our car really started coming to us right then.  We finally got some drive-off (the corners)."

While that allowed Gordon to gain some handling and much needed speed, he was still the first car one-lap down and in 13th-place.  So, without a yellow flag, Gordon had no way to make up that much ground on leader Denny Hamlin, who dominated the first 275 laps by leading 202 of them.

That's when a few raindrops started to fall and the sixth and final caution came out on lap 275.  And with rain throughout the area and the race well past it's halfway point, it left drivers and crew chiefs with a difficult decision.  If they decided to pit, it was possible that rain could end the race and cost them good finishes.  If they stayed out, they would be left on older tires and more or less sitting ducks for those who pitted and took fresh tires.

Gordon, of course, had nothing to lose, being a lap down.  He, along with Bowyer, Mark Martin, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman and Matt Kenseth, were among those to pit when the yellow first waved.  Then, once it became apparent the race would return to green-flag racing without a red flag, Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. each hit pit road, but had to restart back in the field, which put Hamlin in 15th-place.

Not pitting at all during the yellow was Busch, who apparently told crew chief Dave Rogers on the radio that he wanted to come in for tires.  That left Busch, who didn't have a great car to begin with, losing valuable places and points to Gordon.

"We missed it, plain and simple," said Busch, who received some quick words from team owner Joe Gibbs before climbing out of the car when the race was over.  "He told me to handle it the right way.  There's no right way to handle the situation."

With the brief shower giving Gordon new life, he worked his way through the field to put himself in the Chase picture as Busch struggled to stay in the top-20.  But with one more pit stop to go, Gordon's job wasn't done yet.

Busch pitted for fresh tires with 66 laps to go, but was hurt a bit when his right rear tire had a loose lug nut, extending the stop by a couple of seconds.

Gordon pitted with 42 laps to go, and when he returned to the track, he had work to do again.  He passed several cars coming up through the field, and with ten laps to go, put himself in Chase position when he passed Mark Martin to reach second-place. That, combined with Busch's 16th-place finish, and Gordon's bonus point for leading at least one lap, allowed Gordon to make up the 13 points he needed at the race's beginning.

And now, the Chase is a new beginning for Gordon.

"To me, after you have that kind of effort, fall back, then come up there and finish second, almost win the race … I don't see any reason why we can't go over these next ten races and be a real threat for the championship," Gordon said.  "I don't care where we are going to start in the points.  We are in it."

Bowyer feels his team will be a threat for the championship, too.

"To win a championship, it would be pretty big," Bowyer said.  "Jimmie seems like he has a blast doing it.  I promise you I could throw a better party than him.  I might not survive it, but we would have a lot of fun."

Bowyer's two wins give him six bonus points in the standings. With the standings reset for the top-12, Hamlin will start on top with four wins, while Stewart, Johnson and Brad Keselowski will be tied for second, with Greg Biffle and Bowyer tied for fifth, then Matt Kenseth and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. tied for seventh each with one win.  Finally, Martin Truex, Jr., Kevin Harvick, Kahne and Gordon are tied for ninth.  Kahne, with his two wins, and Gordon with his one win, do not get bonus points as they were the wild-card qualifiers.

Followng Bowyer, Gordon and Martin in the top-10 Saturday night were Stewart in fourth, Kenseth, Jeff Burton, Keselowski, Ryan Newman, Biffle and Harvick.

Next weekend, the Sprint Cup Series travels to Chicagoland Speedway for the GEICO 400, race No. 1 in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.  Coverage is scheduled to start at 1:00pm EDT (Noon CDT) on ESPN, with race coverage following at 2:00pm EDT.

Chasing the Chase: Top-10 Clinch Chase Spots, But Final Wild Card Up for Grabs
by Jeff Wolfe

Greg Biffle finished the NASCAR Sprint Cup regular season as the points leader, but now that the points are reset, he's not in the lead anymore.  That's because the top-10 in points after the 26th race are reset for the Chase for the Sprint Cup based on wins.  Each of the top-10 drivers get three bonus points for each of their regular season victories.  So, heading into the 10-race Chase which starts Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway, Denny Hamlin's four wins will put him in the lead with 2012 points.

Following him are the three-win drivers with 2009 points.  They are defending champion Tony Stewart, five-time champion Jimmie Johnson and Brad Keselowski.  Next at 2006 are two-time winners Biffle and Clint Bowyer, and then at 2003 are Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Matt Kenseth then at 2000 are Martin Truex Jr. and Kevin Harvick, who finished in the top-10 without a win, and wild-card qualifiers Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon, whose wins do not count when the points are reset.

While Gordon made a dramatic run to edge Kyle Busch by three points and make the Chase, the only other driver who needed to win to make the Chase and actually led was Ryan Newman.  He took the lead from team owner and teammate Stewart on lap 300 Saturday night and led for 13 laps, but was overtaken by the eventual winner Bowyer.

It looked like Hamlin was going to get three more bonus points to start the Chase. He led 202 of the first 275 laps, before that final caution for rain caused crew chiefs and drivers plenty of headaches when deciding whether to stay out or pit.

But Hamlin took solace in the fact that he is not only leading the points, but that his car has been so strong lately.  He was bidding to win his third straight race, trying to become the first driver to do so since Johnson won four in a row in 2007.

"Our cars are lightning fast and we've just got a good thing going," Hamlin said.

Other drivers who needed to win Saturday night to make the Chase, but were never a factor were last year's runner-up Carl Edwards, Marcos Ambrose, Joey Logano and Paul Menard.

The other mini-drama surrounding Saturday's race was whether Stewart would remain in the top 10 and be able to keep his bonus points for his three victories.  After starting 28th and struggling early in the race, he started to move up and was sixth when the final caution came out.  He pitted early under the yellow and the fresh tires helped him to the lead where he led 15 laps.  Coming into the race, that tenth spot had been threatened by Kahne, but he finished 12th, leaving him 26 points behind Stewart.

Stewart won last year's title by taking five of the final ten races. He entered last year's Chase without a win. So, he, more than anybody, knows anything is possible beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday at Chicagoland on ESPN.

"I obviously couldn't predict it last year," said Stewart, a three-time champion.  "I wasn't good enough to predict it then.  I'm not sure I'm going to be any better at predicting it now.  It just showed all 12 of them are capable of doing it now.  You look at the run that Jeff had tonight, raced his way in.  That's the kind of drive you have to have to win a championship.  All 12 guys have a shot, and a good shot I think."

Final Regular Season Standings:  1)
Greg Biffle 914, 2) Dale Earnhardt, Jr. -12, 3) Matt Kenseth -17, 4) Jimmie Johnson -34, 5) Brad Keselowski -46, 6) Martin Truex, Jr. -52, 7) Clint Bowyer -56, 8) Denny Hamlin -64, 9) Kevin Harvick -73, 10) Tony Stewart -104.

Tracking The Top 35: The Gap Increases Just A Little More

The gap between the 35th and 36th place cars grew by seven more points after Saturday night's race at Richmond, putting the gap between 35th and 36th-place at 124 points.  The top-35 in points are guaranteed a starting spot in each week's race, and as has been the case since the first two months of the season, the margin remains a wide one.

The No. 36 car driven by Dave Blaney finished 33rd, and that allowed the car owned by Tommy Baldwin Racing to gain seven points on the 36th spot. The No. 21 Ford driven by Trevor Bayne, which entered the race in 36th, did not compete.  This allowed the No. 33 driven by Stephen Leicht for Circle Point, LLC, to reclaim the spot.  Leicht finished 36th, nine laps down on Saturday night.

Secret Star of the Week: The Race You Never Saw

For BK Racing, the 2012 season was always going to be a bit of a "death trial," if you will.  The team didn't even open up shop until January.  Yes, they had pretty good equipment left over from the Red Bull Racing Team (including the car that Kasey Kahne used to win in Phoenix last November), but they had a lot of inexperience and a lack of preparation.

This past weekend, Landon Cassill kept up his decent qualifying runs by turning in the 12th-fastest time in qualifying.  However, once the race started, Cassill dropped like a rock down into the 30's.  He was eventually able to recover with the help of pit strategy to finish 19th, one lap down.  BK Racing continues to show improvement, but they need to be able to put together a full race.  That's when you'll start to see even better things from the small organization.  - Phil Allaway

STAT OF THE WEEK: 123. This represents the number of laps that Clint Bowyer went on his final tank of fuel in order to claim the victory.  The stop occurred during the final caution, meaning that only the first couple of laps were at a reduced pace.  The pit window was generally considered to be 90-100 laps. - Phil Allaway

Quotes to Remember: Federated Auto Parts 400

"Man, I tell you the last couple of times we've walked in -- Sonoma I ran out of gas doing a burnout too. Thank you to these fans. This is a late night they stuck it out with us, went through the weather with all of us. Unbelievable.  To win this last race before this Chase got off -- we had a bad race last weekend. Had a lot of adversity we had to bounce through. Just kind of bummed out as a team as a whole coming into this race. This is a good way to get things bounced back headed into this Chase. You can't ask for a better race team. MWR (Michael Waltrip Racing), my teammates, everybody that is a part of this -- it's just unbelievable." - Clint Bowyer, winner

"It's just disappointing.  I really don't know what to say. We really gave it all we had out there with our Quicken Loans Chevrolet. Unfortunately, it just wasn't our year to make the Chase. Now we have to go out there and do what we have to do to be the best of the rest these next 10 races." - Ryan Newman, finished eighth.

"To start from 28th and have to work our way up, it makes for a long night.  Really proud of Steve Addington (crew chief) and all of our guys at Stewart-Haas Racing. That is what you have to do to win a championship. After last year, you can't count anybody out. All 12 guys have a good shot right now." - Tony Stewart, finished fourth

"As soon as we got started there after the rain we were a little bit free and then we just way tightened up and couldn't do what we needed to do. Just didn't have the long-run speed that we did early on. It's unfortunate. We keep coming close to getting a top 10 but 11th and 12th doesn't get it for us right now. I'm real happy with the job that the guys did. Obviously we want to be better but didn't have quite enough today." - Sam Hornish, Jr., finished 11th.

"We missed. That's it. Plain and simple.  Handle it the right way. There's no right way to handle this situation [When asked about what he was told before he got out of the race car]." - Kyle Busch, finished 16th

Q:
This weekend's MavTV American Real 500 at Auto Club Speedway is the first open-wheeled 500 mile race outside of Indianapolis since 2002.  What was the most notable fact about that race?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Friday's Answer:

Q: Later on in the 1998 Autolite Platnium 250, there was yet another big wreck. What happened here?

A: This crash started off of Turn 4, and it was the same driver getting spun as the first big crash.  Brad Noffsinger was spun out exiting Turn 4 by David Green in front of a large pack of cars.  From there, it was on.  A dozen cars were swept into the wreck.  The crash can be seen at the 10:40 mark of this clip.

In this crash, Noffsinger and both Grubb brothers (Wayne and Kevin) were out on the spot.  Robert Pressley, after getting caught up in both big wrecks, briefly returned to the race before pulling out.  Randy LaJoie and Phil Parsons continued after time behind the wall.  The others all sought repairs on pit road before continuing._

Chase Clinch Scenarios

With nine drivers already locked into the Chase, there are still three spots left to fill. But just who has a shot to race their way into those final openings in the last race before the Chase field is set?

Tony Stewart: He's already guaranteed at least a wild-card spot with his three wins. But he can stay in the top 10 by finishing 14th, 15th with one lap led or 16th with the most laps led.

Kasey Kahne: He is the only driver outside the top 10 with two wins. He is basically in. The only iffy scenario for him is if Kyle Busch knocks Stewart out of the top 10 and Jeff Gordon wins. If that happens Kahne then must finish 13th or better, or 14th with one lap led or 15th with the most laps led.

There are five other drivers besides Kahne outside the top 10 with at least one win. So, if Busch, Gordon, Ryan Newman, Marcos Ambrose or Joey Logano win, they are in by virtue of joining Kahne with two wins.

Here's how they can get in without a win:

Busch: He's also in if he loses 12 or fewers points to Gordon and loses 40 or fewer points to Ambrose.

Gordon: He has to finish 13 points ahead of Busch and not lose more than 28 points to Ambrose and 37 points to Newman.

Newman and Logano:  They can only clinch with a win. However if either Busch or Gordon knock Stewart out of the top 10, both will be eliminated.

Ambrose: He needs to finish 41 points ahead of Busch and 29 ahead of Gordon.

There are two winless drivers with a very slim chance to make it.

Carl Edwards needs to win (and score 47 points) and have Busch finish 24th or worse and Gordon finish 12th or worse, each with no laps led.  Also, if Busch or Gordon knock Stewart out of the top 10, Edwards is eliminated.

Paul Menard needs to win (and also score 47 points) and have Busch finish 34th or worse and Gordon finish 22nd or worse, each with no laps led. Also, if Gordon or Busch knock Stewart out of the top 10 Menard will be eliminated.

The first race in the Chase is at 2 PM Sunday, September 16, at Chicagoland Speedway on ESPN.

Richard Petty, Ambrose, Hamlin to Highlight Charlotte Pit Party

Richard Petty has long had a love affair with NASCAR fans, and the Hall of Famer will continue that with an infield Pit Party at the Bank of America 500 at Charlotte Motor Speedway Oct. 13. The King will also be joined by four-time 2012 winner Denny Hamlin as well as one of Petty's own drivers, Marcos Ambrose.

The party will take place in the Nationwide Series garage from 2 to 5 PM before the lone Saturday night event in the 10-race Chase for the Championship, NASCAR's version of the playoffs. Fans who buy race tickets and pre-race pit passes will be allowed in to the party, which will also feature other driver appearances

"Pre-race pit passes give fans a unique, behind-the-scenes look at race day preparations that you just can't get at other sporting events," said Marcus Smith, president and general manager at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "We wanted to give our fans even more access to an area that's usually off limits. The Pit Party is also going to provide plenty of fun before the Bank of America 500 and yet another reason to get to Charlotte Motor Speedway early on race day."

The party will also feature displays from the Richard Petty Driving Experience and a tire-changing station where fans can try out their pit crew skills. Also scheduled to appear are SPEED TV personalities Jimmy Spencer and Danielle Trotta.

Pit passes are $100 for adults, $50 for children ages 14-18 and free for children 13 and under.

Rusty Wallace to Be Honored at Iowa "Fan Appreciation" Weekend

When the Camping World Truck Series heads to Iowa Speedway next weekend, the track will host a special fan tribute leading up to their final race of the 2012 season. Those who attend will be able to meet and chat with Rusty Wallace, who will also participate in pre-race ceremonies. Majority track owners Conrad and Stan Clement will be joined by four fans to present Wallace with an Iowa Speedway "Tribute Plaque" to commemorate his Hall of Fame induction.

"We are so proud of Rusty Wallace's accomplishments throughout his incredibly successful NASCAR career," Iowa Speedway president Stan Clement said. "Those accomplishments, and his untiring support of NASCAR racing over the years, are among the many reasons he is the youngest member to be elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame. We are looking forward to honoring him at our NASCAR Truck race, along with thousands of his fans, before he is formally inducted in Charlotte."

Wallace will also pilot one of the pace trucks for the initial start of the American Ethanol 200 presented by Hy-Vee.

"I'm honored and humbled by the outpouring of support for my induction in the NASCAR Hall of Fam, particularly from Iowa Speedway fans who have been so supportive over the years," Wallace said. "This NASCAR Truck race weekend is really about the fans, and I'm raelly pleased that my schedule allows me to come to Iowa and meet many of them personally."

In 706 career starts, the 1989 Cup Series champion has 55 victories, 202 top 5s and 349 top-10 finishes.

Lowe's to Donate $133,000 to Red Cross

As mentioned briefly earlier this week in our Newsletter, Lowe's announced that it will donate $133,966 to the American Red Cross to assist with the relief efforts following Hurricane Isaac's impact on the south. The home improvement store matched Jimmie Johnson's earnings at Atlanta Motor Speedway as part of its Racing for Relief program. Additionally, Hendrick Motorsports and Johnson will donate $48,000.

"Lowe's heartfelt thoughts go out to those impacted by this disaster, many of whom are a part of our Lowe's family, Lowe's director of community relations Joan Higginbotham said. "By partnering with organizations like the American Red Cross, we're able to ensure that immediate support and supplies continue to read those in need."

Lowe's stores across the country will also be collecting donations at every register. The funds go to providing food, shelter and more to those affected by the hurricane and resulting floods. Lowe's and its customers have donated more than $23 million since the company began partnering with the Red Cross in 1999.

Keepin' It Short: All About Racing at the SuperNationals
by Mike Neff

It is SuperNationals week in Boone, Iowa. The main focus of the show is the dirt modifieds, but there are also Late Models, Stock Cars, SportMods and Hobby Stocks. The event is a Mecca for racing, with races running early into the morning, and the track crew re-prepping the track after every 10 races. Wednesday night was the opening night of activity for the modifieds, while the other divisions had been running earlier in the week.

248 cars took part in just the Modified portion of the activities on Wednesday night across 30 heat races, six B-Mains and an A-Main. The SuperNationals are a racing junkie's dream. Nearly 250 Modifieds are in town for the events along with almost 200 stock cars. 42 Deery Brothers Late Models raced on Monday night along with 180 SportMods and 152 Hobby Stocks.

The folks at Boone Speedway have this race down to a science. One of the tricks to dirt track racing is keeping up with the changing track conditions. That is not a problem at Boone because they rework the track every 10 races. The track is tilled up, watered and repacked every time. They have the process down pat to where the disruption is about as minimal as possible and the end result is a dirt playing field that is about as consistent as it can possibly be.

The interesting fact about the Modified SuperNationals is that the winner, who survives four grueling days of racing and bests a field of the greatest Modified racers in the business, takes home a check for $2,000. In addition to that honor, he also loses his engine, which is raffled off after the feature to the highest bidder.

It may sound like a quirky deal, and it does keep some racers away, but in the end the winner can always claim he won the biggest dirt race in the world. If you're a dirt racing fan, and you know the dirt mentality, then you should make a pilgrimage to Boone before your days come to an end. Monday night's activities were still going strong at 1:30 in the morning, with 30 races still to go. Provided you don't have anywhere to go the next day, because you won't get any sleep, the price of admission is well worth it to attend the IMCA SuperNationals.

Whelen All-American National Points Race

While the weekend was a rainy one east of the Mississippi, the top two contenders in the Whelen All-American National Points were able to race, but neither of them improved their position in the point standings. Lee Pulliam added a top-10 finish to his resume while Nate Monteith notched a top 5. Somehow Keith Rocco dropped two points, which puts him behind Duane Howard now. Howard was the big winner of the week, scoring his ninth win of the season and vaulting from eighth to third in the national race. The members of the top 10 did not change, although there was some position shuffling.

With just two weekends of racing left to determine the National Champion, Pulliam has to just be hoping his two closest competitors are not able to run and win enough races to catch him, unless he is able to make it to the 810 maximum first.

Position Name Races Wins Top5s Top10s Total Points

1.    Lee Pulliam 33 20 27 29 783
2.    Nate Monteith 29 10 21 24 726
3.    Duane Howard 19 9 16 19 713
4.    Keith Rocco 37 12 22 27 712
5.    Ted Christopher 46 7 38 41 712
6.    Ryan Preece 44 13 29 36 709
7.    C.E. Falk III 28 14 20 25 705
8.    Deac McCaskill 26 18 24 26 703
9.    Tim Brown 24 8 13 18 672
10.    Jason O'Brien 28 5 18 24 661

A driver's best 18 results through Sept. 16 are counted toward their states and national point totals, and the champions are decided on overall point total. Once a driver reaches 18 starts, their total would increase incrementally as they replace some poorer runs with better results.

Under the points structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, the race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 20 cars. Second place receives two fewer points and so on through the field. Race winners receive an additional five points. For example, if 20 cars are in the field, the winner receives 45 points, second place 38 and third 36. If there are 15 cars, the winner receives 35 points, second 28 and third, 26.

ASA National Points Battle

One of the most difficult aspects of winning the ASA National Title is that a driver has to win a track championship to be eligible. In the NASCAR Whelen All-American battle, it is all about the points and it doesn't matter if a driver wins a track title or not. The ASA requires drivers to take a local track title in order to be eligible for the national title. For Shelby Stroebel and Lance Gatlin, that hurdle was cleared this past week.

Stroebel's amazing season finished off with two more wins this past weekend, giving him 14 consecutive victories for the year and 16 in-a-row dating back to 2011. His track championship, undefeated season and 5.0763 average has him sitting atop the national point standings. Gatlin also capped off a track title this past weekend, although his season-long quest to go undefeated ended a few weeks ago. Gatlin has a week left in his racing season but his closest competitor is too far behind to wrest the track title away from him in the last event of the season.

Most of the other competitors at ASA tracks in the east were rained out this weekend, although Ace Speedway did get their feature in. Dustin Rumley leads the track championship at Ace and that puts him third in the national title battle. Mike Slone was unable to add to his average this past weekend due to the remnants of Hurricane Isaac, which washed out most of the east coast's activities.

ASA Member Track National Championship Standings

Position Name Average

1.    Shelby Stroebel 5.0763
2.    Lance Gatlin 4.6725
3.    Dustin Rumley 4.2593
4.    Mike Slone 4.7059
5.    Dennis Queen 3.9873
6.    Michael Hale 3.8030
7.    Mark Eswein 3.4388
8.    Kyle Borden 1.3704

Throughout the season, drivers competing in the premiere divisions at eligible ASA Member Tracks are in the running for the 2012 ASA Member Track National Championship. In order to have a chance for the national title, a driver must first win their 2012 track championship.

Speednetdirect.com, for the fifth year in a row, will tabulate the National Championship standings.  Using a proprietary formula that creates an average based on wins, finishing positions, number of cars passed, car counts and events.  The driver who wins their track championship and has the highest average over the other ASA Member Track champions will win the 2012 ASA Member Track National Championship. Full standings are available at www.speednetdirect.com. Click on the ASA Member Track logo at the top of the page.

Fantasy Friday: Federated Auto Parts 400
by Jeff Wolfe

There are a lot of scenarios that could play out in the final race of the NASCAR Sprint Cup's regular season Saturday night at Richmond.

Some of the things to watch include whether Tony Stewart will remain in the top 10 or be forced to join the Chase as a wild card, whether Kasey Kahne will remain the first wild-card qualifier by being the only driver 11th-20th in the standings with two win; will either Kyle Busch, Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Marcos Ambrose, Joey Logano manage to snag a second win for the wild card, and could Carl Edwards or Paul Menard put themselves in the Chase with a win.

Of course we can't forget about the guys already in the top 10. Since they have clinched a spot in the Chase, they can gamble and go for the win, which would give them three bonus points when the Chase starts next Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway. The top 10 in points will be seeded by how many wins they have, while the two wild-card qualifiers will not get bonus points for victories.

There are a lot of different scenarios where the above drivers could make the Chase, and some are more extreme than others.

But the real battle here will be between the No. 18 of Kyle Busch and No. 24 of Jeff Gordon. Busch currently sits in the 12th and final qualifying spot with a 12-point lead on Gordon. They each have a win,  so if either wins, they are in the Chase. However, if neither is close to victory, then Gordon will need to have a 13-point advantage over Busch to make the Chase. Along with finishing that many spots ahead of Busch, Gordon can also get a point each for leading a lap and leading the most laps.

But leading at Richmond is something that Busch is accustomed to. He's won three of the last five races there and those wins weren't simply good luck. In those five races, Busch has led 493 laps, the most of any driver. He's finished in the top 5 four times in those fives races and the other finish was sixth. That all adds up to an average finish of 2.2 in his last five trips to Richmond.

It would be hard for anybody to compare to those numbers favorably. They just can't be topped. But Gordon has at least been respectable at Richmond the last five times out. He has two top-5 finishes and has led 155 laps. So it's not inconceivable that Gordon could win on Saturday night. He's visited Victory Lane 86 times in Sprint Cup career. so he knows how to win. And being 13 points better than Busch at Richmond seems like a stretch. So for Gordon, too, just like the rest of the one-win drivers sitting 11th-20th in points, it's pretty much win or miss the Chase.

The regular season ends with the Saturday night race at Richmond. It's get in the top 12 or miss the Chase for those who will still have a chance, so there could be some desperation strategy late in the race. But there are a handful of drivers who have a strong record at Richmond, so that's what the picks are based on this week, not theoretical possibilities that may or may not play out at the end of the race.

Top 5 Picks

1)  Kyle Busch - He has four wins at Richmond and an average finish of 4.7 in 15 races. And he needs at least a good finish, and possibly a win, to make the Chase.

2) Denny Hamlin - He's got two wins and seven top fives in 13 races at Richmond and he's on a roll at the right time.

3) Dale Earnhardt, Jr. - If he's going to be a title contender in the Chase, three bonus points for a win would sure help him. He's got three victories at Richmond.

4) Jimmie Johnson - Even though he took himself out with an accident last week, the No. 48 will be one of the favorites at each track for the rest of the season.

5) Tony Stewart - He's desperate for a good finish and this is the place where he could get it. He's got three wins at Richmond, too, and an average finish of 10.6 in 27 races there.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda - Jeff Gordon. I had him as a possibility to win here. With Busch's record at Richmond, Gordon and his team pretty much knows they will need a victory to make the Chase. He's had some success there in the past with two wins and 15 top-5 finishes, but a top 5 might not be enough to make up the 12-point gap between him and Busch.

ACCOUNTABILITY GROUP
Here's a look at how last week's picks fared at Atlanta.

Kasey Kahne - 23rd. Loved this pick going into the race, but he was never factor.

Tony Stewart  - 22nd. He started on the pole, so this looked like a strong pick, but he faded quickly after the early laps and never really got the handling figured out.

Carl Edwards  - 36th. He was in the top 10 for much of the race, until a grenade engine ended his night.

Jimmie Johnson - 34th. He wasn't having a great night, but hopes were dashed when it ended in an accident.

Kyle Busch - 6th. He was the only respectable pick I had. He did lead 66 laps and did contend, but couldn't get to the front on the final restart.

Season Stats
125 Predictions
14  Wins
41 Top 5s
57 Top 10s

Grade for the week: D. Only Busch saved this week from being a complete disaster.

One last thing: Hamlin has a chance to win three straight races as he and Busch are the two favorites. The last driver to win three straight was Jimmie Johnson in 2007, when he won four straight with victories at Martinsville, Atlanta, Texas and Phoenix..

Say What?!?

"We didn't really have a good run the first time out at Richmond. We ended up coming up with some things throughout the race. We have been really good at making progress at the track, which has improved our program all around. I really like Richmond and its layout. It always has interesting races and is cool to race there at night. We are thrilled to have TMone on board celebrating their sixth listing on the Inc. 5000." -David Reutimann

"I really like Richmond, and it's a track where our team has performed well. The night race and race to the Chase always makes it an exciting race. I can't wait to watch Ryan in the Nationwide race Friday in the No. 22 and to see what we can do on Saturday night in the No. 36 Chevrolet." -Dave Blaney

"[Richmond] is my favorite track. It's not one of them, it's the favorite track of mine on the circuit. It's the perfect-sized track for a Cup race. The other short tracks we run – Bristol and Martinsville – they're cool in their own right, but there's a lot of congestion at those two tracks. But at Richmond, it just seems like that extra quarter-mile, and that three-quarter-mile shape, and how wide the groove gets there, allows for good racing. It seems like we have to race ourselves and race the racetrack versus racing each other a lot of times. You do have to race each other, obviously, but there are a lot of times during the race when you have the flexibility to move around on the racetrack and try to find a spot your car likes better than somewhere else. A lot of times on a short track you don't have the flexibility. You're more narrowed down with what groove you're going to be in." -Tony Stewart

FRONTSTRETCH TRIVIA:

Q:
Later on in the 1998 Autolite Platnium 250, there was yet another big wreck. What happened here?

Check back Monday for the answer, here in the Frontstretch Newsletter!

Thursday's Answer:

Q: In 1998, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. picked up his first career Richmond victory in the Busch Series Autolite Platnium 250. However, this race had a big wreck early on. What happened?

A: It took less than a minute for heck to break loose that night. On the second lap, Tracy Leslie, Brad Noffsinger and Matt Kenseth had contact with each other in Turn 1. Noffsinger spun and was hit by Mike Dillon and Tim Fedewa, effectively blocking the racing groove. Joe Bessey, Tony Stewart, Mike McLaughlin, Robert Pressley, Ken Schrader and Elliott Sadler were all involved. The crash can be seen at the 10:40 mark of this clip. Only Schrader, who wasn't racing for points, was eliminated in this crash. Everyone else continued after repairs.
